Thomas N. Leung

The Way of the Fertile Soul: Ten Ancient Chinese Secrets to Tap into a Woman's Creative Potential Overview

Being fertile and fruitful can mean giving birth to a child -- but to have a fertile soul means to give birth to the true self a woman wants to be: to live a life filled with passion, strength, joy, and adventure. In The Way of the Fertile Soul, Dr. Randine Lewis outlines ten ancient Chinese medical and Taoist "secrets" that hold the little-known key to successfully conceiving babies, new dreams, and a fulfilling life for women at any phase in their lives. The Way of the Fertile Soul encourages women to strive toward health, abundance, and a fruitful, joyous approach to life. By using diagnostic questionnaires, qi gong exercises, and guided meditations to help the reader understand how the elements of nature express themselves in her body, mind, and spirit, The Way of the Fertile Soul provides the tools to greatly increase a woman's chance of conceiving, identify imbalances, reduce stress, increase energy, and uncover her intrinsic creativity and express it fully.

The Long-Awaited Stork: A Guide to Parenting After Infertility Review

The Long Awaited Stork is the book that I wish I'd found three years ago when my twins were born! Like many other infertility veterans, I thought that my struggles were over when I became pregnant and delivered two healthy baby girls. Indeed, things are great but I still find that infertility is part of my life. I loved it when Ms. Glazer referred to the "cameo appearances" that infertility makes. It's a great description for those waves of feeling that come back when I least expect them. This book is a GREAT gift for anyone who is newly pregnant or for a new adoptive parent.

The Long-Awaited Stork: A Guide to Parenting After Infertility Overview

Parenting After InfertilityParents who have wondered about the long term impact of infertility on their self image will find the answers in this insightful book.--Lois Melina, author of Raising Adopted Children and Making Sense of AdoptionFinally, here's a book that's sensitive and responsive to the unique emotional experience of parenting after a long, ardous course of infertility diagnosis and treatment. The Long-Awaited Stork gives you all the information, advice, and support you need to adjust to and cope with the special problems of parenting after infertility.

Preventing Miscarriage: The Good News Review

While "Preventing Miscarriage: the Good News" provided much detailed information, I found it to provide little hope or optimism to me as someone who experienced her first pregnancy and miscarriage. Each of the stories went into great detail on the many miscarriages experienced by each women and the final desperate measures they took to have a successful pregnancy. The unwritten message I received was "once a miscarrier, always a miscarrier." I would recommend this book to anyone who has experienced more than two or three miscarriages. But if this is your first miscarriage and you want to read this book, be prepared to be depressed.

The Infertility Cure: The Ancient Chinese Wellness Program for Getting Pregnant and Having Healthy Babies Review

This book is a MUST READ for anyone trying to get pregnant. At 39 I had an FSH of 15.9 and was told by a fertility specialist to consider donor eggs or adoption - end of story no other options. He said I was out of eggs and gave me a 5% chance of conciving (with or without IVF) and a 1% chance of carrying a baby to full term. My husband and I where devistated to say the least. I did tons of research, sat in chat rooms and read thousands of on-line postings and support group websites. This book made the difference! I never believed in anything non-western and thought all the other stuff like acupuncture was hokey. I read the book cover to cover, followed a strict diet and did acupunture. After one, yes ONE month of trying I became pregnent and had a perfect girl. Nine months after that I did everything again and after four months of trying go pregnant again and have perfect little boy. I want to put their pictures on a brick and throw it through that doctors wondow. If you are having problems please read this book. While I understand that this may not help someone with blocked tubes who needs surgery at least you can check the box that it's not an imbalance due to bad diet or stress. Please ladies, read this book with an open mind and give it a try. This book and a lot of sincere prayer helped me. And to those of you trying who are frustrated and heartbroken please know that you are not alone!

