Scoundrel In My Dreams: The Runaway Brides Review

I would just like to start out saying that I haven't read the other two books that go with this series. In the future I might read them because I really did enjoy the premise behind the series even if it was a little out there. When I first read the story I was a little confused by what was going on. Just an fyi it starts with a story and then goes into the future, but then goes back in time and then goes in the future four years later....see why I was confused. Just keep reading and all the back and forth will make sense.
Jack and Laurel well they have an interesting back story. Jack is "in love" with Laurel's sister and Jack had to leave while they were courting because of war. He comes back and Laurel sleeps with him to soothe his heartache over the loss of his cousin who died. When Jack wakes up he think that he slept with Amy instead of Laurel and goes and talks to her father for her hand in marriage. He comes to find out that Amy has moved on to bigger and better things and doesn't want to marry him. He leaves and doesn't come back for four years when he gets a letter from his friend telling him to come home.
Laurel tries to get Melody back from Jack and he locks her in an attic...I know.....seriously who does that!!! This is one of the things I mean by out there. I still liked the story. Jack is an interesting character he isn't charming and doesn't know exactly what to say he struggles...a lot. You are really able to see his and Laurels growth throughout the book and that is something I enjoy in any romance novel. It is like you are on the side lines to their romance. I don't want to say much else because I don't want to give away the rest of the story. Anyway, Melody is seriously adorable and I wish that if I were to have a child she would be just as cute, but I am not going to get my hopes up.
I use to be a nanny to an adorable little girl. Melody made me think of her and what a blessing children are and how they really have the power to open people's hearts.

Barely a Lady (The Drake's Rakes series) Review

I could make a list of ten things in this book that readers might say have been overdone (spies, check, the author's afterword says "blame it on Richard Sharpe"; amnesia, check; Waterloo, check; the big mis, check; etc.). However, Dreyer has built characters and a plot that held me to a solid read in which my interest never flagged from when it came in the mail yesterday evening until I went to bed waaaayyy too late. That's what a good author can do for the reader.
Not everyone will like it. Not one single person in the book is perfect (although one of the secondary characters comes close). Certainly the hero and heroine are not perfect, although the heroine is much-put-upon.

I thoroughly enjoyed For The Roses- and went straight to the library to find these 3 smaller books. Their length did not bother me. But they did seem a little shallow. Out of the 3, One White Rose is the best to me. I did enjoy the story and would recommend others read it. The other 2 were silly and too unrealistic to me (especially One Red Rose).

Because You're Mine Review

I'm surprised to see some of the bad reviews here. I throughly enjoyed this book and finished it in a day. While some may see the plots and characters "formulaic", heck, they work-and I might add,similar plotlines have worked for some of bestselling romance writers as well for years. "If it ain't broke why fix it?"
Logan is a great "tortured" hero. 30, been around the block and then some with many lovers, but had only one "true"love that betrayed him. Madeline is the perfect yin to his yang. Sweet, full of love and patience, but still a strong woman. Unlike others, I found it likable that here is a regency heroine who refused to sit back and be betrothed to a truly horrid person just because it's the "right" thing for her parents interests. She was willing to accept whatever fate her actions caused, and that would have been huge in those days.
It was refreshing to see characters, hero & heroine both, who were basically abused growing up (he was physically, she was neglected/emotionally put down) that went on with their lives and became productive members of society rather than let their misfortune make then abusive themselves. The sub-plot dealing with these issues were very engrossing to read.
The playhouse storyline was refreshing as most regencies deal strictly with the "ton", so this was a unique change of pace. This book struck me as similar in chemistry and plot movement to some other well known authors like Johanna Lindsey and Amanda Quick. I think Miss Kleypas has a long and illustrious career ahead of her and will in time become as popular as some of these authors if not more.
The love scenes are highly sensual-I found nothing "icky" about the fact that she was 18 and he 30-hell, the man her parents wanted her for was probably at least 50, so what's the big deal? Marriages with this age difference were common in this time period, so I didn't find it implausible in the least.Highly entertaining, highly recommended 5 stars!

