In Her Own Sweet Time: Unexpected Adventures in Finding Love, Commitment, and Motherhood Review

Rachel Lehmann-Haupt's "In Her Own Sweet Time" is an engrossing and poignant account of the problems facing affluent single women over thirty who have yet to find "Mr. Right." One of their worries is the possibility that they may never experience the joy of having a child. Lehmann-Haupt, who had spent her twenties seeing the world, becoming a writer, and casually dating, ruefully admits, "Suddenly I felt bad about all my career ambition and the emotional and financial independence that I had achieved." Had she been too cavalier in ignoring the ticking of her biological clock? Rachel interviews other women in similar circumstances as well as medical professionals who are on the cutting edge of reproductive technology. What are the choices facing older women who would like a baby but do not have a mate? How has extending a woman's reproductive years become a multi-million dollar business? Some of the answers are surprising and a bit unnerving for those who believe in the traditional nuclear family.
In some ways, biology is destiny. "As a woman ages, her egg quality declines and pregnancy becomes both riskier and harder to achieve." As young women increasingly enter lucrative professions for economic, emotional, and intellectual reasons, many "have therefore put earning power before procreative power." Increasingly, women want to start a family in their late thirties or even in their forties, with or without a husband. As Lehmann-Haupt struggles with similar issues, she opens a window on a controversial subject that is also an ethical minefield.
"In Her Own Sweet Time" is a compulsively readable and fiercely honest account of the author's emotional ups and downs. Women will gnash their teeth when Rachel tells us about men she loved and who claimed they loved her in return, but for some inexplicable reason, could not commit to marriage and a family. On the other hand, she may have broken up with potential life partners because they didn't measure up to her ideal of perfection and/or she was so intent on pursuing her personal goals. As she looks at the big picture, Lehmann-Haupt raises some thorny issues: Should every woman aspire to be a mother? How much money should a woman spend and how much stress should she put herself through to undergo fertility treatments that may not work? Is it morally right for a woman to become pregnant using donor sperm, knowing that she is depriving her future child of a father with whom he can bond? Should a woman freeze her eggs while they are still viable for use at some future time? There are no easy answers; sometimes, it seems, too much choice can be just as confusing and paralyzing as too little choice. It is ironic that our brave new world of liberated women, Internet dating, and reproductive breakthroughs has not necessarily made people's lives any easier or more satisfying.

Let's Panic About Babies: How to Endure and Possibly Triumph Over the Adorable Tyrant who Will Ruin Your Body, Destroy Your Life, Liquefy Your Brain, ... Turn You into a Worthwhile Human Being Review

I am a mother of two growing young men, and that has caused me to be crotchety toward the things that young people do. One thing that I am especially given to crotchets about is the use of the acronym LOL. I don't hate laughing, mind, and I certainly don't expect anyone to laugh silently. Laughing out loud is great! I just don't love LOL.
And yet, I have found myself LOLing every time I open this book. And everyone in my family is LOLing every time they open this book, including my 11-year-old and 8-year-old sons. Everyone where I work LOL'd when they stole it off my desk to read when they were supposed to be working and you should ask before you put your dirty paws all over someone else's brand new book, Megan!* My point is that, despite how much I hate LOL, I wouldn't be able to describe how much laughing out loud this book has been providing everyone around me without using that very shorthand. So, there you go.
Here's why I love it. A hundred years ago when I first saw that little blue line on that urine-soaked stick (which I then jumped around, waving in the air. Gross!) I ran right out and bought a certain book about what a woman should expect when she is expecting a certain thing. The certain thing is a baby. Well, I sat right down and devoured that book, and when I was through...I was afraid to move. Or eat. Or think too much. When I finally got over the trauma, I told my husband that vaunted tome should really be called, "1,000 Things to Be Paranoid About Over the Next Nine Months. HA HA, You Should See How Crazy Your Eyes Look Right Now!" I picked it up with a pair of tongs and tossed it in a box never to be seen again. Clearly, these two women understand the way I felt back then. They get me. They get you too. And this book is the answer to any pregnancy and parenthood guide out there that will try to convince you that you might have toxoplasmosis from a partial granule of cat litter that your husband tracked near you on the bottom of his shoe and which somehow got into your eye.
If you are looking to have a baby or you're looking to install a baby in someone, if you've recently had a baby or watched while the special lady in your life did all the work, this book is for you. I wish I'd had this before I got pregnant. I'm glad I have it now. And if you're currently pregnant, don't worry, this book will not cause you to laugh your fetus right out of you, because that's not scientifically possible. But you will probably tinkle your maternity pants. Which you're going to do anyway, so might as well have fun doing it!
*Her real name. And to be fair to Megan, she immediately ordered two copies of the book - one for herself and one for a shower gift - as soon as I pried her grubby mitts off of mine.