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians: How to Stay Sane and Care for Yourself from Pre-conception through Birth, 2nd Edition Review

Hooray! The second edition of this first-of-its-kind book has even more useful information and is totally up-to-date. The best thing about it is still the author's voice, which is strong and supportive -- and funny -- on every page. This book is infused with the wisdom of someone who's been through it all, back when there weren't any books about it, and is eager to shepherd others through the process. Equally encouraging are the many quotes from other dyke mamas (and mamas-to-be) describing their own experiences, from the just- thinking-about-it stage to actually giving birth.
Some questions this book will help you think through: am I (are we) ready for kids? can I do it alone? how to choose a donor? what is it like, trying to get pregnant? what are my options if I don't get pregnant quickly? how will I handle being pregnant? what kind of birth do I hope for? what is it like for the non-bio mom? and what kind of family will we be in those early days?
In each case the author doesn't tell you what to do, but helps you figure out what YOU want to do. She clearly has her own preferences -- unmedicated birth is best; circumcision sucks; breastfeeding rocks! -- but they are carefully argued, pretty persuasive, and the tone is consistently pro-child and pro-women.
Sensibly, Pepper puts the tough stuff up front: the first chapter is about getting yourself as physically, mentally, financially and legally ready to start a family as you can possibly be. Then it's on to getting the goods, finding out what's going on under the hood, and starting the crazy ride on the conception "rollercoaster." The chapter offering Ten Tips to Keep You Sane during this crazy period is worth the price of the book alone!
These early chapters are the most detailed and probably the ones you'll read over and over, but there are also useful roadmaps to each trimester, as well as a helpful section on sexuality and pregnancy, birth options, and the early weeks with your baby. There's also a comprehensive index and a helpful section on extra resources, from lesbian-friendly sperm banks to useful books to dyke-mama blogs.
In a nice touch, the new edition is dedicated not only to "every lesbian dreaming baby dreams" but also "the many dyke daddies and tranny pops out there." Right on.
As a further bonus, the new cover is gorgeous, as is the photo of the author and her now seven year old daughter -- clearly that rollercoaster was worth it! It all adds to the supportive, happy vibe of this indispensable guide to what the author calls "the wacky world of lesbian conception and pregnancy."

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians: How to Stay Sane and Care for Yourself from Pre-conception through Birth, 2nd Edition Overview

The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians covers everything you need to make the thrilling and challenging journey to motherhood: from choosing a donor to tracking fertility to signing the right papers on the dotted lines. Rachel Pepper's lively, easy-to-read guide is the first place to go for up-to-date information and sage advice on everything from sex in the sixth month to negotiating family roles. Why a second edition? When the acclaimed first edition appeared, the author's daughter was only a few months old. This new edition takes into account the parenting know-how Pepper has developed over the intervening six years, as well as the evolving legal status of lesbian parents, and the increasing importance of the Internet for information on fertility, sperm banks, and donors. The resource section is greatly expanded, as are the sections on each trimester of pregnancy, on childbirth, and on life with a newborn. And Pepper provides more insight into preconception planning for both single lesbians and couples. An indispensable resource, The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians is now bigger and better.

Wanting Another Child: Coping With Secondary Infertility (Garland Reference Library of Social Science) Review

Harriet Fishman Simons's description of how it feels to have a child but be unable to have another exactly mirrored how I have felt, and I think the book was very perceptive in describing the unique sorrow that faces parents who want so much but cant have another child. Her description of the differences between how women and men deal with this problem is particularly good and corresponds to how I have felt and how other women I know have felt. I cried reading this book but found it cathartic. However, my one complaint about this book is the relative neglect is gives to the issue of secondary infertility stemming from multiple miscarriages rather than the failure to conceive. I have searched for books that deal with this issue--and I think this is not uncommon for women suffering from secondary infertility. The issue of whether to keep trying, the fact that in most cases the doctors cant give you any reason for the failure, the toll that miscarriage places on your marriage and on raising your child, arent really dealt with except for passing references.

My Mother's Child (Urban Christian) Review

What does a perfect family do when life becomes unpredictable? The Stokes are soon to find out. Will their love for each other endure what God has allowed to happen? Dawn Abrams shares how a innocent smile and a business card can turn a family life upside down. As I read this book, I found myself wanting to read the last chapter to see how it would end. Curiosity was trying to get the best of me. As I maintained my self I was not disappointed.. it ended just the way it was suppose to!