Captured by savages, whose method of torturing their enemies was probably more detailed than I needed to know, the author pulls you into an amazing, sensually romantic adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat and turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning! As the second novel I've read by this author, I have to say she positively rocks! The historical events are well researched and the characters are brought to life with a perfectly sumptuous sensuality that will raise your temperature and send you in search of your partner for some loving of your own. Nicholas' body and soul had been brutally bruised yet he was able to help Bethie back from her trauma to begin the healing in her, thereby healing himself - awesome! Whew, this was one deliciously steamy and exhilarating read that I highly recommend!

The Vagabond Duchess (Harlequin Historical) Review

The Vagabond Duchess is a bit different from most historicals around. It takes place in 1666, with repercussions from the king's exile, the vicious spread of the plague and the horrid London fires. Because of this the characters are excellently flushed out. Jack, the Duke, does masquerade as a vagabond at times. It was a persona he picked up while exiled in France; he was forced to hide his background. This makes him resourceful and resilient, but unwilling to put himself at the whims of others. Temperance is a shopkeeper that has lost her entire family and was left to fend for herself, she's independent and strong-willed. Naturally, when they meet each other the sparks fly. They have both found someone to lean on.
The plot line basically follows their intial courtship while Jack is a vagabond and then Temperance's life as the new Duchess. I would say this work is more driven by its characters,a very good thing. It is such a warm, sweet story. The only thing I would change is Toby; a very spoiled child. So many tantrums and no one to discipline him, especially since his dad was a wanderer and most likely let him have his way out of guilt at not being home all the time. I felt bad for the sweetheart that was Issac, he was forced buddy up with the brat.

The Lightkeeper Review

In purchasing this book, I paid more than I typically do for a novel, but it was worth every penny!
Mary, pregnant and unwed, washes ashore after a tragic boat crash. Though she considers herself "damaged goods" and has, as an Irish immigrant, suffered cruel and prejudicial attitudes, she's a very charming and lovable character, bursting with life and love and vitality.
Jesse, the reclusive lighthouse keeper of Cape Disappointment, finds himself a reluctant savior to Mary when he rescues her on the shore of Cape Disappointment. Jesse's pregnant wife died 11 years ago, and he has held himself, solely, to blame ever since, abandoning a carefree life of privilege and high society for a lonely monk's existence, deprived of any joy or human contact, as, for penance, he keeps watch, nightly, over the ocean which took everything from him.
Embittered, hardened, and self-loathing, Jesse's character is very deeply tortured (puts me in mind of Jane Eyre's Rochester) and fights desperately against the flame that Mary's unexpected presence in his life is rekindling within his heart while she recuperates in his home.
Jesse avoids Mary, but she seeks him out; he tries to put her off with his scowls and harsh words, but she continues to draw out the kind and loving man lurking beneath the surface against his will. Slowly, her companionship, affection, and love begin to thaw the heart he has deliberately frozen and hardened over so many years, and it terrifies him.
This book was so beautifully written and so very deeply touching and filled with such raw, human emotion, passion and desire, I still find myself reflecting on it, days after I've read it. I found myself rooting for Mary and Jesse from the beginning and still cheering for them in the end. Fantastic!

This was the very first book that started me off in the direction of romance novels. I started at 10pm one night, and didn't finish until 4am. I refused to put it down. I thought that the book was excellently written. I truly felt each character's emotions. I was also laughing out loud at many of the scenes.
I liked Kate's character, although I wish she would have told Wroth off a little more. Especially since her character was a spunky one. I've read this book 3 times over already. I find that there is the same amount of enjoyment each time. It's a truly wonderful love story.