Let's Panic About Babies: How to Endure and Possibly Triumph Over the Adorable Tyrant who Will Ruin Your Body, Destroy Your Life, Liquefy Your Brain, ... Turn You into a Worthwhile Human Being Overview

BABIES. Maybe you're thinking of having one. There might even be one inside you right now, draining nutrients from your system via a tube growing from its midsection. Or maybe you've already got one around the house, somewhere, and you're responsible for its continued survival. You're saddled with a helpless being whom you've agreed to house and feed and love with all your heart for the rest of your life, more or less. Either way, you're confused, you're frightened, and 911 won't take your calls anymore. But don't despair! Let's Panic About Babies! is here to hold your hand and answer some important, age-old baby-related questions, including:- How can I be sure I'm pregnant? (Torso swells gradually until baby falls into underpants.)- Did I just pee myself? (Yes.)- What happens if I have sex during my pregnancy? (Your baby will be born with a full, lush beard.)- How can I tell if I've chosen the wrong pediatrician? (He/she can't pronounce "stethoscope.") - How do I make sure my baby loves me back? (Voodoo.) From the moment they're created until the day they steal our cars, our babies demand center stage in our lives. So join Alice and Eden as they tell you (and your lucky partner!) exactly what to think and feel and do, from morning sickness to baby's first steps. They know everything!

My Miserable Lonely Lesbian Pregnancy Review

This book may have a rubber ducky on it and a baby born at the end of it, but beyond that, it has little to do with most parenting/pregnancy books, and the fact that Askowitz is single or a lesbian aren't, ultimately, what sets it apart so much as her outlook. She's supposed to be ecstatic; she split up with her long-term girlfriend and went through the rounds of picking out a sperm donor specifically so she could become the mom she's longed to be.
But she's not happy. At all. She misses her girlfriend fiercely, and is still dealing with the harrowing death of her lifelong friend. Both of these events, the breakup and the loss of her friend, form the backdrop to the growing life inside of her. Yet they don't stop Askowitz from being scathingly hilarious, sparing no one, including her siblings, parents, extended family, friends, exes, coworkers and Lesbian Camping. When talking about how her ex-girlfriend Kate gained 40 pounds while they were together, Askowitz doesn't hide her revulsion, and upon being asked "Would you want my body?" Askowitz replies "No, but it's perfect on you." Askowitz then wonders, "Why couldn't I have said nothing, or changed the subject?" It might be tough to take if your its recipient, but as a reader, Askowitz has taken her best moments and turned them into something that readers can laugh at.
Oh, and she also rightly calls Sex and the City on a particularly self-loathing moment, which Amazon probably won't let me repost (it has the "p" word in it). Prepare for a lot of profanity. Prepare to sometimes get sick of Askowitz's whining. Prepare to laugh uproariously at very simple but moments, like her reflections on one of her potential sperm donors: "5599's brother was diagnosed and treated for obsessive-compulsive disorder at 21. He wrote: `My brother's health is excellent. He's taking medication, and he's fine now.' His maternal grandmother drank herself to death at 45. He'd probably say she's fine now. He's out."
Sometimes it's hard to wonder just how those in her life put up with Askowitz's demands during her pregnancy, yet this is what makes powerful memoir: honesty. She doesn't sugarcoat her grouchiness or the intensity of labor. And perhaps the most vital story here isn't about Askowitz becoming a mother, but searching for acceptance from her family after feeling like the family freak after she came out as a teenager. The end is the tearjerker the rest of the book hasn't quite prepared you for, yet she still ends on a note so befitting this book, I'll just have to quote it: "Excuse me, Dana, that's my tit."
Askowtiz may have been miserable and lonely, but this book is full of humor, not the kind going for cheap easy laughs, but a very strongly Jewish, feminist, often righteous, lesbian brand of humor Askowitz was clearly born with. It's uncensored, full of dyke drama, told in sometimes brief diary snippets, with other asides into her childhood in Los Angeles. This memoir has roots, and will make you laugh as well as cry as it goes from childhood to death to birth and circles through the three. I'm glad Askowitz didn't try to soften any of her edges, because her sadness, flashes of anger, moments of self-pity and doubt coincide perfectly with her humor and faith in the future and her child. And you so don't need to be a lesbian or pregnant to enjoy it (though I'd imagine being either will make it an even better read).

