Essential Fantastic Four, Vol. 4 (Marvel Essentials) Review

This volume (which reprints FF 64-83 & Annuals 5 and 6) begins perhaps slightly past the creative peak of Fantastic Four, but that doesn't mean it doesn't contain some of the best comics stories ever done! For those with any affection at all for Stan Lee and Jack Kirby storytelling, this book is a must-have. Jack was beginning to withhold his better creations from Marvel, but it is only noticeable in hindsight. It certainly doesn't feel like he's holding back. The collection contains lots of great stories featuring the FF and their supporting cast of the Black Panther, the Inhumans, Galactus, and the Silver Surfer. Two spectacular annuals particularly stand out.
The reproduction is some of the best in the Essential series. There was one error in the production of the book, a variant cover reproduced on the last page of the book is the same as the cover printed at the beginning of the book. The cover design doesn't exactly work either, and there is too much blank space on the front cover, but it is nice to see Kirby artwork on the front cover of his own material, unlike several of the other Essentials. These are minor quibbles, and I don't imagine they'll affect tne enjoyability of the book at all.

Essential Fantastic Four, Vol. 4 (Marvel Essentials) Overview

Re-live more of the FF's classic exploits as they stand united against Dr. Doom, Annihilus and Galactus!Featuring the first appearances of the Kree and the microversal Psycho-Man!Guest starring Spider-Man, Daredevil, Thor and the Warlock formerly known as Him!Lee and Kirby were the ones who started it all, and they keep it going in these cosmic tales! COLLECTING:FANTASTIC FOUR (1961) 64-83, ANNUAL 5-6

This Is All: The Pillow Book of Cordelia Kenn Review

Award-winning author Aiden Chambers presents This Is All: The Pillow Book of Cordelia Kenn, a unique work of fiction in that it is not told in the traditional narrative style of a novel; instead, its story is rendered as a "pillow book" or collection of notes recording poems, emotions, daily impressions, letters, stories, ideas, and descriptions, compiling the life of a pregnant nineteen-year-old girl who wishes to preserve and pass on her memories to her unborn child. This Is All ranges the gamut of experience, from early friendships and thoughts on classical literature to simple amusements, teenage love, and the heady pleasures of sex. A verbose, descriptive, and often intimate portrait of all the good and bad in a soon-to-be mother's life.

Reality Check: A For Better or For Worse Collection Review

This, like all the FBorFW books, is fine comfortable family viewing. It is such a shame that everyone who reads it can't see the simple beauty of having a family (though 'fictional')like the Pattersons who really care for each other, their friends and their pets. Some of the other "reviews" I have read of this book seem extremely bitter and anxious to put down those of us who enjoy simple comics and stories of families where no one is on drugs or in prison for a hate crime or murder. If you want "gruesome", go watch TV and leave our Lynn Johnston alone!

Reality Check: A For Better or For Worse Collection Overview

They say life is what happens while you're busy making other plans. And in the latest update of the Patterson family, life is "happening" and a few new realities have set in.Still adjusting to their status as newlyweds, Mike and Deanna find that two cannot live as cheaply as one, and then learn an unexpected baby is on the way. After discovering that her live-in boyfriend was cheating on her, Elizabeth swaps steady date for blank slate. And Grandpa Jim catches everyone (including himself) off-guard when he and Iris elope to England. Life, it seems, always has a new surprise in store.Lynn Johnston has been bringing life to the Patterson clan for nearly 25 years, and for readers of more than 2,000 newspapers around the world, life just wouldn't seem right without her daily dispatch. This is the magic of For Better of For Worse: it is real life at its most realistic. Like real life, it is unpredictable, enlightening, heartwarming, honest, sometimes sad, and often very funny.Reality Check gives readers more of what they've come to expect from Johnston's beloved cartoon: a sense of connection, a shared intimacy with a family as familiar as their own, and a front-row seat to the enduring, endearing comic saga called life. Like the many For Better or For Worse collections that have preceded it, Reality Check is sure to resonate with fans around the world.

Dad To The Bone, Baby Blues Scrapbook #16 Review

I thought this was one of the best comic books I've ever read. This book is enriching, funny, and good! This Babyblues Scrapbook is full of Darryl, Wanda, Zoe, and Hammie cartoons. I definitely would recommed this to children and Adults of all ages.

Dad To The Bone, Baby Blues Scrapbook #16 Overview

If you read the job description in a want ad, you might think long and hard before responding."WANTED: A man willing to change diapers that could nuke the ozone, plop down on all fours and become a horsie at a moment's notice, arise from a deep sleep for an hour to calm nightmares, and part with a significant chuck of his hard-earned nest egg."There's only one explanation for why a man such as Baby Blues' Darryl MacPherson would accept such a challenge...because he's Dad to the Bone."Now, when I coach your teams, I go out of my mind!" Every holler and scream means I'm proud that you're mind!As the years go by, pretty baby, can't believe how much you've grown!I wanna' thank you for makin' me a Dad to the Bone!"Of course, Baby Blues isn't only about fatherhood. This is a well-rounded family, with mom Wanda becoming more well-rounded every day as she heads into her third pregnancy. This latest collection of strips from the wildly popular feature is the 16th for Baby Blues, which is enjoyed by 40 million parents and kids every day.Over the last 13 years, creators Jerry Scott and Rick Kirkman have perfected this family-centered strip that presents the joyful moments with the frustrating in a way that is hilarious and heartfelt without being syrupy sweet.Dad to the Bone is sure to add to the strip's side-splitting legacy.

