Scoundrel In My Dreams: The Runaway Brides Review

I would just like to start out saying that I haven't read the other two books that go with this series. In the future I might read them because I really did enjoy the premise behind the series even if it was a little out there. When I first read the story I was a little confused by what was going on. Just an fyi it starts with a story and then goes into the future, but then goes back in time and then goes in the future four years later....see why I was confused. Just keep reading and all the back and forth will make sense.
Jack and Laurel well they have an interesting back story. Jack is "in love" with Laurel's sister and Jack had to leave while they were courting because of war. He comes back and Laurel sleeps with him to soothe his heartache over the loss of his cousin who died. When Jack wakes up he think that he slept with Amy instead of Laurel and goes and talks to her father for her hand in marriage. He comes to find out that Amy has moved on to bigger and better things and doesn't want to marry him. He leaves and doesn't come back for four years when he gets a letter from his friend telling him to come home.
Laurel tries to get Melody back from Jack and he locks her in an attic...I know.....seriously who does that!!! This is one of the things I mean by out there. I still liked the story. Jack is an interesting character he isn't charming and doesn't know exactly what to say he struggles...a lot. You are really able to see his and Laurels growth throughout the book and that is something I enjoy in any romance novel. It is like you are on the side lines to their romance. I don't want to say much else because I don't want to give away the rest of the story. Anyway, Melody is seriously adorable and I wish that if I were to have a child she would be just as cute, but I am not going to get my hopes up.
I use to be a nanny to an adorable little girl. Melody made me think of her and what a blessing children are and how they really have the power to open people's hearts.

Scoundrel In My Dreams: The Runaway Brides Overview

The child is his: Jack, or rather, Lord John Redgrave knows it the instant he glimpses the blue-eyed girl who was abandoned on the steps of his gentleman's club. Her mother came to his room one dark night more than three years ago--and spurned his proposal the very next day. But when Jack visits Amaryllis Clarke to demand an explanation, he receives the shock of his life. For it wasn't proud, worldly Amaryllis with whom he spent that soul-stirring night. It was her infatuated younger sister, Laurel.Laurel was only seventeen when she gave her innocence to Jack--and paid a steep price. She might be overjoyed about her reunion with little Melody, but Laurel won't surrender to her desires again. Jack, meanwhile, has no wish to give up the daughter he never knew he had. Nor will he part with the sensual woman who makes him feel alive with longing. He intends to use any means possible to convince Laurel to stay. After all, all's fair in matters of seduction--especially to a scoundrel in love...

Unspeakable Losses: Healing From Miscarriage, Abortion, And Other Pregnancy Loss Review

Reading this book has been a very thought-provoking experience for me, on many levels. I have read many books on miscarriage and other forms of pregnancy loss, but none has attempted the links that this book has.
The author looks at the way in which pregnancy loss is seen by Western societies and explores the resulting effects on women who lose babies in different circumstances. There is much balance and sensitivity in this book, which is a tremendous achievement for the author.
What I found particularly illuminating was the way in which case studies are used to look at how losing a baby can echo previous experiences, particularly in childhood. Whilst readers are unlikely to be carbon copies of the people described in the case studies, there are many subtle threads within them to make you just stop and think, and begin the fascinating process of making connections between your own experiences.
I wrote down some key quotes from it in my journal, so that I could reflect on them and see if applying them to my own experience of pregnancy loss and childhood would reveal any new interpretations for me. There are not many books which achieve that level of insight!
The reference section at the back includes Internet web sites, which reflects how up to date it is.
All in all, a terrific book which the author should be very proud of writing.

