Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy, Revised Edition: The Complete Guide to Eating Before, During, and After Your Pregnancy Review

I bought this book after returning a vegetarian pregnancy book, and I'm really pleased with it. I find the nutrition information detailed, easy to read and understand, and well-organized. The author is positive about vegetarian diets (many pregnancy authors are way too conservative about this, in my opinion). She makes easy to follow dietary recommendations for each stage of pregnancy--it's very easy to fit "your own" diet into it, including a vegetarian diet. I really appreciate the tables listing calcium-rich foods, iron-rich foods, etc.

The Complete Guide to Pregnancy After 30 Review

This book spends a LOT of time combating the idea that women over 30 are more at risk or will have a more problematic pregnancy. Quote after quote from doctors and mothers bemoan this fact. I understand why this needs to be said, but in this book, it gets repetitive. The book reads like a long, well-researched feature article dispelling the myths of "older mothers," rather than a guide, perhaps because the author is not a physician herself.
There is very little of the "leading you through" week by week or even month by month kind of advice you would expect from a book called "The COMPLETE Guide to Pregnancy."
The other thing I didn't like was the attitude that older women were practically all career-obsessed. One woman relates how she started going into labor during a "very important" business meeting that lasted several hours. She said she just dug her fingers into the table and didn't tell anyone what was going on. Her cervix was majorly dilated and then only when the meeting was over did she go to the hospital. And the book, instead of saying that this was kind of crazy and possibly dangerous behavior, put it up as an example of how women can be strong! Once I read that, I lost faith in this book.
The one good thing I can point out about this book (and the reason I bought it to begin with) is that it is one of the few books that has significant space devoted to what to do BEFORE you're pregnant. (Ann Douglas's Mother of All Pregnancy Books being the other). So many books on pregnancy start out with "So your test is positive!" This book discusses fertility and other issues such as how to prepare yourself with diet, etc.

The Complete Guide to Pregnancy After 30 Overview

Over 750* babies are born each day in the UK-alone to women between the ages of 30 and 40+ challenging old attitudes to pregnancy and age. This helpful and truly comprehensive book will reassure women nearing 30 and older that they are neither too old nor too high-risk to have a healthy baby. The Complete Guide to Pregnancy After 30 covers the entire range of concerns about pregnancy and birth for the mature mother-to-be, from conception right through to the first months of motherhood.

Every Woman's Guide to Eating During Pregnancy Review

After checking this book out from the local library, I had to buy a copy of my own. It has been difficult to find food that I am craving during my pregnancy that is nutritious as well. All 15 of the recipes that I've tried so far taste GREAT and are easy to make. Unlike other pregnancy recipe books I had read, the recipes are low in fat and have the nutritional content displayed. They have recipes for different diets as well (low-carb/Atkins, vegetarian, etc.)
During pregnancy it's hard to get all of the nutrition and vitamins that are recommended daily...the authors do a great job of creating delicious and easy recipes that are packed with nutrition. Even foods that I absolutely abhorred before pregnancy such as yogurt or cilantro, I now am able to eat because the dishes taste great. Many recipes I'll be making well past pregnancy (ie., Quinoa Salad with Black Beans and Sweet Red Peppers). Also, my husband really likes the meals that we've had so far and often requests that we have them again.
One good thing is that if you buy the basic ingredients (olive oil, yogurt, etc.) you will be able to make a majority of the meals in the book.
The only downside to the book is that there aren't any pictures of meals after they're prepared.
**Update July 2010**
7 years later and we're still making recipes from this cookbook. We now have a 6-year old and a 3-year old. They're particular about what they eat since I've worked in a French bakery and we're all spoiled by the great cuisine we have in the San Francisco Bay area. Amazingly, they've always liked what I've made from this cookbook. The recipes aren't just for pregnancy, but also for busy parents who want to serve healthy food to their finicky kids.

