Fearless Pregnancy: Wisom and Reassurance from a Doctor, a Midwife, and a Mom Review

When it comes to my wife and her health, the words "neurotic" and "obsessive" come to mind. She gets on WebMD every time she has so much as a sniffle, and has convinced herself that she has everything from cancer to SARS to a brain tumor.
My wife and I found out we were pregnant for the first time just a few days ago. So, as soon as we were prepared to deal with it, we headed to the bookstore and found this title. Within the first three chapters, the authors had addressed fears ranging from the biggest general health issues, to the tests which are available and why you may or may not want them (answering the question for her, "I'm 34 years old, why won't they give me an amniocentesis?"), to how to tell a close friend who has been trying (hard) to get pregnant for some time that this "just sorta happened" for us. It's like the authors were inside her head.
Every parent should be fully aware of the risks involved in pregnancy. Bad things do happen, and we all know someone (or know someone who knows someone) to whom the worst possible things have happened. But many of us need the encouragement of someone authoritative who can remind us that these things are rare exceptions, and that there are some things you can control and some things you can't. "Instead of obsessing about your pregnancy," the authors remind us, "consider obsessing over parenting. That situation lasts longer, and the payoff for being prepared will likely be greater."
Many of the critics of this book seem to be response to the premise of the title. Of course there is no such thing as a "fearless pregnancy" -- if one were to read as far as the first page of the book, one would find that the authors agree:
"The key is that the fear must be valid, and it must be used properly -- to inquire, explore, and act wisely."
By no means do I believe that this book is intended to be a comprehensive reference. Perhaps the book's subtitle more accurately reflects its content: "Wisdom and Reassurance From a Doctor, a Midwife and a Mom."
It's perfect for us because this is our first pregnancy, and it will not be the only pregnancy book on our shelves. It is true that this book does not address the devastating realities for those families who have experienced loss or complication (but by no means does it attempt to diminish or dismiss these experiences, either). If you have previously experienced a difficult pregnancy or loss, this book will most likely not address your fears about getting pregnant again.
Nonetheless, for anyone simply trying to get a grip on what can be one of the scariest things to happen to you for the first time, we highly recommend this book.

Fearless Pregnancy: Wisom and Reassurance from a Doctor, a Midwife, and a Mom Overview

Like other best-selling pregnancy books, this The Fearless Pregnancy shares first-person information from a new mom, but what sets it apart from the other books is that it also includes helpful advice from both a doctor and a midwife. The Pregnancy Book: Month-by-Month, Everything You Need to Know From America's Baby Experts Review

This pregnancy book is *much* better than the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" book that is so often recommended to every pregnant woman out there. It is also much better than the other 'standard' pregnancy books you'll find.
This book is a complete and joyful guide to what happens during pregnancy - mentally, emotionally, and physically - to mom and baby. It has a great index; so if a specific symptom doesn't crop up in the exact month they cover it, you can easily look it up in the back and read about it. I found this guide very informative and supportive of everything I'm going through with my second pregnancy. [I wish I'd had this book for my first pregnancy, instead of that wretched "what to expect" book].
My one criticism of this book: the Sears' gloss over the pain that most women experience during labor. I didn't find the segment on labor very helpful or realistic. As a Childbirth Educator myself, I don't feel that anyone is doing pregnant women a favor by convicing them that labor doesn't hurt - that it is just 'pressure' or 'discomfort'. The reality is that for most women, labor IS painful - often extremely so. Women who seek an unmedicated birth need to prepare themselves to cope with and overcome this pain. And regardless of whether a woman expects to use medication or not, nobody is doing her any favors by misleading her about labor pain - she's not going to thank them when it hits her full on.
For preparing for labor and delivery, I *highly* recommend "Birthing From Within" by Pam England. It is much more realistic in preparing you for the "Real Thing" - and it is geared to help every woman work through her own issues and concerns about birthing. It is by far the most excellent book out there on labor and delivery.
Other than that small complaint - I think this is a *wonderful* guide to pregnancy - very supportive and comforting while being very honest.