Separate Beds Review

Separate Beds is without a doubt one of the best books I've ever read. It is a wonderfully written book about two people and how their lives change when their actions on a blind date result in an unexpected and unwanted pregnancy.
Catherine Anderson is a college student who comes from a poor family. Her father is an abusive alcoholic and her mother is a frail creature who doesn't stand up for herself. Catherine's life is a struggle and she isn't shown any love by her family. Clay Forrester, however, is the guy who has it all--money, great looks, a fast car, a family who loves him and everything he wants at his fingertips. These two are set up on a blind date and when Catherine shows up at Clay's house with her father Clay doesn't even remember her. Clay's pressured by his family to do the right thing and give the baby a name. Clay and Catherine agree to a marriage that will keep Clay's name reputable and will give the baby a name. Catherine will get a college education and financial support for the baby. They agree to divorce after the baby is born. Their marriage though must look legitimate and not like the business deal that it is. However, they begin to have feelings for each other but their pride stands in the way. Will the marriage work or will they go their separate ways?
This book is just incredible. It is written with such feeling that the reader forgets these are fictional characters and begins to care about what happens to them. I found myself cheering Clay on when he tries to help Catherine understand her feelings. The reader can really see how much Clay cares for Catherine and how much she cares for him, even though she won't admit it.
This is a wonderful story. I was sad to finish this story as I wanted it to go on. The characters were all well developed and the story was great. This book is a guaranteed page turner as you just have to keep reading to see if these two can put pride aside and let their love for each other show. A book to put on the keeper shelf and read again. I highly recommend this book.

Pregnant With The First Heir (Silhouette Desire) Review

Matt Ransome, 32, was determined that his brother, Jeff's child would be raised by the Ransom family.
He has a proposition for her - give her money, pay for her schooling, she wants to be a lawyer, and raise her baby on the Ransome ranch.
Olivia Brennan is a wiley one - she comes back with a proposition of her own - she will accept half of the money, seeing as how she can live at Matt's ranch - he will marry her to give her baby legitimate claim to the Ransome family and fortune - she will sign a pre-nuptial agreement - and no sex.
She was taken in by one brother - she would not fall for another one.
Matt has been in one marriage and will not try another - women were not to be trusted. Margo had left him for another.
He has another brother, Nick, 31 and a sister, Katherine, 28, - Nick is not the marrying kind but is reliable - Katherine has also stated that she has no intention of marrying. Matt's dad is the one to convince that they need Jeff's child.
I had to chuckle as Olivia was one strong minded woman - no sex before marriage - and she stuck to her guns - she had learned her lesson - she is whale of a cool character - even with the hormones working overtime. Even Matt couldn't resist his hormones.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- definitely a keeper.

Pregnant With The First Heir (Silhouette Desire) Overview

TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS...All Matt Ransome knew was that some penniless stranger was carrying his dead brother's child. And any Ransome heir was going to be raised in the family tradition of wealth and power—whether its mother liked it or not.ONE BEDOlivia Brennan let the arrogant, infuriating Texan drag her off to his sprawling ranch, on condition that he marry her—in name only—to give her child a father. But the wildfire heat that blazed between them made her wonder if she could keep her own bargain....--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

The Solomon Sisters Wise Up (Red Dress Ink Novels) Review

I really enjoyed this book. I picked it up yesterday and couldn't put it down until it was done. I do disagree somewhat with a previous reviewer who described this as a "screwball" romp. While there are some humorous elements, this is actually one of the warmest and most realistic chick lit books I've seen so far. The only thing that threw me a bit at first was that the whole book is in first person, and yet there are three main characters, but once I got to know them, it didn't matter. All three stories were touching and enjoyable, and I found myself really rooting for the characters. I also found the subplot with father and his young wife interesting, and thought she did a great job of showing how these three girls get to know each other and discover that their father isn't exactly what they thought.
This is the kind of book to curl up with for the evening, and then loan to all your friends when you're done! I read her first one, See Jane Date, which was cute, but this one is much deeper and overall just much more fun.

The Firefighter's Secret Baby (Harlequin Super Romance) Review

This book is a fiction romance book, but UNREAL! The woman almost dies, has a baby , still has iv in her arm and 24 hours later having sex! And the man performs oral sex on her! I guess the writer has never had a baby, and how about the editors? Guess they didn't really read this one?

Notes From The Underbelly Review

I wish there was some way to rate this above five stars because this book is definitely worthy of more. This book is about Lara Stone who decides to go along with her husband's request to have a baby and ends up pregnant. The only thing is; she really doesn't like kids since she works with them on a daily basis at a prep school. As the book goes on, she discovers that she really has a "motherly" instinct in her. This book made me laugh many different times which is really hard to do since I don't laugh while reading books. I found that I related to her well. I have an 18 month old daughter, but am really not a kid person; except of course with her, and a lot of the things she said reminded me of things I've said. It's a really fun read and I highly recommend it.