And my review:
This book was written before the author switched to inspirational (Christian) romance. So if you are a fan of her later works, don't read this expected a "clean" romance. While it's not a lust-soaked book, there are sex scenes in it (and not in the context of marriage).
PROMISE ME TODAY is part of a trilogy. It's obvious from the very beginning that Abigail's two sisters, Amelia and Anne-Marie, have their own stories, seperate from this book.
One thing that was irritating was how similar the sister's names were. Abigail, Amelia and Anne-Marie. I felt like I needed a cheat sheet to keep them all straight. I had a hard time remember which one was the heroine of this book until the sisters were seperated, each rescued by a different man.
The interactions between the hero and heroine were lively and funny. I loved watching the sparks fly between these two. Both of them were liars, and I should have hated them, yet for some reason, I didn't. I found myself cheering for both of them, even though they were very flawed. The heroine, especially, has made a life of conning innocent people. I should have hated her, but the author made me want to see her happy. Not many writers can accomplish that, so I applaud the author for a job well done.
My big complaint with this book is that there is no ending! All the plot threads are just left dangling, presumably to be tied up in the other books of the trilogy. No happily ever after, no commitment between hero and heroine (the hero is just starting to think about settling down with her when the book abruptly ends), no "I love you"s spoken! Argh! I read romance for the happily ever after and the "I love you", and it never came! Not only that, but everything else was left as loose ends. What would happen to the baby they'd rescued along the way? Would Abigail be reunited with her sisters? Would Barrett continue working as a Confederate spy? Nothing was answered! While I don't mind series books, I like each book to be able to stand on its own. I felt cheated that I'd read the whole book, but didn't get a whole story. And I wasn't satisfied enough with this book to bother spending my money seeking out the others in the trilogy.
**Warning! Spoilers ahead!**
Near to the end of the book, I felt that the hero's behaviour changed. He started out fine, but got more childish and selfish as the story went on. The way he acted toward the heroine got on my nerves after a while. The woman nurses him through a raging fever, and he never says a word of thanks. He won't offer her a commitment, yet he acts like a spoiled child when any other man even says hello to her. The first time the hero and heroine make love dances very close to the line of rape. It's not quit by force, as the heroine stops resisting from the first kiss, however, it did make me a bit uncomfortable. Some readers would call it "forced seduction". However, if you are sensitive to that sort of thing, I would recommend you pass this one by.

Unfortunately for Abigail, she was grabbed by a twit of a shoe salesman, Mr. Hershall Digman. Of course she tried to steal his horse, only to discover the dandy was a Confederate spy! With murder in their eyes and lust in their hearts, they embarked on Drake's mission together, knowing that when fire and kerosene mix, the flames may burn out of control....

Unforgiven Review

This is the sequel to Balogh's Indiscreet, and worth reading for that reason alone, since Indiscreet introduced the 'Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse', as Rex, Kenneth, Nat and Eden were known during the Peninsular war. For those who wanted to know more about all four characters, this book gives you what you were looking for.
At the end of Indiscreet, we're left with quite a cliffhanger concerning Kenneth: he has to return home to marry a woman who is having his baby and whom he says he dislikes more than he has ever disliked anyone in his life (and this can't be a spoiler, since it's part of the plot summary on the cover of Unforgiven and on this site!). I, for one, was desperate to find out exactly how this had come about.
Kenneth and Moira, we learn right at the start of the book, have known each other for years, but their families have been estranged for generations. We learn that Moira, Kenneth and their respective siblings were friends in secret as children, but it's apparent that something happened which not only tore apart those friendships and the burgeoning love Kenneth and Moira felt for each other, but also renewed the family quarrel with a vengeance.
Moira has just agreed to marry her distant cousin, a prosy, pompous, self-important bore who also happens to be the heir to her family home, at the point when she meets Kenneth again. It's very clear to the reader that their mutual dislike hides a very mutual attraction. However, both suppress it very heavily indeed, and more might never have come of it had Moira not attended the Christmas ball at Dunbarton and overheard some comments about herself spoken by Kenneth's mother and sister. She foolishly goes out to walk home alone in heavy snow...
I have to admit that the circumstances in which the child was conceived made me raise an eyebrow; I still find it a little difficult to accept that Kenneth would propose, and Moira would accept, that particular course of action in those particular circumstances. Nevertheless, that's the premise Balogh went with, and I was able to ignore my reservations and concentrate on the story.
The way in which two stubborn people who did not want to be married to each other, and who can't seem to be able to speak to each other without causing yet more misunderstandings, come to realise that they do actually love each other - and that they can actually *tell* each other that fact - is very well told by Balogh. She does do misunderstood lovers very well indeed.
Unlike some reviewers, I didn't find Moira's behaviour childish, although Kenneth accuses her of that more than once. She's certainly stubborn. And she believes, as we find out later, that she has very good reason to hate him, and therefore she resents the need to ask him for anything at all - and his own imperious, occasionally domineering Earl of Haverford manner doesn't help. As for her refusal to accept at first that she was pregnant, how many of us can exist in a state of denial over something we would rather wasn't happening? And she did face up to the truth eventually.
I did like this book a lot, and will be reading it again. Now for Nat's story in Irresistable!

