Baby Changes Everything: Embracing and Preparing for Motherhood after 35 Review

As I read the introduction, with its bible reference and multiple mentions of God and prayer, I found myself looking again at the cover and title to see if I had missed something that would have told me this was a Christian book. I did not. That left me feeling duped, in a way. While the author goes "light" on her own references to God, church, prayer and "ministry," they ARE in the text, which to me personally was a turn off. Had I known this was the writer's perspective, I must admit I would not have bought this book. There were other subtle aspects of the text that, I felt, were influenced by a Christian perspective, such as multiple personal stories and examples of mothers who chose not to have prenatal testing because they would "accept the baby no matter what" and at least two who had babies with Down's Syndrome and viewed them as gifts that were supposed to happen. Now, I don't have a problem with that, but I do have a slight problem with those being the ONLY examples provided. There are many over 35 moms whose personal values and positions do not reflect this - had the book been obviously labeled as Christian in its perspective, it would be more legitimate for it to present only one perspective.
The other complaint I have about this book is that the author spends way too much time talking about her personal situation and family. Makes for a somewhat interesting read, but feels more like a memoir at times than a universally applicable book that focuses on general issues of older motherhood in a conceptual sense which is what I was looking for.
Overall, this was not the book I was expecting or hoping to read. I'll keep looking!
