Barely a Lady (The Drake's Rakes series) Review

I could make a list of ten things in this book that readers might say have been overdone (spies, check, the author's afterword says "blame it on Richard Sharpe"; amnesia, check; Waterloo, check; the big mis, check; etc.). However, Dreyer has built characters and a plot that held me to a solid read in which my interest never flagged from when it came in the mail yesterday evening until I went to bed waaaayyy too late. That's what a good author can do for the reader.
Not everyone will like it. Not one single person in the book is perfect (although one of the secondary characters comes close). Certainly the hero and heroine are not perfect, although the heroine is much-put-upon.

Jubilee (The American Anthem Trilogy, Book 3) Review

The third and final installment of the American Anthem series takes the reader on a journey of love, anguish, suspense, intrigue, grace, hope, and redemption. Life in New York in the 1870's holds fullness of life for the characters in Jubilee.
Michael Emmanuel looks forward to starting a new life with a new bride, yet seems to fail at every turn in winning the respect and admiration of his father, who had held such high regard for his former career in opera. Having turned his back on such a life, Michael is content in his work as a composer, but he struggles to complete a musical composition that is most dear to his heart. Will he overcome the feelings of inferiority his father is placing on him, heal the breach growing between them, and finish the anthem in time for it's public debut?
Dr. Carmichael has managed to forge out a respectable practice, and his clientele is growing. But will it survive the scandal that is venomously unleashed by a foe who will stop at nothing but complete destruction? And what part does a recovering opium addict have to play in the doctor's redemption, and ultimately her own?
The MacGovern family has been blessed upon their arrival in the New World, amidst a backdrop of sorrow and loss. A new menace threatens to undermine the happiness they have found, and bring it all to naught. And young Renny, who came in the place of their son, harbours a grief that seeks to overwhelm her hope of new life, new love, new family. What will it take to restore the joy this family seems to have lost in a moment of time?
Amidst all the heartbreak and uncertainty, a song of joy, a song of hope, a song of love is forming, and it's utterance upon the instruments that bear its power will bring healing to those who have come through a time of great trouble, to a time of great reward.

Ride the Fire (Leisure Historical Romance) Review

Setting - Ohio wilderness, 1757 --- Nicholas Kenleigh had served in the army, been captured and tortured by the Indians, and then escaped. The things he'd done and been forced to do, the killing or be killed - the will to survive, had changed him. He'd gone home but, dead inside, he felt for the sake of his family he'd be better off alone. Six years roaming the wilderness he was attacked once more, killing his attacker but left with a mortal wound that would surely have killed him had he not happened upon the farm of the widow Elspeth Stewart.
Elspeth, better known as Bethie, was widowed, pregnant, and trusted no man, given her history of abuse at the hands of her step-father and step-brother. She'd been married off to a man old enough to be her father who though treated her kindly, did so without any great affection. When Nicholas appeared -- looking as much like a savage as any others she'd seen, she didn't trust him at all, particularly when he stuck a pistol to her temple, forcing her to help him. Nicholas, weak from loss of blood, and after having his wound cauterized found himself at her mercy once Bethie was able to slip him a drug to knock him out. As he convalesced, Elspeth came to accept his presence, and thankfully he was there to help with the complicated delivery of her baby or both she and the child would have died. Unfortunately, their peaceful co-existence would be shattered when an old enemy came to call and they would have to rely on each other as they raced just ahead of marauding Indians in search of safety. Somewhere along the journey, Elspeth had slipped into Nicholas' heart bringing him back to the land of the living, and Nicholas knew he would do whatever it took to give her all the love in his heart as he began the slow process of healing both her heart and soul. **** WOW! Captured by savages, whose method of torturing their enemies was probably more detailed than I needed to know, the author pulls you into an amazing, sensually romantic adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat and turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning! As the second novel I've read by this author, I have to say she positively rocks! The historical events are well researched and the characters are brought to life with a perfectly sumptuous sensuality that will raise your temperature and send you in search of your partner for some loving of your own. Nicholas' body and soul had been brutally bruised yet he was able to help Bethie back from her trauma to begin the healing in her, thereby healing himself - awesome! Whew, this was one deliciously steamy and exhilarating read that I highly recommend!