I was almost convinced there was no way for them to be together. The story unfolds dramatically and romantically. Surrender to the Highlander is a good story with a perverse and cruel villain and many amiable characters.

Stolen Ecstasy Review

Leanne Summers gets involved in a bank robbery when she tries to help after being thrown out of her house by her supposed mother. Hunter, one of the bank robbers takes her with him as she can identify the outlaws. His need to protect her from the other outlaws is strong as is the attraction between the two. I really liked Leanne as she was no pushover and spoke her mind while Hunter found it amusing. While this book has 426 pages, pretty thick, it is not boring so it could be read quickly as it is difficult to put down. I have yet to be disappointed by any books written by Hannah Howell...

The Hazards of Hunting a Duke (Desperate Debutantes, Book 1) Review

First, I would like to address M. Garland who didn't care for this book and wasn't sure she would read any more. Don't let this one book influence your opinion of a really wonderful author. I've read all of Julia London's books (save for the Highlander series because I'm just not into that sort of thing)and this is my least favorite. She wrote Devil's Love and Wicked Angel and then the Rogues series and they were all really, really good. Even her contemporaries are worth a read.
This book grinded me for several reasons and I'm not just picking on London here, but every author who does it. Two people marry for convenience and then one day, the woman decides she wants more out of her marriage and she starts to pout and whine because he can't give her more for one ridiculous reason or another. They become estranged and then poof, one day he wakes up, gets hit with a brick and realizes that yes, he does love her. Then everything is fixed and good thing, because she's usually pregnant.
Another thing that I'm tired of seeing is the total lack of communication between husband and wife. If my husband saw me come out of the woods with another man (a little role reversal, but the same idea)whom he suspected I was having an affair with and I really wasn't, I would say a little more than, "I'm sorry." It only made Jared look more guilty and gave his wife yet another reason to sulk. Why didn't he explain to her what really happened??? Why is there always such a frustrating lack of communication between the hero and heroine? Why can't they just be honest and forthright with each other so that we're not left skimming through the several pages of 'she couldn't live like this' and 'he couldn't live like this' before they FINALLY decide to really talk to each other?
Ava set out to find herself a husband with a prestigious title and a few bucks in his pocket. Jared set out to find himself a wife who would not repulse him in bed. I would say he would have a bigger axe to grind with the gold digger than her with him but it didn't play out that way. We were to believe that she was the wronged one and, as usual, it's the guy who's brought to his knees.
It's not a boring read but I did tire of all the sulking going on. And just because I wasn't as impressed with this book as I've been with some of London's others doesn't mean I won't read her forthcoming books. I always look forward to another of her works in print.

Today's Embrace (East of the Sun #3) Review

After reading the other two books in this series, I could not wait for the third installment. I was not disappointed. It provided me with a detailed looked into married life as God wants it, and the conflicts that arose between Evy and Rogan by not following God's will. I enjoyed the fast pace of everything that has happened so far culminating in South Africa and how my knowledge of each character was enriched. The story is not sugar-coated and light. I would recomend this to anyone interested in romance, history of South Africa, and an understanding of God's loving will in our lives.

Infamous Review

I haven't picked up a Henley book in over a year and I was saving this title for a rainy day. My goodness, has our beloved author lost her touch, or was this just an "ooops"?
This story had some promise in the beginning, but swiftly lost its luster and became boring and tedious. Henely always includes much history in her novels, which is interesting, but not so much this time around.
Overused phrases like "ethereal beauty", "my magic man", "liquid tremors" and even her catchphrase of "I have quite made up my mind!" that I assume was meant to be charming...just wasn't and turned silly and redundant.
Our heroine, Jory, didn't seem brave or headstrong as the author tried to make the reader believe. She was so easily adaptable to any situation thrust at her and ridiculously green in her supposed selfless acts. Even her anger lacked spine. I know Ms. Henley was trying to create a character different from her usual *hellcat*, but her attempt just fell short of the mark and there was no charm left.
Our hero, Guy de Beauchamp, wasn't strong enough. They made constant reference to the age difference, and he seemed sort of doddering, lovesick and infinitely malleable. He waited by the sidelines for five years to get what he so desired? Not what I'm used to from Henley at all! Her male characters typically would have gone out and dragged their ladylove back no matter the consequences. This Infamous warrior was trying to be respectful of her wishes? That of a 17 year old girl? Please! I was waiting patiently for him to take control of the situation and stop Jory from making such mistakes with her life. By the time the two get together, she was well used by others and to be honest, treats Guy with the same level of devotion as she showed her other mates. I didn't believe in this romance for one minute!
Oh well, every author is allowed a dud. I guess this one was it for Virginia Henley.