Notes From The Underbelly Overview

As a guidance counselor at an elite, Bel Air high school, Lara Stone is definitely not ready to have any spoiled, bratty kids of her own. At least not now, when she has finally managed to Tae-Bo and low-carb herself down to a perfect size four. But her husband has different ideas, and they include fatherhood. Now. Suddenly, Lara finds herself deep within the underbelly of pregnancy, as a cranky, non-glowing mother-to-be dealing with uncontrollable crying jags, inexplicable weight gain, and scary hemorrhoids. And her mood doesn't improve when she's given the task of getting one of her students-the punk, outcast daughter of a famous movie director-into a highly competitive college. Expecting is nothing like Lara ever expected.

My Husband's Girlfriend: A Novel Review

"A celibate husband and wife are the two most dangerous people on
Earth" rings true as the story of Neil and Anya Meadows unfolds in Cydney Rax's
novel, "My Husband's Girlfriend." Anya Meadows is a stay -at- home wife
and mom who suffers from a hormonal disorder that leaves her sex drive
nonexistent and her marriage in a whirlwind. The Meadows' marriage
faces the ultimate test when Neil's mistress, Danielle, gives birth to
his baby.
When Anya decides to step up to save her marriage, Danielle
goes into overdrive in an attempt to save her relationship with her
married lover. Neil wants more than anything to resist the temptation
Of his mistress, save his marriage and raise his children in a
workable situation. Through prayer, love, and some explosive twists
and turns, the Meadows come to a realization and a solution that turns
conventional marriage and forgiveness on its ear.
"My Husband's Girlfriend" explores many of the deeper issues
concerning marriages, relationships, parenting, and religion. Although
this novel is slower paced than Rax' previous novel "My Daughters
boyfriend", the change in style and tone in this novel work to the
benefit of the plot. Cydney Rax has a talent for making her characters feel like the family next door with a twist. I would recommend this book to all fiction fans.Reviewed by Porscha

Where the Heart Is (Oprah's Book Club) Review

You know that you like to laugh, as well as feel sober and near tears. This is a book that should please. The well-thumbed trade paperback in our library continues to be checked out and praised. Even since the movie was released, folks still want to read the words of Billie Letts, a comic, heart-felt word crafter.
Such great names as Novalee and Americus Nation, Willy Jack Pickens, Sister Husband, Moses Whitecotton, make the reader want to see what this is all about. And Novalee's superstition over the number 7 adds to the folksie manner in which Letts develops her story. As to plot, a baby born in a Wal-Mart, why not?
In one episode, you find yourself laughing out loud, and in another there is suspense, sorrow, and a teary eye. Letts gives you the full experience in a book that can't be put down. Add these characters to your friends in print. And read The Honk And Holler Opening Soon, too. While not a sequel, exactly, it does depict another set of Sequoiah, Oklahomans who are a part of another good story.
Letts is a talented story teller. For a relaxing good read, try her books.

