Secret Surrogate (Harlequin Intrigue) Review

Texas sheriff Lucas Creed had lost his wife and unborn child to a stray bullet meant for his deputy, Kylie Monroe.
Now she is in trouble and needs his help - mostly because she is his secret surrogate. Kylie hopes to give Lucas what he most desires - a child. She had made a promise to her best friend, Lucas's wife, to help him find happiness.
Now someone has found her and she finds herself surrounded by danger.
Lucas didn't want anything to do with Kylie, as he held her responsible for his wife's death. Yet he was a good sheriff and listened to her after her 911 call. Someone was stalking her. Then he finds out that she is pregnant. Wow!
Now they had to track down the villians that were threatening her and Lucas wants an answer on how she became his surrogate.
A most intrigueing story - and you just can't wait for the next chapter.
Highly recommended - great story. I would say it is a keeper!

Secret Surrogate (Harlequin Intrigue) Overview

The last thing this Texas sheriff wanted was to heed a frantic late-night call from the woman who'd destroyed his life. Old wounds were ripped wide-open after Lucas Creed discovered that his former deputy had moved on-and was pregnant to boot. But after rescuing Kylie Monroe from hired guns and taking her under his protection, she repaid him by dropping a bombshell on his world-weary shoulders....

Kylie knew that her misstep in the line of duty had cost Lucas everything. Now, as his secret surrogate, she planned to give the gruff lawman the ultimate gift to heal his heart-although it would break her own. When they teamed up to expose the corrupt man behind the threats, would their glacial rift melt beneath an inferno of desire?

See Jane Die (Mira S.) Review

This is the second book I have read by this author. This one is much better than the other (earlier) work. It is a frightening mystery with many plot twist and turns - with only a few predictable patches. It twists down to a satisfying end leaving the reader satiated.
I would recommend to anyone!

Sweet Spot (Bakery Sisters) Review

Nicole is bummed that she's in the middle of a divorce, not speaking to her youngest sister, and everyone around her (including a stray dog) seems to be pregnant. One morning a teen comes into her bakery and attempts to steal donuts. She calls the cops but instead sexy football coach Eric "Hawk" Hawkins shows up. Brash Nicole wants nothing to do with the smooth charmer, but agrees to let Raoul work off the donuts at her store. Raoul soon proves to be an invaluable asset and she gives him a full time job, and soon he moves in with her when she discovers his foster family has kicked him out. Meanwhile everyone seems to be taking pity on her single status, so she opts to make a bargain with Hawk to pretend to be her lover in exchange for, well the fringe benefits of being a lover. Widowed Hawk never even considers that he might actually fall for the often prickly baker. And then there is his impetuous princess of a daughter...
Mallery's second installment in the Bakery sisters trilogy is a bit disappointing. Nicole is absolutely obnoxious throughout 95% of the first novel, and pretty much half of this one, so I had a hard time actually liking or caring what happened to her character. I did like that Raoul brought out the softer side of her, but disliked the way that she treated just about everyone else around her. And what about her supposed BFF, Wyatt - he was completely MIA in this novel.
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT: I really hate the trite plot device that some authors resort to in order to get a couple together - the dreaded unexpected pregnancy. Really, can't they find a better way to bring a couple together? Use a little creativity. This novel could have been so much better had Mallery not resorted to impregnating all three of the Keyes sisters in order to get their respective men (well, don't know for sure about baby sis Jesse since she is in the next book, but my money's on it). She has realistic dialog, pretty good secondary characters, and a heroine who (finally) grows. It could have been a pretty good story; instead, it's just pretty average.

Sweet Spot (Bakery Sisters) Overview

"Responsibility" should be Nicole Keyes's middle name. After all, not many people would sacrifice their lives to run the family bakery and raise a younger sibling. But with Nicole's twin sister now blissfully married and her younger sis turning out more femme fatale than girl-next-door, super reliable Nicole is getting sick of putting everyone else's needs first! Enter Hawk. The deliciously sexy former NFL player offers Nicole a taste of the freedom she craves. Hawk may know the way, blindfolded, to her sweet spot, but Nicole's not about to let him get close enough to break her heart. Of course, she might not have a choice in the matter if Hawk's past keeps getting in the way of their present.…

Bluebird Winter (Sarah) Review

A wonderful story that will warm your heart. A young mother finds herself in labor during a terrible blizzard and is rescued by an intelligent, handsome, and charismatic doctor who happens to specialize in babies in trouble. He rescues the mother, delivers her premature baby under stormy conditions and marries the deserted and destitute mother to provide the baby with all the advantages a doctor can give it. But his heart is captured by the young mother and he waits for her to find her way to him. A charming and heartwarming story of family love and support, and of a man's dedication and honor.

