The Belated Baby: A Guide to Parenting After Infertility Review

I read The Belated Baby in one sitting often with tears in my eyes. Reading it felt like sitting with a good friend who has felt the pain and disappointment all women feel who have struggled with infertility. As a hopeful, waiting adoptive mother-to-be, I found it particularly helpful in foreshadowing what may come after our much longed for baby finally arrives. In one excerpt the author describes herself sitting in a coffee shop when an expectant mom comes in and sits beside her. When the author feels her body stiffen but her heart soften, I felt hopeful that someday I too will feel that brand of genuine joy for the happiness of other women. Knowing that it is normal for the disappointment of infertility to persist even after the baby arrives is a good lesson and reading the book before parenthood for the still childless couple is a great way to prepare for the emotions that are sure to remain even after children. Those of us who are infertile are going to walk again someday, and the arrival of a baby helps us to do that, but most of us will always walk with just a little limp---it's the battle wound of what it took for us to get there. The book was hopeful and sensible and validates every feeling I have as someone who cannot create children. A must read.

The Belated Baby: A Guide to Parenting After Infertility Overview

Approximately 7.3 million American women have struggled with infertility. Most of them, whether or not they use fertility treatments, do not realize that when they have their baby (or babies) -- whether through birth or via adoption -- the echoes of their infertility will be felt long after they are living out their dream of having their own baby.
Jill S. Browning and Kelly James-Enger explain that infertility is a mind-set and that every woman who experiences infertility is forever changed, even when she eventually has the child she yearned for. When many women who have gone through fertility treatments describe their experience, they say it "abused their soul." The experience may have also hurt their relationship with their husband and sometimes permanently altered relationships with their extended families. Studies show that even after the desperation of infertility subsides, emotional wounds still fester and an asterisk accompanies her bundle of joy.
Infertile women often find themselves mentally unprepared for motherhood. They feel they have no right to complain about the frustration and confusion that all new sleep-deprived parents experience. After all, they worked so hard to have a baby and, moreover, spent thousands of dollars for costly procedures. They also may be conflicted about working, even if their families need the income. She's waited so long for this baby. How can she leave him or her to go back to work?
The Belated Baby supports the message these women need to hear. It guides readers through the transition from being an infertile patient to parenthood, and it reveals how infertility shapes them as a parent. It will also be a hopeful source for couples currently in the throes of infertility, offering encouragement that there is happiness and life after infertility.

The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Go Get Pregnant Review

I felt I had to respond after one person failed miserably in reading comprehension. First, in the beginning of the book Savage made the point and he and Terry had discussed infidelity and were committed enough to their relationship that that would not be enough to break them up. As to the claims about the birthmother being mentally ill, they took care to show that she wasn't. She was able to care for herself, make logical decisions and was sane enough to know that her chosen lifestyle made it impossible to be a good mother to her son, hence choosing adoption. And they didn't relocate to get away from her. They lived in Seattle and used an agency there. She was currently living in Portland, but since she regularly moved from city to city, it wasn't an issue. In fact, those who bother to read the whole thing will discover a chapter in which they flew to L.A. to meet with her after the birth and to allow the birthfather to see the baby. (And according to the legal agreement they signed, they can't keep her from seeing the kid a certain number of times a year, and Savage himself deplored the fact that some adoptive parents don't follow the signed agreements.) A lot of the other complaints seem based on the fact that the reviewer could not tell sarcastic humor from genuine sentiment. Savage is not a hearts&roses style writer. He's a hardcore cynic and likes making shocking jokes, like his fake birthmother letter in which he jests about having drug addicted friends babysit. For every time he made a joke about a baby as an expensive hobby, he also mentioned looking forward to being able to teach him to walk and talk and later watching his Little League games. Plenty of other writers have made similar jokes about their children - Erma Bombeck said she wanted to trade hers in for dogs, Bill Cosby has written about wanting to send his to jail for being annoying. It has nothing to do with how they actually parent - they're just trying for a laugh. Plus, if he really thought it was just a lark, would he and his boyfriend have gone through so much to adopt?
This book has left me much more optomistic about gay adoption, but pessimistic as to the literacy of people on the internet.

