A Child Is Born Review

Lennart Nilsson's amazing photography of life in the womb is gathered together into this book to help anyone understand the miracle of life. Unlike other books about pregnancy, this book deals with the child's development rather than the mother's, and as such can be appreciated by all.
If you are pregnant, know someone who is, or just want to know about babies in the womb, I highly recommend at least leafing thru the book in your local bookstore... you'll most likely buy it as soon as you see it, so be prepared! This is also an excellent gift for anyone who is pregnant!
We used this book to educate all our friends about pregnancy and later to show my 18 month old son what those twin babies in mommy's belly were looking like. My parents used an earlier version of this book to help my sister and I prepare for the birth of our baby brother.
Full color photographs of inutero babies fill the pages, going from preconception chapters on reproduction, through each week of life, all the way to the birth of the baby. Week by week, you can look at what a babies' development should be, learn when the ears and arms develop (as well as many other parts), etc.
The photography is amazing, crisper and clearer that the naked eye looking at a baby out of the womb. The beauty is something akin to the brilliant images that the Hubble Space Telescope has shot back to Earth. The discoveries that you will make seem endless (Did you know that at 4 1/2 weeks we all look like some prehistoric tentacle bearing sea creature?).
There is also a video out called "The Miracle of Life" that has Lennart Nilsson's videos of inutero babies that is an incredible learning tool as well. Most good libraries should have it.
Oh, the only real downfalls are that the photos of people outside the womb have that cheesy 70s/80s look to them, no twins inutero, and you will probably wear out the binding on your book because it is so spectacular.

Life-Giving Love : Embracing God's Beautiful Design for Marriage Review

I've been waiting years for someone to write this book -- a book that gently but irresistably makes the case for the Catholic Church's teaching on marriage and family life. Kimberly Hahn has made it worth the wait. I could call this book an encyclopedia of Catholic family life -- it's that complete! -- but that would give the wrong impression. This book makes its points, makes them clearly, and makes them with real-life stories that are far more vivid than any strings of quotations from Vatican documents could ever be. LGL's recurring message is this: living a faithful life may be difficult at times, but it makes for a happier marriage. This is my own experience. I've seen it borne out again and again in my friends' marriages. Mrs. Hahn captures this joy that's hard-won, but lasting: "it's not simply a command to be obeyed, but it's a truth to be lived." People like to gripe about Christ's teaching, especially in the area of sex, but it's the only teaching that's true, and so it's the only one that works. The alternatives are dreadful -- witness the epidemics of divorce, STDs, and broken hearts.
I don't want to give the impression that this is yet another tome about sex. It's much more than that. It's a way of life. One remarkable appendix offers detailed lists of things we can do to help mothers, from early pregnancy through birth. Other lists suggest helps for "When Dad Travels," "After a Miscarriage," and "After Adoption." This is a powerful, practical guide to Christian friendship.
Another useful and unique feature is Mrs. Hahn's chapter on infertility. As someone who suffered four years waiting for my first pregnancy, I can't thank the author enough for what she's done here. She gives a good list of things NOT to say to an infertile couple ("You must have all the time in the world to do the things you want!" "What's it like to shop alone?"). Her list is long, but I think I heard every line at least once. Still, she doesn't just issue "don'ts." She also sketches out conversation starters that can be genuinely comforting. So none of us ever need be at a loss for words. She does the same for miscarriage (another matter I know from experience).
One last thought: Mrs. Hahn is, without a doubt, a true-blue Catholic; but, as a convert, she knows how to speak gently, persuasively to those who are unconvinced. In my volunteer work, I meet all sorts of women, who believe all sorts of things; but I can't think of too many who would be insulted by what's in this book. You can buy a copy for each and every skeptic in your life.
For all the awkwardness she spares us -- and all the comfort she enables us to give to suffering friends -- Mrs. Hahn's book is worth at least three times its sticker price.
I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Life-Giving Love : Embracing God's Beautiful Design for Marriage Overview

God has a beautiful design for your marriage. Have you discovered it? Blueprints for building a family seem to abound today. But the countless plans proposed donÂ't all agree, and married couples are often left confused. Where can we turn for a true vision of what it takes to build happy, healthy, holy families? Kimberley Hahn takes us back to the One who designed marriage in the first place. GodÂ's wonderful plan for the family is clearly revealed in the time-tested teachings of the Catholic Church. Hahn offers a fresh but deeply rooted perspective on the true meaning of marital love and its implications for a number of significant issues: natural family planning, contraception, infertility, abortion, sterilization, and miscarriage. She draws from Scripture and Church teachings as well as poignant personal experiences from dozens of families who share their stories. Their testimony will help you rediscover the path of prayer, sacrifice, and self-discipline that God intends for married couples--the path of life-giving love.

The Dudes' Guide to Pregnancy: Dealing with Your Expecting Wife, Coming Baby, and the End of Life as You Knew It Review

I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy this book. I found the book very entertaining. I agree with other reviews that men need to be careful in letting their wives read it too. It's very irreverent towards pregnancy. I am unable to give it a full 5 stars because I was hoping for a book that was more educational. This is not the book to read if your looking for sincere knowledge. This is 100% for entertainment.
