This book is an amazing testament to the diversity of female sexual behavior and the lengths by which females can control who impregnates them. In American culture, we have this idea that females are sexually passive in contrast to the sexually active aggressive male. This book helps to blow that concept out of the water.

Female Control: Sexual Selection by Cryptic Female Choice Overview

A growing body of evidence has begun to reveal flaws in the traditional assumption of female passivity and lack of discrimination after copulation has begun. William Eberhard has compiled an impressive array of research on the ability of females to shape the outcome of mating. He describes studies of many different cryptic mechanisms by which a female can accept a male for copulation but nevertheless reject him as a father. Evidence from various fields indicates that such selectivity by females may be the norm rather than the exception. Because most post-copulatory competition between males for paternity is played out within the bodies of females, female behavior, morphology, and physiology probably often influence male success in these contests. Eberhard draws examples from a diversity of organisms, ranging from ctenophores to scorpions, nematodes to frogs, and crickets to humans.

Cryptic female choice establishes a new bridge between sexual selection theory and reproductive physiology, in particular the physiological effects of male seminal products on female reproductive processes, such as sperm transport, oviposition, and remating. Eberhard interweaves his review of previous studies with speculation on the consequences of this theoretical development, and indicates promising new directions for future research.

Great topic, well researched and well written. Sometimes funny. I learned a great deal about the details of the topic. Moreover, the book informs the political issues and climate of statehood for a fledgling nation at the most personal and intimate levels. I've read the other reader's review and can't imagine that the vituperative commentary is in any way suggested by the topic or the book itself. Perhaps a little New Haven vs. Cambridge rivalry. Hey, grow up! If you are a reader with an interest in how Jewish motherhood and Jewish statehood relate, read the book. If you are a kvetch, have some chicken soup and you'll feel better in the morning.

Reproducing Jews: A Cultural Account of Assisted Conception in Israel (Body, Commodity, Text) Overview

There are more fertility clinics per capita in Israel than in any other country in the world and Israel has the world's highest per capita rate of in-vitro fertilization procedures. Fertility treatments are fully subsidized by Israeli national health insurance and are available to all Israelis, regardless of religion or marital status. These phenomena are not the result of unusually high rates of infertility in Israel but reflect the centrality of reproduction in Judaism and Jewish culture.In this ethnographic study of the new reproductive technologies in Israel, Susan Martha Kahn explores the cultural meanings and contemporary rabbinic responses to artificial insemination, in-vitro fertilization, egg donation, and surrogacy. Kahn draws on fieldwork with unmarried Israeli women who are using state-subsidized artificial insemination to get pregnant and on participant-observation in Israeli fertility clinics. Through close readings of traditional Jewish texts and careful analysis of Israeli public discourse, she explains how the Israeli embrace of new reproductive technologies has made Jewish beliefs about kinship startlingly literal. Kahn also reveals how a wide range of contemporary Israelis are using new reproductive technologies to realize their reproductive futures, from ultraorthodox infertile married couples to secular unmarried women.As the first scholarly account of assisted conception in Israel, this multisited ethnography will contribute to current anthropological debates on kinship studies. It will also interest those involved with Jewish studies.

I'm about halfway through my maternity rotation and reading through the associated material and I've discovered that it is one of the most redundant textbooks I've yet encountered in my nursing school career. It also has an abundance of editing mistakes; so many that our professors have created a discussion board where we can mention these mistakes and they can confirm them. The mistakes range from minute flaws like "ml" instead of "mL" to referencing nursing care plans that are non-existent in the text. I am disappointed that my program has chosen such a poor text book and I can't wait to be done with it.

Thank you Evelyn for writing this book and letting us tell our stories. The history of how unwed mothers were treated in the twentieth century needs to be told. People have no idea of the shame and guilt that society, teachers, priest, doctors, etc. bestowed on us. We were hidden away in "unwed mothers homes" until we gave birth and signed the baby over for adoption. We were told that we would forget about this baby and go on with our life as if nothing happened. I gave birth to my son in 1965 and I never once forgot about him. Holidays and his birthday were a silent hell for me...they still are.
I was sent to the Florence Critton Home in Toledo, Ohio. I would like to hear from the girls that were there with me. I am Linda Lou.

