Your Pregnancy Devotional: 280 Days of Prayer And Inspiration Review

I love this book even more than other pregnancy devotionals because it has a concise 1-page reflection, devotion, and verse for every day of your pregnancy. The verses and reflections are timely -- just what mom is going thru at that time. The verses are very well laid out. I often find that what the author writes on that day is just what I was thinking myself...It is also a soothing journal for those who may have lost a baby before. I'll give this to all my pregnant Christian friends.

Expectant Prayers for Expectant Mothers Review

I was looking for a daily devotional that I could use during my pregnancy that allowed me to pray for my unborn baby, as well as leading me through all the things I am experiencing as an expectant mother. I bought 6 devotional books, and I found this one to be the best in terms of prayer and devotions. I am currently using this daily as I found the prayers comforting and builds faith during this time of waiting.
Although the presentation of the book is not the best of the ones I bought, what I love about this book is that it has a daily devotion & prayers for each day of your pregnancy, and it guides you to devote through issues that new mothers may experience like anxiety, pregnancy symptoms, changes in perspective, parenting, etc. And also celebrates with you - your expectations for your new baby, praying for your baby, uplifting experiences during your pregnancy, names for baby, etc
For me, this daily devotional really journeys with me during my pregnancy.
Pros:
+ Has great spiritual substance in its content (christian)
+ Has daily devotionals and prayers that are well written for each day of your pregnancy
+ Identifies with what a pregnant mother may be going through, thinking of or feeling - and speaks faith into you
+ I like journalling, and I found the journalling sections gave me some great questions to reflect, pray and thank God about.
Cons:
+ The presentation is not 'pretty' like some other devotionals
+ Larger size than most devotionals
+ If you are looking for devotionals with sweet/feel-good stories, then this is not the right devotional for you.

Motherprayer: A Pregnant Woman's Spiritual Companion Review

When I was pregnant with my daughter I searched for resources for Jewish women facing fertility issues or pregnancy and was thrilled to find Dr. Frymer-Kensky's book. I have admired her scholarship and breath of knowledge for many years and loved this ability to have it in a form that helped me celebrate my process of being pregnant and of delivering. Rabbi Amy Bernstein

Motherprayer: A Pregnant Woman's Spiritual Companion Overview

A comforting spiritual companion for the pregnant woman, this book approaches the many experiences of pregnancy with wisdom and humour. It gives words taken from the religious traditions in the ancient Near East and the Judeo-Christian present, to the longings, fears and the thrill of pregnancy.

The Duggars: 20 and Counting: Raising One of America's Largest Families--How they Do It Review

I had my library order this book for me for their collection, and it arrived early (hence the review before publication date). I read the book in a few hours today. It is quite an interesting read with lots of information that has never been included in their television specials. The Duggars write about their political run, child rearing philosphies, daily schedule, organizing and chore methods, their businesses (past and present), and many more topics.
There are many recipes and pictures with captions (some from before they had any kids) scattered throughout the book. Most of the recipes are available on their family website, though. The Duggars even included a floor plan of their home which cleared up some confusion for me as to where things were located after watching their tv shows.
I was surprised to read that even though their home was professionally decorated by Discovery Health/TLC, there were a couple of things not included/completed in their home their first year that many of us would not want to live without in our own homes. They had to save up to afford them. I think some of us probably get the wrong impression from their shows that they have a lot of money in the bank. After reading the book I believe that they really are frugal and need to be to provide for their family.
I wish the book had included more information on how they really live frugally today. Possibly some information on the menus they follow to budget food expenses or more overall budget/expense information on how they truly afford 17+ kids, would have made an interesting addition. Also, there is only a little tidbit about the girls' "dress code". I wish they had included more information about how they came to decide on it and when they started the modest dress code.
It was overall an interesting read and gave me a more complete understanding of this large God fearing family.