My Miserable Lonely Lesbian Pregnancy Overview

In this memoir of her 40 weeks and five days in hell, Andrea Askowitz takes an unflinching look at her pregnant life from struggling with hormones to poor body image to a self imposed exile from family to take us on a ride through the turbulence of single lesbian motherhood. Along the way we meet her liberal parents as they struggle with their daughter's choices, the lover she longs to reconnect with who goes M.I.A. before the pregnancy, the friends who turn out to be no help at all and strangers who offer up some unlikely kindness. Andrea presents herself real, raw, impossibly cranky yet deeply touching with her self-deprecating dark sense of humor that will make you wince or better yet send you into uncontrollable fits of laughter

Hello, My Name Is Mommy: The Dysfunctional Girl's Guide to Having, Loving (and Hopefully Not Screwing Up) a Baby Review

I used to be a listener of Bob and Sheri when I lived in South Carolina. In 2001, I moved to Rhode Island and it was bye-bye Bob and Sheri. Oh how I miss listening to them in the mornings. I was so excited to learn that Sheri wrote a book. It lived up to every expectation. I just got it in the mail yesterday and I can't put it down. It is blunt, humorous and gives practical advice. A must have book for couples who want to have kids. Thank you Sheri, and what can I do to get a RI station to play your show in the morning??????????

Hello, My Name Is Mommy: The Dysfunctional Girl's Guide to Having, Loving (and Hopefully Not Screwing Up) a Baby Overview

Hilarious and true and inspirational, Hello, My Name is Mommy is for every pregnant woman and new mother who ever felt helpless and out of control instead of confident and aglow.Sure, women know pregnancy is no bed of roses, but Lynch taps into her own dysfunctional childhood and fears about becoming a mom to label a much profounder worry many moms-to-be have: that their own pasts were so screwed up that they're doomed to repeat the cycle.Dr. Spock may tell moms to trust their instincts, but Lynch's Misfit Mommies want to do every last thing but that. They feel like frauds and imposters, and Lynch's real-girl's voice will be instantly recognizable to them.Lynch will walk and talk new moms through it all: from lamenting the hot dogs and second-hand smoke they were raised on (and, of course, "you turned out just fine") to the realization that kids are kind of germy and gross (but feeling that way doesn't make one a bad mother) to keeping it together at work with Cheerios in the old nursing bra.

A Deeper Shade of Blue: A Woman's Guide to Recognizing and Treating Depression in Her Childbearing Years Review

Ruta Nonacs offers a wonderful guide to the sometimes rocky road to becoming a mother. Her book is a practical guide to navigating the emotional ups and downs of infertility, miscarriage, pregnancy, and postpartum.
No one tells you how hard it can be -- I'm a naturally cheerful person who was laid low by an entirely unexpected depression after my first child was born. No one who knew me predicted this. And I was very slow to get help. I wish this book had been available then.
Luckily, I live in Boston and found Dr. Nonacs, who worked with me to get through the blues -- she is an incredibily empathetic care giver. She's also a terrific writer. And she has little kids herself, so she can bring a wide perspective to her work --- as a doctor, a shrink, and a mom.
If you or a woman you care about is suffering with depression, moodiness, a difficult transition to motherhood, or postpartum stress, buy this book. You can read it straight through, or dip into the sections that best apply to your situation. There's also an extensive bibliography/resource section in the back.
I can heartily recommend this book for all new mothers. Her advice on taking care of yourself when you most need to applies to all mothers, not just those with an extra dose of the blues.

