The Mother-to-Be's Dream Book: Understanding the Dreams of Pregnancy Review

What I first noticed about this book was the intriguing title...intriguing to me as a father of two young ones. My original expectations when I opened it did not live up to the very reality of the book itself. I guess I'm cynical because so many books dealing in the arena of psychology, and especially dream analysis, seem to be either arcane and unreadable for the layman like me, or annoyingly trendy and superficial psychobabble. THIS BOOK HAS NONE OF THOSE SHORTCOMINGS!
What Ms. Paris has written here is a thoughtful, sensitive, profoundly insightful book about the confounding and sublime experience presented by a woman's inner consciousness as new life grows, and she prepares to meet the new physical, emotional, and psychological challenges of birth and parenthood.
I wish my wife and I could have read it during both of her pregnancies. We each tackled sometimes funny, sometimes scary dreams we could make no sense of in terms of the impending events. It was a wild ride, often surreal and hilarious, occasionally unsettling. We didn't have a clue.
Had I read this, I think I could have been a more effective support to my partner in some of those times. Paris' intelligent presentation and analysis give meaning and context to the dreams themselves; and her gentle, authoritative suggestions of ways to prepare for and to respond to the dreams could be a blessing for any parent-to-be.
We've loved reading it, even some years after the fact of those births. With humor and insight, she's given us new and worthwhile understanding of our own path to getting here as parents. In clear, well-written, accesible language, it makes the journey to joy even more of a celebration. We're sending it to all our new or about-to-be-parent friends.

Releasing the Mother Goddess Review

Don't be put off by its title, this book is grounded in reality. The authors focus on the more transcendent qualities of pregnancy and motherhood: the power, the wisdom, the transformation. They explore the myths and stories of ancient mothers from several cultures.
I found it a relaxing, welcome alternative to my reading on the physical aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, and just as educational.

Releasing the Mother Goddess Overview

Written for the woman who is journeying through one of life's most remarkable spiritual and physical experiences, this is an uplifting, empowering approach to the process of childbirth and motherhood that reflects on ancient wisdom about this enduring miracle, from the goddess of fertility to the Mother Goddess herself. Unlike other childbirth and parenting books that are clinical or practical in nature, Releasing the Mother Goddess is a unique volume that focuses on the mystical process of creating new life. It offers holistic exercises and explorations that cover both emotional and physical concerns. It celebrates the feminine life cycle, from maiden to mother to crone. And it shows how that cycle resonates from ancient times and goddesses to modern moms in the 21st century.

PERFECTLY PREGNANT Review

This book is my FAVORITE book when I am pregnant, and I have had 6 kids. This book is an excellent book on nutrition, I learned soooo much the first time I read it about how to combine carbs with protein, and what are the 10 best foods to eat and the 10 worst foods to eat. The cartoons and illustrations are hilarious, and you need a sense of humor when your pregnant! I have bought copies of this book for friends when they first find out they are pregnant to spread the word. It helps with swelling, nausea, preclampsia, constipation, you name it. I even consult it when I am not pregnant to get the recipes out of the back and to re-motivate myself to eat those 10 best foods, and not so much of the 10 worst... :)