My Mother's Child (Urban Christian) Overview

Lyric Stokes lives, by most standards, a charmed life. Married to Michael Stokes, a prominent heart surgeon, she has financial security and lives in the lap of luxury. All is not perfect, though. Lyric feels inadequate because she gave birth to a daughter, rather than the son that her husband so desperately wanted. After an unexpected turn of events, Lyric discovers that she's pregnant again, but now she has to decide whether she even wants to keep the child she has longed for. Nigel Fredericks has a history of stalking women. He's been accused, but never convicted. Now he's set his sights on Lyric. She's at a low point in her life, and Nigel knows just how to take advantage of that vulnerability. Lyric's life is turned upside down; Nigel is like a cancer eating away at her mental stability, her marriage, and ultimately, her life. Will Michael reevaluate his priorities and his faith in time to save his family?

Getting Pregnant Naturally: Healthy Choices To Boost Your Chances Of Conceiving Without Fertility Drugs Review

This book in combination with Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" I gained knowledge of my body and what might jump start my hormonal problems. We have been trying unsucessfully to get pregnant for 1 year, and today I found out we're pregnant. I used an herbal remedy in regulating female hormones and 2 days later my body responded. I was due for a dose of Clomid to do the same thing I achieved on my own. I recommend these books to anyone seeking knowledge about ther bodies, and help achieving pregnancy.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM) Getting Pregnant: Boost Your Fertility with the Best of Traditional and Alternative Therapies Review

Are you or someone close to you trying to get pregnant? Then this is definitely the book for you!
Raymond Chang, MD, clearly outlines how to boost fertility in couples that are struggling to get pregnant. His primary focus is on traditional Chinese medicine, but he also offers some information on foods, vitamins, herbs and other supplements that can be helpful to fertility.
Especially impressive is Chang's ability to clearly explain both the conventional Western approach to fertility as well as more natural traditional approaches. Often when writers describe Chinese medicine, it can sound esoteric, confusing and downright batty. Chang is able to speak in terms of Eastern and Western medicine in a manner that allows the couple to feel empowered and able to work with their natural fertility rather than feel helpless and "infertile," as they are often labeled by conventional medicine.
Chang provides a very balanced view of fertility and integrates both Western and Eastern medicine to allow couples to boost fertility and become pregnant. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Getting Pregnant is a must read for any couple that is struggling to conceive.
Armchair Interviews says: Good advice for couples.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM) Getting Pregnant: Boost Your Fertility with the Best of Traditional and Alternative Therapies Overview

The best of Eastern & Western medicine is combined by physician-acupuncturist Raymond Chang, who offers individualized strategies for the millions of couples who want to improve their odds of conceiving.

The Mother of All Pregnancy Books: The Ultimate Guide to Conception, Birth, and Everything In Between (U.S. Edition) Review

All you have to do is visit your local bookstore to see how many books are devoted to pregnancy, infertility, and post-partum, etc. This is the ONLY book that successfully covers them ALL. Ann Douglas has given us the COMPLETE guide to having a baby- the first 4 chapters alone are devoted to preparing the body for pregnancy, along with the feelings that go along with "Are we really ready to have a baby?". This book is chock full of charts, statistics, and best of all, advice and testimonies from 100 couples Douglas interviewed. Not as clinical and stringent as "What to Expect"...., yet a little more serious than the "Girlfriend's Guide...", "Mother of All Pregnancy Books" is the be all end all of pregnancy books. Topics covered are as follows:
*What does it really cost to raise children?
*Watch your weight- but not too carefully
*Create a "sperm-friendly" vaginal environment
*The major causes of infertility
*Finding Dr. Right
*The pregnancy nutrient check
*The top-ten 1st/2nd and 3rd trimester worries
*What's normal and what's not
*Pregnancy complaints from A-Z
*What pre-natal testing can- and can't- tell you
*Husband coached birth, or doula (a gir's best friend!)
*What labor is REALLY like
*When pregnancy isn't perfect (e.g. preemies, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancy, intrapartum death, molar pregnancy, etc.)
*Your post-partum body- what to expect
*The post-partum survival guide
Did I lie? This book covers it all. The biggest complaint my friend had regarding Vicki Iovine's "Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" (which I loved) was how casually the topic of miscarriage was handled (my friend, who is now due the same week as me, has experienced 2 miscarriages). Ann Douglas, however, has experienced infertility, miscarriage, AND stillbirth (and has 4 kids). The caring and frank way she deals with grieving over the loss of a baby (even suggesting spending time with your baby's body, dressing it and taking your picture with it to cry and grieve over later) was touching and impressive all at once. WARNING: If you're particularly emotional, or can't handle one more added worry at this point in your pregnancy, you might want to skip this chapter, for fear of adding to the ever-growing bag of morbid worries to may already have. But, it's nice to know the subject is covered if, God forbid, the worst happens. If you are considering having a baby, or even if you're already pregnant, YOU NEED THIS BOOK. Browse through it once and you'll be impressed, I guarantee.

