A Town Called Christmas (Harlequin Super Romance) Review

Navy Pilot Mike Kavanaugh plans to spend his Christmas leave in front of the television watching football - alone. Still smarting from a "Dear John" letter he received from his fiancé, he's not exactly bursting with the holiday spirit. Fellow pilot Nick York is heading home to Michigan to spend Christmas with his wife and extended family and convinces Mike to accompany him. One look at Nick's sister, Merry, is all it takes to pique Mike's interest and it looks like Mike's holiday won't be a total bust. Except for one little thing...the lovely Merry York is 5 months pregnant.
There were a thousand ways this story could have gone wrong, but instead it manages to get just about everything right. The setting is perfect - a tiny town called Christmas in upper Michigan. Rather than going the "cutesy" route, the author portrays the town realistically. Christmas is a little worn, the residents are predominantly blue-collar and feeling the pinch of the lousy economy. Still, the town does it's best to live up to it's name during the holiday season and I really enjoyed this snapshot of small-town America.
All the characters are developed quite nicely, but Mike and Merry are particularly well done. Both are in their mid-thirties and despite their mutual attraction are not in a position to start a relationship. Mike's next deployment is imminent, and Merry has decided to go it alone in the parenting department - the biological father is totally out of the picture. Mike's conscience won't let him have a brief fling with a vulnerable woman, but neither does he see himself as father material - at least not yet. Merry knows that the timing isn't right, but a tiny part of her holds on to the hope that Mike can love her and the baby she's carrying. There were moments when I couldn't see how the author was going to bring these two together, but without giving anything away I will say that I was completely satisfied by the end of the story.
Bottom Line: The author takes an implausible scenario and makes it seem perfectly natural. A well written holiday romance that avoids being over-the-top cute but still provides that feel-good fix...ahh, Christmas.
Little (if any) strong language and one love scene that falls in the PG range.