They'll discover how the Duggars manage to educate all their children at home, while providing experiences that go beyond the family walls, through vacations and educational trips. And they'll see how the Duggar family manages their finances and lives debt-free—even when they built their own 7,000-square-foot house.Answering the oft asked question—How can I do with one or two children what you do with seventeen(soon to be eighteen)?—Jim Bob and Michelle reveal how they create a warm and welcoming home filled with what Michelle calls "serene chaos." What Was Lost: A Christian Journey Through Miscarriage Review

I miscarried a baby this fall. It was almost surreal - the experience was so much like Elise's first pregnancy. He was a little surprise due to some nfp miscalculations, but entirely beloved during his short eight weeks of life. I was devastated when was gone. In the past six months, I think I've looked for everything the internet and the Bible have to offer. I told my husband I was going to find the comfort and answers I needed, and that I might have to write my own book if I didn't find something excellent soon. Now I found what I was looking for. Elise discusses miscarriage and pregnancy loss with grace, strength and honesty. She does not shy away from the difficult questions like "Where was God when my baby died? Why did He make my baby and then allow it to die? Why did I lose my baby when others are born to moms who abuse them?", sharing her insights with compassion and encouragement. There is no "snapping out" of the grief of miscarriage, but Elise proposes that the same God who brings redemption out of a crucifixion can create beauty springing up out of the ashes of our mourning. This is the reminder I continually need in the waves of grief.
This book would be excellent for a grieving mom from any Christian tradition, especially if she has an academic or intellectual bent. I am very grateful for this book and I hope many women are able to appreciate it as well.

What Was Lost: A Christian Journey Through Miscarriage Overview

United Methodist pastor Elise Erikson Barrett draws on her own painful experiences, as well as on interviews with others who have gone through the devastation of miscarriage, in an effort to help women grieve and, in time, to think theologically about pregnancy loss. Barrett also offers some much-needed practical advice about breaking the news to others, coping with insensitive comments, and grieving what is often a private loss, unmarked by the world.

Baby Changes Everything: Embracing and Preparing for Motherhood after 35 Review

As I read the introduction, with its bible reference and multiple mentions of God and prayer, I found myself looking again at the cover and title to see if I had missed something that would have told me this was a Christian book. I did not. That left me feeling duped, in a way. While the author goes "light" on her own references to God, church, prayer and "ministry," they ARE in the text, which to me personally was a turn off. Had I known this was the writer's perspective, I must admit I would not have bought this book. There were other subtle aspects of the text that, I felt, were influenced by a Christian perspective, such as multiple personal stories and examples of mothers who chose not to have prenatal testing because they would "accept the baby no matter what" and at least two who had babies with Down's Syndrome and viewed them as gifts that were supposed to happen. Now, I don't have a problem with that, but I do have a slight problem with those being the ONLY examples provided. There are many over 35 moms whose personal values and positions do not reflect this - had the book been obviously labeled as Christian in its perspective, it would be more legitimate for it to present only one perspective.
The other complaint I have about this book is that the author spends way too much time talking about her personal situation and family. Makes for a somewhat interesting read, but feels more like a memoir at times than a universally applicable book that focuses on general issues of older motherhood in a conceptual sense which is what I was looking for.
Overall, this was not the book I was expecting or hoping to read. I'll keep looking!

The Trinitarian Theology of St Thomas Aquinas Review

Emery's masterful synthesis of Aquinas's systematic works with his scripture commentaries shows the richness of Aquinas's Trinitarian theology. This is the new gold standard for understanding St. Thomas on the Trinity, and it is written at a level that makes it accessible even for beginning students of theology. A must-read for anyone interested in classical Trinitarian theology.

The Trinitarian Theology of St Thomas Aquinas Overview

A historical and systematic introduction to what the medieval philospher and theologian Thomas Aquinas (1225-74) said about faith in the Trinity. Gilles Emery OP provides an explanation of the main questions in Thomas's treatise on the Trinity in his major work, the Summa Theologiae. His presentation clarifies the keyideas through which Thomas accounts for the nature of Trinitarian monotheism.Emery focuses on the personal relations of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, both in their eternal communion and in their creative and saving action.By highlighting the thought of one of the greatest defenders of the doctrine of the Trinity, he enables people to grasp the classical Christian understanding of God.

Christian Family Guide To Pregnancy And Childbirth Review

I am a Christian and believe in natural childbirth - however, with my first baby had to be delivered c-section and now 2 additional C-sections later, referenced your book and found little to no info on the topic.
Failure to address the fact that unless you are okay with NOT giving birth in a hospital, mothers have no choice. I don't think the book will be republished, but if you write another please give more attention on this topic. Like it or not, c-sections are pretty common and not by choice but a matter of our healthcare and hospital systems and policies. Thank you!