The Mother of All Pregnancy Books: The Ultimate Guide to Conception, Birth, and Everything In Between (U.S. Edition) Overview

The ultimate guide to conception, birth, and everything in between.Unlike all those otherbossy, tell-you-what-to-do titles, this funny, entertaining guide presents expectant parents with all the facts on such perennial hot topics as pain relief during labor, episiotomy, and circumcision, and empowers them to make informed personal choices. It's packed with tools you won't find anywhere else, including:* Charts highlighting the risks of using various over-the-counter drug productsduring pregnancy* Lists of the ten best -- and worst --baby products* A set of emergency childbirth procedures* Forthright discussions of difficult topics like infertility, high-risk pregnancy, and pregnancy and infant loss that other books are loathe to tackle

Budgeting for Infertility: How to Bring Home a Baby Without Breaking the Bank Review

Though at first I was skeptical at any book about the financial side of infertility, I realized a few pages into the book that the average reader would not only gain back the $16 spent on the book, but would probably save a minimum of several hundred dollars or more over the long run.
It doesn't just give you ways to save money, it gives you ways to understand how things relate to you financially on a personal level. For instance, it isn't helpful to make a statement about shared-risk plans without explaining how they work and who should use them. Financing can never be a one-size fits all approach.
And at the very least, the book helps you think outside the box and consider ways to save money on medications, treatments, and testing. It explains how to navigate insurance companies and how to find clinical trials. It explains fertility grants and scholarships and how to find them. But above all, it gives you the confidence to take charge of the financial side and understand how to budget for treatments.

What to Do When the Doctor Says It's PCOS: (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) Review

I have to say this was a good book because PCOS is a lousy and misunderstood disorder, and anything that helps get the word out about what it is and how to treat it is a GOOD BOOK. This book does cover the basics, such as how PCOS is thought to stem from insulin resistance and how diet, exercise, and certain medications can work to help relieve this puzzling and distressing syndrome. It also gives a very nice overview of alternative/complimentary/natural therapies.
There is probably nothing good to be said about this book that hasn't been said, so I will focus instead on the things that alarmed me. In no particular order:
1. The author claims that it is not understood why women with PCOS have higher miscarriage rates than healthy women. In fact, it is often the case that pregnant women with PCOS have low progesterone rates. It is imperative that a woman with PCOS have her progesterone levels tested should she become pregnant, and that she use supplementary progesterone under her doctor's care if need be. This is of course only one cause of miscarriage but is very common among women with PCOS (who have low progesterone as a general rule), it is easy to check, and has the potential to save a pregnancy. (I am editing this point to point out that many years and many fertility treatments later - I am no longer a believer in the progesterone theory. I think weak ovulations leads to low progesterone and therefore m/c. Supplementing with p4 does work sometimes but in most cases I think low p4 indicates an unhealthy pregnancy rather than something than can be fixed)
2. The author claims that after the first few weeks of pregnancy (actually once he says few and once he says 12) a woman should go off a metformin. In fact many women stay on metformin throughout their pregnancies and have perfectly healthy babies. Some doctors believe this can help prevent gestational diabetes (which women with PCOS are more prone to) and can help control excess weight gain. (I personally stayed on metformin throughout my pregnancy and continued on it while nursing. I believe 100% that my health was the better for it and my baby's was none the worse for it)
3. In mentioning birth control pills, Yasmin is not mentioned. This pill is made with a derivitive of spironalactone (a drug with anti-androgen effects which is mentioned) and is the only pill with such a feature available in the US. As such, a lot of women with PCOS have wonderful symptom relief on it. Other countries have Diane 35 which for some reason is not approved here. Yasmin has been around for a few years and this is a new book, so I am really surprised it wasn't mentioned.
4. At least one BCP that is suggested is a tri-phasic pill... however most other literature suggests that women with PCOS avoid tri-phasic pills. Of course no one pill is right for all women, with or without PCOS, but I found this curious.
5. The author states that there is no benefit to combining the insulin medications, such as using metformin and Avandia together. In fact, many women do not respond to one or the other but respond quite well when the two are combined. (Check some message boards with medication forums)
6. I feel that at times the author lends false hope to the belief that by lowering your androgen levels via diet, exercise, and insulin meds, the "hair" issues (excess body hair, loss of head hair) will be reduced. In fact... sadly, not many women seem to experience much relief from these symptoms without additional therapies such as laser (for excess hair) or other medications (spironalctone, etc).
All in all this is definately good reading for any woman with PCOS and/or the people who care about her... but as with all things, it must be read with a grain of salt and not taken as the absolute core of truth about this condition. The number one thing a woman with PCOS can do is educate educate educate, both herself and her loved ones. This book definately has a role there, but do not stop with just it. Read other books and definately check out internet forums to learn what has and hasn't worked for other women living with PCOS.