Real Food for Mother and Baby: The Fertility Diet, Eating for Two, and Baby's First Foods Review

When we last heard from Nina Planck, she was a leader in the crusade for Real Food. Her precepts are, by now, familiar:
--- Eat foods with a long history in the human diet (peaches, spinach, lard).
--- Eat them in a whole state, or close to it, or produced in a traditional manner.
--- Eat foods that spoil. But eat them before they do.
--- Don't eat anything that's engineered to be something it's not --- low in something or high in something else. That includes orange juice with DHA --- the vital fatty acid found chiefly in fish --- made from algae. God or Nature (as you prefer) made us fish-eaters. You don't find fish in orange juice.
From the perspective of this household, she's one of the smarties, and her book belongs on the alongside the writing of Michael Pollan. Food writing like this comes less from academic study than from life experience, and Planck has of that --- she grew up on an organic farm and headed New York's Greenmarket. So it's hardly surprising that, when she got pregnant, she would soon be writing about a sensible diet for expectant mothers, what to eat after the baby's born, and what to find the little heir or heiress.
It helps to have read her first book. But worry not. In Real Food for Mother and Baby, Planck summarizes her previous writing. And on the strength of her story, she's doing something right: Five months after her son was born, she was wearing her "prepregnancy jeans".
But let's start with getting pregnant, which is easy to do if you're 19 and unmarried, harder to do if you're in your 30s and working hard. Your diet, she says, "can even affect your baby's genes in the womb." So you want to be in shape to be preggers. Planck pushes for an omnivore's diet and emphasizes the importance of fish oil. For better sperm, she suggests that men eat foods rich in vitamins A and E together.
Eating for two? Planck doesn't buy it. Better, she says, to eat well. But she's no nun. A glass of wine now and then does not, she believes, condemn the fetus to a stunted brain. Especially if you're stoking your body with iron --- by which she especially means red meat or liver, ideally from animals that were raised without drugs.
Once the kid is here, life gets easier. If, that is, you're nursing. Milk, she notes, is all a baby needs for six months. That's another reason for you to eat Real Food: "Thirty minutes after you eat an orange, Vitamin C appears in your milk, just like that." That doesn't mean you can't have some wine: "Once you metabolize alcohol, it disappears from your milk."
I had no idea that the baby's brain has remarkable growth in the first three months of life. Again, all the more reason for the mother to eat lots of "brain food". Want your kid, at age four, to leave other children in the dust? Take cod liver oil during pregnancy and the "fourth trimester."
Once the baby can take solid food, you may part company with Planck. "Raw ground beef or lamb with olive oil and salt?" Yikes! I see the logic. But still: yikes! I'm more comfortable reading about a traditional Italian regime for toddlers: grated Parmesan mixed with olive oil.
Whatever your disagreements with Planck, you can't fault her for stinting on her research. And so you pick up helpful tidbits along the way:
-- "Apple peels contain up to 40 percent of the antioxidant flavonoids in an apple and about one-third of the vitamin C."
-- "Unrefined sea salt contains about 80 essential minerals and trace elements."
-- "Statins, the class of drugs that stops your liver from making LDL, deplete your body of the antioxidant coenzyme CoQ10, which the heart muscle depends on."
Of all her advice, though, there's one suggestion that leaps out at me. Not only because of the common-sense wisdom at the heart of it. Even more, I admire her last line: "Stop searching for the new and the fake. Don't read the latest 'nutrition' bulletins. Eat old foods. Don't eat too much. That should leave time for other, satisfying activities --- like reading a novel."

Real Food for Mother and Baby: The Fertility Diet, Eating for Two, and Baby's First Foods Overview

