Asking About Sex & Growing Up (revised edition): A Question-and-Answer Book for Kids Review

Out of the huge pile of "sex ed" books that I scanned through, this one was the best for my family's needs.
It is comprehensive: it hits almost every sex-related question that a kid could think of.
I also liked that it was realistic--kids hear about things like homosexuality and masturbation and "the pill", etc. and I liked how she addressed them.
(But the previous reviewer is correct: if you are very conservative in your views, you probably will not like her coverage of the more controversial items.)
I also liked that it's for both boys and girls, because I'm sure they wonder about what the other gender is experiencing as they mature.
Also, it has some illustrations, but there aren't lots of silly cartoons. A pre-teen isn't going to think this is a "kids book"--they'll take it seriously.
Bottom line: if you are terrified about having "the talk" with your kid, this book does a nice job of covering "the facts", then you can encourage questions and discussion afterwards.

Susan Crosby has delivered another wonderful book. I love it! Keri Overton had a one night stand with Jake McCoy but the one night is at the end of several during a kidnapping in South America. Was it a life affirming experience or could it have been love at first sight?

Keri arrives in Jake's small hometown and presents herself as his love and carrying his baby--his family takes her in but they haven't heard from Jake for months now and are very concerned but are looking forward to the baby. What will happen when he returns?
What a wonderful love story follows! It's the first of The McCoys of Chance City. I hate to tell more of the story as I found the book so interesting and I'm glad I didn't know any of the particulars, I think it added to my enjoyment. I hope you feel the same.

Fucking Daphne: Mostly True Stories and Fictions Review

As I understand it this anthology was put together after Daphne discovered herself starring in someone else's story in a book called Best American Erotica. As she states in the foreword of this book "In some story, some girl with my name is doing nasty things to some boy and the whole world can read it. With one hand, if they want." How can you not be intrigued by that statement? So she gathered a group of 29 writers and let them each tell their 'story' in this a kiss and tell book all about Daphne.
With 29 authors, 29 stories and only 260 pages, that makes some of these stories extremely short in length, but I didn't find any of them lacking. Like in most anthologies there were stories that I enjoyed far more than others, but on a whole I thought this collections was pretty darn good.
This book touches on many different subjects along with various sexcapades about hers truly. From graveyard romps, school girl sexual exploration/experimentation, strippers, bondage bunnies, lesbian and straight sex, there is no shortage of content. I found myself amazed at the uniqueness of each tale; each story contained a different Daphne. While there were always some similarities in her appearance each author managed to bring a little something more to the personality of the Daphne they wrote about.
A small sample of my favorites:
Dear Rachel, Please Read by Bucky Sinister - a humorous story told in the form of a letter from a man to his girlfriend - explaining in detail all the rumors she heard about him shagging Daphne were untrue.
The Meow by Justin Chin - a Daphne tale told to us by her cat, Moshpit. I though it was a clever story about how he protects her and guards her dreams.
What Daphne Thinks About In Bed by T.R. Moss - A story that centers on Daphne's solo lovin' and the fantasies she conjures in the process.
This isn't a book I could sit down and read from cover to cover, it is something that I picked up now and then and read a few stories at a time. There was maybe only one story I didn't care for out of the entire collection, the rest I either liked or really liked. It was interesting, to say the least, and while I am not sure how I stumbled upon this book, I am glad that I did. Daphne and her writer pals have created a very distinctive and pleasurable read.

This book was a disappointment to me. I was looking for a serious book on the subject of sex during pregnancy - especially regarding the mechanisms by which sex might feel different during this time. Instead, it stressed the importance of looking sexy instead of succombing to flannels, and other Cosmo type tips that you might find in one of their "30 ways to make your man hot" type of articles geared more for single twenty-somethings than women who are looking for this subject to be treated a bit more medically. One section is literally called, "maintaining your sex pot image." Really did not address my needs.

At one point in the narrative the author recommends that you read some of your wife's pregnancy books to get an idea what's going on. That is the best advice this book has to offer. Read another book.
I found most of what was advised here to be dated and not all that useful given the changing roles in modern America. Most men do not need to read hints on how to make canned soup and the recipe for "Tuna Chowder" made my wife's stomach churn when I read it out loud. The entire chapter on what to do while in the waiting room seems superfluous in contemporary society where the husband accompanies his wife during the delivery.
There are some good words of wisdom peppered through the 1950s mentality though. Let your wife know you love her and that she's attractive. Get involved with the process right from the start and... and.....
Sorry. That's about all I could glean from this thing. I just saved you ten bucks.