What to Do When the Doctor Says It's PCOS: (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) Overview

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the number one cause of irregular periods and infertility in women - yet most gynecologists fail to diagnose it.The disorder causes irregular cycles, infertility, weight gain, acne, and unsightly hair growth -- symptoms that can ultimately prove life-threatening as well as uncomfortable, humiliating, and emotionally disruptive.Only recently have women realized the danger lurking in what they thought were stress-induced problems. While researchers haven't determined the cause of PCOS, they know it is linked to insulin resistance, which can be controlled fairly easily with a low-carb diet. Most PCOS cases are diagnosed by reproductive endocrinologists when a woman's infertility has led her to seek a specialist.WHAT TO DO WHEN THE DOCTOR SAYS IT'S PCOS gives sufferers a diet and nutritional treatment program that goes beyond the usual regimen of birth control pills and fertility drugs. The millions of women victimized by this debilitating and demoralizing disorder will undoubtedly welcome this new program as an alternative or as a supplement to their current treatment plan.

Real Food for Mother and Baby: The Fertility Diet, Eating for Two, and Baby's First Foods Review

When we last heard from Nina Planck, she was a leader in the crusade for Real Food. Her precepts are, by now, familiar:
--- Eat foods with a long history in the human diet (peaches, spinach, lard).
--- Eat them in a whole state, or close to it, or produced in a traditional manner.
--- Eat foods that spoil. But eat them before they do.
--- Don't eat anything that's engineered to be something it's not --- low in something or high in something else. That includes orange juice with DHA --- the vital fatty acid found chiefly in fish --- made from algae. God or Nature (as you prefer) made us fish-eaters. You don't find fish in orange juice.
From the perspective of this household, she's one of the smarties, and her book belongs on the alongside the writing of Michael Pollan. Food writing like this comes less from academic study than from life experience, and Planck has of that --- she grew up on an organic farm and headed New York's Greenmarket. So it's hardly surprising that, when she got pregnant, she would soon be writing about a sensible diet for expectant mothers, what to eat after the baby's born, and what to find the little heir or heiress.
It helps to have read her first book. But worry not. In Real Food for Mother and Baby, Planck summarizes her previous writing. And on the strength of her story, she's doing something right: Five months after her son was born, she was wearing her "prepregnancy jeans".
But let's start with getting pregnant, which is easy to do if you're 19 and unmarried, harder to do if you're in your 30s and working hard. Your diet, she says, "can even affect your baby's genes in the womb." So you want to be in shape to be preggers. Planck pushes for an omnivore's diet and emphasizes the importance of fish oil. For better sperm, she suggests that men eat foods rich in vitamins A and E together.
Eating for two? Planck doesn't buy it. Better, she says, to eat well. But she's no nun. A glass of wine now and then does not, she believes, condemn the fetus to a stunted brain. Especially if you're stoking your body with iron --- by which she especially means red meat or liver, ideally from animals that were raised without drugs.
Once the kid is here, life gets easier. If, that is, you're nursing. Milk, she notes, is all a baby needs for six months. That's another reason for you to eat Real Food: "Thirty minutes after you eat an orange, Vitamin C appears in your milk, just like that." That doesn't mean you can't have some wine: "Once you metabolize alcohol, it disappears from your milk."
I had no idea that the baby's brain has remarkable growth in the first three months of life. Again, all the more reason for the mother to eat lots of "brain food". Want your kid, at age four, to leave other children in the dust? Take cod liver oil during pregnancy and the "fourth trimester."
Once the baby can take solid food, you may part company with Planck. "Raw ground beef or lamb with olive oil and salt?" Yikes! I see the logic. But still: yikes! I'm more comfortable reading about a traditional Italian regime for toddlers: grated Parmesan mixed with olive oil.
Whatever your disagreements with Planck, you can't fault her for stinting on her research. And so you pick up helpful tidbits along the way:
-- "Apple peels contain up to 40 percent of the antioxidant flavonoids in an apple and about one-third of the vitamin C."
-- "Unrefined sea salt contains about 80 essential minerals and trace elements."
-- "Statins, the class of drugs that stops your liver from making LDL, deplete your body of the antioxidant coenzyme CoQ10, which the heart muscle depends on."
Of all her advice, though, there's one suggestion that leaps out at me. Not only because of the common-sense wisdom at the heart of it. Even more, I admire her last line: "Stop searching for the new and the fake. Don't read the latest 'nutrition' bulletins. Eat old foods. Don't eat too much. That should leave time for other, satisfying activities --- like reading a novel."

