Let's Panic About Babies: How to Endure and Possibly Triumph Over the Adorable Tyrant who Will Ruin Your Body, Destroy Your Life, Liquefy Your Brain, ... Turn You into a Worthwhile Human Being Review

I am a mother of two growing young men, and that has caused me to be crotchety toward the things that young people do. One thing that I am especially given to crotchets about is the use of the acronym LOL. I don't hate laughing, mind, and I certainly don't expect anyone to laugh silently. Laughing out loud is great! I just don't love LOL.
And yet, I have found myself LOLing every time I open this book. And everyone in my family is LOLing every time they open this book, including my 11-year-old and 8-year-old sons. Everyone where I work LOL'd when they stole it off my desk to read when they were supposed to be working and you should ask before you put your dirty paws all over someone else's brand new book, Megan!* My point is that, despite how much I hate LOL, I wouldn't be able to describe how much laughing out loud this book has been providing everyone around me without using that very shorthand. So, there you go.
Here's why I love it. A hundred years ago when I first saw that little blue line on that urine-soaked stick (which I then jumped around, waving in the air. Gross!) I ran right out and bought a certain book about what a woman should expect when she is expecting a certain thing. The certain thing is a baby. Well, I sat right down and devoured that book, and when I was through...I was afraid to move. Or eat. Or think too much. When I finally got over the trauma, I told my husband that vaunted tome should really be called, "1,000 Things to Be Paranoid About Over the Next Nine Months. HA HA, You Should See How Crazy Your Eyes Look Right Now!" I picked it up with a pair of tongs and tossed it in a box never to be seen again. Clearly, these two women understand the way I felt back then. They get me. They get you too. And this book is the answer to any pregnancy and parenthood guide out there that will try to convince you that you might have toxoplasmosis from a partial granule of cat litter that your husband tracked near you on the bottom of his shoe and which somehow got into your eye.
If you are looking to have a baby or you're looking to install a baby in someone, if you've recently had a baby or watched while the special lady in your life did all the work, this book is for you. I wish I'd had this before I got pregnant. I'm glad I have it now. And if you're currently pregnant, don't worry, this book will not cause you to laugh your fetus right out of you, because that's not scientifically possible. But you will probably tinkle your maternity pants. Which you're going to do anyway, so might as well have fun doing it!
*Her real name. And to be fair to Megan, she immediately ordered two copies of the book - one for herself and one for a shower gift - as soon as I pried her grubby mitts off of mine.

BABIES. Maybe you're thinking of having one. There might even be one inside you right now, draining nutrients from your system via a tube growing from its midsection. Or maybe you've already got one around the house, somewhere, and you're responsible for its continued survival. You're saddled with a helpless being whom you've agreed to house and feed and love with all your heart for the rest of your life, more or less. Either way, you're confused, you're frightened, and 911 won't take your calls anymore. But don't despair! Let's Panic About Babies! is here to hold your hand and answer some important, age-old baby-related questions, including:- How can I be sure I'm pregnant? (Torso swells gradually until baby falls into underpants.)- Did I just pee myself? (Yes.)- What happens if I have sex during my pregnancy? (Your baby will be born with a full, lush beard.)- How can I tell if I've chosen the wrong pediatrician? (He/she can't pronounce "stethoscope.") - How do I make sure my baby loves me back? (Voodoo.) From the moment they're created until the day they steal our cars, our babies demand center stage in our lives. So join Alice and Eden as they tell you (and your lucky partner!) exactly what to think and feel and do, from morning sickness to baby's first steps. They know everything!