Do Your Own California Adoption: Nolo's Guide for Stepparents and Domestic Partners Review

This book is wonderful for anyone who wants to adopt their spouse's child and has the consent of the other bio-parent (or other stipulation such as the death of the bio-parent, etc.). It not only provides needed forms, but also has word-by-word examples of the documents you will need to type yourself (for me, that was actually fun!) Additionally, if you live in Los Angeles as I did during the process, it gives you special instructions for filing in L.A. county - very helpful! I had to pay only a $700 assessment fee and 2 or 3 small filing fees and the whole process, from filing the initial petition to the final hearing (which is especially enjoyable) was completed in under 4 months! And the experience brought me even closer to our 5 year old little girl as well as my wife! A lawyer quoted me legal fees of "$2,500 to $3,000, not including filing and assessment fees" before I found this book. You will not only save money, but come away with an amazing sense of accomplishment and a renewed appreciation for your family. I highly recommend this book!

Wanting Another Child: Coping With Secondary Infertility (Garland Reference Library of Social Science) Review

Harriet Fishman Simons's description of how it feels to have a child but be unable to have another exactly mirrored how I have felt, and I think the book was very perceptive in describing the unique sorrow that faces parents who want so much but cant have another child. Her description of the differences between how women and men deal with this problem is particularly good and corresponds to how I have felt and how other women I know have felt. I cried reading this book but found it cathartic. However, my one complaint about this book is the relative neglect is gives to the issue of secondary infertility stemming from multiple miscarriages rather than the failure to conceive. I have searched for books that deal with this issue--and I think this is not uncommon for women suffering from secondary infertility. The issue of whether to keep trying, the fact that in most cases the doctors cant give you any reason for the failure, the toll that miscarriage places on your marriage and on raising your child, arent really dealt with except for passing references.

Wake Up Little Susie: Single Pregnancy and Race Before Roe v. Wade Review

I am a reunited Mom and as I was reading this book I felt the shame begin to lift from my soul. I have been asking myself why I didn't fight harder to keep my baby and after reading "Wake up Little Susie" I see there was a conserted agenda of our government, religious institutions, and those of the adoption industry to separate our children from us in the name of what others deemed was for the best.In truth it was both a punishment for female sexuality and also we were used to provide children for couples unable to procreate. The problem is those same people did not have to live with the wounds of us Moms and our children when they decided that unmarried woman were not worthy to parent their own flesh and blood in the marketting of our children.I am freeing my shame and I am now putting it where it belongs on those that profited off of the hearts of woman and children. Shame on them! And thank you Rickie Solinger for your honest account on what was done to us . Linda Webber

The Girls Who Went Away: The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe v. Wade Review

This book was recommended to me by one of the subjects within. As I am an adoptee who was surrendered in the mid 1960's I found the books revelations both informative and unsettling. I had never put the picture in my head of how socially motivated and financially interested some of the adoption agencies of the time were nor the gamut of emotions felt by these birthmothers. This is well researched from a historical standpoint as well as a facinating read delving into the very human feelings shared by those in the triad of adoption. Feelings, I might add, that are not well understood by those outside of this subculture. I have recommended this book to several counselor friends of mine and would do the same for anyone who may find themselves across the couch from persons involved in the adoption process. Mrs. Fessler's book flows very smoothly and is quite an easy read. The books stories are filled with the heart wrenching fear, dissapointment, guilt, anguish and uncertainty felt by many birthmothers but the ultimate message is one of underlying love, resolution and final completion. My final thoughts were of hope. Hope for governmental reform in its policies, hope for institutional reform in their practices and proceedures and hope for adoptee and birth parent alike in the illimination of uncertainties and for final completeness.

The Girls Who Went Away: The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe v. Wade Overview

In this deeply moving and myth-shattering work, Ann Fessler brings out into the open for the first time the astonishing untold history of the million and a half women who surrendered children for adoption due to enormous family and social pressure in the decades before Roe v. Wade. An adoptee who was herself surrendered during those years and recently made contact with her mother, Ann Fessler brilliantly brings to life the voices of more than a hundred women, as well as the spirit of those times, allowing the women to tell their stories in gripping and intimate detail.