Devil's Embrace (Devil's Duology) Review

I am aware that Coulter pushes the envelope sometimes, but this book is just inexcusible. I can't decide if I find I'm more amazed that it was published in the first place or that Coulter appears to be proud of this monstrosity. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Cassie.. I have nothing against the poor girl. In fact, I liked her quite a bit. She deserved none of the terrible things that happened to her. Apparently, Coulter hates her. It is the only way to explain the sadistic way she treated.
Cassie, seventeen and in love a soldier named Edward, forgoes her season in London to marry her sweetheart post haste. The day before her wedding, she sailing when Anthony Welles's, Earl of Clare, yacht over takes her small craft. He forces her onboard, wrecks her boat against the rocks so everyone will think she's dead, then cheerfully announces his intentions of taking her to Italy to marry, whether she wants to or not.
I hate Anthony. He should be castrated. I think he just be the most vile 'hero' to ever make his way into the genre. Anthony is twice her age and he loved her intitally because she looks like her dead mother who he was also in love with. He claims he loves her for herself after watching her blossom over the years. Cassie tries using logic to persuade him to take her back, but..oh, this jerk has an answer for everything. His smugness when he explains his skewed version of reality to Cassie as if she were a stupid child is what I hate most about him. Yes, and he does talk to her as if she were a child. Daddy knows best I guess. (Yuck!)In his twisted mind, the way to get her fall in love with him is to degrade her. Of course, he rationalizes it in his own speacial way to make it seem like she is acting like a hysterical ninny. When he first rapes her, it's taking her virginity to ensure she can't go back to Edward. When he whips her, it's light discipline. When he forces her to sleep naked with him, it's getting her used to him.
If there's anything to recommend about this book its the prose. They are very well written. Suprisingly, the dialogue runs smoothly. Absent is Colter's annoying 'sex dialogue' where the hero discusses the heroine's 'soft white belly' etc. Anthony has a few of those lines but they sound more clinical than stupid.
There is nothing in the least romantic about this book. I could finish it, but from other reviews I've learned many other tradegies befall poor Cassie. This book is just evil. Cassie and Anthony's relationship kept making me think of stepfather who rape their stepdaughters. When Cassie starts to feel desire for him, I can only shake my head and sigh. Obvisiously, he's repeated "You will come to love me" so many times she's become brainwashed. This is a stomach-churner and I can't concieve of why it was reissued. I thought the whole rape/captive stories had been dead and buried but I was wrong. It's novels like this that give the genre its bad name.
In short, 17-year old heroine + smug rapist hero= vomit inducer.
This is the story of the degradation and abuse of a young girl disguised as a romance.

Darcy & Elizabeth: Nights and Days at Pemberley (Pride & Prejudice Continues) Review

I preordered this book even before it was released. It is a sequel to "Mr. Darcy Takes A Wife," which is a sequel to Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," one of my favorite books. Even though "Mr. Darcy Takes A Wife" could never measure up to "Pride and Prejudice," it was somewhat entertaining, and had its good parts. This book, on the other hand, was a complete waste of time.
The first hundred pages or so was dedicated to reciting in different ways what happened in "Mr Darcy Takes A Wife." I have read the other book!! Else, I would never have bought this one. What I was wondering though, was whether the author herself had reread her own book before writing this one, because there were differences in the details. If she didn't remember her own book as well as me, it was already off to a bad start. But that was not the worst part.
The whole book has no real plot. There are some small plots here and there, mostly after the 300th page. And even those are beyond predictable! How can it be interesting if I always know what is going to happen next? And why can I always tell? Well, first of all, the characters have no depth. They are not at all developed, and exclusively one dimensional. Darcy is always perfect and devoted, Elizabeth is always bold, even when it's stupid to be so, Wickham is always cheating, Lydia is always imprudent, Bingley is always weak, Jane is always nice, etc. Austen's characters and the changes in their thoughts throughout the original book were simply fascinating. There is a difference between being consistent in character personalities and being boring. Here, I couldn't even recognize a resemblance of those characters, except for, of course, their names.