I read and reread this book every night to calm my soul while pregnant and even afterwards to remind me that my children are gifts from God.
I intend to give this book as a "congratulions on your pregnancy" gift to all my expecting friends and family. I think you'll enjoy it too.

The Christian Mama's Guide to Having a Baby: Everything You Need to Know to Survive (and Love) Your Pregnancy Review

You've seen them, those chatty `girlfriends-guide-to-having-a-baby' type books. But you've wondered - are these books going to be unnecessarily crude? Raunchy? Worse? Well, Erin MacPherson has written a similarly light-hearted guide to pregnancy entitled The Christian Mama's Guide to Having a Baby.
Laugh-out-loud funny, MacPherson tackles the nitty-gritties of pregnancy in chronological order while providing the much-needed levity every pregnant mama needs to hang in there! Bonus sections include thoughts and advice to husbands from husbands who've been there (I loved this part!) Like many Guideposts titles, the faith emphasis isn't particularly strong in this title, but the author does acknowledge the difficulties pregnant moms face maintaining a godly attitude. She often directs moms towards their Creator as a source of support during the difficulties pregnancy can bring.
I enjoyed the fact that MacPherson does attempt to include some coverage of alternative caregivers such as midwives, birthing locations such as birth centers etc. although she hasn't personally experienced them. Having given birth at home four times I found her take on the medical aspects of pre-natal care and delivery to be fairly traditional and at times unfairly skewed in favor of medicated hospital births (she warns about the risks of preventable injuries that have occurred in home births, but what of all the common, preventable negative outcomes so common in hospital births?)
I'll admit, I'm a rabid natural-birther, so it's hard to please me on that front; I do suggest moms-to-be do some intensive research on the consequences and risks of common interventions (such as epidurals) before plunging into one. Complications following an epidural can too often lead to a c-section. Whew, okay, rant over! In all honesty, the author does a better job of presenting alternatives than most do.
That being said; there's few other times in your life that you'll need to be able to laugh at yourself than when you are pregnant. Not only does MacPherson provide those much-needed chuckles, but she also provides REALISTIC advice about how much baby gear you should actually buy, some tips on avoiding nausea (though she freely admits it may be likely that you CAN'T), and lots of other down-to-earth advice from the trenches.

The Christian Mama's Guide to Having a Baby: Everything You Need to Know to Survive (and Love) Your Pregnancy Overview

Filled with helpful tips, amusing anecdotes, and encouraging advice, here's one Christian mama's take on everything pregnancy -- from stretch marks to weight gain to figuring out how to rely on Christ through all of the uncertainty and joy of the next nine months.Pregnant women may discover that while they are thrilled about the baby, pregnancy can be another thing entirely. Instead of glowing they're glistening. There's morning sickness. And suddenly a favorite pair of jeans no longer fits. Erin MacPherson has created a comprehensive guide that's packed with information that every newly pregnant Christian mama needs including exercising while pregnant, a detailed guide to each trimester (including sleep, doctor check-ups, pregnancy sex), how to use your Bible as your pregnancy resource, and how to use this time of waiting to really draw closer to God through prayer.Filled with helpful tips (how do you quell that not-just-in-the-morning sickness?), humorous accounts (doesn't everyone crave peanut-butter-and-olive sandwiches?), and supportive spiritual advice (what does a godly pregnancy attitude actually look like anyway?). The Christian Mama's Guide to Having a Baby has the advice a mama-to-be wants to hear. Erin MacPherson assures, 'at the end of nine months, you really will be glowing.'

