Fearless Pregnancy: Wisom and Reassurance from a Doctor, a Midwife, and a Mom Review

When it comes to my wife and her health, the words "neurotic" and "obsessive" come to mind. She gets on WebMD every time she has so much as a sniffle, and has convinced herself that she has everything from cancer to SARS to a brain tumor.
My wife and I found out we were pregnant for the first time just a few days ago. So, as soon as we were prepared to deal with it, we headed to the bookstore and found this title. Within the first three chapters, the authors had addressed fears ranging from the biggest general health issues, to the tests which are available and why you may or may not want them (answering the question for her, "I'm 34 years old, why won't they give me an amniocentesis?"), to how to tell a close friend who has been trying (hard) to get pregnant for some time that this "just sorta happened" for us. It's like the authors were inside her head.
Every parent should be fully aware of the risks involved in pregnancy. Bad things do happen, and we all know someone (or know someone who knows someone) to whom the worst possible things have happened. But many of us need the encouragement of someone authoritative who can remind us that these things are rare exceptions, and that there are some things you can control and some things you can't. "Instead of obsessing about your pregnancy," the authors remind us, "consider obsessing over parenting. That situation lasts longer, and the payoff for being prepared will likely be greater."
Many of the critics of this book seem to be response to the premise of the title. Of course there is no such thing as a "fearless pregnancy" -- if one were to read as far as the first page of the book, one would find that the authors agree:
"The key is that the fear must be valid, and it must be used properly -- to inquire, explore, and act wisely."
By no means do I believe that this book is intended to be a comprehensive reference. Perhaps the book's subtitle more accurately reflects its content: "Wisdom and Reassurance From a Doctor, a Midwife and a Mom."
It's perfect for us because this is our first pregnancy, and it will not be the only pregnancy book on our shelves. It is true that this book does not address the devastating realities for those families who have experienced loss or complication (but by no means does it attempt to diminish or dismiss these experiences, either). If you have previously experienced a difficult pregnancy or loss, this book will most likely not address your fears about getting pregnant again.
Nonetheless, for anyone simply trying to get a grip on what can be one of the scariest things to happen to you for the first time, we highly recommend this book.

Fearless Pregnancy: Wisom and Reassurance from a Doctor, a Midwife, and a Mom Overview

Like other best-selling pregnancy books, this The Fearless Pregnancy shares first-person information from a new mom, but what sets it apart from the other books is that it also includes helpful advice from both a doctor and a midwife. Chapters include: 1. The Pregnancy Book: Month-by-Month, Everything You Need to Know From America's Baby Experts Review

This pregnancy book is *much* better than the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" book that is so often recommended to every pregnant woman out there. It is also much better than the other 'standard' pregnancy books you'll find.
This book is a complete and joyful guide to what happens during pregnancy - mentally, emotionally, and physically - to mom and baby. It has a great index; so if a specific symptom doesn't crop up in the exact month they cover it, you can easily look it up in the back and read about it. I found this guide very informative and supportive of everything I'm going through with my second pregnancy. [I wish I'd had this book for my first pregnancy, instead of that wretched "what to expect" book].
My one criticism of this book: the Sears' gloss over the pain that most women experience during labor. I didn't find the segment on labor very helpful or realistic. As a Childbirth Educator myself, I don't feel that anyone is doing pregnant women a favor by convicing them that labor doesn't hurt - that it is just 'pressure' or 'discomfort'. The reality is that for most women, labor IS painful - often extremely so. Women who seek an unmedicated birth need to prepare themselves to cope with and overcome this pain. And regardless of whether a woman expects to use medication or not, nobody is doing her any favors by misleading her about labor pain - she's not going to thank them when it hits her full on.
For preparing for labor and delivery, I *highly* recommend "Birthing From Within" by Pam England. It is much more realistic in preparing you for the "Real Thing" - and it is geared to help every woman work through her own issues and concerns about birthing. It is by far the most excellent book out there on labor and delivery.
Other than that small complaint - I think this is a *wonderful* guide to pregnancy - very supportive and comforting while being very honest.