Real Food for Mother and Baby: The Fertility Diet, Eating for Two, and Baby's First Foods Overview

Following the success of Real Food, Nina Planck's Real Food for Mother and Baby explains why real food is better for woman and child. Nina Planck, one of the great food activists, changed the way we view old-fashioned foods like butter with her groundbreaking Real Food. T hen she got pregnant. Never one to accept conventional wisdom blindly, Nina found the usual advice about pregnancy and baby food riddled with myths and misunderstandings. In Real Food for Mother and Baby, Nina explains why many modern ideas about pregnancy and infant nutrition are wrongheaded and why traditional foods are best. While Nina can be controversial—her op-ed in the New York Times on vegan diets for infants was one of the paper's most e-mailed articles— she's no contrarian. Readers applaud her candor; they also trust her research and welcome her advice. Nina's basic premise hasn't changed—whole foods are best—but some of the details are surprising. Pregnant women need meat and salt, not iron supplements. Nursing will be easier if you act like the mammal you are. Delaying the introduction of certain solid foods doesn't prevent allergies. Cereals are not the best foods for tiny eaters; meat and egg yolks are better. From conception to two years, the body's overwhelming needs are for quality fat and protein, not for carrots and low-fat dairy. Even as she casts a skeptical eye on the conventional wisdom, Nina is reassuring. She shows you how to keep your baby healthy on good, simple food. Real Food for Mother and Baby will be the new classic on eating for two.

Before You Conceive: The Complete Pregnancy Guide Review

Although the underlying concept of this book is good, I found several problems with it which, I believe, necessitates a major revision.
First: The publication date of this book is **** 1989; TEN years ago. **** Science progresses very quickly and there have been many new studies, discoveries, and issues raised (*especially* in the area of prepregnancy and pregnancy) which the book undoubtedly does not cover at all, does not cover enough, or may simply have incorrect information on. Due to the publication date of the book, I found myself very suspicious about certain information in the book, especially when the author makes a statement such as "not much is known," or "studies are still needed." I also feel suspicious when I read the statement that MRI is a "new and still experimental medical procedure." Ten years ago, MRIs * were * new and experimental-10 years ago I sat in one for two hours to have 4 pictures of my hand taken-now, MRI is well-established and takes considerably less time. No doubt, more research on its uses and effects has been done. In another example, the book mentions folic acid somewhat, but recent studies have put a brighter spotlight on this vitamin and new information has come out that may benefit us.
Second: The book, in my opinion, spends too much time focusing on risk factors that are specific to certain ethnic groups, people with certain diseases, people with past pregnancy problems, and other issues that are not applicable to everyone. Pages 149-369 are just that, and I found myself simply skipping most of the pages because I am not from certain ethnic groups and I do not have pre-existing diseases, I have not been pregnant before, I am not over 35, and I am not particularly at risk for particular (ethnic-specific) genetic diseases. I was disappointed that I paid for such a large book, most of which I ended up skipping.
I do not deny that these issues are important, however, I would suggest that the book be revised to include, in addition to updated information, more explanation of the areas that are common to * everyone * in order to make the book more useful to everyone.
For this, specifically, I thought that the sections dealing with toxins and medications were not complete enough, and that they could be expanded, as I know that exposure to toxins and the effects of medication are my MAJOR concerns when it comes to pregnancy. The section dealing with toxins did not list HOUSEHOLD toxins, rather it listed toxins in the workplace. One occupation in the table was titled "homemakers and domestic workers" and vaguely listed the toxins as "detergents, soaps, hydrocarbons, solvents, alkalies, bleaches, formaldehyde." I would like to see a list of brand names of common household products (cleaners, detergents, soaps, fabric softeners, air fresheners, cooking sprays, etc.), what chemicals they contain, and what the risk factors are, similar to the list of prescription and OTC drugs. I would like to know what I should and should not be using in my house, and perhaps a list of toxin-free products could be included.
The list of OTC drugs should also be updated to delete medicines no longer on the market, those with changed names, changed formulae, and to include drugs that have been introduced in the past ten years. The same applies for the list of prescription drugs, especially to include the wide variety of birth control pills now available.
Therefore, if the authors read this, I want to suggest that this book DESPERATELY NEEDS an updated edition to accomplish what I outlined above, as well as to correct some spelling and grammatical mistakes I encountered in the first few chapters.
I did appreciate the list of questions to ask yourself about preferences for an obstetrician, and the list of questions to ask the doctor and the prepregnancy checklist were both particularly helpful.
For the reader, I would suggest a more updated book on the subject, if it exists, until the authors can revise and update this book. If there is no other such book, then this is an excellent start.