What to Expect When Your Wife is Expanding: A Reassuring Month-by-Month Guide for the Father-to-Be, Whether He Wants Advice or Not Review

It took me too long to finish this book ... because my wife kept stealing it since it was a lot more fun than any of her pregnancy books! However, I just finished this easy read, and I couldn't help but recommend this to fathers-to-be.
Let's be clear: this isn't an instruction manual or anything to take too seriously. It is a very fun, month-by-month account of pregnancy.
For the people who gave it low ratings, maybe you were looking for too much out of it ... this book isn't going to stop your wife's morning sickness and it isn't going to teach you the secret to triple your income before the baby is born. However, it might lighten what can be a time of emotional highs and lows, filled with fear, ecstasy, anxiety and elation, often all at the same time.
Seriously, there are plenty of good books out there which give great suggestions for how to handle the upcoming changes in your lives. Check out "The Expectant Father" or books of that ilk ... but to loosen up a little bit and have fun while getting involved in the pregnancy, get this book. Just don't read any of it to your wife until you've finished it, or you won't see it until she's finished reading it herself.

What to Expect When Your Wife is Expanding: A Reassuring Month-by-Month Guide for the Father-to-Be, Whether He Wants Advice or Not Overview

In this classic parody, Thomas Hill presents the testosterone-inspired answer to the best-seller What to Expect When You're Expecting.* This completely revised and updated edition of the best-selling parody humorously guides fathers-to-be through nine months of 21st-century baby preparations.Complete with weird baby names, tips on how to avoid a sympathetic pregnancy, and a discourse on the evolution of ESPN and the role it plays postdelivery, Hill's tome has been thoroughly revised to account for not only the usual father-to-be questions but also the often baffling and amusing technological and medical advances awaiting today's four million expectant dads.* This hilarious month-by-month guide offers new and veteran dads solace, laughter, and a bit of useful information, including a question-and-answer chapter covering basics like "How much does having a baby cost?"; visual charts assessing such things as the breakdown behind the mom-to-be's weight gain; sidebars covering common wife complaints and anticipated purchases; and much more.

Motherwell Maternity Fitness Plan Review

I'm a fitness instructor and I bought this book so I could be well versed on giving modifications to pregnant women that come to my classes. I found the book to be informative and contain a good amount of information beyond the typical "don't lay on your back" type of thing. The book addresses the pregnant athlete, eating well, posture, meditiation, stretching, getting in exercise while doing activities around the house, your skin, hormones, discomforts, etc. The book has some basic sketches/drawings in it which I thought were value added but this is not a picture book.
I found the book to be a great guide and it is recommended by the American Council on Exercise, which is who I have my group exercise certification through and how I originally found out about the book. I look forward to using the information for myself one day. In the meantime, I'm loaning it to one of my trusted newly pregnant students so she can keep fit while pregnant. I highly recommend this one especially if you're only buying one fitness book for pregnancy.

The Morning Sickness Companion Review

When I was suffering from morning sickness with my first pregnancy, I think I bought every book out there, looking for relief. This book wasn't horrible, but it wasn't that helpful either. In fact, I bought it because of the previous reviews and now I can't believe it got 5 stars. If you just want to know someone else has been through it, or some perspective, then this book will be helpful. If you want something to make your morning sickness go away, or even lessen, then good luck. Try spending the money on motion sickness wristbands instead.

The Morning Sickness Companion Overview

It's frustrating and a nuisance---and it can be a major obstacle to experiencing the joy of pregnancy. But morning sickness doesn't always strike in the morning, and for many women it doesn't even strike---it's an ever-present part of their pregnancy, with symptoms ranging from mild nausea and exhaustion to crippling depression and physical illness. We all know the standard suggestions---crackers and tea, Jell-O and ginger ale---but when they don't seem like enough, what can women really do to manage their symptoms and recover the happiness their pregnancy should bring? As debilitating as morning sickness is, we don't hear much about it. But finally, just when it seems as though there's nothing out there, women have somewhere to turn. Elizabeth Kaledin's The Morning Sickness Companion is a book by and for women suffering morning sickness. Morning sickness is a reality of pregnancy---_ of women are affected---and this book is dedicated to them. It fills a major void in pregnancy literature, providing a brief history of morning sickness, all the latest scientific thinking, research on its emotional toll, and lots of reassuring tips and advice from other women about what they ate, how sick they really were, and how to survive, since the fact is it is nearly inevitable. Engaging, warm, often funny, and always informative, The Morning Sickness Companion offers women who are suffering the wisdom and comfort they really need.