Motherwell Maternity Fitness Plan Review

I'm a fitness instructor and I bought this book so I could be well versed on giving modifications to pregnant women that come to my classes. I found the book to be informative and contain a good amount of information beyond the typical "don't lay on your back" type of thing. The book addresses the pregnant athlete, eating well, posture, meditiation, stretching, getting in exercise while doing activities around the house, your skin, hormones, discomforts, etc. The book has some basic sketches/drawings in it which I thought were value added but this is not a picture book.
I found the book to be a great guide and it is recommended by the American Council on Exercise, which is who I have my group exercise certification through and how I originally found out about the book. I look forward to using the information for myself one day. In the meantime, I'm loaning it to one of my trusted newly pregnant students so she can keep fit while pregnant. I highly recommend this one especially if you're only buying one fitness book for pregnancy.

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy Review

"The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy" is a difficult book to rate. Vicki Iovine's honesty and sense of humor about pregnancy deserves 5 stars. If you find pregnancy difficult for even a moment, this book will be a great comfort to you. It is a delightful antidote to the dry, frightening pregnancy books that flood the market.
But I found myself angry with a couple of the positions Vicki takes and how she presents them, especially regarding natural childbirth. This is why I knocked my rating down to 3 stars. She seems to take it quite personally that some women make birth choices different from her own, and she goes out of her way to be quite rude and petty about it.
The Good Stuff
* Vicki Iovine really and truly understands how traumatic pregnancy weight gain can be. We live in a society where we are taught to hate and fear getting fat, and we cannot just turn that lesson off when we get pregnant. It is HARD to go to the doctor and get weighed all the time, and be judged on if our gain is "acceptable" or not. Vicki gets this, she genuinely does, and it is such a joy to read her rants about it. You're not alone in being scared to step on the scale.
* The Guide includes a realistic, down-to-Earth discussion of what you really need to buy for your new baby, and what you can skip. A huge blessing for new moms!
* Much of Vicki's advice is wonderfully specific. For instance, she doesn't just tell you that you need to bring an outfit to the hospital for the baby to wear home - she tells you exactly what kind of outfit will work the best. She does honestly seem to remember what it's like to be a first-time mom and just not know these things.
* Vicki points out her own way of doing things, but she often describes the different choices her own girlfriends made. It is helpful to have realistic options and know that one way doesn't always work for everybody.
The Bad Stuff
* This book is downright hostile toward mothers who do not have epidurals. Vicki actively discourages women from considering unmedicated birth. She tells her readers that no matter how they feel about epidurals before they go into labor, they will ALL want one as soon as they get to the hospital, anyway, so they should just get used to the idea of having one. She also makes the highly unlikely claim that, even though she seems to have an endless list of girlfriends, she doesn't know a single woman who refused an epidural (except for medical reasons). She stoops so low as to claim that women who birth naturally have uglier faces after delivery. I don't know why she is so aggressive about this, but it is really off-putting. Even if you're not considering natural childbirth yourself, her tone is just downright catty and mean.
* Similarly, she chastises women who are disappointed to end up with c-sections. While she is totally supportive of a mother's turbulent emotions in just about everything else, she states that regretting a c-section is a sign of "self-centeredness." Even though she admits that a few of her girlfriends struggle with this problem. She suddently becomes very cold and uncaring when she covers this topic. Again, she seems to take it personally that some women regret c-sections, simply because she had one. I wish she could be a little more objective.
* Vicki contradicts herself frequently. She is happy to encourage women to embrace the natural process when it comes to weight gain, for instance. But she has no use for the natural process when it comes to birth - she thinks everyone should induce labor at a convenient moment.
* She is sympathetic and understanding about weight gain, but admits that she started out, pre-pregnancy, a size 4. Her definition of getting "big" is pushing a size 10. Most women can't relate to that.
* Vicki does actually suggest that if you don't have sex with your husband during pregnancy, he will get anxious and cheat on you. She has a very narrow and unfair opinion of men.
* She does not tell women not to exercise at all, but she does discourage *vigorous* exercise. This did not bother me. However, her approach did bother me. She goes to great lengths to tell you that if something goes wrong with the baby, and you have been exercising, you will blame yourself. This is true, but it's also true if you don't exercise at all. Mothers always blame themselves - if, God forbid, something happens to your baby and all you did was go to the grocery store that day, you will blame yourself for going to the store. A pregnant woman cannot insulate herself from guilt. Vicki seems to be aware of this, except when it comes to the things she takes personally. And exercise is one of those things. She is annoyed with women who try and "control" their pregnancies by exercising a lot. But she has no proof that this is actually a bad thing. It seems to bother her merely because it is not what she chose to do. Again, her tendency to be dismissive toward women who make other choices is very annoying.
* If you read the 1995 version of this book, the chapter on maternity clothing is hopelessly outdated. But this may be remedied in the second edition that is currently in the works.Overall, this book is refreshing, fun, and comforting. It will make you feel better about being pregnant. But take Vicki Iovine's rants about epidurals, exercise, and c-sections with a large grain of salt.