Man of Means/Millionaires Pregnant Bride (Desire) Review

I have to disagree with most of the reviews written below. I believe this book was great. I'm also a big Diana Palmer fan and ive read my share of her stories. I think this one was sweet and both characters were strong, unlike other stories where the woman is incredibly fragile and weak.
Meredith lives a life who could break anyone if they werent strong enough, yet she is able to hold herself up without help. She even hides her real education as a nurse and accepts to live out in a tiny city. This time, the reader wasnt always being reminded of how innocent she was, how fragile, etc. This time she actually had a strong personality.
Rey is just like the other men in Palmer's stories...hes stubborn, "sexy", has his mind set on thinking the female is a "tramp", and does not want to get married. There wasnt really a change in the male character, so no big thing there. But, a good character overall.
Overall i think this story is great for so many reasons. If you want a different story, with strong characters, this one is the one.
I think the only thing that i agree on with the previous reviews is that you dont do CPR on someone who is alive....but you kind of overlook that since its not a medical text. However, correct information would have been nice.

I have a friend who will only allow himself to read one page a night when he's down to the last 15 pages of a really good book. I never could understand this practice before I read "The Bowl Is Already Broken." But, I confess, I couldn't do it. I greedily devoured every word.
Each character revels in and is held prisoner by his or her own obsessions. Even though the characters exist in the microcosm of museum life, this book is such a full story in the world. While revealing the inner workings of a museum, the author also unravels the stories of objects; the meaning expressed in the fabulous decorations of Chinese porcelains as well as their cultural and historical significance. But these descriptions are intertwined with the action, and add significantly to the depth of the characters and the plot. So, when the former director takes off on an archaeological expedition in central Asia, the worlds of art and politics collide. The politics work so well precisely because the author avoids being dull or preachy. This is a clever novel full of beauty and wit.

Take it Like a Mom Review

I have to say, I was impressed, no thoroughly entertained with this book the moment I started reading it. This is one of those books you can pick up and read and always be certain to find scenes any parent can relate to. Stiles perfectly captured everything about being a parent and being a mom. Readers will laugh and cry with her writing. I for one will look forward to reading anything new by Stiles. Until then, I am going to encourage anyone with kids, thinking about kids or have been around kids to read this book. A+ in my book!

Jane Review

Jane is a single American movie critic living in London in the early 70's. She is juggling three - count 'em - three lovers - a handsome black American professor, a titled Englishman and a burglar. From her loft apartment she deals with the difficulties of managing to keep the three of them apart while going to films and writing reviews. She tends to prefer to review the arty films rather than the more popular ones which her newspaper would prefer her critique. She also has a problem with the family of the titled English gentleman. At a dinner at the family seat she wonders if anyone has ever bothered to ask the fox what it thinks of the hunt. Her sense of humor is sharp and she has a keen eye for hypocrites. "Jane" is a terrific story of a woman on her own trying to live an independent life considered more suitable for a man. The writing is good, the characters entertaining and all too human and as the "plot thickens" and I won't divulge how, the reader is rooting for Jane to land on her feet. A thoroughly enjoyable story and I would love to know why it was never made into a move as advertised on the original book cover or why Dee Wells never followed this book with another.

A Girl Named Mister Review

If you've ever made a mistake in your life, completed some task that would make your parents cringe, you'll appreciate this book. Yes, it's written from a Christian point of view, but it's not overly done.
What I feel in M.R. is a young lady that is loved but wants, like all teenagers, more of everything. She doubts all beliefs that didn't originate from her young brain-just like many teenagers.
This book made me think back to my younger years: the good, the bad and the oh sooo ugly...
I loved the writing style. I loved this book in its totality.
Buy this book and give it to your mom for Christmas, your teenage daughter just because, the mom of a teenage daughter ....
On so many levels, this book is needed in many households.