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy Review

"The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy" is a difficult book to rate. Vicki Iovine's honesty and sense of humor about pregnancy deserves 5 stars. If you find pregnancy difficult for even a moment, this book will be a great comfort to you. It is a delightful antidote to the dry, frightening pregnancy books that flood the market.
But I found myself angry with a couple of the positions Vicki takes and how she presents them, especially regarding natural childbirth. This is why I knocked my rating down to 3 stars. She seems to take it quite personally that some women make birth choices different from her own, and she goes out of her way to be quite rude and petty about it.
The Good Stuff
* Vicki Iovine really and truly understands how traumatic pregnancy weight gain can be. We live in a society where we are taught to hate and fear getting fat, and we cannot just turn that lesson off when we get pregnant. It is HARD to go to the doctor and get weighed all the time, and be judged on if our gain is "acceptable" or not. Vicki gets this, she genuinely does, and it is such a joy to read her rants about it. You're not alone in being scared to step on the scale.
* The Guide includes a realistic, down-to-Earth discussion of what you really need to buy for your new baby, and what you can skip. A huge blessing for new moms!
* Much of Vicki's advice is wonderfully specific. For instance, she doesn't just tell you that you need to bring an outfit to the hospital for the baby to wear home - she tells you exactly what kind of outfit will work the best. She does honestly seem to remember what it's like to be a first-time mom and just not know these things.
* Vicki points out her own way of doing things, but she often describes the different choices her own girlfriends made. It is helpful to have realistic options and know that one way doesn't always work for everybody.
The Bad Stuff
* This book is downright hostile toward mothers who do not have epidurals. Vicki actively discourages women from considering unmedicated birth. She tells her readers that no matter how they feel about epidurals before they go into labor, they will ALL want one as soon as they get to the hospital, anyway, so they should just get used to the idea of having one. She also makes the highly unlikely claim that, even though she seems to have an endless list of girlfriends, she doesn't know a single woman who refused an epidural (except for medical reasons). She stoops so low as to claim that women who birth naturally have uglier faces after delivery. I don't know why she is so aggressive about this, but it is really off-putting. Even if you're not considering natural childbirth yourself, her tone is just downright catty and mean.
* Similarly, she chastises women who are disappointed to end up with c-sections. While she is totally supportive of a mother's turbulent emotions in just about everything else, she states that regretting a c-section is a sign of "self-centeredness." Even though she admits that a few of her girlfriends struggle with this problem. She suddently becomes very cold and uncaring when she covers this topic. Again, she seems to take it personally that some women regret c-sections, simply because she had one. I wish she could be a little more objective.
* Vicki contradicts herself frequently. She is happy to encourage women to embrace the natural process when it comes to weight gain, for instance. But she has no use for the natural process when it comes to birth - she thinks everyone should induce labor at a convenient moment.
* She is sympathetic and understanding about weight gain, but admits that she started out, pre-pregnancy, a size 4. Her definition of getting "big" is pushing a size 10. Most women can't relate to that.
* Vicki does actually suggest that if you don't have sex with your husband during pregnancy, he will get anxious and cheat on you. She has a very narrow and unfair opinion of men.
* She does not tell women not to exercise at all, but she does discourage *vigorous* exercise. This did not bother me. However, her approach did bother me. She goes to great lengths to tell you that if something goes wrong with the baby, and you have been exercising, you will blame yourself. This is true, but it's also true if you don't exercise at all. Mothers always blame themselves - if, God forbid, something happens to your baby and all you did was go to the grocery store that day, you will blame yourself for going to the store. A pregnant woman cannot insulate herself from guilt. Vicki seems to be aware of this, except when it comes to the things she takes personally. And exercise is one of those things. She is annoyed with women who try and "control" their pregnancies by exercising a lot. But she has no proof that this is actually a bad thing. It seems to bother her merely because it is not what she chose to do. Again, her tendency to be dismissive toward women who make other choices is very annoying.
* If you read the 1995 version of this book, the chapter on maternity clothing is hopelessly outdated. But this may be remedied in the second edition that is currently in the works.Overall, this book is refreshing, fun, and comforting. It will make you feel better about being pregnant. But take Vicki Iovine's rants about epidurals, exercise, and c-sections with a large grain of salt.