Pregnancy and Birth: Your Questions Answered Review

As we know, doctors have become increasingly busy. You are lucky if you can get all your questions answered. To be well informed about pregnancy and birth, it does help to read as many books as possible on the subject.
The information presented here covers every stage of pregnancy from conception to childbirth. It also covers the baby's first six weeks. The advice is given by a team of two obstetricians and a midwife in a highly accessible format. Dr. Christoph Lees specializes in obstetrics, Dr. Karina has practiced in various teaching hospitals and is also a consultant. Grainne McCartan has worked as a community midwife.
The book is organized into eight color-coded thematic sections for easy reference. Being pregnant today is far different than being pregnant 25 years ago. Today's mother prepares for pregnancy, takes prenatal care very seriously, understands how her baby is developing, is well-informed on changes in her body, knows how to stay fit and healthy, understands issues in pregnancy, is prepared for labor and birth and has all this information at her disposal in this handy reference.
New mothers who did not plan their pregnancy will be happy to learn that the birth control pills they are taking will rapidly clear from their bodies and won't hurt the baby. What happens at a prenatal visit? Did you know that Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease passed on to humans by domestic cats? A good reason to make your husband change the litter box. I didn't realize that pregnant women should also wear gloves when doing yard work.
You will enjoy reading about which herbal remedies are fine to take in pregnancy. Ginger can help the digestive system and prevent nausea. There are so many items in this book you will want to read about. It is better to be well prepared for all the items in this book. What happens if you have a breech birth? What are the stages of labor? What if I am having twins? How do I breastfeed? What happens if my baby must be in intensive care? How should I exercise before and after the birth. Can I have sex at all stages of my pregnancy? What happens in the first, second and third trimesters? What does my baby look like as he/she grows? Should I refuse an invasive test? How will my family adjust to a new baby? What is postpartum depression?
Pregnancy and childbirth is uncharted territory for new mothers-to-be. With this book in hand, you will have the guidance you need to help you have a happy, healthy pregnancy and labor.
~The Rebecca Review

The Anxious Parent's Guide to Pregnancy Review

I already have two children and have read about every pregnancy book out there. I was looking for something new to talk me through number 3 and make the information fresh again, and was thrilled to find Dr. DiLeo's book. The information is complete, understandable, and up to date, and the style is light-hearted and soothing. I appreciate that in addition to giving information on options and variations, he shares his personal opinion, based on years of experience in the delivery room, on what he would want for someone in his family. He also shares his frustration with the interference of insurance companies into medical decisions.
Dr. DiLeo is only dogmatic about one thing: he wants you to pick your provider carefully, and then TRUST them. If you don't trust your doctor, get a new one. I've read several books that encourage women to question and doubt their careprovider every step of the way, which seems to me to increase women's anxiety. Both you and your doctor want the same result--a healthy baby and mother. This book will give you the information you need to work with your care provider toward that goal.

The Anxious Parent's Guide to Pregnancy Overview

A smart, authoritative, and comforting source for expectant mothers and their loved ones

"An outstanding blend of practical information and humor. Dr. DiLeo provides a wealth of useful information in a style that ensures a productive relationship between patient and physician. This book should be required reading for any patient who desires a "low stress" pregnancy. Dr. DiLeo's insight on pregnancy is so valuable my plan is to recommend this superb contribution to the literature to all of my patients."--Douglas M. Montgomery, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., Chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ochsner Clinic Foundation, New Orleans

"A wonderful, must-read book. Dr. DiLeo possesses an extremely rare combination of medical expertise, along with the ability to write in an informative and entertaining style, adding strong doses of compassion and wit. I've read just about every pregnancy book available, and many make great bedtime reading (as the medical jargon and dry writing styles often put you right to sleep). This book will not only keep you awake, you will be compelled to read it from cover to cover while you celebrate the miracle of your pregnancy with your favorite book and doctor. Dr. DiLeo is a wonderful person, an excellent doctor, and a brilliant writer. If only he could deliver your baby too!" --Jeanine Cox, publisher and cofounder, BabyZone.com