The Pregnancy Companion: A Faith Filled Guide for Your Journey to Motherhood Review

Even though I am not currently pregnant (or planning to be since my two boys are keeping me plenty busy!) I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is such a wonderfully balanced perspective of the joys and fears that one experiences during pregnancy.
Both authors are very candid about their own journeys to motherhood, including miscarriage, infertility and adoption. I loved that I was hearing from "real women" who had been through this and weren't afraid to share their stories.
The book is divided into chapters that deal with each month of pregnancy. There is a section written by Dr. Rupe that concerns the physical aspects of one's pregnancy and that is followed by some practical information and advice for your emotional wellbeing from Jessica Wolstenholm.
Just about every concern is addressed in some form or fashion as well as just plain helpful advice like where to get the best deal on baby items. I loved how thorough it was without being completely overwhelming.
I appreciated their approach to sharing their faith throughout the book. It was very encouraging without being religious or "preachy". I would feel comfortable handing this book to any of my friends and acquaintances and highly recommend it for those of you who are thinking about entering this stage of life!

The Pregnancy Companion: A Faith Filled Guide for Your Journey to Motherhood Overview

A doctor's counsel and a girlfriend's wisdom combine to create an information-packed, inspiration-filled resource for the physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of pregnancy. Halfway through her own pregnancy, author Jessica Wolstenholm realized that although she rushed to every book sitting on her bookshelf each time she encountered a question or a scary symptom, she found that the information there, while accurate, usually led to further questions or deeper fear, without the comfort she needed. ''If you are experiencing cramping,'' the book would explain, ''it is very normal. However, you could be experiencing a miscarriage so consult your physician.'' Fortunately for Jessica, she had the benefit of Dr. Heather Rupe, a Christian OB who answered every question with utmost honesty and accuracy, yet always included assurance that God was involved in every moment. Not all women have the benefit of a Christian OB, but they can have the next best thing in The Pregnancy Companion. This valuable book contains the same quality medical information as any ''expecting'' book on the market, infused with thought-provoking and spiritual messages. Organized in chapters that follow an expectant mother's OB appointment schedule, this unique resource will equip them for a faith-filled journey through an informed and joyful pregnancy.

Anything but Normal: A Novel Review

Though memories of a summer fling are still fresh and painful, Sophie is cautiously optimistic about this school year - after all, she's got a good group of friends and a cool job on the school newspaper. But Sophie's heart may not be the only thing that still remembers the events of last summer. . .
WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS
As a big fan of Melody Carlson, I was extremely interested in her take on teen pregnancy, so I began this book with high expectations. And I wasn't disappointed. . . at first.
One of Melody Carlson's greatest strengths lies in getting readers to understand and care about her characters, and Anything But Normal is no exception. In Sophie, Carlson creates a likable, "everygirl" sort of protagonist, and her intimate style makes Sophie very easy to relate to. Though I've never been in Sophie's exact circumstances, these circumstances are presented in a way that the reader can instantly sympathize with her fear and confusion. I felt like I was going through home pregnancy tests and morning sickness with her.
Without condoning abortion or presenting it as a viable option, Carlson also believably shows the kind of desperation that would prompt a girl to even consider such a thing - even a girl like Sophie, who had always thought of herself as a good, pro-life Christian. A scene where Sophie travels to the Women's Clinic to "weigh her options" will likely make readers stop and truly *think* about what they would do in her shoes. That's the effect it had on me, at least.
Carlson's compassion for pregnant teenagers shines through on every page. Presenting a wide variety of scenarios that could get a girl into the situation she finds herself in, she compellingly argues that one mistake shouldn't define who these girls are. A great point, however. . .
She also seems to argue that it *should* define who the guys are. Young fathers are offered none of the compassion and grace Carlson extends to young mothers, and I'd go as far as to say the novel thoroughly vilifies them. While the pregnant girls in this book are mostly nice gals who made one wrong choice, every single guy responsible for their pregnancy is presented as a selfish, heartless user who wouldn't know what right and wrong were if they bit him on the leg.
This isn't entirely Carlson's fault. It's a common stereotype, and for good reason - guys in that position who will stand up and at least try to do the right thing are, sadly, in the minority. However, in Carlson's writing, such guys aren't in the minority. They simply don't exist, despite the many different scenarios of teenage pregnancies she presents.
Unlike other reviewers, I didn't think Dylan came across as a terrible person. For the majority of the book, he seemed more like a confused teenager whose hormones had simply gotten the better of him and who had little more idea about what to do now than Sophie did. This, along with their pastor's fair, rational handling of the situation, led me to hope that perhaps *their* situation would bring some much-needed balance to the book's conclusion. However, a last-minute plot twist completely obliterates that possibility and left this reader shaking her head in disbelief.
Sophie, for her part, goes from constantly beating herself up for her mistake to taking practically no responsibility. Neither stance is very desirable, but the book would have us believe that Sophie is right on in her climatic "apology," which winds up amounting to little more than, "I'm sorry I ever met Dylan. I'm sorry I trusted Dylan. I'm sorry Dylan caused me to sin."
Furthermore, the aforementioned powerful scene at the Women's Clinic is marred slightly when Sophie briefly muses over the fact that she can get an abortion without her parent's permission, when at school she can't even take an aspirin without her parents being notified. Though she makes a good point, the way it was integrated into the narrative was jarring - for a moment, I felt like I was reading a pro-life pamphlet rather a novel.
Finally, the last chapter moves way too fast. Sophie deals with her friends' reactions to her pregnancy, rushes to the hospital with contractions, gives birth, and gives her baby up for adoption - all in about twenty-five pages. I honestly don't know if I caught the baby's name before the book abruptly concluded with a final, feeble "Sophie knew she would never be the same after all she'd been through and all she'd learned" or something similar. It doesn't even bother to mention exactly *what* Sophie had learned, because, frankly, it didn't feel like they we were leaving her in a very spiritually healthy place. The empathy I had felt toward her had waned considerably by that point.
There are much worse YA novels out there today, but there are also much better ones, even if you limit yourself to Carlson's works ("Burnt Orange" is highly recommended). Those searching for a Christian perspective on teenage pregnancy would probably be better served by the Nikki Sheridan series by Shirley Brinkerhoff. Though long out of print, you can likely find them at a public library, and they provide a much more detailed, balanced view of the subject.

