Juggling Twins: The Best Tips, Tricks, and Strategies from Pregnancy to the Toddler Years Review

I have now read three of the books that are out there on handling twin babies, and I have to say this one is absolutely the best. First of all, it is hilarious, which really makes it fun to read. But more importantly, it gave me meaningful, specific ways to cope. Not just "get help" but "here's how, exactly". I just felt like, reading it, I had a best friend or sister guiding me through the whole way, reassuring me that I could do this and telling me HOW. I feel so much better prepared for twins than I did before I read it, even though I had already read "Here They Come" and "Twinspiration." It wasn't until I got this book that I started to feel like I can handle these babies. This one is definitely going to become the go-to book for expecting twin moms. As my due date nears, I am actually now RE-reading some parts.

The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Go Get Pregnant Review

I felt I had to respond after one person failed miserably in reading comprehension. First, in the beginning of the book Savage made the point and he and Terry had discussed infidelity and were committed enough to their relationship that that would not be enough to break them up. As to the claims about the birthmother being mentally ill, they took care to show that she wasn't. She was able to care for herself, make logical decisions and was sane enough to know that her chosen lifestyle made it impossible to be a good mother to her son, hence choosing adoption. And they didn't relocate to get away from her. They lived in Seattle and used an agency there. She was currently living in Portland, but since she regularly moved from city to city, it wasn't an issue. In fact, those who bother to read the whole thing will discover a chapter in which they flew to L.A. to meet with her after the birth and to allow the birthfather to see the baby. (And according to the legal agreement they signed, they can't keep her from seeing the kid a certain number of times a year, and Savage himself deplored the fact that some adoptive parents don't follow the signed agreements.) A lot of the other complaints seem based on the fact that the reviewer could not tell sarcastic humor from genuine sentiment. Savage is not a hearts&roses style writer. He's a hardcore cynic and likes making shocking jokes, like his fake birthmother letter in which he jests about having drug addicted friends babysit. For every time he made a joke about a baby as an expensive hobby, he also mentioned looking forward to being able to teach him to walk and talk and later watching his Little League games. Plenty of other writers have made similar jokes about their children - Erma Bombeck said she wanted to trade hers in for dogs, Bill Cosby has written about wanting to send his to jail for being annoying. It has nothing to do with how they actually parent - they're just trying for a laugh. Plus, if he really thought it was just a lark, would he and his boyfriend have gone through so much to adopt?
This book has left me much more optomistic about gay adoption, but pessimistic as to the literacy of people on the internet.

The Long-Awaited Stork: A Guide to Parenting After Infertility Review

The Long Awaited Stork is the book that I wish I'd found three years ago when my twins were born! Like many other infertility veterans, I thought that my struggles were over when I became pregnant and delivered two healthy baby girls. Indeed, things are great but I still find that infertility is part of my life. I loved it when Ms. Glazer referred to the "cameo appearances" that infertility makes. It's a great description for those waves of feeling that come back when I least expect them. This book is a GREAT gift for anyone who is newly pregnant or for a new adoptive parent.

Baby Changes Everything: Embracing and Preparing for Motherhood after 35 Review

As I read the introduction, with its bible reference and multiple mentions of God and prayer, I found myself looking again at the cover and title to see if I had missed something that would have told me this was a Christian book. I did not. That left me feeling duped, in a way. While the author goes "light" on her own references to God, church, prayer and "ministry," they ARE in the text, which to me personally was a turn off. Had I known this was the writer's perspective, I must admit I would not have bought this book. There were other subtle aspects of the text that, I felt, were influenced by a Christian perspective, such as multiple personal stories and examples of mothers who chose not to have prenatal testing because they would "accept the baby no matter what" and at least two who had babies with Down's Syndrome and viewed them as gifts that were supposed to happen. Now, I don't have a problem with that, but I do have a slight problem with those being the ONLY examples provided. There are many over 35 moms whose personal values and positions do not reflect this - had the book been obviously labeled as Christian in its perspective, it would be more legitimate for it to present only one perspective.
The other complaint I have about this book is that the author spends way too much time talking about her personal situation and family. Makes for a somewhat interesting read, but feels more like a memoir at times than a universally applicable book that focuses on general issues of older motherhood in a conceptual sense which is what I was looking for.
Overall, this was not the book I was expecting or hoping to read. I'll keep looking!