Adoption Wisdom: A Guide to the Issues and Feelings of Adoption Review

I am just finishing "Adoption Wisdom". It is probably the best I've read.
It should be required reading for all members of the triad. Since my son
found me last year, I have read about 20 books and this is one of the few
that reaches all of the members. I certainly wish I had read it years ago.
Thanks.

The Infertility Survival Guide: Everything You Need to Know to Cope with the Challenges while Maintaining Your Sanity, Dignity, and Relationships Review

I found this book to be discouraging and depressing. Infertility is a miserable experience, and reviewing the bad feelings associated with it is counter-productive. We know we're not alone and we know we're on an emotional rollercoaster, now someone offer us something useful. This book reviews all of these feelings in great detail, making one dwell on the helplessness of the situation. The information on handling family and friends was helpful, but overall, I would not recommend this book to anyone dealing with infertility; please find another source of support.

Adoption Separation: Then and now Review

Thank you Evelyn for writing this book and letting us tell our stories. The history of how unwed mothers were treated in the twentieth century needs to be told. People have no idea of the shame and guilt that society, teachers, priest, doctors, etc. bestowed on us. We were hidden away in "unwed mothers homes" until we gave birth and signed the baby over for adoption. We were told that we would forget about this baby and go on with our life as if nothing happened. I gave birth to my son in 1965 and I never once forgot about him. Holidays and his birthday were a silent hell for me...they still are.
I was sent to the Florence Critton Home in Toledo, Ohio. I would like to hear from the girls that were there with me. I am Linda Lou.

Adoption Separation: Then and now Overview

This is Evelyn Robinson's fourth book about adoption. For the first time, Evelyn has produced a book which includes the work of others. Forty-five parents who have lost children to adoption in seven different countries were generous enough to allow Evelyn to publish their narratives. Their stories make poignant and, at times, harrowing reading. Their contributions represent adoption as it was then (ie between 1958 and 1989) and Evelyn has added some information and some of her own opinions on adoption as it is now. Together they provide compelling and thought-provoking reading and will contribute in a very positive way to validating the feelings of those who have experienced adoption separation and educating the community around those experiences and the resulting outcomes.

INFERTILITY SUCKS is right! My dh & I wasted so much time and money trying to have our first child. My gyno said she was an inferitlity specialist - HA! Misinformation at every turn. Run around from insurance company, which we had to argue with to even get meds covered. I found the section for men particularly well written. A friend told me to get this book since we are trying for #2. A big THANK YOU TO the Author! READ THIS BOOK FIRST IF NEED HELP TO GET PREGNANT!

Stories of Adoption: Loss and Reunion (Family & Childcare) Review

Eric Blau has done a superb job in introducing his readers to the often heart-breaking world of relinquishment, search and reunion. Touching insights are given into the lives of birthmothers and adoptees alike: the pain that some birthmothers still feel years after relinquishment is palpable; the isolation and shame that many felt while living in a time when being an unwed mother was a disgrace; the lack of support from family and friends; and the lies they were told about how easily they would be able to get on with their lives. Blau balances these stories with those of other birthmothers who are not so emotionally attached -- who feel that they have made the right decision and have moved on with their lives, and never looked back. Through Blau's deftly handled interviews the reader gains fascinating insights into the lives of adoptees, some of whom never knew they were adopted until adulthood; others who struggle with mixed race adoptions, and finally, those who search but will likely never find. Blau compliments the writing with black and white photographs, some of which are often stark and revealing. This is an excellent book, particularly good for sharing with others who have no insights to adoption and who have expressed an interest to learn more, but not to "study" the subject. As a reunited birthfather, I highly recommend it.