"As both a surgeon and first-time pregnant woman, I had the privilege of reading this book from both perspectives. Dr. DiLeo provides a guide that interweaves the parent with the obstetrician, the philosophy with the physiology, and the practical with the miraculous. This book is nothing less than a complete celebration of pregnancy and childbirth, but with all the facts. An entertaining read! True to its title, my anxiety as a prospective mother has been successfully tamed by the perspective Dr. DiLeo instills into even the serious complications that are a part of any thorough discussion of pregnancy. The surgeon in me applauds an important, informative book. The mother in me finds great comfort in the perspective provided, and the woman in me had great fun reading such a charming and funny book about such a serious subject."--Elizabeth Kinsley, M.D., F.A.C.S.

"Dr. DiLeo's take on nutrition in pregnancy is right on. Finally, someone has decided to stop over-complicating the diet for normal pregnancy with ridiculous chapters on calorie counting that no one will follow. And finally, someone has decided to champion the role of nutrition and diet in complications unique to high-risk pregnancy. This is the pregnancy book that dietitians and nutritionists have been waiting for. And it's fun too. It's a book that's both delicious and nutritious."--Diana Davis, L.D.N., R.D., licensed nutritionist, holistic Registered Dietitian, certified American Dietetic Association, national lecturer on nutrition and neuro-linguistics

As expectant parents--especially if you are first-timers--you know pregnancy is synonymous with anxiety. You and your partner require lots of hand-holding from your doctors, loved ones, and friends. Like a soothing cup of chamomile tea, a handy bedside reference, and your dream obstetrician all rolled into one, The Anxious Parent's Guide to Pregnancy is your source of must-have information, inspiration, and, of course, comfort, in the angst-ridden world of pregnancy.

Inspired by BabyZone.com, the number-one parenting website (more than a half million visitors a month)--and written by its obstetrical adviser, Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo--this friendly, fun, authoritative guide helps you separate fact from fiction, while calmly and rationally filling you in on common problems that may arise during pregnancy and how to deal with them.

Great Expectations: Your All-in-One Resource for Pregnancy & Childbirth Review

This is the most informative, positive, and non-scary pregnancy book I've read. Every other pregnancy book I've read (including What to Expect When You're Expecting) made me cry after every paragraph as it detailed all the horrible things that a woman can do to permanently damage her baby, all the awful ways a woman's body will be disfigured by pregnancy and childbirth, and how a woman's life will be completely changed, not for the better, once the child is born. This book, on the other hand, presents information about pregnancy and childbirth in a wholly positive manner, even when detailing the potential pitfalls of pregnancy and childbirth. The information in this book is current and up-to-date, and the book is very well-written. I would recommend the book just for the positive and reassuring tone alone, and all the excellent information in the book is a bonus. Once you read this book, you won't need any other.

Great Expectations: Your All-in-One Resource for Pregnancy & Childbirth Overview

Highly praised by expectant parents and childbirth educators alike, this comprehensive pregnancy reference (704 pages) is specifically designed for today's hurried moms (and dads) for getting them through pregnancy and early baby care. The illustrated Baby Gear Guide warns about unsafe products and offers solid, research-based facts for choosing the safest car seats, cribs, soft carriers, baby diapers and clothing. Your Guide to Giving Birth is the most up-to-date labor and birth resource available to parents today. Based on brand-new medical evidence, it helps families to realistically plan for labor and delivery, including detailed "you are there" descriptions for every major intervention and medication they're likely to encounter -- such as epidurals, inductions and cesarean sections. You and Your Baby presents a complete guide for the first six months of life after birth. There's mom-friendly advice for post-birth recovery, and baby-sensitive care strategies for feeding, bathing, diapering, soothing and helping a baby to sleep. The book's Resource Guide lists over 100 of the best Internet sites for parents. The comprehensive Pregnancy Dictionary translates 200-plus pregnancy and medical terms into easy-to-understand lay language. "I have this book as well as What to Expect When Expecting, and I find this book to be so much better as it gives a week to week breakdown of what is happening to both mom and baby. I pick up this book each week as my pregnancy progresses and even though not every issue listed in each week's summary necessarily happens to me, it's good to know what I 'could' expect. I would highly recommend this book to any expecting mom!" -- Cynthia, an expectant mother"If you are searching for one book for your pregnancy or for that one book to refer all of your expectant clients to, this book is by far the greatest achievement in childbirth education reading material! Sandy Jones and her daughter Marcie Jones have included absolutely everything an expectant woman and her family needs to know. This book should be on everyone's recommended reading list"--Connie Livingston, BS, RN, FACCE (Dona), CCE, CLD, birthsource.com"Great Expectations is the perfect resource for moms-to-be. Sandy and Marcie Jones speak to the expectant mother of today in a friendly, approachable tone, and present their thorough information in a way that's great for both quick look-ups, and in-depth reading."--Stacia Ragolia, VP, Community & Parenting, iVillage.com"Accurate, comprehensive, empowering, and current. I see this as being the new Dr. Spock for pregnancy...This is definitely a book I will recommend to my clients who are planning a pregnancy or currently pregnant."--Cherie C. Binns, RN, BS, MSCN