Fatherless America: Confronting Our Most Urgent Social Problem Review

I am aware that you discourage people from commenting on other reviews, but I think that the following comment is needed nevertheless. A previously posted hostile review said "Just where does David Blankenhorn get off telling mothers that they're not good enough for their kids!!!???? It looks as if David here is stuck in a time warp and the people that believe this piece of trash are too. So...almost half of kids grow up with single moms. I think it's swell that women today have more choices than ever before." This reviewer clearly doesn't grasp the message of the book. First, Blankenhorn isn't saying that mothers aren't good enough for their kids. On the contrary, a careful reading of the book reveals that he believes that good mothers are just as necessary as fathers. He is not denigrating mothers. He is simply saying that neither mother nor father possesses the resources to give a child everything that the child needs. Parenting was meant to be a cooperative effort between a team consisting of husband and wife, each of whom brings unique personal qualities (some of which are gender-related) to the endeavor. It's not sexist to argue that this is the case; on the contrary, it is extremely sexist to argue that women are the only parents who are essential to healthy childhood development. As for the argument that those who agree with the author are in a "time warp," this is nothing but an unintelligent ad hominem attack designed to divert attention from the legitimate substance of the book. Just because one is dismayed by the increasing number of fatherless children, and the undeniably negative effects of that phenomenon on society, it does not make one a Luddite who wishes to return to the past. Responsible people understand that the only way to ensure genuine human progress is to constantly engage in the process of self-evaluation, both as individuals and as members of a larger society. Refusing to acknowledge mistakes which have been made in the recent past is not the path to genuine progress. One last comment: When I read Blankenhorn's description of the negative effects of childlessness, I saw my own story in the book. My Dad, who just died a month ago, divorced my mother when I was a sophomore in high school. He paid the child support payments required by law, but he apparently felt justified in reneging on an earlier promise to finance my college education, mostly because I criticized him for having engaged in the adulterous affair which led to my parents' divorce. As a result of my father's subsequent unwillingness to finance my education (even though, as a successful optometrist, he was more than capable of doing so), I have spent many years struggling financially, in jobs which were only peripherally related to my real interests. My mother loved me, and did the best she could, but the bottom line is that I needed a mom AND a dad, not just for economic reasons, but for a variety of other reasons as well. Instead, I got a mother, and an absentee father who, in terms of adequately preparing me for future life as an adult, might as well have died many years ago. Yeah, that's just "swell." The reviewer refers to the mother's choices. What about the kids' choices? Most of the children affected by the modern disintegration of fatherhood have no choice at all but to suffer the ill effects of that disintegration. Unfortunately, a lot of modern parents today are in a state of arrested development, and they think only of their own needs, not the needs of their children. This is not a sob story. My point is that Blankenhorn's assessment of our current crisis is totally correct. It's time for us, as a society, to admit that the Playboy philosophy, which essentially denies that masculinity has anything to do with parental responsibility, is morally and intellectually bankrupt. We will experience tragic episodes such as the recent massacre at Littleton, CO with increasing frequency unless and until we begin to reverse the decline of the American family.

Texas Baby (Cowboy Country, Book 2) (Harlequin Superromance, No 1441) Review

Josie Whitfield wasn't trying to break up the party when she crashed her car into the front gate of the Clayton ranch during Chase Clayton's engagement party. She was just trying to confront him with the fact that she was pregnant and he was going to be a father, and perhaps find out why he had disappeared after a quick one month fling and a new pair of bed sheets. Unfortunately, she passed out from exhaustion before she could park the car. Tired and overworked, though recently out of a job after introducing her creepy, vengeful manager to the joys of morning sickness, Josie finds her way to Chase's doorstep, only to discover that she has been duped. She knows intimate details about his childhood, but she has never seen this sexy, sensitive cowboy before in her life.
Chase Clayton is about to get married to his childhood friend and the owner of the adjoining Everly Ranch, Susannah Everly, who needs to marry to satisfy the requirements of her grandfather's will. The ranch means everything to her, and she would do just about anything to keep it. Many in town hope the marriage of convenience might blossom into something more, but Chase knows of the tangled history between Susannah and his best friend and ranch manager Trent Maxwell, and his heart just isn`t in it. The appearance of a lovely, pregnant waif who knows private details about his life, claiming to be the mother of his child-to-be certainly doesn't help. And who is this impersonator running around seducing women on his behalf? Chase and Josie join forces to track down Mr. Flim Flam, and end up discovering much more than they had expected.
Kathleen O'Brien's poetic style and her ability to create warm, genuine characters and steamy romantic tension (and occasionally a spooky, engaging murder mystery!) really set her books apart. Kathleen has a gift for story, and a companionable way of drawing readers in and making them comfortable. In the Firefly Glen series, she introduced readers to the town of Firefly Glen, the very embodiment of the joy of returning home, a place where natives and travelers alike can find a warm smile and a helping hand. In Quiet as the Grave she explored the darker desires of the heart, and created a creepy murder mystery that certainly sent a shiver down my spine. Throughout all of her books she explores the love found in all areas of our lives- the love for a niece, a neighbor, a best friend, or a life companion. Thank you for many hours of happy reading, Kathleen!