But then, how could the characters be developed if there wasn't really anything HAPPENING?! I am not at all against the sex in the book, so long as it's not the only activity going on for Darcy and Elizabeth for most of the book. Well, it is very close to that. We hear about them having sex on the balcony, out in the garden, in their specially-ordered-double-size bath tub, in their carriage, on Lady Catherine's shelves, etc. I got the idea. Please, move on. It's perfectly fine to include the sex, so long as there are something else too for the main characters, whom the book is named after. In the beginning of the book, if they are not having sex, they are thinking about when they can have it. Fast forward to some small plots at the end. The whole plan of Lady Catherine took forever to unveil, and when it did, it turned out to be completely stupid. I thought it was going to be something interesting, but Good God, you even call THAT a plan?! She went through all these troubles to get her daughter pregnant. The plan was to ask Darcy and Elizabeth to let their new son marry this new baby to unite the wealth. Well, they said no. That was the end of it. So much for the plan. Or the whole story about how Elizabeth tried to deal with Wickham when he came back. Elizabeth couldn't seem to change her mind enough. We read pages of how she was going to go see Wickham, and solve it all, so her husband wouldn't have to. Then all of a sudden, she realized something that was obvious to everybody else long before, that it would be safer with her husband. So she hurried to look for him. Then she saw him WALKING with his former lover, walking for God's sake, and decided to abandon that plan too. Then she went back to Wickham alone, it was dangerous, but she got out. However, she basically solved absolutely nothing. Her husband then, on his own, came back and had to deal with Wickham anyway. I mean, is that really Lizzy?! What a shame...

And I haven't even mentioned the weirdest events either, such as the whole "whatever you call it" between Mrs. Bennet and the painter; or how Charlotte was still nursing her 5-year-old boy who was mentally retarded, or how her Elizabeth, after being Charlotte's good friend for so many years, left uncomfortably..
The best thing about this book, is that even if you buy it and finish reading it, you will probably forget it right away anyway. So it won't bother you that long. But the time you spent on the four hundred and something pages could be used in so much better ways.

The Devil You Know (Rutledge Family, Book 3) Review

I can't tell you how much I loved this book! This is only my second Liz Carlyle book - my first was "No True Gentleman" and that's where I first met thoroughly lovable scoundrel Bentley Rutledge. Now I'll have to go back and read all of Ms Carlyle's books to read the stories of the various wonderful secondary characters.
Bentley is a complete rogue who spends next to no time in polite society. But it seems he's always been a part of Frederica "Freddie" d'Avillez's life, as he's her cousin's best friend. When Freddie is thrown over by the man she thought to marry, Bentley is there to console her (he's always had a soft spot for her). But one thing leads to another, and before either realizes it, Freddie's been ruined. Next morning Bentley writes a very pretty proposal letter that, unbeknownst to him, Freddie never receives. From her perspective, he's just taken off, no good-bye, typical Bentley. Though it hurts that he's just walked away, she does not hate him, for she threw herself at him and must also take some of the blame. When consequences from their night together develop, Freddie plans to leave for the continent to marry a non-existent husband, but when Bentley finds out, he's outraged (and hurt) that she's rejected his proposal to marry a stranger! How could she?!
Eventually, Bentley convinces Freddie to marry him, then takes her home to meet his family. It is immediately clear to Freddie that there is bad blood between Bentley and his older brother Cam, but why? And Bentley seems different here - preoccupied, tense, unable to sleep - not the carefree Bentley she always thought she knew. As the days pass she knows that something is seriously wrong, but he refuses to discuss it with her. So how is she to help this husband she has come to love so desperately?
Bentley is just so sweet and lovable - I just adored him. And he's carrying some heavy guilt and serious resentment over events from his childhood and early teen years. You just ache for him to resolve his difficult relationship with Cam, and you yearn for him to allow Freddie into his heart. He's a good man, if only he could believe it. And Freddie is a strong heroine, determined to help her husband anyway she can and keep her marriage together.
It's rare that a book can have you laughing one moment and in tears the next, but this one definitely does! So well written, such wonderful characters, it's simply marvelous. Highly recommended!