The Adoption Decision: 15 Things You Want to Know Before Adopting Review

While this book is a good resource for people considering adoption as the way to build their families, it has a decidedly Christian point of view. The author surrounds the adoption decision in biblical references which may put off non-Christians or those for whom Christianity is not their prime tool for decision making. There are Bible verses sprinkled throughout and many of the anecdotes have a strong Christian message. The author does have much good information, offers lots of excellent resources and offers good advice about how to prepare for the home study and how to select an adoption agency. As an adoptive parent myself, I particularly enjoyed her suggestions about how to deal with nosy strangers and less-than-tactful family and friends. She is also very realistic about what to expect as an adoptive parent and how adoption should not be a substitute for missionary work.
I would recommend this book to my Christian clients with little reservation. However, for another non-religious perspective, I would highly recommend "Is Adoption Right for You? by Christine Adamec which offers much of the same information with a more ecumenical approach.

Pregnant with Hope: Good News for Infertile Couples Review

My wife and I battled infertility for 2 years. Our story is the basis for Chapter 9.
We had a very happy ending - twins who are now 2.
The journey is very hard. If you or a friend are dealing with infertility the best thing to realize is you are not alone. The stories of the people in this book will help. They are all decent, committed people. No one expected to face this issue. No one had any "training."
Everything in the book is true - I was in the group and saw the good times as well as the sad times.
It worked out for everyone in our prayer class - whether by adoption or child birth. We all had our prayers answered. That is a powerful fact.
I am happy to recommend this book. I hope that it will help a lot of people.

Dear God, Why Can't I Have a Baby: A Companion Guide for Women on the Infertility Journey Review

I love the way this book is written in 21 chapters that follow infertility as it actually happened to us and unfortunately, to many of our friends. From Chapter One where we decided "It's time to have a baby", through to Chapter Four - "Paralyzing Shock" of the diagnosis, to other roads of "Starting Treatments", "Making it Through the Bad Days" & "Grieving the Losses". You'll laugh, cry, and more importantly, know you are not alone on this amazingly difficult journey!

Dear God, Why Can't I Have a Baby: A Companion Guide for Women on the Infertility Journey Overview

Dear God, Why Can't I Have a Baby? provides women and ''couples-in-waiting'' with tools, direction, guidance, hope, and encouragement not to lose faith in God, or in each other, as they strive to share their love with a child.Rachel's cry of barrenness in Genesis 31:1, ''Give me children, or I'll die!'' is a wail that still echoes around the world, as one in six couples experience infertility. Infertility statistics are staggering: nearly 6.1 million women and 2.1 million married couples in the United States will experience difficulty having a child.Onlookers, and sadly even churches, often treat these ''empty arms'' couples with indifference, platitudes, criticism, or minimize the pain of miscarriages and stillborn babies. Couples struggling with infertility say they often feel alone and ostracized in their own churches and families. As a result, many infertile couples grow desperate, and some like Rachel, even feel suicidal when denied the one dream they have had since childhood-having a baby. This book seeks to ease readers' pain and accompany them on their infertility journey by offering: companionship, a place to cry, a way to journal and keep records, and most importantly, the strengthening of their faith in God.