Prince of Montez, Pregnant Mistress (Harlequin Larger Print Presents) Review

From the very first moment he saw her he wanted her and was determined to have her for as long as he wanted! This thrilling and powerful love story by Sabrina Philips leaves the reader breathless as it begins so intensely leaving nothing to the imagination because it's very obvious that Leon desires Cally like no other woman in his life. He makes his desire for her immediately clear.
Cally Greenway needs the chance to work on the restoration of two priceless paintings which would also give her resume a boost for future work. She's been promised the restoration job if a London gallery wins them in the auction. She's on pins and needles the night of the auction and notices the most gorgeous man she's ever seen. Unfortunately, the gallery does not win the auction and she's left with not knowing what to do other than to return to her hotel. However, the handsome stranger invites her out for a drink, she accepts and they kiss; the passion is overwhelming and to her astonishment and dismay he sends her away in a taxi back to her hotel.
Now weeks later, Cally is summoned to Montez to interview with the buyer of the paintings, the Prince of Montez and of course it's Leon Montez the very same man who sent her away. How can she accept this job from the very same man who humiliated her? She has no choice, so accepts because of the reputation she will gain for future restoration work.
Leon decides he'll be patient and she'll come to him on his terms! He watches her restoration during the first days which totally distracts her. He keeps taunting her and is constantly reminding Cally about how much they want each other. When she can't stand it anymore and gives in to the desire, the passion explodes between them and they realize during their lovemaking she wasn't protected.
As the story unfolds the reader learns about each character. Cally's given up quite a lot in her life, her painting and another wealthy man she thought she loved who in the end used her. A man she thought she could trust only to be betrayed. As for Leon, he was used by women wanting him for his wealth and what he could give them, not for him. He definitely had trust issues.
Cally's entire stay on Montez is emotional and overwhelming. Even though Leon desires her like no other woman, he can't seem to trust her motives for coming, her motives for the restoration and feels it's the fame and the press she wants. Even 1when his reason for the mistrust is revealed, it doesn't help one to understand his abruptness and obsession towards Cally.
Their affair explodes off of the pages and you begin to wonder will it continue or how will it end? That's not all that explodes especially when Leon's ex-sister-in-law shows up with accusations, her love blows up in her face. It's too much in the end, she leaves heartbroken for Paris and then finds out she's carrying Leon's baby. Surprisingly enough she's happy and seems to adapt. It reminded me of the fairy tale about a girl that jumps into a rabbit hole and how does she come out of it unchanged? Well the answer is, she doesn't.
As only Sabrina Philips can pen, The Prince of Montez, Pregnant Mistress is an intense and passionate romance with many lessons for this couple to learn such as acceptance, forgiveness, trust and love. It's simply a brilliant contemporary romance which in the end has a happy ever after.
Behind the Book:
"In terms of the story, I started knowing that I wanted to write a book in which the hero and heroine were new to one another from page one. My previous two stories were about couples with a shared past reuniting, and I wanted to try something different. When I was sunbathing on my honeymoon in Zanzibar I started contemplating how a girl might find herself going to live and work in the home of a wealthy alpha hero, and out of nowhere the heroine-as-art restorer idea was born. The auction opening scene - a delight to write, sprang to mind next, and then the story just took off!" Sabrina

Pregnant Proposal (Having The Boss'S Baby) (Silhouette Romance) Review

Jennifer Martin is 8 months pregnant - not exactly the right time frame but who knows - with a sperm bank.
Kane Haley wasn't sure.
Matt Holder worked for Kane and was always willing to lend a helping hand to Jen.
Now Jen was being harrassed by her almost in-laws after they found out she was pregnant.
Dutch Sedgewick of Sedgewick-Armour law firm and his wife were determined to gain custody of their spoiled, dead son's baby
He is threatening Jen with a custody suit. She, in a moment of panic claims Matt Holder as the father of her child.
Therein starts a great mix-up that leads Matt to looking after Jen. But, boy, when his parents find out he is to become a father, they lay an elaborate, humorous plan to convince Matt to marry Jen. Which leads to their own remarriage.
Matt can not stand the thoughts of marriage after living through his parents' bickering, shouting matches and divorce.
It is a lively, lovely story - one you may want to read again later.,
This is a 4 plus star -- and refreshing.

Navel-Gazing: The Days and Nights of a Mother in the Making Review

"Having a work life takes confidence." I think this quote that Jen wrote about her mom, sums up her adventure into motherhood. Having a life with a baby takes lots of confidence, and Navel Gazing truly depicts how one woman grows into honoring herself throughout the pregnancy process. It shares the raw ups and downs of being pregnant. I am very excited that she had the courage and perservance to tell us her story.

Multifetal Pregnancy: A Handbook for Care of the Pregnant Patient (LWW Handbook Series) Review

This is a very informative book, that provides you with the information you need (as a patient) to make some important decisions. Though portions are a bit scarey, I'm happy I read it.

Multifetal Pregnancy: A Handbook for Care of the Pregnant Patient (LWW Handbook Series) Overview

This concise and easy-to-use handbook provides up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines for the optimal antepartum and intrapartum management of twin, triplet, and higher-order multifetal gestations. Coverage includes a detailed discussion of prenatal genetic diagnosis in multiple gestations and a review of the risks and benefits of multifetal pregnancy reduction and selective termination. Other topics addressed include maternal nutrition, prediction and prevention of preterm birth, obstetric complications unique to multiple gestations, intrapartum management of multiples, and management of triplet and higher-order multiple birth. Detailed and extensively researched tables summarize the outcomes of twin, triplet, quadruplet, and reduced pregnancies.