Every Woman's Guide to Eating During Pregnancy Review

After checking this book out from the local library, I had to buy a copy of my own. It has been difficult to find food that I am craving during my pregnancy that is nutritious as well. All 15 of the recipes that I've tried so far taste GREAT and are easy to make. Unlike other pregnancy recipe books I had read, the recipes are low in fat and have the nutritional content displayed. They have recipes for different diets as well (low-carb/Atkins, vegetarian, etc.)
During pregnancy it's hard to get all of the nutrition and vitamins that are recommended daily...the authors do a great job of creating delicious and easy recipes that are packed with nutrition. Even foods that I absolutely abhorred before pregnancy such as yogurt or cilantro, I now am able to eat because the dishes taste great. Many recipes I'll be making well past pregnancy (ie., Quinoa Salad with Black Beans and Sweet Red Peppers). Also, my husband really likes the meals that we've had so far and often requests that we have them again.
One good thing is that if you buy the basic ingredients (olive oil, yogurt, etc.) you will be able to make a majority of the meals in the book.
The only downside to the book is that there aren't any pictures of meals after they're prepared.
**Update July 2010**
7 years later and we're still making recipes from this cookbook. We now have a 6-year old and a 3-year old. They're particular about what they eat since I've worked in a French bakery and we're all spoiled by the great cuisine we have in the San Francisco Bay area. Amazingly, they've always liked what I've made from this cookbook. The recipes aren't just for pregnancy, but also for busy parents who want to serve healthy food to their finicky kids.

The Mother of All Pregnancy Books: The Ultimate Guide to Conception, Birth, and Everything In Between (U.S. Edition) Review

All you have to do is visit your local bookstore to see how many books are devoted to pregnancy, infertility, and post-partum, etc. This is the ONLY book that successfully covers them ALL. Ann Douglas has given us the COMPLETE guide to having a baby- the first 4 chapters alone are devoted to preparing the body for pregnancy, along with the feelings that go along with "Are we really ready to have a baby?". This book is chock full of charts, statistics, and best of all, advice and testimonies from 100 couples Douglas interviewed. Not as clinical and stringent as "What to Expect"...., yet a little more serious than the "Girlfriend's Guide...", "Mother of All Pregnancy Books" is the be all end all of pregnancy books. Topics covered are as follows:
*What does it really cost to raise children?
*Watch your weight- but not too carefully
*Create a "sperm-friendly" vaginal environment
*The major causes of infertility
*Finding Dr. Right
*The pregnancy nutrient check
*The top-ten 1st/2nd and 3rd trimester worries
*What's normal and what's not
*Pregnancy complaints from A-Z
*What pre-natal testing can- and can't- tell you
*Husband coached birth, or doula (a gir's best friend!)
*What labor is REALLY like
*When pregnancy isn't perfect (e.g. preemies, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancy, intrapartum death, molar pregnancy, etc.)
*Your post-partum body- what to expect
*The post-partum survival guide
Did I lie? This book covers it all. The biggest complaint my friend had regarding Vicki Iovine's "Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" (which I loved) was how casually the topic of miscarriage was handled (my friend, who is now due the same week as me, has experienced 2 miscarriages). Ann Douglas, however, has experienced infertility, miscarriage, AND stillbirth (and has 4 kids). The caring and frank way she deals with grieving over the loss of a baby (even suggesting spending time with your baby's body, dressing it and taking your picture with it to cry and grieve over later) was touching and impressive all at once. WARNING: If you're particularly emotional, or can't handle one more added worry at this point in your pregnancy, you might want to skip this chapter, for fear of adding to the ever-growing bag of morbid worries to may already have. But, it's nice to know the subject is covered if, God forbid, the worst happens. If you are considering having a baby, or even if you're already pregnant, YOU NEED THIS BOOK. Browse through it once and you'll be impressed, I guarantee.