Fearless Pregnancy: Wisom and Reassurance from a Doctor, a Midwife, and a Mom Review

When it comes to my wife and her health, the words "neurotic" and "obsessive" come to mind. She gets on WebMD every time she has so much as a sniffle, and has convinced herself that she has everything from cancer to SARS to a brain tumor.
My wife and I found out we were pregnant for the first time just a few days ago. So, as soon as we were prepared to deal with it, we headed to the bookstore and found this title. Within the first three chapters, the authors had addressed fears ranging from the biggest general health issues, to the tests which are available and why you may or may not want them (answering the question for her, "I'm 34 years old, why won't they give me an amniocentesis?"), to how to tell a close friend who has been trying (hard) to get pregnant for some time that this "just sorta happened" for us. It's like the authors were inside her head.
Every parent should be fully aware of the risks involved in pregnancy. Bad things do happen, and we all know someone (or know someone who knows someone) to whom the worst possible things have happened. But many of us need the encouragement of someone authoritative who can remind us that these things are rare exceptions, and that there are some things you can control and some things you can't. "Instead of obsessing about your pregnancy," the authors remind us, "consider obsessing over parenting. That situation lasts longer, and the payoff for being prepared will likely be greater."
Many of the critics of this book seem to be response to the premise of the title. Of course there is no such thing as a "fearless pregnancy" -- if one were to read as far as the first page of the book, one would find that the authors agree:
"The key is that the fear must be valid, and it must be used properly -- to inquire, explore, and act wisely."
By no means do I believe that this book is intended to be a comprehensive reference. Perhaps the book's subtitle more accurately reflects its content: "Wisdom and Reassurance From a Doctor, a Midwife and a Mom."
It's perfect for us because this is our first pregnancy, and it will not be the only pregnancy book on our shelves. It is true that this book does not address the devastating realities for those families who have experienced loss or complication (but by no means does it attempt to diminish or dismiss these experiences, either). If you have previously experienced a difficult pregnancy or loss, this book will most likely not address your fears about getting pregnant again.
Nonetheless, for anyone simply trying to get a grip on what can be one of the scariest things to happen to you for the first time, we highly recommend this book.

Diary of a Mad Mom-to-Be Review

Amy Thomas is back! This time she has taken it upon herself to obsess about her pregnancy. She goes through one misadventure after another as she realizes that her birth date's looming and she hasn't achieved the tasks at hand on her 63-item To Do List. To make matters worse, she's lost her job, owns a rather small apartment and her husband finds it difficult to deal with her neurotic manner. She begins to wonder whether having a child was a good idea after all...
This novel is hilarious! Amy's one of the most neurotic characters ever written. Just when I thought she couldn't be more insubordinate in Diary of a Mad Bride, her obsessive behavior reaches outrageous and laugh out loud proportions in the second novel. Laura Wolf is a great writer, not unlike Sophie Kinsella -- author of Confessions of a Shopaholic. Their writing styles are quite similar.
Diary of a Mad Mom-to-Be is a great summer reading investment. Highly recommended...