Following the success of Real Food, Nina Planck's Real Food for Mother and Baby explains why real food is better for woman and child. Nina Planck, one of the great food activists, changed the way we view old-fashioned foods like butter with her groundbreaking Real Food. T hen she got pregnant. Never one to accept conventional wisdom blindly, Nina found the usual advice about pregnancy and baby food riddled with myths and misunderstandings. In Real Food for Mother and Baby, Nina explains why many modern ideas about pregnancy and infant nutrition are wrongheaded and why traditional foods are best. While Nina can be controversial—her op-ed in the New York Times on vegan diets for infants was one of the paper's most e-mailed articles— she's no contrarian. Readers applaud her candor; they also trust her research and welcome her advice. Nina's basic premise hasn't changed—whole foods are best—but some of the details are surprising. Pregnant women need meat and salt, not iron supplements. Nursing will be easier if you act like the mammal you are. Delaying the introduction of certain solid foods doesn't prevent allergies. Cereals are not the best foods for tiny eaters; meat and egg yolks are better. From conception to two years, the body's overwhelming needs are for quality fat and protein, not for carrots and low-fat dairy. Even as she casts a skeptical eye on the conventional wisdom, Nina is reassuring. She shows you how to keep your baby healthy on good, simple food. Real Food for Mother and Baby will be the new classic on eating for two.

The Green Pregnancy Diet: Healthy eating habits for mommy, baby and the planet Review

I really liked this book, and I was surprised to find that I learned a few things (even beyond some really yummy recipes). In my job I look at environmental exposures to chemicals and the human health effects that may be related. It makes sense to limit exposures to chemicals, but many of us are not aware of what food or household products contain these materials. It is interesting to realize how you can easily make a few modifications to what you regularly eat to help out your health and the health of our planet. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is pregnant or planning on being pregnant in the near future!

Before Your Pregnancy: A 90 Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception Review

I really wanted to like this book. I wasn't even expecting it to have lots of information that I didn't already know, having done a ton of research myself in my role as fertility counselor, but thought that it would be slightly helpful at least. It was not. It was instead incomplete and incorrect.
Conclusions made are inconsistent - thing A is to be treated with caution because its safety for pregnant women is unproven, whereas thing B is considered safe because it has never been shown to cause problems. Where is the logic here? There is no difference between "never been shown to cause problems" and "safety unproven". And if there is a difference in the proven safety of these two things, it should be stated explicitly rather than left at these two vague comments.
Some statements are just plain incorrect. For example, it is stated that ovulation is the day of the basal body temperature rise, when in fact the temperature rise usually occurs the day following ovulation. Also, intercourse on this day is stated to give the best chance of conception. This is incorrect whichever way you look at it - intercourse on the day of the temperature rise is usually too late (being the day after ovulation, the egg is often dead by then), and intercourse on the day of ovulation is still not the best timing (for those who are interested, intercourse the day before ovulation is best, although difficult to time). I have to wonder what other "facts" in this book are downright wrong.
Finally, conclusions are drawn without sharing the information used to make them. It is claimed that a woman who has no immunity to rubella must get vaccinated, stating that the potential risks of the vaccine far outweigh the benefits. Nowhere is it mentioned that an adult woman receiving the rubella vaccine has much higher risk of serious medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and thrombocytopenia, and that according to the CDC the incidence of rubella in the US is extremely low. Whether or not the benefits of this vaccine outweigh the risks is something for women to decide for themselves, with all pertinent information.
Now, I would expect a book written by two doctors to side more often with medical gospel than not, but I was very surprised by the lack of portrayal of the other side of the issues. Or more to the point, that some things were treated as complete non-issues: women are encouraged to run right out and get the flu and chicken pox shots, with no mention of their risks or efficacy.
I should say that I did find the information on weight, diet, and exercise to be very thorough and mostly consistent with other reading I have done. Still, I simply cannot recommend this book.

Metabolic Toxemia of Late Pregnancy: A Disease of Malnutrition Review

Dr. Brewer's book, Metabolic Toxemia of Late Pregnancy, is a difficult book to read for the non-medical person but it provides essential information on toxemia and how to avoid this potentially deadly disease of pregnancy. It is written by a doctor for a doctor. As a clinician studying over 500 women with toxemia over a 10 year period, he presents convincing proof in the form of case studies, that he understood the disease, how to treat it, and how to prevent it.
I would recommend any pregnant woman who is at risk or showing signs of developing toxemia to suggest the book to their doctor.