The Mother of All Pregnancy Books: The Ultimate Guide to Conception, Birth, and Everything In Between (U.S. Edition) Overview

The ultimate guide to conception, birth, and everything in between.Unlike all those otherbossy, tell-you-what-to-do titles, this funny, entertaining guide presents expectant parents with all the facts on such perennial hot topics as pain relief during labor, episiotomy, and circumcision, and empowers them to make informed personal choices. It's packed with tools you won't find anywhere else, including:* Charts highlighting the risks of using various over-the-counter drug productsduring pregnancy* Lists of the ten best -- and worst --baby products* A set of emergency childbirth procedures* Forthright discussions of difficult topics like infertility, high-risk pregnancy, and pregnancy and infant loss that other books are loathe to tackle

Pregnancy and Birth: Your Questions Answered Review

As we know, doctors have become increasingly busy. You are lucky if you can get all your questions answered. To be well informed about pregnancy and birth, it does help to read as many books as possible on the subject.
The information presented here covers every stage of pregnancy from conception to childbirth. It also covers the baby's first six weeks. The advice is given by a team of two obstetricians and a midwife in a highly accessible format. Dr. Christoph Lees specializes in obstetrics, Dr. Karina has practiced in various teaching hospitals and is also a consultant. Grainne McCartan has worked as a community midwife.
The book is organized into eight color-coded thematic sections for easy reference. Being pregnant today is far different than being pregnant 25 years ago. Today's mother prepares for pregnancy, takes prenatal care very seriously, understands how her baby is developing, is well-informed on changes in her body, knows how to stay fit and healthy, understands issues in pregnancy, is prepared for labor and birth and has all this information at her disposal in this handy reference.
New mothers who did not plan their pregnancy will be happy to learn that the birth control pills they are taking will rapidly clear from their bodies and won't hurt the baby. What happens at a prenatal visit? Did you know that Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease passed on to humans by domestic cats? A good reason to make your husband change the litter box. I didn't realize that pregnant women should also wear gloves when doing yard work.
You will enjoy reading about which herbal remedies are fine to take in pregnancy. Ginger can help the digestive system and prevent nausea. The Whole Pregnancy Handbook: An Obstetrician's Guide to Integrating Conventional and Alternative Medicine Before, During, and After Pregnancy Review

I am currently pregnant with my second child and thought I did not need any more pregnancy books. However, I was recently browsing in a bookstore and came across the Whole Pregnancy Handbook and quickly found myself engrossed in its clear explanations of pregnancy and birth and the conventional and alternative approaches to both routine and more unusual pregnancy and birth situations. In the past, I have been put off by "over-zealous" pregnancy books so I loved the way that this book offers clear, non-alarmist and non-judgmental information on a wide range of ways to promote healthy pregnancy, babies and birth. The anecdotes from real women are particularly great--- they give you a sense of how many different women experience pregnancy and birth. I also loved the yoga section and the timeline that describes what is happening in the mother's body and in the fetus month-by-month throughout the pregnancy. I recommend this book highly for anyone who is looking for "one-stop shopping" that brings together a wide range of approaches to conception, pregnancy and birth that, until now, have been isolated from one another in "conventional" and "alternative" pregnancy books.

Great Expectations: Your All-in-One Resource for Pregnancy & Childbirth Review

This is the most informative, positive, and non-scary pregnancy book I've read. Every other pregnancy book I've read (including What to Expect When You're Expecting) made me cry after every paragraph as it detailed all the horrible things that a woman can do to permanently damage her baby, all the awful ways a woman's body will be disfigured by pregnancy and childbirth, and how a woman's life will be completely changed, not for the better, once the child is born. This book, on the other hand, presents information about pregnancy and childbirth in a wholly positive manner, even when detailing the potential pitfalls of pregnancy and childbirth. The information in this book is current and up-to-date, and the book is very well-written. I would recommend the book just for the positive and reassuring tone alone, and all the excellent information in the book is a bonus. Once you read this book, you won't need any other.