A Deeper Shade of Blue: A Woman's Guide to Recognizing and Treating Depression in Her Childbearing Years Overview

Depression affects women almost twice as often as men, with about one in four women suffering from it at some point in her lifetime. While depression may strike at any time, studies show that women appear to be particularly vulnerable during their childbearing years. This comprehensive and empathetic book confronts the seldom-talked-about issue of pregnancy-related depression, identifying symptoms, treatments, and cures for this constellation of serious, underdiagnosed, and surprisingly common emotional conditions. Topics covered include the emotional repercussions of infertility and miscarriage, depression during pregnancy, postpartum depression and anxiety, and the impact of maternal depression on spouse and family. Also addressed are the many aspects of a woman's life -- career, education, marriage, and a host of other factors -- that may increase her stress during the span of her childbearing years and make her especially susceptible to emotional difficulties. Straightforward, honest, and sensitive, A Deeper Shade of Blue speaks directly to women at risk of or suffering from depression within the context of childbearing and provides the information they need to get the best care, during pregnancy and beyond.

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy Review

"The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy" is a difficult book to rate. Vicki Iovine's honesty and sense of humor about pregnancy deserves 5 stars. If you find pregnancy difficult for even a moment, this book will be a great comfort to you. It is a delightful antidote to the dry, frightening pregnancy books that flood the market.
But I found myself angry with a couple of the positions Vicki takes and how she presents them, especially regarding natural childbirth. This is why I knocked my rating down to 3 stars. She seems to take it quite personally that some women make birth choices different from her own, and she goes out of her way to be quite rude and petty about it.
The Good Stuff
* Vicki Iovine really and truly understands how traumatic pregnancy weight gain can be. We live in a society where we are taught to hate and fear getting fat, and we cannot just turn that lesson off when we get pregnant. It is HARD to go to the doctor and get weighed all the time, and be judged on if our gain is "acceptable" or not. Vicki gets this, she genuinely does, and it is such a joy to read her rants about it. You're not alone in being scared to step on the scale.
* The Guide includes a realistic, down-to-Earth discussion of what you really need to buy for your new baby, and what you can skip. A huge blessing for new moms!
* Much of Vicki's advice is wonderfully specific. For instance, she doesn't just tell you that you need to bring an outfit to the hospital for the baby to wear home - she tells you exactly what kind of outfit will work the best. She does honestly seem to remember what it's like to be a first-time mom and just not know these things.
* Vicki points out her own way of doing things, but she often describes the different choices her own girlfriends made. It is helpful to have realistic options and know that one way doesn't always work for everybody.
The Bad Stuff
* This book is downright hostile toward mothers who do not have epidurals. Vicki actively discourages women from considering unmedicated birth. She tells her readers that no matter how they feel about epidurals before they go into labor, they will ALL want one as soon as they get to the hospital, anyway, so they should just get used to the idea of having one. She also makes the highly unlikely claim that, even though she seems to have an endless list of girlfriends, she doesn't know a single woman who refused an epidural (except for medical reasons). She stoops so low as to claim that women who birth naturally have uglier faces after delivery. I don't know why she is so aggressive about this, but it is really off-putting. Even if you're not considering natural childbirth yourself, her tone is just downright catty and mean.
* Similarly, she chastises women who are disappointed to end up with c-sections. While she is totally supportive of a mother's turbulent emotions in just about everything else, she states that regretting a c-section is a sign of "self-centeredness." Even though she admits that a few of her girlfriends struggle with this problem. She suddently becomes very cold and uncaring when she covers this topic. Again, she seems to take it personally that some women regret c-sections, simply because she had one. I wish she could be a little more objective.
* Vicki contradicts herself frequently. She is happy to encourage women to embrace the natural process when it comes to weight gain, for instance. But she has no use for the natural process when it comes to birth - she thinks everyone should induce labor at a convenient moment.
* She is sympathetic and understanding about weight gain, but admits that she started out, pre-pregnancy, a size 4. Her definition of getting "big" is pushing a size 10. Most women can't relate to that.
* Vicki does actually suggest that if you don't have sex with your husband during pregnancy, he will get anxious and cheat on you. She has a very narrow and unfair opinion of men.
* She does not tell women not to exercise at all, but she does discourage *vigorous* exercise. This did not bother me. However, her approach did bother me. She goes to great lengths to tell you that if something goes wrong with the baby, and you have been exercising, you will blame yourself. This is true, but it's also true if you don't exercise at all. Mothers always blame themselves - if, God forbid, something happens to your baby and all you did was go to the grocery store that day, you will blame yourself for going to the store. A pregnant woman cannot insulate herself from guilt. Vicki seems to be aware of this, except when it comes to the things she takes personally. And exercise is one of those things. She is annoyed with women who try and "control" their pregnancies by exercising a lot. But she has no proof that this is actually a bad thing. It seems to bother her merely because it is not what she chose to do. Again, her tendency to be dismissive toward women who make other choices is very annoying.
* If you read the 1995 version of this book, the chapter on maternity clothing is hopelessly outdated. But this may be remedied in the second edition that is currently in the works.Overall, this book is refreshing, fun, and comforting. It will make you feel better about being pregnant. But take Vicki Iovine's rants about epidurals, exercise, and c-sections with a large grain of salt.