Don't Let Go (Navy SEALs, Book 5) Review

Marliss Melton has to be one of my favorite new authors. She has only written six books but the last four about Seal Team 12 are great. She seems to have picked up where Suzanne Brockmann left us. I really like the stories about Seals, not only are they good guys but they are really putting their lives on the line for our Country. Her Seals are real men, men who can face the toughest of battle and the tenderest of emotions.
Soloman McGuire is a senior chief, he has faced the loss of his family and child when his wife ran off while he was on assignment. She wanted more than the life he could give her and she took his son with her. She has been gone five yrs and he has no idea where she is.
Jordan Bliss is in Venezuela attempting to adopt a young child she has grown to love, when there is a major coup. Jordan has not had an easy life, she has faced a cheating husband and the loss of a baby. She is determined to save one little boy.
Jordan's sister was a physical therapy nurse, she was there to pull Rafael Valentino back from death two yrs ago and now she calls him for help to save her sister. Rafe is with the FBI and shortly Seal Team 12 arrives to get Jordan, Soloman must pull Miguel from her arms and force her on the plane. He finds it hard to do but he is following orders.
Jordan fights and screams her way back home but she is determined to go back and get her child. Soloman can't forget the woman who would give anything even her life for her child.
The story is complex but brings the two people back togather, and Soloman slowly finds himself falling for Jordan, but even if she does fall for Soloman she will find a way to go back for Miguel.
I loved this book and look forward to many more from this wonderful author. Do not miss it, highly recommended.

Unexpected Review

Ray Vereker breaks all her rules in accepting her latest assignment. Leaving behind her hammer and tool belt, Ray picks up her weapon to find Eli Conners' missing brother. While she acquiesces to Eli's demand to take him along, Ray remains determinedly in charge of this rescue mission. For years Ray has been a successful mercenary, yet this assignment somehow feel much different than all the rest, threatening to spiral out of her control as she discovers an unexpected attraction to her employer.
Even as he tries to grow closer to her, Ray remains an enigma for Eli. He knows her abilities, her experience and her success, but he does not have names or dates. She does not look cutthroat enough, powerful enough, or hardened enough to pull of this assignment. Indeed, Eli finds it hard to believe that Ray is a mercenary until he sees her in action. But his desperation to get his brother out of Central America and her insider's knowledge mean that he must risk everything on this unexpected woman, even it means his heart.
Author Lori Foster's ability to pen sultry, titillating romance is not exactly UNEXPTECTED, and fans will be delighted that she once again delivers in spades. Ray's combination of fierce warrior strength and carefully concealed femininity results in a dazzling character. Likewise, Eli's determination to get closer to her despite her reserve resoles in unexpected challenge and pleasure. Indeed, Eli and Ray prove why Foster has become one of the hottest authors in the business. UNEXPECTED comes very highly recommended.

Unexpected Overview

With a name like Ray Vereker, the mercenary Eli Conners had hired to rescue his irresponsible brother should have been a tank of a man with tattoos and a prison record. But the gorgeous creature demonstrating her karate skills on an unfortunate bar troll is all woman and all business.