Great Expectations: Your All-in-One Resource for Pregnancy & Childbirth Overview

The Managing Your Pregnancy section includes: strategies for planning maternity leave; exercise guidelines; what to eat and what to avoid; safe and unsafe medications; and how to locate the best childcare and pediatricians. The illustrated Baby Gear Guide warns about unsafe products and offers solid, research-based facts for choosing the safest car seats, cribs, soft carriers, baby diapers and clothing. Your Guide to Giving Birth is the most up-to-date labor and birth resource available to parents today. Based on brand-new medical evidence, it helps families to realistically plan for labor and delivery, including detailed "you are there" descriptions for every major intervention and medication they're likely to encounter -- such as epidurals, inductions and cesarean sections. You and Your Baby presents a complete guide for the first six months of life after birth. There's mom-friendly advice for post-birth recovery, and baby-sensitive care strategies for feeding, bathing, diapering, soothing and helping a baby to sleep. The book's Resource Guide lists over 100 of the best Internet sites for parents. The comprehensive Pregnancy Dictionary translates 200-plus pregnancy and medical terms into easy-to-understand lay language. "I have this book as well as What to Expect When Expecting, and I find this book to be so much better as it gives a week to week breakdown of what is happening to both mom and baby. I pick up this book each week as my pregnancy progresses and even though not every issue listed in each week's summary necessarily happens to me, it's good to know what I 'could' expect. I would highly recommend this book to any expecting mom!" -- Cynthia, an expectant mother"If you are searching for one book for your pregnancy or for that one book to refer all of your expectant clients to, this book is by far the greatest achievement in childbirth education reading material! Sandy Jones and her daughter Marcie Jones have included absolutely everything an expectant woman and her family needs to know. This book should be on everyone's recommended reading list"--Connie Livingston, BS, RN, FACCE (Dona), CCE, CLD, birthsource.com"Great Expectations is the perfect resource for moms-to-be. Pregnant Woman's Comort Book : A Self-Nurturing Guide to Your Emotional Well-Being During Pregnancy and Early Motherhood Review

This book was very helpful to me during and after my pregnancy. The book includes chapters on physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of pregnancy and helps you plan for the postpartum period. Louden offers practical suggestions (for instance, think of food in terms of colors and try to include every color each day) and ideas for you to explore about your ideal birth, what you will miss about your life before the baby, etc. There were many times when I was going through something and could find just the chapter to fit my situation (i.e. "I am a body without a brain"). And I was glad I went through the postpartum chapters before my daughter was born. During those first two insane months of motherhood, I could go back to my journaling based on those chapters and remind myself of the things that were important. Thanks to Jennifer's suggestions, I had even created lists of resources to turn to when things got tough.
One reviewer mentions the new-agey aspects of the book. I am also not particularly comfortable with that brand of spirituality, but I just ignored those parts, which only made a small portion of the book. The book is good enough that the parts I skipped didn't detract from its value to me.
Also, don't skip this book if you are adopting a baby. Although you may not relate to the chapters about the physical aspects of pregnancy, there are plenty of chapters that explore your feelings about motherhood, so this book will work for you.
I highly recommend this book to mothers-to-be of all types!

I laughed a ton from the very first page! It was a great book and very accurate descriptions of a womans feelings during the not so pleasant pregnancy side effects.

How Men Have Babies: The Pregnant Father's Survival Guide Review

As a future daddy, I was looking for some words of advice and tips as to how I can support my wife during her pregnancy. I chose this book for two reasons. One, It was written by one I respect as a better than your average actor. Two, it was new on the market and there were no reviews for it. I was disappointed in the book. It seemed a little tacky and a few punch lines were added for humor. The book sits on my bookshelf ready for the next garage sale. If you are an expecting father, I found the next book that I bought to be the most useful: "The Expectant Father : Facts, Tips, and Advice for Dads-To-Be"

The Pregnancy Instruction Manual (Owner's and Instruction Manual) Review

I bought this as a gift for a relative of mine, she loved it. It's written differently than most pregnancy books, but still offers the same great imformation. She said she read it quicker and was more interested in it than other books. I'd definatly buy it again or recommend it.

The Real Deal Guide to Pregnancy Review

Just as funny as *The Girlfriend's Guide* with a little bit better organization. Ms. Lenkert manages to be pretty unbiased about most of the information that she presents. I like both Iovine & Lenkert for the simple reason that they answer questions that most women are too embarrassed to ask their MD's. This book is especially helpful for first-time moms who may or may not have a "Mommy Menagerie" of their own to ask questions. As a first-timer myself, as well as an Labor & Delivery nurse, I found that the informal nature of the book was very comforting. All of my medical knowledge (including that found in many pregnancy books) has a tendency to make the entire process of pregnancy terrifying. This book was well-organized - you can flip through it to find the inforemation you need without having to read straight through. I especially liked the various lists that she had - like "what to pack in your hospital bag". All together, this has been one of my favorite books, and will recommend/gift to all of my friends.

