Fertility and Conception: The Essential Guide to Boosting Your Fertility and Conceiving a Healthy Baby -- From Learning Your Fertility Signals to Adopting a Healthier Lifestyle Review

Without anybody or anything to guide me I came across this book and went to see it in person before I bought it. Not only did the colorful pictures illustrate ideas and concepts nicely, but the layout of the book makes this an easy read. I couldn't put it down! I found myself amazed at all the things I learned about the female body. Oh, I can't forget the male body too, that's just as important. One side note, the book talks about possible complications during pregnancy and since I already have high blood pressure, I started to get a little anxiety reading the part about pre eclampsia, a condition you can have during pregnancy (high blood pressure). So when you read this part, just take it with a grain of salt. Otherwise, the book is great and gives you much knowledge on how to conceive, the best time, how to chart it out, etc. This book went beyond my expectations. I'm glad I read it now since I can take some of the advice and become healthy now for our unborn child. I would recommend it to anybody thinking about trying to have a baby.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM) Getting Pregnant: Boost Your Fertility with the Best of Traditional and Alternative Therapies Review

Are you or someone close to you trying to get pregnant? Then this is definitely the book for you!
Raymond Chang, MD, clearly outlines how to boost fertility in couples that are struggling to get pregnant. His primary focus is on traditional Chinese medicine, but he also offers some information on foods, vitamins, herbs and other supplements that can be helpful to fertility.
Especially impressive is Chang's ability to clearly explain both the conventional Western approach to fertility as well as more natural traditional approaches. Often when writers describe Chinese medicine, it can sound esoteric, confusing and downright batty. Chang is able to speak in terms of Eastern and Western medicine in a manner that allows the couple to feel empowered and able to work with their natural fertility rather than feel helpless and "infertile," as they are often labeled by conventional medicine.
Chang provides a very balanced view of fertility and integrates both Western and Eastern medicine to allow couples to boost fertility and become pregnant. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Getting Pregnant is a must read for any couple that is struggling to conceive.
Armchair Interviews says: Good advice for couples.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM) Getting Pregnant: Boost Your Fertility with the Best of Traditional and Alternative Therapies Overview

The best of Eastern & Western medicine is combined by physician-acupuncturist Raymond Chang, who offers individualized strategies for the millions of couples who want to improve their odds of conceiving.

Before You Conceive: The Complete Pregnancy Guide Review

Although the underlying concept of this book is good, I found several problems with it which, I believe, necessitates a major revision.
First: The publication date of this book is **** 1989; TEN years ago. **** Science progresses very quickly and there have been many new studies, discoveries, and issues raised (*especially* in the area of prepregnancy and pregnancy) which the book undoubtedly does not cover at all, does not cover enough, or may simply have incorrect information on. Due to the publication date of the book, I found myself very suspicious about certain information in the book, especially when the author makes a statement such as "not much is known," or "studies are still needed." I also feel suspicious when I read the statement that MRI is a "new and still experimental medical procedure." Ten years ago, MRIs * were * new and experimental-10 years ago I sat in one for two hours to have 4 pictures of my hand taken-now, MRI is well-established and takes considerably less time. No doubt, more research on its uses and effects has been done. In another example, the book mentions folic acid somewhat, but recent studies have put a brighter spotlight on this vitamin and new information has come out that may benefit us.
Second: The book, in my opinion, spends too much time focusing on risk factors that are specific to certain ethnic groups, people with certain diseases, people with past pregnancy problems, and other issues that are not applicable to everyone. Pages 149-369 are just that, and I found myself simply skipping most of the pages because I am not from certain ethnic groups and I do not have pre-existing diseases, I have not been pregnant before, I am not over 35, and I am not particularly at risk for particular (ethnic-specific) genetic diseases. I was disappointed that I paid for such a large book, most of which I ended up skipping.
I do not deny that these issues are important, however, I would suggest that the book be revised to include, in addition to updated information, more explanation of the areas that are common to * everyone * in order to make the book more useful to everyone.
For this, specifically, I thought that the sections dealing with toxins and medications were not complete enough, and that they could be expanded, as I know that exposure to toxins and the effects of medication are my MAJOR concerns when it comes to pregnancy. The section dealing with toxins did not list HOUSEHOLD toxins, rather it listed toxins in the workplace. One occupation in the table was titled "homemakers and domestic workers" and vaguely listed the toxins as "detergents, soaps, hydrocarbons, solvents, alkalies, bleaches, formaldehyde." I would like to see a list of brand names of common household products (cleaners, detergents, soaps, fabric softeners, air fresheners, cooking sprays, etc.), what chemicals they contain, and what the risk factors are, similar to the list of prescription and OTC drugs. I would like to know what I should and should not be using in my house, and perhaps a list of toxin-free products could be included.
The list of OTC drugs should also be updated to delete medicines no longer on the market, those with changed names, changed formulae, and to include drugs that have been introduced in the past ten years. The same applies for the list of prescription drugs, especially to include the wide variety of birth control pills now available.
Therefore, if the authors read this, I want to suggest that this book DESPERATELY NEEDS an updated edition to accomplish what I outlined above, as well as to correct some spelling and grammatical mistakes I encountered in the first few chapters.
I did appreciate the list of questions to ask yourself about preferences for an obstetrician, and the list of questions to ask the doctor and the prepregnancy checklist were both particularly helpful.
For the reader, I would suggest a more updated book on the subject, if it exists, until the authors can revise and update this book. If there is no other such book, then this is an excellent start.