Pregnant by the Warrior (Harlequin Historical) Review

this book was missing something to me. I love romance novels and it seemed a little lacking. Jared seem like a bully and Lea needs to grow a spine. Its a fair novel. I did fine myself skimming the pages to get to the interesting things. Love scenes seems lacking. The idea was great but kind of fail apart. This is just this reader's thoughts

Prisoner of My Desire Review

I am an avid reader of romance novels. I have read many but never have I come across one so original. If you read romance novels as much as I do, you would know that great, imaginative storylines are rare and hard to find. This, indeed, is one of the best books I've come across. I always find it irritating when I read a one-sided review that tells me nothing about what the book is about, so here it is [briefly]: Rowena Belleme, a young, beautiful, virginal, aristocratic woman is forced to do the unthinkable due to some terrible circumstances. She's made to 'rape' Warrick, a great Lord, who also happens to be a gorgeous, big giant of a man. After the deed is done - the reason the deed was done was because Rowena's elderly husband croaked in the nick of time and a suitable replacement was needed fast! so became the abduction of Warrick - they let the handsome knight go, never expecting to hear from him again. What a shock they were in for because in not too long Warrick was back, and with his army too. Rowena was captured, as Warrick had vowed revenge and Rowena was going to pay. She was taken to his castle, where she was repaid in kind by Warrick, over and over, again and again. After a while Rowena is made his personal servant to serve him only. I bet you can guess that his passion is very ardent and she recoils at first, fearing his lust ... I'll let you wonder the rest.
Anyway, the book was a delightful read. I'm not an obssessive fan of Ms. Lidsey's but I must say that she has done a very, very good job. I recommend this book to anyone who likes tummy-wrenching erotica along with sweet romance. I thought this book was a two-hanky read.

Prisoner of My Desire Overview

Destined to be yet another bestseller from the inimitable Johanna Lindsey.

Spirited Rowena Belleme must produce an heir - or incur the dangerous wrath of a ruthless stepbrother who stands to forfeit his ill-gotten wealth. And the magnificent Warrick deChaville is the perfect choice to sire her child - though it means imprisoning the handsome knight and forcing him to bend to her amorous whims.

Vowing to resist but betrayed by his virility, noble Warrick is intoxicated by Rowena's sapphire eyes and voluptuous beauty. Yet all the while he plans a fitting revenge - eagerly awaiting the time when his sensuous captor becomes his helpless captive. . .and is made to suffer the same rapturous torment and exquisite ecstasy that he himself has endured.

The Magic of Ordinary Days Review

At first glance THE MAGIC OF ORDINARY DAYS is a love story. Of the surface it relates the story of Livvy, who is pregnant and forced to marry a man that she does not know. The story focuses on the evolution of their relationship and the changes in Livvy's life. Her husband Ray, has the very appropriate last name of Singleton, because he is indeed a single, solitary man.
But on a broader scale, there are a number of underlying themes that the reader should be aware of. The first is the responsibility that people must take for their own acts and how what seem to be casual decisions about relationships can alter a person's life.
Issues of family relationships are also brought out in the book. Most people will identify in some way with the relationships between the siblings. Women will contemplate what they would have done had they been Livvy - pregnant and without a husband in the early 1940's - and how their own father would have reacted. The underlying issues of religion and a small community vs a large city are also present.
Author Ann Howard Creel masterfully deals with a subject that is popular among historians and this is women on the home front during the time of war. She also deals with men, such as Ray who does not go to war but still deals with issues of guilt.
Creel's handling of the issues of Japanese interment is excellent. It is a subject that many readers, espcially young readers will know little about. So her even handed descriptions are informative. In addition, most Americans have little knowledge of the German and Italian POW's that came to America.
The Hallmark Hall of Fame did a wonderful job with this novel, following almost exactly as Creel wrote it, although the did not use the first person. However, their ending was probably more acceptable to a general audience. The Japanese women in the novel to not fare as well as they did on TV. The sad part is that Rose and Lorelie were victimized by being put in the camp and then made bad decisions, just like Livvy, based on their desire to be loved.
Although this book is well suited for young readers, and could be a useful tool in an educational environment, it is also an excellent read for readers of any age. War has many ripple effects on the society and Creel deals with many of them. This book gives much to reflect on. I'm just glad that Hallmark brought it to light for millions of readers.