The Mommy MD Guide to Pregnancy and Birth: More than 900 tips that 60 doctors who are also mothers use during their own pregnancies and births (The Mommy MD Guides) Review

I've always been an interested dad - I'm one of those fathers who wanted to understand what my wife experienced during her pregnancy, especially as we consider our second child. When I came across the MommyMDGuides book, the concept intrigued me because all the moms were doctors, and I was curious as to how they approached their pregnancies.
The advice is offered in a supportive, yet authoritative tone, and for men, it's terrific because it effectively explains the nuances of being pregnant (an experience we'll never know!). I can throughly recommend it not only for new moms, but for the prospective and new dads in their lives. This would be a terrific gift at one of those mom and dad showers.

The Mommy MD Guide to Pregnancy and Birth: More than 900 tips that 60 doctors who are also mothers use during their own pregnancies and births (The Mommy MD Guides) Overview

Dr. Spock is dead. Familiar pregnancy books are outdated. Neither of them speak to the mom who needs advice when her child cries in the night. To whom do women turn for the latest information and advice about conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood? The Mommy MD Guides The first book in our Mommy MD Guides book series, The Mommy MD Guide to Pregnancy and Birth, is filled with tips that doctors who are also mothers use for their own families during their own pregnancies and births. To create it, we spoke with 60 doctors who are also mothers; we call them Mommy MD Guides. We spoke with many Mommy MD Guides who are still in the trenches with their babies. Some of them were even pregnant when we talked. We also spoke with Mommy MD Guides whose babies are grown up with babies of their own. They are Grammy MD Guides! Combined, these physicians have centuries of experience as doctors, and among them they have 146 children. The 900+ reassuring, trusted, and often even humorous tips in this book are presented in the Mommy MD Guides own words, and each tip is clearly attributed to the doctor who lived it. Because doctors so often see the things that can go wrong, they try to do everything as right as they can for their own health and for that of their families. Physicians are a healthier group than the whole. Even though women physicians sometimes will just suffer with things that take time and that affect them alone, pregnancy is different. Most doctors go the extra mile to take care of their own bodies while they are carrying their babies. The Mommy MD Guide to Pregnancy and Birth offers tips on both the challenges and also the celebrations of pregnancy. You will discover how Mommy MD Guides made it through pesky pregnancy challenges such as morning sickness, back pain, and heartburn, and you will also learn how they enjoyed wonderful celebrations of pregnancy such as telling their partners the good news, baby showers, and meeting their babies for the first time. This book is a reassuring look at pregnancy that is filled with practical, actionable tips that work. After all, if a physician juggling a busy practice and a hectic home or a resident working 110 hours a week used a tip, no doubt it worked. And if it worked for her, it will likely work for you too. The book is divided into 43 chapters, one for each week of pregnancy plus chapters about the birth. Each chapter opens with a Your Baby This Week section and is filled with tips about the topics particular to that week. In addition to more than 900 tips in the book, it features the following three types of sidebars. When to Call Your Doctor or Midwife sidebars offer critical information of when to seek medical help. Mommy MD Guide Recommended Product sidebars feature products that Mommy MD Guides found invaluable during their pregnancies, including cost and availability information. MomMy Time sidebars suggest ways for moms-to-be to relax, de-stress, and enjoy this amazing, wonderful time in their lives. Welcome to the Mommy MD Guides!

Preparing for a Healthy Baby: A Pregnancy Book (English and Spanish Edition) Review

I received Preparing for a Healthy Baby from my OBGYN when I was pregnant with my first child. I loved it so much I gave my only copy to my sister, who after carrying it with her for two pregnancies can't seem to find it. I was desperate to find a copy of the book again now that I am pregnant with my second. This book answered all the millions of questions I had and let me, and my husband, and my doctor get some sleep at night. It was easy to read and find the exact section I was looking for. I was so glad I found this on Amazon I bought four copies for my sister, cousins, and myself. You should not have a baby with out having this book at your fingertips.