Before You Conceive: The Complete Pregnancy Guide Overview

Parenting Begins Before Conception: A Guide to Preparing Body, Mind, and Spirit For You and Your Future Child Review

My husband and I have read a number of books to help us fully understand what it means to be a future parent and what we can do to prepare for a successful and healthy conception. Dr. Rosen's book offered us an incredibly comprehensive view of the issues -- everything from practical tips on nutrition and lifestyle to explorations of the emotional links to your future child's soul. You'll find pearls of wisdom in this book that your own parents probably never even considered! It's well written, easy to follow, and the questions at the end of each chapter allow you to tailor the information to suit your unique needs.

Parenting Begins Before Conception: A Guide to Preparing Body, Mind, and Spirit For You and Your Future Child Overview

' Shows prospective parents how they can lay the foundations for a healthy and happy family life even before their child is conceived and born.

' Shows parents how they can optimize their children's physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

' Guides parents through a unique program designed to prepare them for the myriad changes, adjustments, and joys that accompany the major transition to parenthood.

An inspiring and groundbreaking book, Parenting Begins Before Conception shows prospective parents how they can lay the foundations for a healthy and happy family life even before a child is conceived and born. New research contends that prenatal life and the birth experience are often profound determinants of human personality and aptitude. Hundreds of university and hospital studies conclude that unborn children see, hear, and feel in the womb.

Dr. Carista Luminare-Rosen explores the universal forces underlying conception and shows parents how they can optimize their child's physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health by considering a host of important issues well in advance. Weaving together modern preconception and prenatal health knowledge with ancient wisdom, the author guides parents through a unique holistic program designed to prepare them for the myriad changes, adjustments, and joys that accompany the major transition to parenthood. Dr. Luminare-Rosen helps readers consider their own readiness for parenthood--physically, psychologically, and spiritually--so that when the child of their dreams arrives, they are fully prepred to welcome this new being--body, mind, and soul.

The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby Review

Finally, here's a book about pregnancy that addresses real issues for real moms. (I wish it had been available when I started my family, and not when I was pregnant with my last child.) In addition to what you might want a pregnancy book to include, this book covers so many important topics that others gloss over or simply omit'infertility treatments, bed rest, pregnancy loss, surrogacy (there's even a sample contract in an appendix), high-risk factors and treatments, emotional responses to pregnancy and motherhood. Although the book contains over 800 pages, it's organized so that you can get just the straight facts quickly or read all the details at your leisure. The easy, approachable tone is also professional, so you intuitively sense the authors' authority on the subject. And, unlike some pregnancy books that contain a lot of 'fluff' and are mostly good for entertainment, this one is rich with useful information from the medical and maternal community. Throughout, the book reinforces the notion that although nearly every pregnancy has its own quirky personality, most pregnancies are 'normal.' In short, it alleviates--rather than creates'paranoia. For example, where many pregnancy books lay down the law on what you must eat, how often you must exercise, and so on, this book is entirely forgiving of the expectant mother who is so sick with nausea that she can't choke down her daily broccoli allotment, or too busy or exhausted from working or running after her other children that she can't exercise. Sprinkled throughout each chapter are helpful hints, warnings, practical sidebar information (which reads like the whispered advice from a good friend), and the quoted experiences of many real-life moms, all which give the book a broad swab-stroke of knowledge about this most mysterious, profound, terrifying, worrisome, and joyous time of life. This is the book that I expect to recommend to my girlfriends.