I bought this, along with several similar books, for my 11 year-old son. The Q&A format of this book made it easy to read, but many topics were handled in a clinical, vague manner and spent way too much time on trivial subjects (e.g., a whole chapter on "Crushes.") I actually checked the copyright, to see if it was written in the '50's. (It's 1988.) I was very troubled by the section, "What Happens if a Young Girl Gets Pregnant?" It ignored the boy's role & responsibility, and glossed over the topic with vague statements such as: "Her whole life will change, and not usually for the better." And, "She may feel upset for a long time afterward." There's even a section, "Why Would a Girl Let Herself Get Pregnant?" which suggests "Sometimes a girl secretly wants to get pregnant..." The section ends with: "The surest way to prevent pregnancy is not to have intercourse." I found a much better book for my son: "What's Going on Down There." Silly title, but much more thorough, balanced and practical.

The Sex Lives of Teenagers: Revealing the Secret World of Adolescent Boys and Girls Review

Unfortunately, this kind of book--the therapist
generalizes his/her most disturbed teenage client cases into a
dire commentary on all youth--is becoming an epidemic. This
book is not a useful basis for understanding young people.
Rather, it is part of the professional sensationalism and denial
that helps make America one of the riskiest Western nations to
live in.
First of all, Dr. Ponton is both unfair and unscientific.
Suppose I culled some lurid cases of psychotherapists' sexually
exploiting patients and compiled them into a book, "The Sex
Lives of Psychiatrists." Such a book might depict modern
therapists as uniquely dangerous perverts the rest of us should
fear. Would that be accurate or fair? No. It would be an
example of what social scientists term as fallacious "selection
bias:" a grossly unfair smear on an entire group based on the
misdeeds of a few of its most disturbed number. Now, Dr.
Ponton, and readers and reviewers who seem to worship this
kind of book as "realism:" how is what she does to teenagers
any different?
Second, Dr. Ponton's comments on youth sexuality are
blatantly inaccurate. She claims that today's teenagers "are
taking greater risks" with sex than past generations. Not true.
The latest National Center for Health Statistics data shows that
teens today are less likely to get pregnant, less likely have
babies or abortions, and less likely to contract STDs today than
teens of 25 to 30 years ago. Further, teens who do get pregnant
tend to be older (more are 18 or 19, rather than 12-17) today
than back then.
Third, she blames the easy targets such as media images
of sex and innate teenage risk-taking for adolescent sexual
problems. What evasion. Surely, in her work in HIV treatment,
Dr. Ponton noticed that HIV-positive youths are not a
cross-section of the average teenage population, but
overwhelmingly are extremely poor, usually homeless
prostitutes forced into "survival sex" with adult clients to obtain
money, food, shelter, and protection. It's depressing that
in the few instances in which Dr. Ponton's book relates adult
sexual abuses, solicitations, and harassments toward youths,
those who seem eager to believe any debauchery among teenagers
dismiss and deny them.
The fact is that exhaustive clinical testing has found
HIV infection rates on college campuses are almost zero and,
among teens in general, are very low. However, HIV-positive
levels run as high as one in six destitute runaway and homeless
youths, which is why HIV is dozens of times more common
among African American teen girls than among the more
privileged, mostly white youths Dr. Ponton sees. Unhealthy
adult sexual behaviors and rampant youth poverty (not
race)--and not "teenage risk taking"--are the markers of high
rates of unwanted pregnancy, sexually-transmitted disease, and
AIDS among the most vulnerable fraction of young people.
When are professionals such as Dr. Ponton going to face their
responsibility to stop selling books with popular, salacious
kid-sex tales and unwarranted fears about "youth today," and
instead confront readers and policy makers with the unpopular,
real risks our adult society imposes on its young people?

There is a minor truth-in-advertising issue regarding Why Is Sex Fun?: The Evolution of Human Sexuality, by physiologist Jared Diamond: The title question is never really addressed. The true theme seems to be How Sex Came to be Sex as We Know It. Not that this isn't interesting in its own right, of course. It's just that the original question is worthy of discussion too.
Why is Sex Fun? reads like a lecture series rather than a book. Apparently intended to provide the reader with an overview of the latest thinking on the evolutionary aspects of the subject, this short work includes sections on different sexual (and mate) selection strategies employed by males and females (presumably based on unequal "investments" in the methods of getting one's genes into the next generation); lactation (why milk is produced by females, but not, as a rule, males); how and why humans, almost uniquely, came to engage in engage in recreational sex; the unequal domestic roles played by males and females, particularly in child rearing; female menopause (which is, again, nearly unique to humans); and sexual signaling (Diamond considers penis length in human males to be a prime example, but not necessarily a signal directed at females).
As fascinating as these subjects are, there is much more that is left out. Any full discussion of human sexuality, especially with the high-order concept of "fun" in its presumed abstract, needs to deal with that odd species' whole gamut of non-procreational expression: homosexuality, old-age love, and sex-as-power, for non-inclusive example. But Why is Sex Fun? treats the very large subject of recreational sex only from the "selfish gene" point of view. Even then, there is at least one major methodological criticism: Most evolutionary biologists and evolutionary psychologists go to great lengths to bring out the importance of "ancestral environment". That is, gene-based behavioral tendencies have evolved over a great deal of time, so it doesn't do a lot of good to consider them only from the standpoint of a modern participant. This problem crops up in Diamond's discussion of male hunting strategies. In a modern hunter-gatherer society, men typically go for the "big kill" (a large mammal, for instance), while women are more content to gather roots and so on. Diamond makes the point that the male strategy makes no sense nutritionally, so the answer must be found in differential sexual strategies. However, the possibility is not mentioned that hunting patterns may have evolved when big game was, in fact, rather more plentiful than it is today.
All this is a pity, because we know, from the author's other works (especially the wonderfully told Guns, Germs, and Steel), that he is quite capable of a fully formed presentation. Sex deserves it.