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy Review

"The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy" is a difficult book to rate. Vicki Iovine's honesty and sense of humor about pregnancy deserves 5 stars. If you find pregnancy difficult for even a moment, this book will be a great comfort to you. It is a delightful antidote to the dry, frightening pregnancy books that flood the market.
But I found myself angry with a couple of the positions Vicki takes and how she presents them, especially regarding natural childbirth. This is why I knocked my rating down to 3 stars. She seems to take it quite personally that some women make birth choices different from her own, and she goes out of her way to be quite rude and petty about it.
The Good Stuff
* Vicki Iovine really and truly understands how traumatic pregnancy weight gain can be. We live in a society where we are taught to hate and fear getting fat, and we cannot just turn that lesson off when we get pregnant. It is HARD to go to the doctor and get weighed all the time, and be judged on if our gain is "acceptable" or not. Vicki gets this, she genuinely does, and it is such a joy to read her rants about it. You're not alone in being scared to step on the scale.
* The Guide includes a realistic, down-to-Earth discussion of what you really need to buy for your new baby, and what you can skip. A huge blessing for new moms!
* Much of Vicki's advice is wonderfully specific. For instance, she doesn't just tell you that you need to bring an outfit to the hospital for the baby to wear home - she tells you exactly what kind of outfit will work the best. She does honestly seem to remember what it's like to be a first-time mom and just not know these things.
* Vicki points out her own way of doing things, but she often describes the different choices her own girlfriends made. It is helpful to have realistic options and know that one way doesn't always work for everybody.
The Bad Stuff
* This book is downright hostile toward mothers who do not have epidurals. Vicki actively discourages women from considering unmedicated birth. She tells her readers that no matter how they feel about epidurals before they go into labor, they will ALL want one as soon as they get to the hospital, anyway, so they should just get used to the idea of having one. She also makes the highly unlikely claim that, even though she seems to have an endless list of girlfriends, she doesn't know a single woman who refused an epidural (except for medical reasons). She stoops so low as to claim that women who birth naturally have uglier faces after delivery. I don't know why she is so aggressive about this, but it is really off-putting. Even if you're not considering natural childbirth yourself, her tone is just downright catty and mean.
* Similarly, she chastises women who are disappointed to end up with c-sections. While she is totally supportive of a mother's turbulent emotions in just about everything else, she states that regretting a c-section is a sign of "self-centeredness." Even though she admits that a few of her girlfriends struggle with this problem. She suddently becomes very cold and uncaring when she covers this topic. Again, she seems to take it personally that some women regret c-sections, simply because she had one. I wish she could be a little more objective.
* Vicki contradicts herself frequently. She is happy to encourage women to embrace the natural process when it comes to weight gain, for instance. But she has no use for the natural process when it comes to birth - she thinks everyone should induce labor at a convenient moment.
* She is sympathetic and understanding about weight gain, but admits that she started out, pre-pregnancy, a size 4. Her definition of getting "big" is pushing a size 10. Most women can't relate to that.
* Vicki does actually suggest that if you don't have sex with your husband during pregnancy, he will get anxious and cheat on you. She has a very narrow and unfair opinion of men.
* She does not tell women not to exercise at all, but she does discourage *vigorous* exercise. This did not bother me. However, her approach did bother me. She goes to great lengths to tell you that if something goes wrong with the baby, and you have been exercising, you will blame yourself. This is true, but it's also true if you don't exercise at all. Mothers always blame themselves - if, God forbid, something happens to your baby and all you did was go to the grocery store that day, you will blame yourself for going to the store. A pregnant woman cannot insulate herself from guilt. Vicki seems to be aware of this, except when it comes to the things she takes personally. And exercise is one of those things. She is annoyed with women who try and "control" their pregnancies by exercising a lot. But she has no proof that this is actually a bad thing. It seems to bother her merely because it is not what she chose to do. Again, her tendency to be dismissive toward women who make other choices is very annoying.
* If you read the 1995 version of this book, the chapter on maternity clothing is hopelessly outdated. But this may be remedied in the second edition that is currently in the works.Overall, this book is refreshing, fun, and comforting. It will make you feel better about being pregnant. But take Vicki Iovine's rants about epidurals, exercise, and c-sections with a large grain of salt.

Expect the Unexpected When You're Expecting Review

I read this book during my first pregnancy, and honestly, it was more helpful than all the medical guides. It got me to laugh at myself, the perfect de-stressor for the tense expectant mother. From descriptions of the various kinds of birth attendants (like the Old Geezer, who actively dislikes women and treats pregnancy as a disease) to exercises you can do (walk like an Egyptian, waddle like a duck...) to what you'll be looking like this month (stuck in the bathtub) it covers everything (except the medical.) Most expectant mothers with sense of humor will appreciate the authors' gentle poking-of-fun at pregnancy, a laughter that never turns mean or hurtful. The only thing I didn't really like were the tax tips.

Expect the Unexpected When You're Expecting Overview

An illustrated parody of the multimillion-copy-selling pregnancy primer What to Expect When You're Expecting, and the perfect gift for everyone who has had a baby, is having a baby, or is even thinking of having a baby.

You Know You're Pregnant When. Reflections on the Longest Nine Months of My Life Review

I laughed a ton from the very first page! It was a great book and very accurate descriptions of a womans feelings during the not so pleasant pregnancy side effects.

