Innocent Secretary... Accidentally Pregnant (Modern Romance) Review

Luca is a playboy. Emma knows just the type being she was raised by her single father and four older brothers who all view women as something of a game. Hunt, claim, toss the remains in the trash. So when she starts something with her boss she knows that before it starts it's going to end and before it ends she's going to get heartbroken.
Luca is the type of character I usually hate, a real womanizing bastard who wears fake charm like most people put on shirts and yet, like Emma, I found myself falling a little bit in love with him too. His father was abusive to his mother, and there was a history of serious spousal abuse going back much further in his family. He absolutely refused to get serious with a woman and once he started to care even the slightest bit he would cut and run, afraid he would one day become violent, while sleeping around in a sad attempt to ease some of his inner pain. I have never seen a more nasty and yet utterly sympathetic "hero" in a romance novel before and I would be hard pressed to think of a more memorable lead, even though his patterns are the generic male harlequin statue quo.
This isn't an easy book to read. Luca is mean, nasty, and down right cruel to Emma most of the time. He tells her that she's boring, he doesn't like her, that she's bad in bed and takes back his statement of love with the excuse he was just trying to get her into bed. I feel about him like Emma does, that he is a good person who does terrible things. I was slightly unsatisfied with the ending being I thought given Luca's CONSTANT rejection she forgave him way, way, way too easily. He gave her an explanation of his past, but that doesn't justify the way he treated her and I really would have loved to see Luca court her and have a few scenes with him showing his love, not buried under a mound of growls.
But this really is a wonderful, if very emotional and heartbreaking tale of one extraordinarily damaged man and one slightly damaged woman trying to come to terms with their feelings for each other. Don't let the stupid title and even worse cover fool you, this book is light years better than the standard harlequin fare.
5 stars.