Before You Conceive: The Complete Pregnancy Guide Overview

The most authoritative, comprehensive guide to the critically important concern of reducing the risks to one's baby before conception is sure to become a classic in the field of preventive medicine.

Your Fertility Signals: Using Them to Achieve or Avoid Pregnancy Naturally Review

This book is well written and easy to understand. There are helpful diagrams and charts that illustrate the points the author is making.
This book is for women who want to better understand their fertility, avoid or achieve conception, eliminate use of the pill or other chemical forms of birth control, and attempt to conceive a baby of one sex or the other. It explains how you can use your basal body temperature (taken before rising first thing in the morning) and your cervical mucous to tell whether you are fertile or not. This allows you to avoid intercourse if you are trying to avoid pregnancy, and to have intercourse at your most fertile times if you are trying to get pregnant.
I think that even women who want to remain on birth control should read this book - it is valuable to understand how your body works and why. For women who are breastfeeding, this book has a whole chapter on using your temp and mucous to ascertain whether your fertility has returned - an excellent tool since chemical birth control while breastfeeding is best avoided. For women who are experiencing infertility, charting your temps and mucous can help you discover why you aren't conceiving, and knowing this can make it easier to seek treatment.
There may be more thorough books on this topic out there, but I think this is one of the best basic ones. I recommend it highly.

Your Fertility Signals: Using Them to Achieve or Avoid Pregnancy Naturally Overview

Presented in question-and-answer format, one of the most straightforward self-help books on fertility aims to help couples achieve or prevent pregnancy without using contraceptives. It advocates not the outdated rhythm method, but quick, daily examinations of cervical mucus and body temperature to ascertain when the few days of fertility occur. Winstein also covers the practical aspects of sexual abstinence during the fertile period, breastfeeding's role in fertility, returning to normal cycles after using the pill, and how ovulation occurs. Assuming normal fertility, she yet includes an explanatory, alphabetical list of infertility problems. An accurate, lovingly illustrated handbook that does much to dispel the mystery and imagined difficulty centered around birth control. Further information, readings list, references, glossary, index.

Boost Your Fertility: New Solutions for Conceiving Quickly and Having a Healthy Pregnancy as Soon as Possible Review

This book was wonderful. I've been diagnosed with PCOS for almost 8 years but was not affected by any symptoms until we were not able to conceive. After reading this book, I kept to the strict diet and within a few weeks, my hormones were all within the normal range for the first time in my life! I felt better than I ever have and had more energy than I have in years. It is more costly than eating normally and takes so much more time to prepare meals but it's worth every effort! I conceived on my fourth cycle after starting the diet and have continued through the pregnancy. This was a much better route for me than getting on medications. I am so thankful for the all of the helpful chapters in this book!