Pregnant Woman's Comort Book : A Self-Nurturing Guide to Your Emotional Well-Being During Pregnancy and Early Motherhood Review

This book was very helpful to me during and after my pregnancy. The book includes chapters on physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of pregnancy and helps you plan for the postpartum period. Louden offers practical suggestions (for instance, think of food in terms of colors and try to include every color each day) and ideas for you to explore about your ideal birth, what you will miss about your life before the baby, etc. There were many times when I was going through something and could find just the chapter to fit my situation (i.e. "I am a body without a brain"). And I was glad I went through the postpartum chapters before my daughter was born. During those first two insane months of motherhood, I could go back to my journaling based on those chapters and remind myself of the things that were important. Thanks to Jennifer's suggestions, I had even created lists of resources to turn to when things got tough.
One reviewer mentions the new-agey aspects of the book. I am also not particularly comfortable with that brand of spirituality, but I just ignored those parts, which only made a small portion of the book. The book is good enough that the parts I skipped didn't detract from its value to me.
Also, don't skip this book if you are adopting a baby. Although you may not relate to the chapters about the physical aspects of pregnancy, there are plenty of chapters that explore your feelings about motherhood, so this book will work for you.
I highly recommend this book to mothers-to-be of all types!

I laughed a ton from the very first page! It was a great book and very accurate descriptions of a womans feelings during the not so pleasant pregnancy side effects.

Pregnancy Pocket Book: What to Expect When Giving Birth, from Conception to Delivery to Newborn Care, Including Alternative and Natural Health Options Review

We are pregnant with our first baby, and this book is a good reference. It's a portable, no-nonsense book, which is great to read straight through, fits in your pocket or purse (take it with you to your visits!), and stick it in the nightstand as a reference.
Unlike "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and many others we've read, this book is concise, with no fluff. It's to-the-point, well-organized, and filled with useful information presented in a clear format. It has great sections on what various symptoms mean, tips and advice, what-if's... and one of the beast chapters is the last: what to do when you get home with your baby.
Chances are, your pregnancy and delivery will go smoothly and event free. However, most first time mothers are unprepared with what to do when you get home with your baby! Take the advice of other reviewers - take the time now (while you still have some quiet time) to read the last few chapters of this book, such as breastfeeding, swaddling, what to do about crying, etc.
We've read dozens of birthing books so far, and ultimately decided out of all of them, only 3 books are necessary & essential: This pregnancy book, Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way, and Husband-Coached Childbirth. We learned that Lamaze doesn't work well - Lamaze breathing tenses up the muscles that need to be nice & relaxed. We also learned that a Bradley natural birth is quicker recovery for the mother, results in much faster labor (30-120 minutes on average), and has the lowest chances of problems, C-section, or requiring an episiotomy (*you really, REALLY do not want this - cutting open the vagina is *not* necessary, it is very painful after birth, it may permanently ruin sex, & it takes months or years to recover).
While "Pregnancy What To Expect..." provides all the basic information (preparation, safety, prenatal, symptoms, etc.), the two Bradley books talk specifically about labor. (Please note, however, the Bradley books are quite opinionated - there's no fluff, but I definitely would not call them objective. They are very much against most standard practices).
One tip ALL expecting mothers should follow: Make sure you get enough protein! There is no magic formula for eating while pregnant, but your developing baby needs 80-100 grams of protein a day! Most pregnant women don't get enough, leading to fatigue (the baby will "take it" from you body and muscle mass if you're not eating enough). Look up a protein counter online, make sure your milk & meats are hormone-free, and don't forget that kelp, spinach, and greens have a LOT of protein in addition to vitamins and minerals.
Bottom line: I strongly recommend you read as much as you want, until you feel comfortable with your birthing decisions. Whatever you do, have a birth plan - or else the doctors will decide for you. Please take the time to be as well-informed as you can, and have a safe and happy pregnancy!