I'm Pregnant... Now What Review

When Ruth Graham, daughter of Billy and sister to Anne and Franklin, learned that her 16-year-old daughter Windsor was pregnant, she hopped aboard an emotional roller coaster.
"I was both angry at Windsor, wanting to shake her, and yet compassionate, longing to hold her and make everything all right. She could not seem to see that I was trying to help. Worn out with the tension between needing to be wise and wanting to wash my hands of it all, I wanted to escape. And yet there was no place far enough away to remove the knots in my stomach, the anxiety in my mind and the ache in my heart."
This kind of honesty characterizes her new book, co-authored with clinical psychologist Sara Dormon. A specialist in dealing with crisis pregnancies, Dormon provides solid advice to both young mothers-to-be and the people who surround them at the end of each chapter. And while the perspectives of several women who have dealt with their own unplanned pregnancies or those of loved ones are included in the book, it's Ruth and her daughter Windsor (who might also deserve an author credit) who provide the book's heart and soul. Taking turns, they detail the difficult decisions and steps that had to be made when Windsor got pregnant, not just once, but twice, as a teenager.
Here, they each write about Ruth's decision not to provide a home for Windsor and her baby during the first pregnancy:
Ruth: "To help with making so many decisions with far-reaching consequences, I found that I needed someone to talk to --- someone wise and grounded. I chose to go to a local pastor for advice. He raised issues I hadn't thought of: the deeper questions of motivations, ego and spiritual components. He probed to find out if I thought God was calling me to raise the baby with Windsor. He counseled me to pray about what God would have me do.
"My commonsense conviction was that Windsor was not ready to be a parent. And I knew that parenting wouldn't make her grow up. I wanted her to be able to finish high school unencumbered with responsibility for a child. When I took the pastor's counsel and prayed about it, I felt I could not take responsibility for Windsor's life and its consequences, but that she had to face those herself. I felt that stepping in and raising the baby in my home was not best for the baby, Windsor or me. I had to trust God with the results of my decision."
Windsor: "When my mother made up her mind that she would have no part in helping me raise this baby it forced me to have to think. Of course I kept trying to change my mother's mind, but she wouldn't budge. I had to ask the practical questions: What was I going to do? Where would I live? How would I support myself? In my heart I already knew that I couldn't raise this baby alone, but I felt that if I admitted that, it would mean I had failed again.
"Every day there was an emotional battle going on inside of me. Every day I was torn between my desires to mother this baby or to give my child a better life ... My mother and I were very much at odds with each other. Abandonment isn't a strong enough word to describe how I felt. When she informed me of her decision to not help me with my child I felt helplessly alone. It was a different kind of lonely, more like drowning where no one can hear you calling for help."
The tension and distress between Ruth and Windsor as they struggle to figure out how each of them will deal with this pregnancy is not a pretty picture. But this is a pretty good indication that these women are telling the truth without sugarcoating it. And this is just the kind of straightforward talk that women and girls dealing with crisis pregnancies need to hear.
Windsor decided to release her first baby to adoptive parents, but she kept the second child. However, only cursory attention is given to the second decision. The bulk of the material in this book is about adoption --- why and when it's a good option, how to go about finding adoptive parents, and especially, how hard it is to give away your child. The emphasis on and advocacy for adoption is so pervasive that the book could have been titled "You're Pregnant? Consider Adoption."
Indeed, adoption is a beautiful decision for both a birth mother without options and an adoptive family. As an alternative to abortion, adoption is clearly the more loving and healthy approach to a crisis pregnancy. And that is a worthy goal of the book --- to present adoption as a viable alternative to young women who would consider abortion because they can't take care of a child on their own and don't have a support structure to help.
Still, as I read this book, I was frequently frustrated that Windsor herself didn't have a support structure that would help her raise her child. It's incredibly pompous of a book reviewer to second-guess the heart-rending decision made by Ruth not to open her home and reorder her life around her grandchild. However, I do think it's worthwhile to mention the idea of a community --- whether it's family, friends, church members, or any combination of the above --- coming together to support a young women in such a way that she is able to continue on with her life, now as a mother, in a holistic way. By all accounts, adoption creates a wound that never heals. Sometimes this wound is an easy tradeoff when compared to the suffering that might be caused by other options. But if it's at all possible for a mother to keep and raise her child in a Godly, loving and supportive environment, how much sacrifice should the body of Christ be willing to make to facilitate that wholeness?
I don't pose this question lightly. My own family and I have had to grapple with it on a very personal level. And just as I'm PREGNANT...NOW WHAT? focuses primarily on the pros and cons of adoption, a similar book might be written about the pros and cons of creating that support structure to allow a young woman to keep her child.
So while it's not a thorough exploration of all the options open to young women facing crisis pregnancies, I'M PREGNANT...NOW WHAT? is still an important and valuable resource for the young women themselves and for those who would prayerfully support these mothers, whatever decisions they make.