The Fertility Diet: Groundbreaking Research Reveals Natural Ways to Boost Ovulation and Improve Your Chances of Getting Pregnant Review

This book taught me that, contrary to what many of us have been led to believe, fats are not evil. We women of fertile years NEED fat. Not too much, of course, but having enough is essential to ensure our bodies are working properly. My husband and I had been trying, unsuccessfully, to get pregnant for quite some time. I considered myself a healthy eater who led a healthy lifestyle. I had been a follower of a "clean" diet (See Tosca Reno's Eat-Clean Diet books--great for staying trim, and I still recommend them to people to teach them to avoid processed foods), and I exercised regularly, being a personal trainer as well. Reading this book opened my eyes to the need to incorporate more fats into my diet in order to boost my fertility. I ate ice cream, I drank milk that wasn't skim, and I followed other aspects of this "fertility diet" in the hopes I would prove the doctors (including the fertility specialists) wrong, that we COULD and WOULD get pregnant on our own.
I was almost at my wit's end. Since I had begun tweaking my diet as the book suggested, my period had returned so I thought I was having cycles again. However, the "experts" still said pregnancy was nearly impossible since there was such a ridiculously slim chance I could be ovulating. The last statistic I was given was that I had a slim 4-5% chance of getting pregnant without an egg donor only if I was on hormone replacement therapy, but zero chance without. Meanwhile, I skipped yet another cycle. I thought it simply meant they were right, that I was going through menopause at the age of 28. This time, however, I was pregnant! I had been on the fertility diet for about 2 months, and now, almost a year later, I have a very healthy, beautiful, 4-month old baby girl. Not only that, but my cycles have been fairly regular since having her. Before pregnancy, I could expect to get maybe 4 or 5 periods a year. I have high hopes that not only has this book helped us have a child when we thought the only way for us to be parents was through adoption or an egg donor, but that we can get pregnant again when the time is right.
Let me add that I had never begun taking fertility drugs of any sort. Each doctor I saw just ran tests and then sent me to yet another specialist. The last doctor who handed me the last statistic was only looking at test results from two and a half months prior to me seeing him and was waiting to run his own tests. He was so sure of his diagnosis of premature ovarian failure that he failed to run a pregnancy test to rule out that possibility! Had he run another test to check my hormone levels, I wonder what he would have found (other than the pregnancy).
If you are trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant, you MUST read this book!

The Fastest Way To Get Pregnant Naturally Review

I found a recent review that I thought was excellent by Vicky Collins of www.babylounge.com. It reads,
"If you're like most women, once you decide you want to be pregnant, you want it to happen immediately. If you fall into this category, then this book is for you. The Fastest Way to Get Pregnant Naturally is an essential book for every woman who yearns to earn the title of "mommy."
"This wonderful book is written by OB/GYN and fertility specialist, Dr. Christopher Williams. The first few chapters cover the preconception steps you should take to ensure maximum fertility, and a healthy baby. These chapters include everything from cutting out the obvious, like smoking, alcohol and caffeine, to taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid, stopping birth control, getting the proper nutrition, and getting to a healthy weight (not too thin or too heavy).
"After you read about what you need to do before trying to conceive, you get to the good stuff...predicting ovulation. Unlike the more traditional ways of detecting ovulation, such as basal body temperature and cervical mucus, this book encourages the use of the ovulation kits that are so readily available in your local drug store (the author explains why using the ovulation kits is an easier and a more reliable methods for detecting ovulation). In addition, the book goes into more detail on how to properly use the kits than I found in the pamphlet included in the kit itself.
"Before reading this book I didn't think ovulation kits (they run about $15-30 per month) were worth the cost. However, when I thought about the fact that I could probably conceive faster using the kits, $15 a month didn't seem like too much!
"An entire chapter is dedicated to what to do in the bedroom to maximize fertility. The usual tips such as optimal positions and frequency are mentioned. In addition, you might be surprised to learn that lubricants like K-Y jelly may kill sperm, and that electric blankets may decrease fertility and increase the rate of miscarriage.
"Other important chapters are dedicated to topics like the man's role in getting pregnant quickly (his nutritional, social, medications, and age do matter), and the age old question of whether you can choose the sex of your baby.
"This comprehensive book is a wonderful way to get a leg up on everything you need to do in order to ensure maximum fertility and be well on your way to the most joyful experience of your life...parenthood."