Life-Giving Love : Embracing God's Beautiful Design for Marriage Review

I've been waiting years for someone to write this book -- a book that gently but irresistably makes the case for the Catholic Church's teaching on marriage and family life. Kimberly Hahn has made it worth the wait. I could call this book an encyclopedia of Catholic family life -- it's that complete! -- but that would give the wrong impression. This book makes its points, makes them clearly, and makes them with real-life stories that are far more vivid than any strings of quotations from Vatican documents could ever be. LGL's recurring message is this: living a faithful life may be difficult at times, but it makes for a happier marriage. This is my own experience. I've seen it borne out again and again in my friends' marriages. Mrs. Hahn captures this joy that's hard-won, but lasting: "it's not simply a command to be obeyed, but it's a truth to be lived." People like to gripe about Christ's teaching, especially in the area of sex, but it's the only teaching that's true, and so it's the only one that works. The alternatives are dreadful -- witness the epidemics of divorce, STDs, and broken hearts.
I don't want to give the impression that this is yet another tome about sex. It's much more than that. It's a way of life. One remarkable appendix offers detailed lists of things we can do to help mothers, from early pregnancy through birth. Other lists suggest helps for "When Dad Travels," "After a Miscarriage," and "After Adoption." This is a powerful, practical guide to Christian friendship.
Another useful and unique feature is Mrs. Hahn's chapter on infertility. As someone who suffered four years waiting for my first pregnancy, I can't thank the author enough for what she's done here. She gives a good list of things NOT to say to an infertile couple ("You must have all the time in the world to do the things you want!" "What's it like to shop alone?"). Her list is long, but I think I heard every line at least once. Still, she doesn't just issue "don'ts." She also sketches out conversation starters that can be genuinely comforting. So none of us ever need be at a loss for words. She does the same for miscarriage (another matter I know from experience).
One last thought: Mrs. Hahn is, without a doubt, a true-blue Catholic; but, as a convert, she knows how to speak gently, persuasively to those who are unconvinced. In my volunteer work, I meet all sorts of women, who believe all sorts of things; but I can't think of too many who would be insulted by what's in this book. You can buy a copy for each and every skeptic in your life.
For all the awkwardness she spares us -- and all the comfort she enables us to give to suffering friends -- Mrs. Hahn's book is worth at least three times its sticker price.
I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Life-Giving Love : Embracing God's Beautiful Design for Marriage Overview

God has a beautiful design for your marriage. Have you discovered it? Blueprints for building a family seem to abound today. But the countless plans proposed donÂ't all agree, and married couples are often left confused. Where can we turn for a true vision of what it takes to build happy, healthy, holy families? Kimberley Hahn takes us back to the One who designed marriage in the first place. GodÂ's wonderful plan for the family is clearly revealed in the time-tested teachings of the Catholic Church. Hahn offers a fresh but deeply rooted perspective on the true meaning of marital love and its implications for a number of significant issues: natural family planning, contraception, infertility, abortion, sterilization, and miscarriage. She draws from Scripture and Church teachings as well as poignant personal experiences from dozens of families who share their stories. Their testimony will help you rediscover the path of prayer, sacrifice, and self-discipline that God intends for married couples--the path of life-giving love.

Tiny Toes: A Couple's Journey Through Infertility, Prematurity, and Depression Review

I recently read Tiny Toes and found a lot of great technical information on the subjects of infertility and premature birth woven into a pungent story of a couple who had to deal with both of these issues.A must read for any couple looking into and wanting incite into infertility options or the chalenges presented by premature births.

Tiny Toes: A Couple's Journey Through Infertility, Prematurity, and Depression Overview

Tiny Toes is a personal story of a couple struggling to create a family. The author tackles the effects of infertility, including how it almost destroyed her marriage. She illustrates the emotional trials of having a premature baby and how that, too, impacted her soul and her marriage. She also demonstrates how she was able to overcome the depression that was keeping her from her own joy. The impact of infertility can extend to the soul of your very being. Watching your baby struggle to survive each day is not something any parent should have to endure. Yet, every day 1 in 9 babies are born too soon. Postpartum depression is being acknowledged as a disorder that occurs fairly frequently. Women who experience infertility and/or the premature birth of a child are more likely to encounter some form of depression than are women who have healthy pregnancies. This story details the emotional trails of these complex life occurrences. In the end you'll see the transformation of the author and you will be moved by her journey.

Mixed Blessings Review

I checked this book out of the library. I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it because at the time I was suffering through my own infertility. But once I started I was hooked. I could relate to Diana so easily, the heartache that occured at the same time each month, and the feeling that there was something wrong long before I went to any doctor. Like Diana, I too was able to overcome this problem, and now have two beautiful sons (our own biological children, too!) I didn't relate quite as well to the other couples, but did find their stories facinating as well. The research Danielle Steel did was very good except for one flaw - when Pillar had her miscarriage around New Year's she was back in getting another insemination done the next month -I also had this procedure done and doctors will not do this procedure for three months after a miscarriage. Also her discription of the procedure itself was a little different than mine. But excellent reading none the less!