About What Was Lost: Twenty Writers on Miscarriage, Healing, and Hope Review

This anthology is a powerful read for all women, those who have experienced miscarriage themselves and for those who have not. It is a celebration of women, their strength, and their common experience. Having suffered two miscarriages myself, this was the first time I have read something that put so many of my feelings into words and validated them for me. In an experience that can often make you feel all too alone, this book can help you to realize that you are not. Thank you for writing so beautifully on such an important topic.

Pregnant Woman's Comort Book : A Self-Nurturing Guide to Your Emotional Well-Being During Pregnancy and Early Motherhood Review

This book was very helpful to me during and after my pregnancy. The book includes chapters on physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of pregnancy and helps you plan for the postpartum period. Louden offers practical suggestions (for instance, think of food in terms of colors and try to include every color each day) and ideas for you to explore about your ideal birth, what you will miss about your life before the baby, etc. There were many times when I was going through something and could find just the chapter to fit my situation (i.e. "I am a body without a brain"). And I was glad I went through the postpartum chapters before my daughter was born. During those first two insane months of motherhood, I could go back to my journaling based on those chapters and remind myself of the things that were important. Thanks to Jennifer's suggestions, I had even created lists of resources to turn to when things got tough.
One reviewer mentions the new-agey aspects of the book. I am also not particularly comfortable with that brand of spirituality, but I just ignored those parts, which only made a small portion of the book. The book is good enough that the parts I skipped didn't detract from its value to me.
Also, don't skip this book if you are adopting a baby. Although you may not relate to the chapters about the physical aspects of pregnancy, there are plenty of chapters that explore your feelings about motherhood, so this book will work for you.
I highly recommend this book to mothers-to-be of all types!

The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth (Revised) Review

I just don't understand all these reviews that says that Ms. Kitzinger hates men and doctors! I found nothing in her book hateful! She may be a tad pro-natural birth, but probably only because she had natural births herself. Honestly, I thought she was VERY unbiased. She presents all of your different options for location of birth, pain medication versus natural methods, waterbirth, etc., in a pretty neutral manner. And some of the things that she says about doctor's visits is VERY TRUE, such as the woman feeling like she's on the birth mill. I feel that way at regular doctor's appointments sometimes when I sit for 45 minutes and the doctor sees me for a hasty five minutes. Who doesn't feel like they are on a medical assembly line when this happens?
She also talks to you like you are a competent adult capable of making informed decisions instead of a drooling idiot, unlike SOME pregnancy and birth books (What to Expect When You're Expecting comes to mind.)
Oh, and by the way, for that reviewer down there who thinks that waterbirth is backwards and New-Agey and uncommon; I think you would be surprised to learn how many women from all walks of life are now choosing this method of birth. It's not just for hippies in tye-dyed clothing, like you seem to think it is. And it is very safe.
First-time mothers, if you want to know all your options and weigh the pros and cons of each choice you will have to make regarding pregnancy and birth, GET THIS BOOK. Also try Dr. Sears "The Birth Book". Pregnancy and birth are not diseases, and you ARE competent enough to make your own choices regarding them.
Enjoy your pregnancy and the birth of your baby!