This book was a very interesting read for anyone thinking about getting pregnant. I really appreciated the information about nutrition, handling stress and a healthy environment and have started to change my way of life already, even though it will probably be another year before we start trying. I gave the book 4 stars instead of five because of the last section that is "just for men." I was very disappointed with this portion of the book and it left a sour feeling for me. While the book gave more science based information for women, it took a turn in talking to men in a "man-to-man" sort of way. The discussion about infidelity turns into this madness of don't cheat on your wife, though wives sometimes cheat on husbands, and how there are sometimes questions about who the father is....and so on. I felt like it was an episode of the Maury show or something. Men are just as stressed out as women about the whole pregnancy thing, and I feel that this portion of the book adds unnecessary stress. The book should have simply provided information about how to make good sperm and give support - the end. I think the chapter for men defeated the purpose of preparing both parents for creating a healthy and smart baby. I hope Dr. Lu reads this review and takes this into consideration for future editions.

This book is right up there with A Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy. Rather than presenting panicked, or patronizing, information, the authors present useful information to the newly pregnant woman. It fills a void that What to Expect and all the other pregnancy books try so hard to gloss over: you don't have to become the Virgin Mary once you're expecting. Those crazy dreams and fantasies don't make you a terrible mother and (if you're healthy) an orgasm isn't the end of the world!
The authors of this book play guides to moms- and dads- to-be, reminding her of her inherent sexuality (she must be or she wouldn't have gotten pregnant). This primarily serves as a way to allow women and men to accept sexual feelings during pregnancy-if you're healthy enough for sex and you're mind is on it, why not. And for those with partners not so willing to oblige, there's plenty of information for a woman going solo. In a world where everything must be monitored during a pregnancy, it's nice to essentially be given permission to have the thoughts, ideas, and fantasies that sometimes spring up in pregnancy (and came as a surprise to me during mine).
I'm assuming that anyone willing to get this book is open-minded to begin with, but it should be pretty obvious that this book isn't for the prudish. Oh, an constantly using words like hot mama, prego, and the like got fairly old, and the authors aren't always as funny as they'd like to be. But given the complete lack of information out there (or at least, the lack I noticed 5 years ago when I was pregnant), this is a great book. And, on the plus side, they don't constantly couch what they're writing with "if you feel up to it," or "if your doctor says it's OK" or "if you're comfortable with it," or constantly saying different forms of spouse, husband, girlfriend, etc. That can get old quickly. They cover that in the first chapter and just have fun the rest of the book.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I am a 17 yr. old girl. Even though I am not a virgin anymore this book made me realize that I am taking some pretty big risks when having sex and therefore I have made my New Year's resolution to abstain until I am older and have a stable life. I made a mistake and I rushed into sex thinking I was missing out or it was gonna be something beautiful when in fact it wasn't. I really appreciated this book. I don't think I could have found anything to have made me change my mind about the way I was doing sleeping around, but this book inspired me to see that there is nothing wrong with abstaining and with having self-respect and waiting on sex. That's how I see it now. At first I was like it's all BS but then as I kept reading more, I saw that the book was right and I realized that the only reason I had sex was because I felt pressured. Now I know that it doesn't matter what they think or what a guy wants. It's about what hurts me and what doesn't. Hey, if all the other ones are doing it, then let them go for it but I will just stick to my education from now on.
At first I was afraid of people at my school seeing me read this book so I would hide it. Then I decided I would show it to my friends so that they would think about the way they are living their lives and having sex at such a young age. It is funny, too, because I checked this book out at my school library and my friends thought I had probably gotten it somewhere else. When they saw the school stamp, they were surprised. I really appreciate that the author wrote this book. It has made a difference in my life.