You Know You're Pregnant When. Reflections on the Longest Nine Months of My Life Overview

There is a lot of bellyaching that goes along with pregnancy. This book is no different. You Know You're Pregnant When. Pregnancy Sucks: What to do when your miracle makes you miserable Review

Author Joanne Kimes is not afraid to be blunt, and she has a sardonic wit that makes you realize that, yes, pregnancy can suck, but you will still be smiling. It seems that most women possess a convenient amnesia about their pregnancies. You will seldom get a straight answer about the discomfort of pregnancy from a woman who has a child over the age of two. The pregnancy has been forgotten by then, replaced by the child and its ensuing responsibilities. Little things like morning sickness, cramps, and constipation are left behind. But, when a woman is pregnant, and everyone is implying that she shouldn't be feeling as bad as she does, it tends to make a woman feel like she's over-reacting.
Well, Joanne Kimes doesn't think you're over-reacting. She shares the bad and the good of pregnancy, and lets you know it's perfectly alright to be uncomfortable, sick, and grumpy while pregnant. The joys will eventually outweigh the negative aspects, but you are given permission to complain. And, with the tongue-in-cheek wit of her writing, it's a true joy to read. I felt so much better after reading this book, because it's fine if your pregnancy sucks. We are not bad mothers or bad women, we're just facing the facts! I highly recommend this book to all pregnant women.

Pregnancy Sucks: What to do when your miracle makes you miserable Overview

That "glowing skin" everyone promised you looks remarkably similar to the hormonal acne you battled as a teenYour special bond with your husband? It means he can't sleep in the same room as you, thanks to your killer gasThe lady at the grocery store remarks "it must be any day now!" when you haven't finished your second trimesterYou debut the perfect name for your baby--which your mother-in-law immediately describes as "interesting" (complete with a wrinkled nose)There's no doubt about it: Pregnancy isn't all it's cracked up to be. In this complete update of the bestselling first edition, Joanne Kimes pairs no-holds-barred humor with helpful advice to get you through the next nine months with (some level of) your sanity intact. So whether you're looking for the scoop on hypnobirthing, you want to know a cure for your hemorrhoids, or you really just want a laugh (even if you might pee in your maternity leggings), this book will tell you exactly what to do when that miracle of yours is making you totally, completely, gestationally miserable.

The Hot Mom to Be Handbook: Look and Feel Great from Bump to Baby Review

This book is okay if you're in your twenties, fashion conscious, and a nervous, first time mom. However, as someone who's been a parent for almost a decade, is nearly 40, fashion conscious, and expecting again, I have one word for you: Resources!!!! I skimmed the 1st 114 pages that were useless to me; I don't care about Trista Sutter's birthing experience, I know how to handle the issues that seemed monumental the 1st time, but seem frivolous now, like how to handle unwanted advice, input, etc. I also think parts of the book are ridiculous, like ringing bells in your baby's room before decorating it, or, on p.105 it says that pregnancy makes you dumb, and to use it as an excuse. If you can get past the grammatical errors, and fluffy, well merchandised aspects of the book, you will find it has a plethora of outstanding resources. I could spend hours online, but all the work has been done for me. This time around, I'm confident in what I want, and really what I don't want/need. I refuse to let motherhood impinge my style or comfort, and this book has all the go-to websites for gorgeous nursing wear, and I haven't even made it through the dozens of decorating resources. I relish the idea of a new baby again, but I'm also excited to spend more money on myself this time on quality necessities that look beautiful, instead of a mountain of useless, expensive items the baby doesn't need.