Pregnant And Practically Married (The Bridal Circle) (Silhouette Special Edition) Review

I enjoyed both "If Only I Had a...Husband" and "Secret Agent Groom," so I was a little worried that "Pregnant & Practically Married" might be somewhat of a let-down. No problem. Andrea Edwards'(a husband and wife writing team)patented sense of humor is still at work, but at times they went further and brought a tear to my eye.
Jed McCarron is a widower with a daughter who is famous for her Crunchy Flakes commercials. Lissa wants a mommy. She tells Jed that he needs a friend of his own because "I'm growing up. I'm going to be leaving for college soon. And after that, I'll be going to South America to save the rain forests." Jed manages not to panic. He replies, "You're eight. I've got time."
Minutes later Jed finds himself sweeping Karin Spencer into his arms and carrying her away...to the hospital. A wind storm has struck the restaurant where both the McCarrons and Karin are having lunch, and Jed pulled her out of harm's way in the nick of time. The restaurant staff, the ambulance that comes to take Karin to the hospital, and the hospital staff all assume that Karin is his wife...his slightly pregnant wife.
In time honored fashion, this initial mistake grows and grows, spreading like a weed, until inevitably both Karin and Jed start thinking that maybe being husband and wife for real isn't such a bad idea. Of course, Lissa has thought this all along and has been promoting it actively, aided and abetted by Karin's mother.
Karin, a cardiac surgeon who thinks she can't love, and Jed make a charming pair of lovers. The secondary characters are both fun and believable. Put all the elements together and you have a delightful little book. I know I will return to it when I need a lift and perhaps a chance for a sentimental sniffle.

Pregnant And Practically Married (The Bridal Circle) (Silhouette Special Edition) Overview

KNIGHT…IN WHITE STETSON?One minute, pregnant and single Karin Spencer was daydreaming about being swept away by a white knight, and one wallop-to-the-head later she was. But her rescuer was no knight-he was a cowboy! Surely rock-solid rodeo champ Jed McCarron wouldn't mind doing her one more itty-bitty favor….Play her fiancé?! Pretend to be her child's father? Jed could feel his "cowboy code" kick in from the moment he'd cradled sweet Karin against his chest. He couldn't help but aid this damsel again. After all, it wasn't like playing her beloved would have him lassoing her ring finger with a golden rope…or would it?THE BRIDAL CIRCLE:They dreamed of marrying and leaving their small town behind-but soon discovered there's no place like home for true love!--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Unfit Subjects: Education Policy and the Teen Mother, 1972-2002 Review

Wanda S. Pillow uses qualitative and quantitative data to examine America's ongoing teen pregnancy problem. The only western nation without comprehensive sex education, America also boasts a dubious distinction of having the western world's highest teen pregnancy rate.
Teen pregnancy became noticed as an individual demographic-specific problem in the 1960's, but different races were and have always been treated differently in America when they find themselves pregnant.
White women were historically regarded as having made a 'bad choice', but ultimately were redeemable (through the intervention of moralistic social service personnel) only if they sequestered themselves in maternity homes. Here they could become 'repaired' through a strict regimen of religion and vocational training, while they were supposed to ultimately find a man---their having a child allegedly limited marriage ability. Later on, some homes would even offer adoption services, allowing the woman to further `erase' the teenage pregnancy and have a second chance at respectability.
Contrasting, black teenage pregnancies became cited as `evidence' of that community's problems and consequently were left to their own devices. Black teenagers traditionally were supposed to turn to their own for assistance.
Although teens are no longer kicked out of school for becoming pregnant (Title IX), they are instead being handed many punitive options by our government. The same entities who do not give them access to information about preventing a pregnancy then appear to constantly remind them that their options are limited once they are pregnant. This compounds the sense of isolation which those young women have.
What daycare and social service programs exist for teens is not enough to meet the demand. The American government historically and currently does not want to make the social policy investitures required for having actual social change. Connaught `Connie' Marshner was a Reagan administration political appointment to head the office of family life, but she actually knew very little about the program which she was supposed to direct. Marshner was soon replaced by somebody with more related experience, but that 1980's incident is emblematic of how little priority the government gave to seriously addressing and then ending teen pregnancy. If bureaucracies ultimately function through expertise only, the first appointment never was actually going to address teen pregnancy. Rather it was going to reinforce ideological stereotypes about `promiscuous youth' and 'values'; 'good people' allegedly did not have teen pregnancies.
The 'promiscuous low-income youth' myth reared its head in the 1990's with welfare reform. Welfare reform itself was built on the assumption that young women of color were becoming rich from having litters of babies, selectively ignoring the actual payment levels pre-reform, which were not enough to live above poverty anywhere inside this country. The sexuality of black women ultimately provided sufficient ammunition for politicians to attack the welfare state, even Democratic president Bill Clinton had endorsed and signed the measure.
She also includes information on Hispanic young women. By virtue of being people of color they are also being victimized through race-sexuality dichotomies and additionally face language barriers while trying to obtain social services. The thrust of the book's racial-ethnic focus is centered on the black-white politics of sex, teen pregnancy, and poverty. Since 19th century miscegenation laws were first enacted, black sexuality has terrified public policymakers as alternately being both inferior and effectively destructive to the country.
Identifying many connotations within the term `epidemic' Pillow concedes that American teen pregnancy rates will not substantially decline until we begin having honest talks. Our country needs to talk how current policies are/have been fundamentally race-gender-socioeconomic constructed and then we can adopt a more inclusive approach to sexuality education.