Before Your Pregnancy: A 90 Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception Review

I really wanted to like this book. I wasn't even expecting it to have lots of information that I didn't already know, having done a ton of research myself in my role as fertility counselor, but thought that it would be slightly helpful at least. It was not. It was instead incomplete and incorrect.
Conclusions made are inconsistent - thing A is to be treated with caution because its safety for pregnant women is unproven, whereas thing B is considered safe because it has never been shown to cause problems. Where is the logic here? There is no difference between "never been shown to cause problems" and "safety unproven". And if there is a difference in the proven safety of these two things, it should be stated explicitly rather than left at these two vague comments.
Some statements are just plain incorrect. For example, it is stated that ovulation is the day of the basal body temperature rise, when in fact the temperature rise usually occurs the day following ovulation. Also, intercourse on this day is stated to give the best chance of conception. This is incorrect whichever way you look at it - intercourse on the day of the temperature rise is usually too late (being the day after ovulation, the egg is often dead by then), and intercourse on the day of ovulation is still not the best timing (for those who are interested, intercourse the day before ovulation is best, although difficult to time). I have to wonder what other "facts" in this book are downright wrong.
Finally, conclusions are drawn without sharing the information used to make them. It is claimed that a woman who has no immunity to rubella must get vaccinated, stating that the potential risks of the vaccine far outweigh the benefits. Nowhere is it mentioned that an adult woman receiving the rubella vaccine has much higher risk of serious medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and thrombocytopenia, and that according to the CDC the incidence of rubella in the US is extremely low. Whether or not the benefits of this vaccine outweigh the risks is something for women to decide for themselves, with all pertinent information.
Now, I would expect a book written by two doctors to side more often with medical gospel than not, but I was very surprised by the lack of portrayal of the other side of the issues. Or more to the point, that some things were treated as complete non-issues: women are encouraged to run right out and get the flu and chicken pox shots, with no mention of their risks or efficacy.
I should say that I did find the information on weight, diet, and exercise to be very thorough and mostly consistent with other reading I have done. Still, I simply cannot recommend this book.

The Pre-Pregnancy Planner Review

This book verges on scary in its heavy reality-based content designed to help you decide to have a baby (or not). If you already know you want to get pregnant, and are just looking for guidelines on the healthiest, smartest way to do it, stay away from this book. It will not psych you up or make you feel good.

The Pre-Pregnancy Planner Overview

Much has been written about preparation for childbirth. Wilson is unique in covering the previous steppreparation for pregnancyin this thorough, up-to-date guide. She covers a wide range of concerns that are best resolved before conception. Topics include the parenthood decision, diet and exercise, financial and career adjustments, and more. The book emphasizes the practical rather than emotional issues involved in contemplating pregnancy.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

What to Expect Before You're Expecting Review

WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE YOU'RE EXPECTING is just like the other books in the expecting "series:" Jam packed with information in a good format. There are sections for both the "Mother to Be" and the "Father to Be," but neither are exclusive and should be read by both parties; in fact, there is more for men in this book than What to Expect When You're Expecting: 4th Edition. You probably already know what to expect given the monumental success of the previous Expecting books, and this book is no exception. Sections of the book include: Nutrition, Basic Anatomy, Ovulation, Timing of Intimacy, Miscarriage and Infertility, Medications, and tons of other little questions.
This book is excellent, but the next few comments should not be taken as criticisms but rather just information.
The difference with this installment is that there is more humor woven into the text than the previous books, which helps lighten the load; however, the humor at points is too much of a good thing, and the writing can seem juvenile and uses a lot of immature phrases (i.e. Aunt Flo), which I feel undermines the writing slightly.
One other thing is the book takes some of the magic away, providing step by step instructions, hundreds of pages of what to do better. I can totally appreciate how this book may help people who have struggled with conception, and I feel this book will be revered in that case. However, for everyone else be prepared to have the magic of conception possibly ruined as baby making becomes a job, you are forced to follow a specific calendar, and monitoring your diet. I know that at least a handful of people have successfully conceived and delivered healthy babies prior to this book being published, but this book could be the saving grace for any couple that is struggling to conceive. It reminds me of the movie Knocked Up when the characters are discussing how in the world people had babies before baby books were published.
Overall, WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE YOU ARE EXPECTING is a great resource, and should be read in smaller doses because it is so information and fact heavy; however, the humor (which at some points is rather juvenile) effectively lightens the load.
Good reading,
J.Stoner