The Empty Picture Frame: An Inconceivable Journey Through Infertility Review

I read Jenna's book in two hours last night, I couldn't put it down. It made me feel nauseous, terrified, relieved, validated, and as she so eloquently put it, just simply "sad for myself". It rolled me back through time, over the past seven bumpy years of my marriage that have been oh so similar to Jenna and Mike's story.
The most important thing that this book has done for me, and I hope for all those who come across it, is to FINALLY UNDERSTAND that infertility is a disease.
A disease. I woke up with that word in my mind this morning. I get it. It is not my fault, not my husband's, not the millions of things that I have wondered about over the years. Karma? No. A lack of positive thinking? No. Not enough organic food? No.
Exquistely painful and misunderstood? Yes.
Infertility is a disease and "The Empty Picture Frame" brings that fact public. This book will help to remove the stigma and taboo that are associated with infertility in North America and for that I am grateful.

Girls in Trouble: A Novel Review

Caroline Leavitt -the author of this book is one girl who is not in trouble. Her sensitive portrayal of a birth mother and an adoptive mother and the tragedy and escasty of what brings them together and then drives them apart is an outstanding accomplishment. Managing to never dismiss or diminish the emotions of any of the so true to life characters in this novel, Leavitt keeps the reader engrossed and caring, and at least for this reader, occassionally crying.
Leavitt, author of seven previous novels, wings her way effortlessly through a laybrinth of emotion that never gets cloying as it illuminates the conflicts of the human heart.
Well done. A breakout novel if there ever was one.

But I Don't Feel Too Old to Be a Mommy: The Complete Sourcebook for Starting (and Re-Starting) Motherhood Beyond 35 and After 40 Review

This encouraging, uplifting book is is written by a woman who became a mother to a gorgeous Russian-born boy later in her own life (a photo of the two of them is on the back cover; he is a cutie). The book is better-suited to someone who is thinking about becoming a mother rather than for someone who is pregnant or has otherwise decided to become a mother. It is a supplement to, but not a substitute for, a good pregnancy guide -- it doesn't have pictures of what your belly will look like at any given time or what to do about morning sickness & such. The author emphasizes the positive aspects of older motherhood -- the wealth of experience we have, how healthy we are, how patient & self-confident we are, the advantages we can give to our children, how having children keeps us young. She provides a list of 32 questions to thing about before you decide to embark on motherhood -- they're all thought-provoking & well worth spending time on. She includes quotes from a number of older mothers (and stepmothers) discussing the experiences. She discusses ways of becoming a mother (the old standard, infertility treatments, adoption, surrogacy, even step-parenting). One thing I particularly like about the book is the author's focus on maternal health & fitness -- for the child's sake. Twenty-something-moms may take their own youth & health for granted in a way that we forty-something-moms can't really afford to do. Overall, a good resource, particularly for those contemplating later-in-life motherhood.

But I Don't Feel Too Old to Be a Mommy: The Complete Sourcebook for Starting (and Re-Starting) Motherhood Beyond 35 and After 40 Overview

The traditional childbearing ages for women have been 20-29. Today, however, the trend to later childrearing is significant, with the numbers of mothers over the age of 35 having grown 75 percent in the last decade, while the numbers in the traditional ages continue to decline. From celebrities to the woman next door, later childrearing is no flash-in-the-pan fad "and isn't going to subside; future trends only show women will continue to delay motherhood," according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

But I Don't Feel Too Old to Be a Mommy! is the first and only book to fully address the concerns of the ever-growing but greatly ignored audience of literate, educated women who have delayed motherhood. In this comprehensive work, women who are considering parenting in their 30s, 40s and later-whether for the first time or starting over-will find all the information they need to make informed choices.

Author Doreen Nagle, herself a first-time mom over 40, details the risks, rewards, rumors and resources-from making the decision to start a family, to every imaginable way to get there, to the realities of motherhood beyond 35 and 40. Issues covered include infertility, pregnancy, surrogacy, adoptions, the pros and cons of later motherhood, single parenting, and financial and career considerations. Complete with quotes from medical experts, later-in-life moms and their kids, this one-stop book will calm the doubts and fears of women considering motherhood after 35 and beyond 40 by providing supportive yet realistic information.