Unfit Subjects: Education Policy and the Teen Mother, 1972-2002 Overview

Wanda Pillow presents a critical analysis of federal law and polciy towards pregnant teens, representations of teen pregnancy in popular culture and educational policy assesses how schools provide educational opportunities for school aged mothers. Through in- depth analysis of specific policies and programmes, both past and present, thsi book traces America's successes and failures in educating pregnant teens. Unfit Subjects uses feminist, race and poststructural theories to inform a satisfactory educational policy.

Should I Keep My Baby Review

Twelve years ago, this book was invaluable to me as a pregnant 15 year old. Since then my copy has helped many young women. This new edition is even better, and I look forward to sharing it all over again. It is easy to read, and short enough to read in one sitting (though you will refer to it again and again). As a former pregnant teen, and now a counselor and educator to pregnant teens, I highly recommend this book.

The Doctor's Pregnant Proposal (The Thunder Clan) Review

Dr. Grey Thunder is the only doctor on the Smoke Valley Reservation in Vermont and because he's young and good looking he has a problem. It seems that a bevy of young women are all of a sudden developing various aches and pains and while our good doctor is trying to heal their fictional problems, they are trying to entice him into their beds, husband hunters all.
Then he gets, what he thinks, is a genius of an idea. His new nurse Lori Young is on the run from a horrible ex-husband in California. She's pregnant and afraid. Grey figures if they marry in name only, it'll keep the single women off his back, plus it'll keep Lori's ex-husband at bay.
However as things go, he's soon in love with Lori and ready to do battle when horrible hubby comes to town. But Lori is afraid, not of hubby, but of a dark secret in her past. You see now she's in love with Grey and she's afraid hubby will spill the beans and then she'll have no one.
This was a very quick read and it kept me hanging on right to the end to find out what Lori's secret was. I was also on pins and needles, wondering how the confrontation would wind up when Lori's ex finally met up with Grey. A very nice romance.

Ancestry DNA Toolbox Review

I was reading about the DNA tests performed in relations to the September 11 attacks in New York. I was interested to learn more about the techniques that are used in such tests. The toolbox gave me all I needed. The book by Mr. Carmichael is very informative and detailed for a reader like me. The kit provided me with the possibility to send samples and have my DNA banked. Great source! Highly recommend it!

Nine Months in August Review

In Massachusetts caterer and events planner Gretchen Fox always uses lists to plan her day. However, she is stunned when an unforeseen circumstance nukes the best laid long term plans of mice and married women when she learns she is pregnant.
Her husband Fredrik is euphoric with the news, which just adds guilt to Gretchen's despondency. Her best friends since their Smith College days together, Meredith and Louisa, are ecstatic as the three musketeers are pregnant at the same time; their joy makes Gretchen feel more miserable. Besides coping with morning sickness 24/7, and her mother, Gretchen fears she will lose her position as the family friendly era ended when compassionate conservatism became in. As months towards her August due date pass, Gretchen begins to feel an iota of happiness that with each day grows until she begins to find bliss with the coming of their baby.
This fascinating character study showcases how comparatively marriage makes some important changes in a person's lifestyle, but the altering seems insignificant when compared with how a baby nukes a way of life. Gretchen is the star as she goes through the nine months that feels like eternity in purgatory. Adriana Bourgoin provides a great tale of a pregnant woman whose emotions run the gamut from euphoria to self loathing and deprecation.

Nine Months in August Overview

Gretchen Fox is a planner and list-maker by nature, perfectly suited to her job as a hotel catering manager. And in her cautious, look-before-you-leap way, Gretchen was waiting until the time was absolutely perfect before she had a baby. Her body, however, had other ideas. Now Gretchen is discovering what a big difference a little blue line can make - to her marriage, her career, and her state of mind. As Gretchen spends sleepless nights pondering all the reasons she's not ready to become a mother, she starts to question every other area of her life too. Even her relationship with Meredith and Louisa, her closest friends since their days together at Smith College, undergoes a sudden, dramatic shift. As she's inducted into a new world of anti-motion sickness wristbands, emergency supplies of ginger ale, and hormone-fuelled crying jags, Gretchen realizes that all the planning in the world couldn't have prepared her for the wonderful, extraordinary journey that lies ahead...

Sunlight and Shadow Review

I have read this book twice already, and it is positively amazing! The way Sue and Mare blend such vivid imagery with such life-like characters...one of the best books I've read in a LONG time. I must say, Santiago is my favorite character. He makes Rachel such a credible character. I'm happily awaiting the sequel!