Prisoner of My Desire Review

I am an avid reader of romance novels. I have read many but never have I come across one so original. If you read romance novels as much as I do, you would know that great, imaginative storylines are rare and hard to find. This, indeed, is one of the best books I've come across. I always find it irritating when I read a one-sided review that tells me nothing about what the book is about, so here it is [briefly]: Rowena Belleme, a young, beautiful, virginal, aristocratic woman is forced to do the unthinkable due to some terrible circumstances. She's made to 'rape' Warrick, a great Lord, who also happens to be a gorgeous, big giant of a man. After the deed is done - the reason the deed was done was because Rowena's elderly husband croaked in the nick of time and a suitable replacement was needed fast! so became the abduction of Warrick - they let the handsome knight go, never expecting to hear from him again. What a shock they were in for because in not too long Warrick was back, and with his army too. Rowena was captured, as Warrick had vowed revenge and Rowena was going to pay. She was taken to his castle, where she was repaid in kind by Warrick, over and over, again and again. After a while Rowena is made his personal servant to serve him only. I bet you can guess that his passion is very ardent and she recoils at first, fearing his lust ... I'll let you wonder the rest.
Anyway, the book was a delightful read. I'm not an obssessive fan of Ms. Lidsey's but I must say that she has done a very, very good job. I recommend this book to anyone who likes tummy-wrenching erotica along with sweet romance. I thought this book was a two-hanky read.

Setting - England, 1831--- Izzy Temple is a rather non-descript and plain young woman who has convinced herself that she would never marry. After all she knew was very plain, but she was intelligent and she had a dream. Of course, her dream was not like the one she was experiencing at the moment with someone nibbling at her neck, caressing her body, and causing all kinds of delightful feelings in the pit of her stomach - but wait a minute, this was no dream! Screaming out and reaching for a candelabrum next to her bed she had just knocked her assailant senseless as the door to her bedchamber was thrown open. Several people came running to her aid. Among them was the fantastically beautiful Lady Claire Bottomly, whose horrifying expression of shock and embarrassment made Izzy realize in an instant that Eppingham, Julian Rowley had mistaken her room for his assignation with the much more desirable Lady Claire. As Julian's father came through the door expressing his disgust with his son, Izzy made the split second decision to protect both Julian and Lady Clair by claiming a lover's quarrel rather than everyone's assumption that he was raping her. Actually, fessing up as being ruined would solve a big problem for her. As the days progressed Izzy was quite pleased with herself that she was to be labeled a `fallen' woman - this way she could set up her own household living alone as an `independent' woman until she would eventually leave England for America!
Unfortunately, Julian in trying to accommodate his father's wishes (and believe me his father ends up being a real beastly, unloving, horrid father) agrees to marry the plain little spinster or he would be disinherited. He is astounded when Izzy promptly turns him down, but after he explained his situation, soft-hearted Izzy agreed to a fake betrothal that she could end within a suitable frame of time, even if she really and truly would love to marry the handsome Lord she was fast losing her heart to. Originally, Julian thought himself immune to the plain spinster, but as he spent time with her - originally as part of the `deception' - he realized that she wasn't plain at all, and when he was with her his heart felt lighter - could this be love?
This was a totally delightful and satisfying read. I don't remember enjoying a heroine so much as Izzy (sweetly nicknamed Isadorable by Julian) and her matter of fact, down to earth outlook on life. Her going away present to her horrid little cousin Sheldon was a hoot and the way she stood up against and `dressed down' Julian's father was magnificent! The reader is just bound to love her transformation from plain Jane to Isadorable. If I have any complaints at all, it would be that the secondary characters (Eric, Lady Claire, cousin Millie, etc.) were so endearing that I feel bereft in not seeing the story continue into a series.... I just hated to see this end even though the author does tie all the ends up with a neat little epilogue. For a debut novel this one is most deservedly worthy of the RITA it has won.