Texas Baby (Cowboy Country, Book 2) (Harlequin Superromance, No 1441) Overview

Clayton Creek ranch was the scene of a Texas-sized engagement party until agate-crasher stunned everyone with the news she was pregnant with Chase ClaytonIV's child. The "father-to-be" was the most astonished of all, since he'd neverlaid eyes on lovely Josie Whitford, much less taken her to bed.But he didn't have the heart to blame Josie for ruining the party orembarrassing his fiance not after he realized she'd been tricked by a callousimpostor. Now, working with Josie to track down the man using his name, Chasetries to ignore a new and even more shocking suspicion: Was he about to marrythe wrong woman?--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Prayerfully Expecting: A Nine-Month Novena for Mothers to Be Review

"You have been blessed with the privilege of conceiving a child, whose heart beats within you. Cradled inside you, your unborn child will be nourished and kept warm in your womb for the next nine months. What an incredible miracle!" With these words, Donna-Marie Cooper O'Boyle planted a seedling of hope in my heart with this, my second pregnancy, and nurtured it over the course of months. She didn't spoil the fun of what I would find in this nine-month journey - because not only am I not a rookie at it, but I am also not finished with it - but she did reframe it for me in a way that I never would have thought of - she turned me back to God with this, the incredible miracle of life within me. She changed my paradigm from one of self-focus to one of heavenly focus, and taking the nine months of my pregnancy and transforming them into a novena, a series of prayers, has made my bond with my baby and my Savior completely different.
Pregnancy is naturally a time of reflection. How can it not be, as your body changes and there is movement within you? However, for me, it never occurred to me to do more than just the usual prayers during this very sacred time, until, that is, the brown paper package containing Prayerfully Expecting arrived at my door.
Within its covers, I have found hope...not just for a healthy baby or a great pregnancy, but hope for the world. As I have journeyed through the months of this book during my pregnancy, I have reflected on the examples of those great women before me, especially Jesus' own mother, who have taken this excursion down the path of pregnancy into motherhood. I have also had the opportunity to write about my experience, to memorialize what it means to be pregnant this time and in the set of circumstances I'm wearing now.
Within the nine-month novena of this book, I'm finding the joy of praying and reflecting slowly. So often, I find myself hurrying through my prayers to get them done; I catch myself checking them off the list of things I have to do; I multi-task until I can do no more. This book is keeping me honest. The pleasure of opening its pages and finding out what the month holds - in terms of my baby's development and for my own spiritual growth - is enough to make me sit down, pause, and truly thank God for the miracle within me.
While pregnancy is a time of joy and thanksgiving, so often it is also a time of sacrifice and suffering. I know many mothers who have lost babies at various stages of their pregnancies, and I know plenty (myself included!) who spend the nine months fighting worries of one kind or another. I also know mothers who have great physical hardship as a result of bringing a baby into the world - from nine-month nausea and vomiting to the frustration of bed rest and limited mobility to the sickening worry that comes from finding out there is - or might be - something wrong with the little one inside. The powerlessness that accompanies pregnancy is something hidden from the balloons and singing of the showers, something that is so often borne alone. But I am finding, this time around, that having my nose inserted in Prayerfully Expecting is keeping me from focusing on the negative aspects of my "condition" when they crop up, and it's keeping my eyes trained where they're supposed to be anyway - heavenward.
I can't help but feel, as I continue to read Prayerfully Expecting, that I'm not alone. I knew that before, though. Of course I did. It just didn't seem as obvious. Donna-Marie has made this a journey I'm taking with Mary, an adventure I'm undergoing with Mother Teresa's blessing, and an opportunity that's full of scriptural wisdom and advice. With this book, she has given expectant mothers a new approach to their vocation right from the start, without any strings or preconceptions.

Prayerfully Expecting: A Nine-Month Novena for Mothers to Be Overview

This beautifully crafted book is a reflection guide, keepsake, and prayer journal that offers inspiration for each month of pregnancy in the tradition of the popular nine-day prayer, the Novena.

Don't Settle for Less: A Woman's Guide to Getting a Fair Divorce & Custody Settlement Review

Out of all the books or articles i have read on divorce, this author really gets to the point when it comes to divorce & custody. I also wrote the author Ms . Pekala, who then called me and gave me additional input that my own lawyer failed to implement on my case. I have been telling everyone to buy the book!

Don't Settle for Less: A Woman's Guide to Getting a Fair Divorce & Custody Settlement Overview

A straightforward, all-incisive guide that alerts women to the pitfalls of a hasty decision "just to get it over with," this book teaches women how to work within and around the system to improve the outcome of their divorce settlements. Divorced men have a higher standard of living than divorced women, this book helps women balance that inequity.