Stupid Things You Should Never Say to Pregnant Women: For the Dads-To-Be, Relatives, Friends, and Strangers in Their Lives Review

If you're looking for a fun gift to give an expecting couple, this is it. While this book, I believe, is not meant to be very serious, it really has some great points to make while taking a relaxed and funny approach. Everyone will laugh at the pictures and all the "stupid" things never to say to a pregnant woman.

Stupid Things You Should Never Say to Pregnant Women: For the Dads-To-Be, Relatives, Friends, and Strangers in Their Lives Overview

Stupid Things You Should Never Say to Pregnant Women is not only hilarious, but insightful as well. Johnathan Burton has taken his own experiences and brought them to life with his writing and illustrations. This book captures a variety of everyday challenges that face pregnant women and offers ways to make their lives more comfortable while explaining mom-to-be's point of view. This is a great book choice for anyone that will be around a pregnant woman during pregnancy. From decorating the nursery and frequent bathroom breaks, to intimacy and choosing a name for the little one, this book covers it all! www.JohnathanBurton.com

Pregnancy: The Ultimate Week-by-Week Pregnancy Guide Review

When we had our first child my wife got all of the other pregnancy books that tracked the process week by week. We found many of them helpful but we still went to each doctor's visit with a long list of questions. We grabbed this book as a reference guide towards the end of my wife's second pregnancy and found it to be the most informative, direct, and comprehensive pregnancy book on the market. Every basic day to day question that we ever brought to our doctor was answered simply and directly in this book.
If we were having a baby for the first time again, we would without hesitation make this our number one source of information outside of our obstetrician.
The post partum section is great too. It really gives insight in to what it's like to have a newborn in the house and how to deal with the challenges of the first few weeks.
Great book!!!!

The Panic-Free Pregnancy: An OB-GYN Separates Fact from Fiction on Food, Exercise, Travel, Pets, Coffee, Medications, and Concerns You Have When You Are Expecting Review

This book was recommended by my ob gyn and can I just say - thank goodness it was! I really take issue with the doula's review below, and feel that she skimmed the book instead of taking the time to read it.
For example, he doesn't say that you should not increase your water consumption, but rather dispells the myth that you have to drink 8.5 glasses a day. He also goes into detail why things like changing the cat litter, eating sushi, and drinking coffee and occasional alcohol are actually not the horrid things that we've been told, and more importantly ( I thought), he told you what the actual studies were that gave people the info in the first place. In one example, he cited a study which followed 100,000 women who drank less than 2 units of alcohol a day. Not one of the babies born to these women showed any ill effects whatsoever.
But he also stresses that smoking is incredibly harmful and should be eliminated completely.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is pregnant or wants to become pregnant. A stressed out mother can be more harmful to the unborn child than one who is happy and confident in her choices.

The Panic-Free Pregnancy: An OB-GYN Separates Fact from Fiction on Food, Exercise, Travel, Pets, Coffee, Medications, and Concerns You Have When You Are Expecting Overview

While most pregnancy books only address the stages of the baby's development, The Panic-Free Pregnancy comprehensively covers the lifestyle issues and questions that confront every mom-to-be. Dr. Broder separates fact from fiction, media hype from old wives tales, and drawing on the latest scientific research offers an accessible, comprehensive reference book that answers questions about... €Caffeine €Exercise €Flying €Prescription and over-the-counter medications €Sex €Cosmetics €Alcohol €Herbal remedies €and more Organized in an easy-to-use question-and-answer format, this book will help women have the safest, healthiest, most anxiety-free pregnancy possible.