The Pregnant Widow (Vintage International) Review

Martin Amis sets much of the action in THE PREGNANT WIDOW in a castle in Italy in the summer of 1970. There, Keith Nearing, Mart's young and literate protagonist, cohabits with Lily (his girlfriend), the nubile Scheherazade (Lily's best friend), and the sexy Gloria, the girlfriend of Scheherazade's uncle.

Initially, Mart uses these characters to write a hilarious parody of "The English Novel", with the innocent Keith infatuated with the beautiful Scheherazade, as he works his way through PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, VANITY FAIR, JANE EYRE, and so on. Not only does this portion of TPW address the complications of courtship and codes of behavior, as do the classic novels that Keith reads; but the castle where Mart sets the story has rich widows, wealthy but imperfect male suitors, orphans, and other elements of this genre. Altogether, the comedy in this section of TPW is absolutely first rate, while reaching its high point in the terrific chapter "The Waiting".

But then, Keith has a sudden and unexpected sexual encounter that "rearranges his feelings." At this point, Keith's life stops feeling like an "English Novel." Initially, he finds that Kafka's "Metamorphosis" captures his guilty reaction to change. But soon, Keith inhabits a carnal mindset, where Mart identifies the genre as a "pornotheological farce". Once again, Amis is hilarious, although his subject has shifted from sensitive pursuit to hapless predation.

In TPW, Amis follows Keith from innocence to carnality to thoughtful maturity, where he has fathered four children and had three wives. While Keith's adventures in romance and carnality are hilarious, he is also a personality that Amis uses to explore the sexual revolution and its effect on women. Here, his female characters range from "old regime" to Keith's sister Violet, who "has sex like a boy," which is the possibility all the females in TPW try to address. The pregnant widow, by the way, is Mart's metaphor for the widow who carries her baby through the revolution, birthing her baby into a new world, even though her own sensibilities are influenced by the past.
In many ways, Mart shows himself at his best in TPW. Besides hilarity, disciplined structure, and a confrontation with complex issues, this novel features consistently superior writing. This includes such tropes as "...the ethereal castanets of the butterflies" and his description of flies as "up close, armoured survivalists with gas-mask faces."
Likewise, there are numerous longer passages of insight, which are also funny or beautiful. On this family forum, Keith's description of walking behind a herd of goats may not be welcome. But, here are some of his thoughts about dreams.
"...why couldn't you smoke in dreams? You could smoke almost anywhere you liked--except in churches and rocket-refuelling bays, and most hospital delivery rooms, and so on. But dreams were non-smoking. Even when the situation would normally demand it, after moments of great tension (after a chase sequence, say, or while recovering from some horrific transformation); or after a long episode of strenuous swimming, or strenuous flying; or after a sudden bereavement, a sudden subtraction; or after successful sexual intercourse. And successful sexual intercourse in dreams, though rare, was not unknown. But you couldn't smoke in dreams."

I must confess, however, that I didn't quite get Keith's relationship with the young Conchita. Is it as terrible as I suspect? On the other hand, I thought that Amis worked his Muslim females into his story with great skill and plausibility. Finally, I was grateful that Amis defined boredom, which he calls "the absence of a wish." For steady readers of Amis (this is my 13th Amis book) or fans of Bellow, this is a gift.
Highly recommended.

I am glad that Wendy Luttrell wrote this book. I enjoyed 'listening' to the teen girls stories and enjoyed viewing their collages that represented themselves. However, being a black female, I didn't learn anything new about black teenage girls. However, I think it is a GREAT book for people who work in the field of Education and honestly don't understand a) the complex identity process that working class african american girls go through in America (let alone being pregnant) and b) how to be conscious of their own 'whiteness' and Euro-Anglo centric view of 'deviance'. I got the feeling that this book was intended more for white middle class educators who teach or may teach working class african american pregnant teenagers. I am glad that Wendy depicted the pregnant girls in a "positive" light. Wendy clearly states that she doesn't want to stereotype. She explains to the reader that she herself is coming from a white middle class background. That acknowledgement of her 'whiteness' and white privilege are important in understanding who she is as a researcher. I like the fact she explains to the reader how she did her research and her honest directness of telling the audience how she felt while doing her field research and what challenges her own identity created while trying to connect to and understand the 50 individual pregnant girls she interacted with. Overall, it is great to see that she does not construct teenage pregnancy as 'deviant' behavior. The girls in this book are HUMANIZED.

