Broken Rhapsody Review

Enter the world of Deborah Ames, recent college graduate and aspiring concert pianist.
Throughout the novel we become awere of her dreams and the obstacles that stand in her way:
a demanding and unbending father; a mother completely incapable of showing any affection; a
rigid society that frowns upon women who wish to follow their own path.
Esther Corderman's keen eye for detail translates into a smooth narrative that constantly
makes the reader aware of the underlying prejudices that make up the fabric of Deborah Ames'
environment and the ever-growing struggle she must face to keep her dream alive.
We also learn in the course of the novel how much we have gained as a society, as well as
all the things we have lost in order to achieve them. This is one not to be missed.

Broken Rhapsody Overview

Deborah Ames is two-faced. While obeying her parents by becoming an organist for a Pittsburgh church, she plans her piano debut at Carnegie Hall and dreams of marriage to her college love. Meanwhile, she attracts the attention of Mrs. Saul Cohen, a member of the board of the Pittsburgh Symphony, and Mrs. Cohen's son, Maury, who is the concertmaster. After Deborah is accepted at Peabody Conservatory of Music, Maury settles her into an apartment in Baltimore. Of course he returns.... Meanwhile, Deborah finds great pleasure in the company of Jeremy Markham...And then-morning nausea. Is she pregnant?