Balancing Pregnancy with Pre-Existing Diabetes: Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby Review

As a type 1 diabetic embarking on the pregnancy journey, I found it frustrating that there were no books "for me." It was difficult to find in-depth diabetes information even in the best pregnancy guides. When, and if, diabetes is mentioned in most pregnancy books, it is brief, and left me with the feeling that I needed more information. I found it in Balancing Pregnancy with Pre-Existing Diabetes. This book is a blend of useful, smart information (like what blood glucose numbers to expect in each trimester and what kinds of numbers to expect on the "big day") with a girlfriends-talking-over-tea conversational banter (with tons of different opinions, because, as we all know, diabetes is not one size fits all). I couldn't wait to get my copy, and I was not disappointed! I am a much more confident mama-to-be with this book at my bedside. Finally, a book for us!

Balancing Pregnancy with Pre-Existing Diabetes: Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby Overview

Diabetes can affect women at any stage of life. If not managed properly, expectant mothers with pre-existing diabetes are more likely to encounter complications such as preeclampsia, cesarean section, and infections. Balancing Pregnancy with Pre-Existing Diabetes: Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby, is a down-to-earth guide for diabetic mothers-to-be. Author Cheryl Alkon has lived with type 1 diabetes for 31 years and brings a wealth of understanding to the subject. Unlike existing books written in dry scientific language, this one focuses on firsthand accounts by diabetic women sharing their pregnancy-related experiences. Topics include what is diabetes, finding the right doctor, strategies to successfully conceive, the first, second, and third trimesters, labor and delivery, balancing the woman's health needs with those of her child, infertility and pregnancy loss, resources, and more. Balancing Pregnancy with Pre-Existing Diabetes offers a complete guide for diabetic women who want to successfully plan their pregnancies.

Get Ready to Get Pregnant: Your Complete Prepregnancy Guide to Making a Smart and Healthy Baby Review

This book was a very interesting read for anyone thinking about getting pregnant. I really appreciated the information about nutrition, handling stress and a healthy environment and have started to change my way of life already, even though it will probably be another year before we start trying. I gave the book 4 stars instead of five because of the last section that is "just for men." I was very disappointed with this portion of the book and it left a sour feeling for me. While the book gave more science based information for women, it took a turn in talking to men in a "man-to-man" sort of way. The discussion about infidelity turns into this madness of don't cheat on your wife, though wives sometimes cheat on husbands, and how there are sometimes questions about who the father is....and so on. I felt like it was an episode of the Maury show or something. Men are just as stressed out as women about the whole pregnancy thing, and I feel that this portion of the book adds unnecessary stress. The book should have simply provided information about how to make good sperm and give support - the end. I think the chapter for men defeated the purpose of preparing both parents for creating a healthy and smart baby. I hope Dr. Lu reads this review and takes this into consideration for future editions.

Making a Baby: Everything You Need to Know to Get Pregnant Review

After reading the other reviews, I can see how some reviewers didn't feel this book was for them. It does focus a lot on infertility treatment. I bought the book because my doctor suspected that I might have difficulties either getting pregnant or staying pregnant. But, I also couldn't remember all the advice my doc gave me on what days were my most fertile. I found this book and it covered everything I wanted to know, including: why I might have trouble conceiving/staying pregnant; what types of treatment are available; how to tell when you are ovulating; and the proper timing to ensure optimum chances of conception. I got pregant (naturally) the month after I bought this book and I know exactly when I conceived. I personally enjoyed reading about the infertility challenges and treatments. But I can understand how some people who don't have those concerns would prefer to have a book focused strictly on "how to" make a baby without using medical intervention. So, I'd recommend this book for those who are trying to conceive the old-fashioned way, but who may have infertility issues and want to understand those issues and how they can be treated.