Not My Daughter Review

NOT MY DAUGHTER is a riveting story that confronts a subculture of teenage girls and their pact to become pregnant. Barbara Delinsky's tale is set in Zaganack, a small coastal town in Maine that serves as a microcosm of the social, political, economic and cultural landscape of our times. A company town for an upscale retailer, Zaganack is an old township of family ties and deep communal relations, and its values are reflected in that understanding. But this town will be challenged by the age-old question: What makes someone a "good mother?"
Susan, Kate, Sunny and Pam have been friends for a long time. As part-time co-workers, they even created PC Wool, a subdivision of the local retailer specializing in dyed wools, designs and patterns. Just as the mothers are close to one another, so are their four daughters, Lily, Mary Kate, Jess and Abby. The girls are all intelligent, popular and outstanding high school seniors whose mothers are anticipating them going forward with their education when they graduate.
At a mother-daughter evening out, Lily announces to her mother that she is pregnant. Susan, who became a single parent as a teen, is confounded by the news. She also learns that Lily is not the only one expecting --- Mary Kate and Jess are as well. Susan informs Lily's father, Rick, who has always been part of their lives but upon hearing this news decides to become more involved. When it is discovered that there has been a pact between the girls to become pregnant, the characters of each of the mothers and their relationships with their daughters are brought into question. How could this have happened to their smart and wonderful children?
For Susan, the high school principal, Lily's pregnancy has unintended consequences. Susan is faced with defending herself as both mother and principal as she too was an unmarried teenage mother. Her core principles are put to the test as she is criticized for being an unconvincing role model. Some parents and others question if this is history repeating itself.
As the town, school and businesses try to figure out the why, where and who surrounding the pregnancy pact, there are increasing calls for Susan's resignation. Will she keep her job? What about the girl's lives, their friendships and their babies? Is marriage something for all of them to consider? Each mother and daughter must evaluate their bond to one another and the new lives growing inside the young women.
Barbara Delinsky's latest novel reminds this reviewer just how powerful a story --- even a fictional one --- can be. She has captured through her characters and their difficulties some of the social and cultural fabric of our times. This tale reflects the struggles that teen pregnancy creates for the mother-daughter bond, female and family relationships, and their professional and community lives. Delinsky's characters are like friends you might know, and with her uncanny ability to tell a story, you won't be able to wait to turn the page.
With realistic dialogue, credible characters and defining values, NOT MY DAUGHTER is one worth bringing to your book club or using in a discussion with family and friends.

The Sex Lives of Teenagers: Revealing the Secret World of Adolescent Boys and Girls Review