Anything but Normal: A Novel Overview

Sophie is starting a new school year. Shopping for it with her best friend should be fun, but nothing seems to fit, which is a major issue to a high school girl. But her biggest problem is the secret she's keeping. And she's about to find out that she won't be able to keep things under wraps for much longer. This page-turning novel explores the tangled web of choices, secrets, and love that all teen girls navigate. Melody Carlson enjoys a huge audience of teen readers. Now, Revell presents another new stunning story from an author who understands teen girls right where they are.

Stretch Marks: A Novel Review

I've been a fan of Kimberly Stuart's mom-lit ever since I read BALANCING ACT and BOTTOM LINE. This author never fails to keep me thoroughly hooked and entertained. At first I assumed that STRETCH MARKS would be book #3 in the Heidi Elliot series, so it took me a few pages to get accustomed to Mia, a hip urban social worker who unexpectedly finds out she's pregnant from her live-in boyfriend.
Throughout the book, I was drawn to Mia, especially her courage in the face of numerous trying circumstances. She's alone after her boyfriend skips town, yet she finds companionship through her quirky best friend Frankie and her hilarious mom, Babs. There were so many laugh-out-loud scenes with Babs and Mia, such as when Babs joins Mia's yoga class for the first time.
I think this would make a great gift for moms-to-be, who can relate to Mia's ups and downs throughout her pregnancy. I also enjoyed reading through the point of view of a vegetarian since I have many family members who are vegetarian! I found myself wanting to eat healthier and try a little yoga after seeing how Mia controlled her own stress through her healthy lifestyle.
I'd highly recommend any of Kimberly Stuart's books for moms who want something fun to read while taking a break from the kids!

Stretch Marks: A Novel Overview

An earth-conscious, yoga-practicing twenty-something is forced to face her estranged relationship with her mother in this comic yet poignant novel about moms and daughters.

Mia Rathbun is an overworked and underpaid Chicago social worker who belongs to PETA and recycles the tops of pizza boxes. Her boyfriend, Lars, is a free-spirited freelance writer (read: mooch) who disdains the conventions of marriage but is happy to build a life with Mia. That is until Mia becomes pregnant.

Left on her own, Mia just begins to accustom herself to the looming prospect of single parenthood when her mother, Babs, shows up to "help." The two have an estranged relationship but are forced to acknowledge their connection as Mia's belly grows and she has few other options. The story is told with Stuart's characteristic irreverent and authentic humor with healthy doses of poignancy and grace.