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth Review

This is the best book I've ever seen in regards to condensing current research on childbirth into readable and understandable terms. The author gives clear and concise descriptions of various OB procedures and interventions that are easy to follow. She gives pros and cons of each [working within her own bias, which she does freely admit]. I think this would be an excellent book for any couple expecting an uncomplicated birth to read. This is information that every pregnant woman *should* have access to in order to make good decisions.
However, there is definitely an anti-OB bias [which the author admits] and this isn't a book designed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy about a hospital birth. Be aware of that going into this - the author raises very important but possibly disturbing points for those planning a hospital birth with an Obstetrician in attendance.
My only dissappointment with the book is that there was no chapter on assisted delivery [vacuum cap and forceps]. I would very much have liked to see a chapter on the pros and cons of these common procedures and their safety for mother and baby. There is only one page that has a small bit of information on this, but no extensive discussion or gathering of the research data available. It seems a glaring omission from an otherwise excellent and complete book.

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth Overview

The newest procedures. The latest information. The complete rundown on modern pregnancy and childbirth...for women who want the facts. Every intelligent, informed woman is used to gathering the most complete information she can get before making a decision. But when it comes to one of the most important decisions in her life--how she will give birth--it can be tough to get the complete picture, even from an obstetrician.Surprisingly, much of the latest research goes against common medical opinion. Certified Lamaze instructor and activist Henci Goer brings women the carefully researched facts they'll want to have. Based on the latest medical studies and literature, The Thinking Woman's Guide To A Better Birth offers clear, concise information on tests, procedures and treatments--and gives advice about:* cesareans * ultrasound * gestational diabetes * breech babies * inducing labor * IVs * electronic fetal monitoring * ruptured membranes * epidurals * episiotomies * vaginal birth after a cesarean * midwives and obstetricians * alternative birthing methods * choosing a birth location * drugs and delivery * elective induction * professional labor support * and much more * Author is a certified Lamaze instructor and doula who counsels women on their childbirth experiences * Author belongs to the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services * Drawn upon the most up-to-date medical literature and studies * Written in an accessible, understandable style, explaining technical medical terms * Gives advice to women who were dissatisfied with their first birth experience

The Single Woman's Guide to a Happy Pregnancy Review

So many people don't understand the dilemma of single pregnant women who want to keep our babies and become parents. We're always being told that our choices are wrong. We can't find a pregnancy book that doesn't mention the role of a child's father when having a father for our child is beyond our control, and if we go to pregnancy centers for help, it seems that we just have to examine and re-examine our views on reproductive rights again and again, only to be led down a line of thinking that we aren't doing the "right thing" unless we give our children up for adoption! Even books that claim to be feminist often have a subtle message of pity and too much discussion about abortion and too much mention of adoption as a possibility. Abortion is not the issue when you've already decided to have a baby, and adoption is not everybody's path. But this book is like having your own personal support group right in your own home. This book focuses mostly on your own happiness, and gives you real down-to-earth ways to keep yourself happy. It also helps you to prepare for the baby, but this author knows that the most important piece of baby gear is your own happiness and stability. She doesn't go on much about what you should do, but what has worked for her, understanding that we're all different. She encourages us to make our own educated decisions about personal things: naming the baby, whether to opt for a hospital birth or home birth, to exercise caution while we follow our own hearts and instincts. She talks about God, but it's in a loving and inclusive way rather than an "I know God better than you do" way. Finally, some respect! I guess the wait is over.

The Single Woman's Guide to a Happy Pregnancy Overview

When Mari Gallion, an unmarried tour guide in Alaska, discovered she was pregnant, she immediately made the decision to have the baby. What she never expected was the hypocrisy of the movement that condemns a woman's right to choose while witholding information that could empower single women who had chosen to continue with unplanned pregnancies. In response, Gallion set out to write a guide that offers unconditional assistance to the women who have chosen to take the unorthodox path of pregnancy without a partner. The Single Woman's Guide to a Happy Pregnancy is Gallion's gift to those women who find themselves pregnant and going it alone. It is a positive, affirming, and sometimes humorous how-to that covers all the bases: staying positive, getting organized, preventing depression, and finding the agencies that offer assistance. The author also gives valuable advice about living circumstances, money management, and even what mothers need to acquire before the baby comes. The Single Woman's Guide to a Happy Pregnancy is not a book about morning sickness and blotchy skin.Instead, it is about well-being, attaining power through knowledge, and planning ahead.