The Hip Mama Survival Guide: Advice From the Trenches On: Pregnancy,Childbirth,Cool Names,Clueless Doctors,Potty Training,Toddler Review

After reading several pregnancy books that assumed I was living in the comfortable middle class with an eager & helpful dad-to-be and a desire to be the most Western mother on the planet, I found it really refreshing to read Ms Gore's survival guide. Her advice ranges from the Basic Layette (and I mean basic, for those of us on limited income) to How to Make a Quick $20 (garage sales, palm reading...). I knew, by the end of the book, that the author's trenches were not unlike my own.
Still, it left me hanging in a few areas--but that's where other books can help, as no pregnancy/childbirth book can cover it all. Her disclaimer in the introduction mentions just that: not wanting to duplicate what your everyday pregnancy book can cover, she addresses issues that the other books don't touch.
As part of a small pregnancy/childbirth library, this book is essential for single moms or those with alternative arrangements. On its own, it's great for support, and is somewhat practical. It made me want to subscribe to Ms Gore's Hip Mama magazine, just for the community of it.

The Hip Mama Survival Guide: Advice From the Trenches On: Pregnancy,Childbirth,Cool Names,Clueless Doctors,Potty Training,Toddler Overview

"The Gen-X Dr. Spock" and the founder of "Hip Mama: The Parenting 'Zine" gives readers advice from the trenches on pregnancy, childbirth, cool names, clueless doctors, potty training, domestic mayhem, right-wing losers, the evil patriarchy, nervous breakdowns, and way more. Line drawings.

The Newly Non-Drinking Girl's Guide to Pregnancy Review

I bought this book when I first found out I was pregnant. It was a funny read and has some interesting-sounding recipes. Some of them you would probably think of on your own, but others are more unusual or ways of making drinks that taste similar to the real deal (e.g., virgin Manhattan).
But, I didn't realize just how valuable it would be until last night, however. On a whim, I jammed the book into my purse as we left for dinner & jazz at a great restaurant. I ordered a virgin mai tai (it's a Chinese place), but when it arrived, could smell the rum. Unfortunately, the waiter didn't really speak much English, so he wasn't with me on the word "virgin" and "no alcohol" really didn't seem to take either. After a couple minutes (and sending back the first drink) I whipped out this book, turned to the recipe, and asked him to just give the recipe to the bartender. All was well thereafter!

The Newly Non-Drinking Girl's Guide to Pregnancy Overview

Hilarious-and sound-advice on surviving 40 weeks without a drop! When you find out you're pregnant, you've officially crossed the line from "Drinking for One" to "Eating for Two." Yes, the prospect of 40 long, long weeks without a single cocktail is enough to strike dread into the heart and fear into the belly of even the most moderate of drinkers. The Newly Non-Drinking Girl's Guide to Pregnancy is a hilarious and honest look at how to survive pregnancy without alcohol. From practical information on alcohol and pregnancy to fun advice on surviving birthdays, bachelorettes and barbecues sans cocktails and finding sobriety support at home, this is the perfect book for any party girl who finds herself pregnant.By including 50 fun recipes for mocktails to complete every month along the way, authors Jackie Rose and Dr. Caroline Angel give newly pregnant women insight into how to survive-if not thrive-while going the full 40 without alcohol.

100 Things I Hate about Pregnancy Review

I needed this kind of book while I was pregnant. I was tired of all the shiny, happy pregnancy books. It was realistic and sarcastic - totally my style. I would give as a gift to friends who appreciate that humor.

100 Things I Hate about Pregnancy Overview

What you'll detest when you're expecting. Are you pregnant and peevish?Between morning sickness, all those strangers who want to touch your belly and give you really good advice, deeper exhaustion than you've ever known, plus what passes for fashion in maternity underwear, no wonder your delicate condition is driving you crazy. Also includes some really good advice, factoids, and cool resources.

How to Make a Pregnant Woman Happy Review

The other reviewers (especially the first one) may have missed the point a little. This book is specifically written FOR DADS and (to be politically correct) "life-partners." It's NOT designed to be a "book for expectant mothers, but which dads-to-be might also enjoy." If there is a dad-to-be in the relationship who actually cares about the mother & child, HE should be the one reading this book. It's a great resource for helping us guys understand what's going on, as well as how to treat our wives/partners like queens. It doesn't pretend to tell us how to completely understand women; that's impossible, especially during pregnancy. It does, however, give advice on how to deal with things in a healthy, positive way.
I appreciate that there's a book like this that explains everything in layman's terms, but with enough depth to keep from insulting my intelligence. I didn't find it condescending at all. In fact, being a first-time dad-to-be, there were many aspects of the pregnancy that I was clueless about. And paternalistic? In my view, since the book was written for men, that's a good thing.