Mixed Blessings Overview

After the wedding of Diana Goode and Andrew Douglas, Diana teases that they will make a baby on their honeymoon. But long afterward, she is still not pregnant. As Diana and Andrew wait out each month only to be bitterly disappointed, they are forced to question just how much they are willing to go through to have a baby. Charlie Winwood dreams of a house filled with children. His bride, party-girl actress Barbie Mason, has other ideas. When he discovers he is sterile, Charlie has to rethink his deepest values -- and his marriage to a woman who shares none of his dreams. After ten years of living together, Pilar Graham, a prominent Santa Barbara attorney, marries Judge Brad Coleman, who is nineteen years her senior and father of two grown children. They are happy with their comfortable life together, à deux, until Pilar begins to wonder if she will someday regret not having a baby with Brad. Are they crazy to begin now -- with Brad about to become a grandfather and Pilar with a busy career, and in her early forties, possibly putting herself at risk?Through the lives of these couples, Danielle Steel shows us the mixed blessingswe face as we build our families and live our modern lives. She touches us with the triumphant people who prevail, their victories, their defeats, their tragedies and joys, their compromises, their lives.

I'll Cross the River Review

An old Chinese proverb states, "An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. The thread may stretch, or tangle, but never break." In I'll Cross the River, the need of a North Korean refugee, named Young Soon, meets the courage of a Chinese missionary/evangelist, named Mei Lin, in a collision of grace orchestrated by a sovereign, loving God. It is the story of two strangers, who never actually meet, but whose lives are bound together by this red thread of hope.
This red thread concept fascinated me because I had learned several years earlier that one of the Hebrew words which translated as "hope" in the Bible is tiqvah. Tiqvah finds its origins in the verb qavah meaning "to wait for" or "to look hopefully" in a particular direction. This verb's original meaning was to "stretch like a rope." The word tiqvah is found in Scripture 33 times, and in Joshua 2:18, 21, it is translated as "line" or "cord." You will recall that prior to the "attack" on Jericho, Joshua sent two spies into the city. Rahab hid them and helped them escape from the city by letting them down the outer wall by rope (Joshua 2:15). She asked them to spare her family when they conquered this great walled city. The spies told her they would, and instructed her to tie a scarlet tiqvah (rope or cord) in the window where she had let them down. If she brought her family into her home, and had this scarlet rope hanging from the window they would be saved. In much the same way, the red thread saves Young Soon's family. The scarlet rope of hope is symbolic of the redemptive work of Christ that saves us. It is interesting that Joshua's name means "God saves," (just as Jesus' does) and Rahab is one of Jesus' ancestors. There is something about this whole red thread concept which transcends cultures.

I'll Cross the River is based on actual accounts from North Korean defectors. It will educate you as to the human misery to which the world has, to this point, turned a blind eye. This is a people who are starving for food and for truth. Your heart will be pierced as you hear the story of the suffering and deception of the North Korean people. The lack of action on the part of the United State in response to this situation will agitate you. But at the same time it will motivate you to do something about it.
It made me want to arm the angel armies with my prayers. It made me want to equip the missionaries with God's Word. It made me want to go - to do what I can, where I can, when I can, under the prompting of the Holy Spirit, and in His power. This is not a feel- good summer read. This is a clarion call to arms in spiritual warfare for the country of North Korea.
Hope - just like the author's middle name, is at the heart of this moving story. Once you read this book, your life will be forever bound to this people by this same red thread - a thread of hope in our Savior, Jesus Christ.

I'll Cross the River Overview

Lay still pretend you are dead, Young Soon told her trembling young son as she lay, bleeding, on the ground, and nestling her nursing baby closer. How could the daily messages blaring from the loud speakers be wrong? Loyal communists believe government announcements that North Korea is the only country prospering, as the rest of the world is depressed and starving. Was it all a lie? After reading a smuggled newspaper article about life beyond North Korea, widowed and pregnant Young Soon is determined to flee her beloved country with her son and baby to find food and safety in neighboring China...across the river. Near the riverbank and above the guardhouse looms a great red dragon. Its tail sweeps back and forth across the river and smaller evil-looking creatures scurry beneath it. Far above the red dragon, Heaven s warriors, dressed in white, charge courageously. The dragon seems distracted, but not defeated. What s to become of Young Soon and her children?Miles away in China, Mei Lin has a heart-pounding dream about a baby crying out to her from murky waters. Who is this baby? How will she find him?I ll Cross the River is a true-to-life novel that depicts the incredible human tragedy occurring today inside North Korea. The prayers of many bring two families together in a story you will never forget.