The Target (FBI Series) Review

I just finished the hardback version of this novel (and because it is the only Catherine Coulter book that I have ever read) I thought I would check out what she has going on Amazon. Admitted, I cannot compare it to her other "better" works, but I must say that I found this book to be very touching. I'm actually very surprised at some of the reviews that I have read of this book.
I won't rewrite a synopsis as this has already been done below but I do have several issues in support of this book to point out to other readers.
There is a tad of the unbelievable in the fact that Ramsey didn't immediately take the child that he found to a hospital; but that is a sign of our too cynical hearts. The reason that it is unbelievable is because most people would be afraid of the consequences of being blamed for molesting her themselves and would therefore have immediately turned her over to the nearest "authorities", felt sorry for her and been done with it. But that is not the nature of the "hero" of this story.
What makes this understandable is the fact that Ramsey is a federal judge who knows very well the system that Emma would be going into once he turned her over. As a federal judge he IS one of the "authority figures" and immediately takes responsibility of a child whose situation has touched his heart. He feels that he is more capable of being sensitive to her situation and caring for her than would male complete strangers in some podunk town in the Rockies. [I don't know about any of you readers - but have you ever had to deal with sheriffs in small rural towns on sensitive sexual issues of rape involving children? Guarantied that most of the people involved would be men, and loud, and insensitive to the fear they inspire in the child just by being men. Just imagine how much more trauma could be caused by this to a child.]
Now, you may then bring up the point that as a federal judge he would know about things like destroying bodily evidence from the child when he bathed her, etc. instead of taking her directly to a medical facility. Remember another thing, they were in a very rural, very isolated location with no phone and Ramsey Hunt was in seclusion over what he claimed was the paparazzi chasing him after having to kill some drug dealers in his courtroom. But in reality he is having nightmares, etc. of guilt over having taken a life and doesn't feel good about being considered a hero because he lost it to his anger and killed someone. He was also having feelings of impotence over the fact that because the system was so overcrowded criminals would walk free in too short of a time period anyway. Emma's situation was one he had control over. He felt that he could do a better job than the local authorities who would hurt her feelings and didn't want to turn over the responsibility of her too quickly.
As for the comments about him being almost as sickly obsessed with Emma as the pedophile - again I must point to too cynical hearts. Have any of you ever been exposed to a truly caring male? Not a homosexual with feminine tendencies but a heterosexual man with a caring soft heart? I feel sorry for our society if you haven't. I have. I was raised by one. I was married to one. I have uncles and cousins who are just as family oriented and nurturing - who take on half the care of the kids especially if their wife is pregnant again. Who would be just as outraged to their souls by what happened to that child as Ramsey Hunt's character is. Who may be just as deadly and want to take care of it on their own. (my late husband was a professional martial artist)
Especially if it's a male Cancerian and Ramsey Hunt's character reads like a male cancerian. A male cancerian would be capable of taking a look at a poor, beautiful, abused baby and adopting her. He'd want to be her father and take her in, want to care for her, "mother" her in a male fashion, feel responsible and think that no one would be able to do the job as well as he would himself. He'd take over her life and would then extend that love to her mother. (I remember a male friend telling me once that the way some men find their mates is that they see a beautiful child and then want to meet its mother because the woman who produced such beauty had to "fine" herself.)
So he never says "I love you" to Molly but he does admit, as far as he is capable, that he more than likes her. He comes to appreciate her qualities as a unique person and begins to picture them as a family. He shows her how he feels in his actions towards Emma and Molly. He takes them in and takes them over and nurtures them and lets himself be mothered by the women in his life at the same time. It's typical cancerian.
As for Molly, she comes to appreciate him and his strength and his love for her daughter. He's a handsome, caring, successful, strong, man who will care for her and protect her without patronizing or smothering her. What sane woman would pass that up? She doesn't need money she's rich. What she needed he provided. It's a formula for successful marriage more enduring than the raw "passion" of most romance novels. It's a love story of a family who comes together and of love that grows between them after they have come to appreciate one another, their strengths, and their weaknesses.
I found this book to be very touching. It left me with a bittersweet smile on my face for them as a new family and for the road that Emma would have to travel in life in order to be whole again. The mystery surrounding who was really behind the plots, them on the run, and the chase for the child molester, etc. was pretty good and kept the pages turning. Other commentators were right - it wasn't the most suspenseful book that I've read but it was a very good read. That's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Any other comments I make would be spoilers - and I hate spoilers. So I will leave you with a strong recommendation for this book as I really enjoyed it. The male character is not the typical stubborn, brooding Alpha man but caring and sensitive while still being strong and decisive. I will definitely be looking into more of Catherine Coulter's books. Ciao.

Second Chance Pass (Virgin River, Book 5) Review

I really like this series, and I even liked this book. However, of all the stories in the series, this was my least favorite. More than any of the other books, this one seemed really choppy. Only about half of the book was truly Vanni and Paul's story while the rest seemed liked separate short stories thrown together. I really enjoyed Joe and Nikki's side story, and I always like getting caught up with old favorites like Jack and Preacher, but this book as a whole didn't really flow into one main story as the others did. If you follow the series, then you should definitely read this and if you're new to the series start at the first book. I am still anxious for the next installment.

Second Chance Pass (Virgin River, Book 5) Overview

In the space of a few months Vanessa buried her husband, Matt, and gave birth to their son--breaking her heart while filling it with a whole new kind of love. But the one man she longs to share this love with now acts as if she doesn't exist.

Paul Haggerty lives by the marine motto: Siper Fi. Ever faithful to his best friend, he's done right by Matt's widow as best he can...considering he's been secretly in love with her for years. Now, just as he's about to make his move, another woman has staked her claim on him--a claim that will be tough to escape.

With courage, humility and not a little meddling from the good folks of Virgin River, Vanni and Paul might just get a second chance to have the love they both desire and deserve.

Exclusive: An Athena Force Adventure (Silhouette Bombshell) Review

Katherine Garbera returns to the Athena Force series and to the story of reporter Tory Patton and undercover operative Ben Forsythe. Their love affair was first chronicled in EXPOSED and now we meet back with them as they are struggling to find a balance between their jobs and their relationship. Tory's anchor job is what she always wanted- or so she thought as she realizes she misses doing the research and capturing the details of that exclusive. Ben's cover is that of a rich playboy and Tory is feeling a bit uncomfortable at seeing him in all the magazines with different women at his side.
Tory and Ben's paths cross once again in the fictional country of Berzhaan where American troops are fighting. Tory is tracking down her friend and fellow reporter, Andrea Jancey, who has been taken hostage while Ben is also searching for the terrorists as one of his men was taken hostage as well. Freedom Now has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and wants American troops withdrawn or the hostages will be killed. Tory has also recently discovered she is pregnant. How will Tory and Ben resolve their careers with being parents? And why does the trail for Freedom Now lead from Berzhaan to Phoenix, Arizona?
Katherine Garbera has written a suspenseful tale that could almost be drawn from today's headlines. Generally, I am not a fan of doing this as I'd rather read nonfiction for current events but Ms. Garbera does an excellent job at presenting a current story with a neutral tone. Fans of the Athena Force series should enjoy this latest addition.