Getting Pregnant: What You Need To Know Right Now Review

I suffer from infertility and endometriosis. The latest edition of "Getting Pregnant" is excellent and a huge improvement from the last edition. It has been completely revised and updated for the millenium with all of the latest information on infertility treatment and fertility procedures. I feel that this would be one of the most helpful books for anyone who is trying to get pregnant (and I own A LOT of fertility books).I also consider this to be a great source of information for couples who are suffering from infertility.
The 2000 edition contains a bunch of new information and is twice the size of the 1992 edition. It includes the more "advanced" fertility info on immune disorders, male infertility, diet & "fertility foods", preventing miscarriage, new fertility surgeries, latest on high-tech fertility procedures, latest on fertility drugs and as well as the more basic information on how to increase your chances of conceiving, etc. (stuff for "beginners").
I finally did conceive last month, but I sadly miscarried 2 weeks ago. I was looking for pregnancy loss books, when I noticed that my "Getting Pregnant" book had been updated. I decided to purchase this book instead of a miscarriage book. I am really glad I did! It has helped me look forward to resuming my infertility treatment so I can try to get pregnant again. I am also looking forward to discussing many of the things that I learned from this book with my Reproductive Endocrinologist at our next consultation.
I really appreciate how encouraging Dr. Laurensen is. He is positive and upbeat, while remaining realistic. I am going through a really difficult time right now and this book has "lifted my spirits" a little bit. The book is also very easy to read, eventhough it covers some very technical stuff. It is very "reader-friendly"!
Much thanks to Dr. Laurensen and Ms. Bouchez for revising and updating their book!

Pregnancy Sucks: What to do when your miracle makes you miserable Review

Author Joanne Kimes is not afraid to be blunt, and she has a sardonic wit that makes you realize that, yes, pregnancy can suck, but you will still be smiling. It seems that most women possess a convenient amnesia about their pregnancies. You will seldom get a straight answer about the discomfort of pregnancy from a woman who has a child over the age of two. The pregnancy has been forgotten by then, replaced by the child and its ensuing responsibilities. Little things like morning sickness, cramps, and constipation are left behind. But, when a woman is pregnant, and everyone is implying that she shouldn't be feeling as bad as she does, it tends to make a woman feel like she's over-reacting.
Well, Joanne Kimes doesn't think you're over-reacting. She shares the bad and the good of pregnancy, and lets you know it's perfectly alright to be uncomfortable, sick, and grumpy while pregnant. The joys will eventually outweigh the negative aspects, but you are given permission to complain. And, with the tongue-in-cheek wit of her writing, it's a true joy to read. I felt so much better after reading this book, because it's fine if your pregnancy sucks. We are not bad mothers or bad women, we're just facing the facts! I highly recommend this book to all pregnant women.

Pregnancy Sucks: What to do when your miracle makes you miserable Overview

That "glowing skin" everyone promised you looks remarkably similar to the hormonal acne you battled as a teenYour special bond with your husband? It means he can't sleep in the same room as you, thanks to your killer gasThe lady at the grocery store remarks "it must be any day now!" when you haven't finished your second trimesterYou debut the perfect name for your baby--which your mother-in-law immediately describes as "interesting" (complete with a wrinkled nose)There's no doubt about it: Pregnancy isn't all it's cracked up to be. In this complete update of the bestselling first edition, Joanne Kimes pairs no-holds-barred humor with helpful advice to get you through the next nine months with (some level of) your sanity intact. So whether you're looking for the scoop on hypnobirthing, you want to know a cure for your hemorrhoids, or you really just want a laugh (even if you might pee in your maternity leggings), this book will tell you exactly what to do when that miracle of yours is making you totally, completely, gestationally miserable.

DIY Baby Do It Yourself Baby: Your Essential Pregnancy Handbook Review

PROS: Dr Shelley Binkley is an obstetrician who provides a great deal of very helpful information on pregnancy and the process of birth, sometimes utilizing really good photos... I found her approach to dicussing the information refreshingly easy to read and informative. She includes a large variety of pertinent information about different aspects of pregnancy and birth with a good inclusion of options. I recommend this book for pregnant moms wanting to learn more about whats going on with their body and the birth process. It is well laid out/ a quick easy reference.
CONS: She mixes in her own experiences occasionally which is sometimes good but as a health care professional.... not always a good thing. I feel options should be presented factually without opinion. Some of the good photos are too small to see detail. :( She discusses homebirth ... good :)...but clearly steers the reader away from that option. It just isn't my style of teaching. Let the reader decide with good information and education.
As a lactation professional, I do not recommend this book for breastfeeding information. All breastfeeding books can get outdated quickly. It is the interjection of personal opinion of breastfeeding management, sometimes not entirely correct that concerns me the most.

I really enjoyed reading this pregnancy book. Unlike other pregnancy books out there, this one is organized week-by-week, so I can follow along with my pregnancy. The fun tidbits, facts, and tips were really entertaining and very helpful.
I'd recommend this book to any new moms-to-be. It's a must-have!

I highly recommend this book!