Julie's Gift: Memories of London Review

I just read 'Julie's Gift' written by Kevin Kirsch, a husband who is not a feelings sharer, but through this novella lets us all know (including his wife) that he does have deep feelings. It is a nice light read that may make you look at your unromantic partner a bit differently since it reminds you that just because feelings are not shared doesn't mean they're not felt. The plot is not riveting and you won't find a car chase, but that's the best part. It revolves around a couple's anniversary trip to London, England. The husband admits his idea of a trip is from the couch to the fridge, but goes out of love for his wife. It unfolds from there. The coolest thing about this book is that it was penned in secret by the husband and presented to her as a Valentine's surprise! Julie's Gift has great sample itineraries (how they actually spent their days in London) as well as the author's Top Ten London Travel Tips for the Guys (funny and useful list).
Not everyone is romantic or able to share feelings aloud, and many of those people are men. This book is a thoughtful and dare I say passionate shout to his wife to tell her that even when he doesn't say so, he is happy and lucky to be with her.

Julie's Gift: Memories of London Overview

Kevin and Julie travel to London. Kevin loathes sightseeing. Julie is the quintessential tourist. Kevin ends up enjoying the trip but doesn't tell Julie. He secretly writes a book about his fond memories to surprise her and express his love.

Room for Two Review

Anyone would love this book.I couldn't put the book down from the time I started it. It is well written, and uplifting, if you can imagine the subject matter being uplifting. Abel writes from the heart, and you literally feel what he is feeling. I was surprised to read a book written by a man that had so much feeling expressed. I would recommend this book to anyone, not just someone who is going through a similar circumstance.

Room for Two Overview

"Sweetie, I'm home." I tried to put as much kindness into my voice as possible. I didn't want to have another argument - at least not right away. Silence. "Sweetheart?" A gunshot echoed from our bedroom, followed by the sound of a bullet casing skipping along a wall. Everything slowed down. When a life is destroyed, when guilt says you played a role in its destruction, how do you face the days ahead?Twenty-six-year-old Abel Keogh chooses to ignore the promptings he receives concerning his wife's mental illness, and now he feels he is to blame for her choices. If only he had listened . . .At some point in our lives, each of us face devastating afflictions and must eventually cope with loss. Regardless of how it happens, the outcome is still the same - we are left isolated, alone, wondering what we could have done differently, and where we can turn for peace. This is Abel's story in his own words. His search for peace and the miracle that follows is proof that love and hope can endure, despite the struggles and tragedies that shape each of our lives.

A Certain Slant of Light Review

Peter lives a solitary life along the rural Maine coast; Elaine, eight months pregnant, comes into his life in the midst of a terrible ice storm, seeking a solitude of her own in which to sort out her life. In this beautifully crafted novel, the secrets each carries are revealed early in the plot. It is to see how Peter and Elaine each come to terms with their own secrets that keeps one reading.
Peter has spent the last twenty years living in guilt for the loss of his family to a fire while he was away at a bagpipe championship. Winning the national prize was no comfort for him upon learning that his whole family perished in the blaze, and so, he retreats to his lonely existence at a family cottage, never playing the pipes again.
Elaine crashes into his quiet and well ordered life, refusing to be moved from her spot. She too, has demons with which she must wrestle, but hers are spiritual. Her religion does not allow transfusions, and because of a youthful transgression, she may have a baby with Rh postive blood. Peter, with much trepidation, allows her to settle in to find the answers she needs to her problems. Her baby is born, and their life takes on a new type of ordinariness, cadenced by the daily rhythms of milking, planting, cooking and tending to the flocks. As Peter comes to enjoy her presence, he also comes to realize that his past is passed, and he needs to come to terms with that, too.
This quiet story glows with the depth of the characters and their thoughts, and the reader, through the author's ability to evoke a sense of place, can feel and smell the barns, the rhubarb pie cooking, can hear the quiet night sounds of the cabin and the plantive singing of Elaine or Peter finally playing his pipes again. The story moves along, much like life itself, through normal days, dramatic events, quiet epiphanies and endings that are hopeful, but not Hollywood.