When Empty Arms Become a Heavy Burden: Encouragement for Couples Facing Infertility Review

Sandra Glahn, former RESOLVE board member, transforms long-term pain into heartening encouragement as she shares her decade-long struggle with infertility. Intimately and personably written, When Empty Arms Become aHeavy Burden delivers solid facts and detailed information. With moments of true-to-life humor, it addresses the moral, marital and spiritualchallenges involved in the struggle to have children.
Giving the topic a unique perspective, Glahn has teamed up with co-author,William Cutrer, M.D., a physician who also holds a graduate-level theology degree. Using numerous case histories as well as Glahn's personal testimony, they provide knowledgeable advice and answers to many of the key questions infertility patients ask. They focus much of their efforts on the emotional and spiritual struggles, though they also detail medical issues.
The book begins with a focus on dynamics in the marriage relationship, discussing the different ways wives and husbands typically handle the stress and grieving process: "Why do I feel like I'm going crazy?" "How do we keep romance alive?" The authors provide appropriate (sometimes amusing) responses to well-meaning friends and family who just can't say anything right. Using examples and insights from the Bible, they address the painful question so many of us ask, "Why,God?"
The book ends with several chapters devoted to the latest high-tech fertility treatments, including donor insemination, donor eggs and surrogacy, as well as the ethical considerations involved. Secondary infertility, adoption, and the option of living childfree are also addressed. Each chapter concludes with a list of thought-provoking questions for couples' discussion. To help those who desire to personally research certain issues, the authors also provide a list of resources for further reading. Of particular interest are the on-line resources they include.
Weaving logic and emotion, facts and feelings, Glahn and Cutrer send a message of encouragement and hope to those who ask "What if God never gives us children?"

The Sins of the Fathers: The Law and Theology of Illegitimacy Reconsidered Review

I purchased this book because I am an Adoptee Rights Advocate. As the laws Adoptee Rights Advocates are concerned about were *originally* shaped by an effort to cover up illegitimacy, it behooves me to read anything that might educate me on the history and laws of illegitimacy, especially those that shaped law in the U.S.
This is an excellent and well researched book. It was information-packed and I found myself having to stop and re-read certain portions several times to absorb it all.
As educational as it was, I found myself disagreeing with the final chapter. I do not think that adoption, abortion, and illegitimacy are as directly related as people generally tend to think. I do not think that adoption is a solution to issues that cause women to choose or consider abortion. I do not think that illegitimacy and out of wedlock birth are issues in themselves. I think how society and policy treat women, that leads to chronic poverty of single mothers, are the problems. There is nothing inherently wrong with a woman bearing a child without being married and choosing to raise that child, except, she's violated that archaic gender "norm" of motherhood without legal subordination to a man (marriage). Public and agency policy has done everything it can throughout U.S. history to push hardship upon single, pregnant women. Yet, women bearing children without being married is what is still seen as the problem, rather than the way women in this situation have been treated. We need equality for women, not to continue to suggest that women who are not married should be encouraged to choose adoption. Adoption does not, can not, and will not solve all of our problems.
I would like to see continued study of illegitimacy and illegitimacy laws throughout the 50's to today (see Solinger and Fessler), as I disagree that the laws and stigmas of illegitimacy have lost their potency. Original Birth Certificate closure laws, based on illegitimacy, (see Wegar, Carpe, and Samuels) very much impact Adult Adoptees to this day and age. Policies and sentiment bent on shaming and punishing women who bore children outside of marriage have shaped current policies in adoption and views of women.

The Sins of the Fathers: The Law and Theology of Illegitimacy Reconsidered Overview

For nearly two millennia, Western law visited the sins of fathers and mothers upon their illegitimate children, subjecting them to systematic discrimination and deprivation. The graver the sins of their parents, the further these children fell in social standing and legal protection. While some reformers have sought to better the plight of illegitimate children, only in recent decades has illegitimacy lost its full legal sting. Yet the social, economic, and psychological costs of illegitimacy still remain high even in the liberal, affluent West. John Witte analyzes and critiques the shifting historical law and theology of illegitimacy. This doctrine, he argues, misinterprets basic biblical teachings on individual accountability and Christian community. It also betrays basic democratic principles of equality, dignity, and natural rights of all. There are no illegitimate children, only illegitimate parents, Witte concludes, and he presses for the protection and rights of all children, regardless of their birth status.