Unfortunately, this kind of book--the therapist
generalizes his/her most disturbed teenage client cases into a
dire commentary on all youth--is becoming an epidemic. This
book is not a useful basis for understanding young people.
Rather, it is part of the professional sensationalism and denial
that helps make America one of the riskiest Western nations to
live in.
First of all, Dr. Ponton is both unfair and unscientific.
Suppose I culled some lurid cases of psychotherapists' sexually
exploiting patients and compiled them into a book, "The Sex
Lives of Psychiatrists." Such a book might depict modern
therapists as uniquely dangerous perverts the rest of us should
fear. Would that be accurate or fair? No. It would be an
example of what social scientists term as fallacious "selection
bias:" a grossly unfair smear on an entire group based on the
misdeeds of a few of its most disturbed number. Now, Dr.
Ponton, and readers and reviewers who seem to worship this
kind of book as "realism:" how is what she does to teenagers
any different?
Second, Dr. Ponton's comments on youth sexuality are
blatantly inaccurate. She claims that today's teenagers "are
taking greater risks" with sex than past generations. Not true.
The latest National Center for Health Statistics data shows that
teens today are less likely to get pregnant, less likely have
babies or abortions, and less likely to contract STDs today than
teens of 25 to 30 years ago. Further, teens who do get pregnant
tend to be older (more are 18 or 19, rather than 12-17) today
than back then.
Third, she blames the easy targets such as media images
of sex and innate teenage risk-taking for adolescent sexual
problems. What evasion. Surely, in her work in HIV treatment,
Dr. Ponton noticed that HIV-positive youths are not a
cross-section of the average teenage population, but
overwhelmingly are extremely poor, usually homeless
prostitutes forced into "survival sex" with adult clients to obtain
money, food, shelter, and protection. It's depressing that
in the few instances in which Dr. Ponton's book relates adult
sexual abuses, solicitations, and harassments toward youths,
those who seem eager to believe any debauchery among teenagers
dismiss and deny them.
The fact is that exhaustive clinical testing has found
HIV infection rates on college campuses are almost zero and,
among teens in general, are very low. However, HIV-positive
levels run as high as one in six destitute runaway and homeless
youths, which is why HIV is dozens of times more common
among African American teen girls than among the more
privileged, mostly white youths Dr. Ponton sees. Unhealthy
adult sexual behaviors and rampant youth poverty (not
race)--and not "teenage risk taking"--are the markers of high
rates of unwanted pregnancy, sexually-transmitted disease, and
AIDS among the most vulnerable fraction of young people.
When are professionals such as Dr. Ponton going to face their
responsibility to stop selling books with popular, salacious
kid-sex tales and unwarranted fears about "youth today," and
instead confront readers and policy makers with the unpopular,
real risks our adult society imposes on its young people?

One word; Hilarious! I loved this book! She is a pro! There are a lot of lol pages in this book.... Mothers will especially enjoy this book... You'll go like 'Oh I've been there, yelled at that, showed that, smelled that,...' I love the way she writes. You can not put the book down not only because it is really good but because you can not stop reading her wonderful writing. She could write a novel about clouds and you would still read it with a smile on your face to the end at one sitting.
This book is about Izzy coming to a point in her life that everything seems like falling apart. She lost her job, she had a baby at the age of 39 and her best friend is getting divorced and telling her that husbands are turning wives in to bitches. It is not the '7 Year Itch' you get she says it is becoming a 7 year bitch. From that point and on she starts questioning her life. Is she happy with her husband who can seem never to make one thing right? She absolutely adores her newborn. He is the new man in her life. When she feels bored with her life an old flame starts to sparkle. Should she follow him or just stay where she is and try to be happy with what she has? All the questions she has are answered at the end. You won't be disappointed!

I really enjoyed this book! The first review almost says it all, but I just wanted to add that although there may not have been a book devoted to the subject of pregnancy and body image, I feel that the subject is talked about enough for me to be almost tired of it. This book, however, approaches the issues in a new light and really made me feel like I could finally release my pregnancy related (and even non-pregnancy related) body issues. It's the way the book is written and the experiences shared within the book that made me feel empowered. I also want to add that when I read the book, I was about a year out from having my second child, and I still found this book extremely helpful. So, although the title references "pregnancy," it's really a book for pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and post-pregnancy (even years after your last child). Give it a try. It's a quick read and you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

If you've already read What To Expect and found yourself saying "Okay, but why?", this book has some answers (and provokes more questions). This book, rather than a pregnancy guide, is a combined science and history of how the information in our current pregnancy literature came to be there, and what we might see in the future. The topic of fetal origins is fascinating, but this book isn't a "pregnancy book" like one might expect; I would compare many of the topics and ideas to "Freakonomics". It's a great book for scientifically minded moms- and dads-to-be to read and discuss together.
When I first picked up this book, written about pregnancy by an expectant mother, I expected to put it down and want to purge my cupboards of all foods artificial, buy an air purifier, and join a gym, but the author manages to keep all preachiness and judgement out of her writing, and I simply feel informed and intrigued, eager to follow fetal origins research as the field becomes more mainstream.