Your Vegetarian Pregnancy : A Month-by-Month Guide to Health and Nutrition Review

I read the other reviews, but decided to pick up this book anyway, and I'm glad I did. It makes quick reading, because parts of it are in a question-and-answer format, and you can just skip the questions that don't apply to you.
I don't think the topics are so dumb that you don't deserve to be pregnant if you ask them (?), but perhaps that's because I'm a childbirth professional and have been trained to address questions of all sorts nonjudgmentally.
What I like the most about this book is that it presents nutritional information in a way that I've never been able to find it: logically, comprehensively, and specifically for vegetarians and vegans. I was a little suspicious after reading in a review that she claims one cup of tofu has 40 grams of protein (which she does), and a quick check of my fridge shows that a whole package of tofu contains around 35 grams - but who eats a whole package in one meal?
It is bothersome that she doesn't cite her information consistently, sending me to my fridge or online to corroborate her information, but on the other hand we should never be relying on any one source for information about our health.
I especially like her tables and lists: clear, simple RDAs; examples of foods to eat that are rich in each of the vitamins and minerals, and especially her clear breakdown of lipids (fats and fatty-acids), and what foods provide them. Her information on what's in prenatal vitamins and whether they are or are not veg-friendly is great, in a small section that suggests exactly how much of the vitamins it should have and from what sources.
If you can avoid bits of vague misinformation and don't mind the question-and-answer format, this book is a clear distillation of a confusing abundance of nutritional information that vegetarians and pregnant or trying-to-be-pregnant moms need.

The Wall Street Journal. Financial Guidebook for New Parents Review

This book really brings to the forefront all the financial matters that I as a new parent have completely overlooked. It really helped me realize that I am not as disciplined financially and that my kid may suffer as a result. Yet, instead of walking away feeling guilty, I am now more confident that I can take care of myself and my family. This book showed me everything I need to know, little chunks at a time, without overwhelming me, with examples and stories to make the lessons sink in.
This book is about finances for new parents. However, as the previous reviewer indicated, it teaches not only how to take financial care of your child or children, but also how to make smart financial decisions when making choices for yourself.
While I am going to keep this book for reference when I need to make specific financial decisions, I think the greatest benefit of this book is that it made me "financially aware". As a result of reading this book, it is easier for me to connect financial decisions I am making now with the financial impact they will have on me and my family in the future. This new awareness alone is worth the price of the book.

The Wall Street Journal. Financial Guidebook for New Parents Overview

A practical approach to affording your kids from cradle to college.Bringing home your bouncing baby boy or girl should be an exciting time of celebration–not cause for worry about how you're going to pay for feeding, clothing, and caring for your new bundle of expenses. The average family will spend between $11,000 and $16,000 during a new baby's first year, and more than $200,000 before a kid's eighteenth birthday. Unfortunately, a second child only doubles your costs, with little economy of scale for each additional baby. Before you start using these statistics as birth control, take a deep breath and know that you can have a family and make a comfortable future for your children while saving for your own important goals. The Wall Street Journal Financial Guidebook for New Parents shows you the way, with information on how to: • Safeguard your child's well-being with wills, trusts, and life insurance• Best weigh your child-care options and decide whether to go back to work• Save on taxes with child-friendly tax credits and deductions plus tax-advantaged benefits at work• Manage your family's health-care costs• Save for long-term costs by setting up a college fund• Spend smart and save money at every stage of your child's development• Continue to contribute to your own retirement savingsFrom maternity (and paternity) leave to flexible spending accounts to 529 college plans, The Wall Street Journal Financial Guidebook for New Parents provides all the information you need to meet your child's expenses while also protecting your family's financial security.

Confessions of a Pregnant Princess Review

To be honest, I did not finish this book. Not because it was dragged out or I was too busy. I just realized 50 pages in that I was not hooked.
I could not sympathize with the heroine and none of the other characters seemed worth it. I thought this was a romance novel or chick lit (both of which I love) and it might have ended that way. But I was really unprepared for the first few chapters of this book. I thought that the main character, Venus, was going to be a sweet woman romanced by a young, handsome prince. Maybe the prince starts out as a workaholic and she gets tempted by a hunky mechanic. But she and the prince live happily ever after as husband and wife... in a castle. Big assumption on my part.

**Minor Spoilers** The main character, Venus, was married 3 times before her 25th birthday, she is still attracted to her green-haired ex-girlfriend who is marrying a transvestite, she works in a porn shop, and her last job was really, really sketch. Think stripper + masturbation. During that sketch job she met the first hero, Prince Marcello. Who happens to be older than her parents. That was the final straw for me. I cannot really understand romances that involve age differences greater than 25 years.
I am sorry that I could not review the entire book for you. Keep in mind that any spoilers I gave came from the very beginning and there are probably many pleasant surprises awaiting you if you choose to read farther than I did.