Best Friends' Guide to Pregnancy Review

I agree with another reviewer that this book could scare a first-time pregnant woman. I've been reading it lately as a second-time pregnant woman and it's hilarious and extremely true for me and my experiences. She maps out my first pregnancy "by the book". It's also a book I wish my husband would read. I think Vicki Iovine read my mind. It does at times present a negative view of pregnancy, but I have to say from my experience, it's a very realistic view. I try to think back to my first pregnancy and birth and wonder if this would have scared me...I think it would have, but I would have been a little more prepared for what would really happen to me! This time around, it has been very comforting to read that so many other women experienced the same things I did in pregnancy and birth. For some reason - I thought I was the only person in the world who ever went through this!!! If you're looking for an honest, realist view of what I'd call an "average pregnancy" - this is a wonderful read.

Best Friends' Guide to Pregnancy Overview

Your doctor gives you medical advice. Your mother buys you baby clothes. But who can give you the real story when you're pregnant? Your best friends of course - at least the ones who've been through the exhilaration and exhaustion, the agony and ecstasy of pregnancy. Now, four-time delivery-room veteran Vicki Iovine helps you through the next nine months the way only a best friend can. Here is straight talk about those little things that are too embarrassing to ask about, practical tips and hilarious tales on anything pregnant. From learning that you're expecting ('Oh my God, how do I get out of this?') to the day your newborn arrives ('You mean I have to take it home with me?'), Iovine gives you the low-down on: What really happens to your body - from morning sickness and wind to eating everything in sight; what to expect when going from being a babe to having one; common fears and paranoia - from turning into your mother to leaving the baby on the car roof; the many moods of pregnancy - or why you're so irritable/distracted/tired/lightheaded (well, more than you usually are); the pregnancy experts - from your mum to his mum, they think they know everything and they don't hesitate to tell you what you are doing wrong; how to have sex during pregnancy, should you so desire - bearing in mind you'll have no interest afterwards; looking and feeling your best - cautionary style tips from your best friend, who really would tell you if your perky new-mum haircut makes you look like a pinhead whale.

A Bun in the Oven: The Real Guide to Pregnancy Review

Definitely worth it. Funny, informative, and doesn't avoid what the real thing is like. And, rather than setting an impossible standard of 'what the perfect pregnant woman should do,' this book makes it seem like real people can be pregnant and get through it all. My friend loved it during her pregnancy, sent it to us, and now I'm sending it to all our friends.

A Bun in the Oven: The Real Guide to Pregnancy Overview

Dude, You're Gonna Be a Dad: How to Get (Both of You) Through the Next 9 Months Review

I got this title for my sone as he was about to have my first grandbaby. He learned a lot, but laughed while he was dong it. I recommend this for all fathers, not just "first timers". Lots of factual information coupled with a style that is easy to read.

Dude, You're Gonna Be a Dad: How to Get (Both of You) Through the Next 9 Months Overview

There are approximately 3,712 ways for a guy to look stupid during pregnancy--this book's here to help you avoid all (most) of them. And here's your first hint: Focus on what you can be doing for her rather than what's happening to her. She's pregnant. She knows that. You know that. And her 152 baby books tell her exactly what she can expect. Your job is to learn what you can do between the stick turning blue and the drive to the delivery room to make the next nine months go as smoothly as possible. That's where John Pfeiffer steps in. Like any good coach, he's been through it. He's dealt with the morning sickness and doctor visits, painting the baby's nursery and packing the overnight bag, choosing a name, hospital, and the color of the car-seat cover. All the while he remained positive and responsive--there with a "You're beautiful" when necessary--but assertive during the decision-making process. (He didn't want to wind up with a kid named Percy.) And now it's your turn. She might be having the baby, but you have plenty of responsibilities.
