Choices Review

Choices by Katrina L. Burchett is classified as "Young Adult Fiction", I think it should be known as a wondrous work of Young Adult Christian Fiction. I was so moved by the intricately weaved tale that at times I had to sit back and reminisce about my own teenage years. Set in York, Pennsylvania, Choices is about five teenage girls who struggle with sexuality, pregnancy, faith, and living a sheltered life. Issues of puberty, child abuse, neglectful parents, growing pains, finding themselves and keeping the word of God alive are also at stake.
Shauntice is growing up in an abusive household where she witnesses her father constantly abuse her mother. She turns to prayer to keep her sanity. Dealing with a lot of trust issues when it comes to the male species Shauntice is not very receptive of Terry, a young man who is interested in learning more about her. Can Shauntice, at such a young age build up her trust for men?
Angel is the promiscuous friend, with a case of low self-esteem. Not knowing who her father is and having a work-a-holic for a mother, Angel pretty much has to fend for herself. Randy is the young man who has Angels' heart, but with his neglectful ways and demeaning manner will he send Angels' spirits soaring or crashing?
Lakeeta is the fall from grace friend who finds herself pregnant and alone. While losing sight of her dreams and not being able to complete high school, Lakeeta finds herself alienated from her friends, and her family is on the verge of abandoning her. Will Lakeeta turn to the church for answers?
Bridgette is practicing abstinence and wants all of her friends to follow suit, but when they do not she starts preaching about God and how saved she is. Can Bridgette let go of the grudge she is holding against her friends for not having a strong enough faith, or will she fall prey to sex before marriage?
Hope just wants to be one of the girls but when her mother's childhood resurfaces she promises to keep a tight rein on her daughter. Will Hope be able to persuade her mother to loosen the reins or will Hope remain being the outcast in school?
Katrina L. Burchett wrote a well told, well-written story that will make you laugh, cry, and best of all, feel. Every emotion you could possibly have will come out while reading this catchy, fast-paced novel. I recommend this book to readers of all genres. I loved it!

Choices Overview

Five teenage girls make decisions about boyfriends and premarital sex: Shauntice lives in a world of domestic abuse. Her dad beats her mother, so this Christian teen is not sure she wants a boyfriend. Angel has a mother who is never around, she doesn't know who her earthly father is and she doesn't care about the heavenly Father. She became promiscuous to fill a void. LaKeeta is a Christian, but instead of doing it God's way and waiting for marriage, she has sex out of wedlock. She is sixteen and pregnant. Bridgette feels strongly about abstaining from sex and she will not compromise her beliefs. But this young Christian still has her flaws. Hope is so shy that she's barely heard when she speaks. She lives a sheltered life because of her mother's strict rules, and the word 'sex' isn't in her vocabulary... until she suffers a loss. CHOICES is young adult fiction for mature readers.