Stupid Things You Should Never Say to Pregnant Women: For the Dads-To-Be, Relatives, Friends, and Strangers in Their Lives Review

If you're looking for a fun gift to give an expecting couple, this is it. While this book, I believe, is not meant to be very serious, it really has some great points to make while taking a relaxed and funny approach. Everyone will laugh at the pictures and all the "stupid" things never to say to a pregnant woman.

Confessions of a New Mother: (A Short, Humorous, but Truthful Account of Being a First-Time Parent) Review

The book is a very exciting and an interesting book. I don't like to read, but this book got my attention. It's not an extremely long book which helps. It got my attention because I am a mother of 3 and I could relate to the stories that Jackie wrote. I even got my husband to read the book also. It was a book that neither one of us could put down until we finished it. We both laughed at the stories she wrote and both said yep that's happened because we both could relate to motherhood or parenting. I would love to read other books by Jackie Malena. Everyone should buy this book and read. GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nine Months & Counting: Bible Promises/Bright Ideas f/Pregnancy and After Review

I stumbled across this charming book while looking for some thoughtful and/or Biblical quotes for my daughter's baby album. What I found, along with lots of beautiful thoughts for her book, was a reassuring look at God's hand in the jouney of preganancy.
I read and reread this book every night to calm my soul while pregnant and even afterwards to remind me that my children are gifts from God.
I intend to give this book as a "congratulions on your pregnancy" gift to all my expecting friends and family. I think you'll enjoy it too.

Waiting: A Diary of Loss and Hope in Pregnancy Review

After losing my first pregnancy at 16 weeks I was hard pressed to find a book that really spoke to me in a way that helped me deal with the mixed feelings of grief, fear for any future pregnancies and guilt that I was experiencing. This book was recommended to me by a friend and I finally found in it the words that I could not find anywhere else. In places I broke down reading this book because Ms. Reich's feelings and thoughts were so similar to my own that I felt that she had climbed into my mind. For anyone who has lost a baby - particuarly anyone who has done so before ever having had a successful pregnancy (this was my first pregnancy) - this book is a quiet comfort telling you that you are not alone and that good things are still possible in the future. Knowing this, of course, is not a panacea to the overwhelming feelings that accompany the loss of a pregnancy, but it is a tremendous gift to believe that there may be light at the end of the tunnel. I plan to give a copy of this book to another friend who recently suffered a miscarriage. I hope to never have to buy another copy for anyone else, but I'll do so without hesitation if the sad need ever arises again.

Waiting: A Diary of Loss and Hope in Pregnancy Overview

Waiting is an honest, in-depth account of one woman's experiences of pregnancy and miscarriage. Author Ellen Judith Reich's journal, kept through her third pregnancy, reflects upon two previous miscarriages. She explores not only the terror that can accompany the prospect of becoming a mother, but the loss of innocence and fear of future loss that haunt any woman who has miscarried. Reich focuses on grief and hope and on learning to cope with change and loss of control. She has recorded her thoughts and expectations about motherhood, children, being in control, and being betrayed by her body. She reveals much by examining the vivid dreams she had during pregnancy and recounting conversations with family, friends, health care professionals, and other grieving parents. This poignant and personal book should be read by every woman contemplating motherhood, particularly career women who, having postponed childbearing to establish their careers, face a greater likelihood of miscarriage and/or infertility. And any woman who has already experienced miscarriage will come away from Waiting with a sense of renewed optimism and a feeling of not being so alone with her pain. This insightful book should also be required reading for obstetricians and family practitioners and their staffs and medical students who can glean an enormous amount of information about the emotional aspects of miscarriage and help them to better understand their patients'needs and concerns. Counselors and therapists will also benefit from reading this valuable book.