David, We're Pregnant Review

This is one of Lynn Johnston's earlier works before she became famous for her cartoon strip "For Better or Worse".
Unlike the strip "For Better or Worse" which is centred around the Patterson family and usually has a continuing story line this book contains one panel gags (101 in total) and has a variety of characters in it. Although for those who have followed her cartoons you may be able to find a young Elly & Michael Patterson in the book.
The book has a lot of funny gags told from a variety of perspectives including from the first time parents, expectant mothers, fathers, siblings etc.
It would make the ideal present for someone who is expecting or for someone who is a Lynn Johnston fan.

David, We're Pregnant Overview

The book that launched Lynn Johnston on her incredible career as the world's #1 female comic-strip creator ("For Better or for Worse" is syndicated in 14,000 newspapers worldwide) is getting a face-lift. After 16 years and half a million copies, it is still one of America's most popular baby shower gift books, and now it is even better. 101 cartoons.

Fables Vol. 5: The Mean Seasons Review

The fifth collected-edition of "Fables" is a much more subdued affair than "March of the Wooden Soldiers". It contains several smaller stories that advance further many of the overall plot lines lingering about Fabletown.
First, we learn of Cinderella's more devious nature in "Cinderella Libertine". The less said about this story, the better, simply because its impact lies in its ending. No point spoiling it.
Next, we get a couple of "War Stories", as we follow Bigby Wolf into his past as a spy for the Allies during World War II, on a mission that never officially happened, as Bigby leads a squad of American troops to a castle behind enemy lines.
Finally is "The Mean Seasons" proper, as King Cole discovers he was perhaps not as popular as a mayor as he thought, and his successor, Prince Charming, learns actually governing a city requires a lot more than charm. His new administration, including Beauty and the Beast, also find the elaborate system that Snow White and Bigby have in place to keep the city running smoothly.
Meanwhile, Snow White gives birth to Bigby's litter, moves to the Farm (where the "nonhuman" looking Fables must stay) and meets her father-in-law. Others leave Fabletown for various reasons, including Bigby, who is not allowed on the Farm. And some invisible creature is killing various residents of Fabletown.
While "March of the Wooden Soldiers" was and is my favorite storyline, I have to say that I found "Mean Seasons" to have quite the emotional impact. Writer Bill Willingham, after carefully building the status quo of the series for three years, has swept it away, while paying attention to the logical consequences of those changes. The result is a very touching volume in this excellent series.
DC has wisely fast-tracked this series for trade-paperback format. That's a good thing, since it's an excellent series. I anticipate future volumes.

Fables Vol. 5: The Mean Seasons Overview

Collecting issues 22 and 28-33 of the hit VERTIGO series, this trade paperback features two tales of Bigby's exploits during World War II as well as "The Year After," which follows the aftermath of the Adversary's attempt to conquer Fabletown — including the birth of Snow White and Bigby's children!

What, Me Pregnant A For Better or for Worse Collection Review

Johnston, having written for what seems to be a lifetime already, continues the story of the loveable "For Better or For Worse" family that many countries have come to love and treasure. One of the only 'real' families in comics, Johnston cleverly and eloquently mixes pain and laughter --- succinctly paraphrasing much of life.
"What, Me Pregnant?" is another chapter of the "For Better or For Worse" saga, with Elly finding herself pregnant... at 40! Her other kids in high school and preparing to go to college, this is unexpected and delightful for the fans of the series. This book tracks Elly's pregnancy and continues the personal tales of the other family members as they grow up -- and grow older. A wonderful book that will have you glued to the pages until the end.

What, Me Pregnant A For Better or for Worse Collection Overview

In this collection, Elly, who is juggling a new job, the adolescent traumas of Michael and now Elizabeth, plus the usual housework woes, finds out she is pregnant!! The shock finally wears off and the family deals with the idea of another person in their household. Then one stormy night baby April is born at home, and the Pattersons forget their worries and focus on the beautiful new baby girl, while getting used to midnight feedings and changing diapers!

Catwoman: The Replacements Review

Comic-book readers often must suffer through a "New Coke" phase in their favorite titles. Heroes as iconic as Superman, Batman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern and, as of this writing, Wonder Woman have been killed or otherwise disposed of while a younger, fresher and, almost certainly, inferior substitute takes their place. In most cases, the publisher eventually recognized the error and brought the classic version back to the fore.
Now it's Catwoman's turn and, as usual, it's probably a mistake.
In what will probably turn out to be a plotting catastrophe, writer Will Pfeifer decided it was time for Selina Kyle to get pregnant. With a baby on the way, Selina decides it's time to give up her roof-hopping and crook-kicking ways, and she passes the costume and whip on to an unlikely successor: Holly, former-prostitute-turned-lesbian sidekick.
A crash training course doesn't really prepare Holly for the job, however, and right out of the gate she runs afoul of several large problems. It's hard to imagine which is worse, the film-obsessed villain who wants to kill Catwoman or the tireless cop who wants to arrest her for murder.
Of course, it's not long before Selina is forced back into her costume (which, given her recent pregnancy, doesn't fit quite like it used to). And it's not long before her baby is put at risk because of her nocturnal outings -- and, let's be honest here, the sight of a maternally outraged Catwoman is a treat.
But New Coke never satisfied the thirst like Classic Coke does, and Holly as Catwoman is equally unsatisfying. She lacks both skill and motivation, and it appears her future must involve either an unrealistic upgrade in abilities or her constant use as a foil to bring Selina back into action and save her. Either way, I'll sip the new formula grudgingly until DC brings the real deal back to the shelves.