Feed the Belly: The Pregnant Mom's Healthy Eating Guide Review

What a perfect book for all grandparents-to-be to give their expectant, or soon-to-be expectant, daughters and daughters-in-law. Much better than our outdated and possibly resented advice! Although this book is so delightful, Grandma will probably read it first or buy two copies and keep one for herself.
Largeman-Roth takes the reader on the journey from pre-pregnancy through the child's birth and breast feeding. As an encouraging, never judgmental coach, she explains how pregnant mothers can best take care of themselves and their babies by discussing what foods are healthiest and why. In a supportive tone, she offers the mother-to-be realistic advice on everything from food cravings to dealing with gas to healthy snacks to eating out at fast food places to drinking enough water to surviving morning sickness to best equipping your kitchen.
Largeman-Roth must have a great sense of humor--this book is fun! It's also remarkably easy to read and understand despite the large amount of nutritional information it contains. There is nothing dry or boring in "Feed the Belly". Largeman-Roth makes it all seem simple. She comes across like a helpful confidante who wants you to follow her advice without being compulsive about eating healthy.
There's a whole chapter on exercise--something that other pregnancy nutrition books skip completely. It includes a list of places to buy hard-to-find maternity exercise clothes, as well as a list of yoga poses that are safe for pregnancy. With obesity such a looming issue these days, Largeman-Roth does the reader a great service by encouraging pregnant women to get--and stay--active. And that's good news for your grandkids too.

Vitamins, Herbs, Minerals, & Supplements: The Complete Guide Review

After browsing through several so called "Alternative Medicine" books that tout claims about this melon curing cancer, and this oat grass treating heart disease, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book by Dr Griffith made it a point to separate POTENTIAL benefits from KNOWN benefits, so that I at least knew where I stood. Additionally, this book, unlike others, contains information about Vitamins, herbs, minerals and supplements, so that I only had to purchase one book instead of three to get the same amount of information.

Fertility Foods: Optimize Ovulation and Conception Through Food Choices Review

The gist of this book is that insulin resistance--a condition that can be pre-diabetic, and a condition that can be MODERATED BY PROPER DIET--impedes fertility. The book describes that problem and proposes a solution.
I am not a fan of all the low-carb diets that have been popular these past few years. Luckily, this doctor doesn't seem to be an extremist. His suggestions are to balance carbohydrates and protein, both throughout the day and AT EVERY MEAL, thus avoiding insulin surges. He also prescribes eating something at the end of the day (bedtime) in order to avoid a "starvation" period of more than 8-9 hours.
According to his charts, if I were to try to use his system to lessen my insulin resistance (and, based upon his research, become more fertile), I would be expected to eat about 92 grams of protein and 92 grams of carbohydrates per day. He also gives a goal for fat grams. While I don't recall what mine was, I noted that it was comparable to what a standard weight loss diet would suggest.
To compare with a "normal" diet range for my height/weight (from a diet/fitness site I subscribe to):
PROTEIN -- 92 g (Groll) -- 30 to 136 g (my diet)
CARBS -- 92 g (Groll) -- 135 - 252 g (my diet)
I am not a nutrition expert to evaluate this professionally, but it doesn't seem too extreme to my reading of the numbers. I also recall that, during my pregnancy (in 2003), my doctor and our Bradley method childbirth instructor advised me to eat at least 80 g of protein per day. I believe that a higher protein level is frequently advised for pregnancy, so it could be relevant to fertility as well.
Groll also discusses the importance of exercise both for general health and as another way to decrease insulin surges that can lead to insulin resistance. All in all, his program appeared reasonable and healthy to me.
For someone struggling with infertility, I expect that following a plan like this might be a simple, cost-effective step to take before submitting to other more expensive and invasive fertility treatments. Naturally, anyone with specific health issues should consult their physician before starting this or any other diet and exercise plan!

Fertility Foods: Optimize Ovulation and Conception Through Food Choices Overview

Dr. Jeremy Groll is an expert in reproductive endocrinology and fertility treatment. Fertility Foods presents his groundbreaking, noninvasive, nutritionally based method, which increases ovulation, reduces miscarriage, and significantly improves your chances of successfully getting and staying pregnant. Dr. Groll's specialized research has proven that there is a powerful link between a body's insulin resistance and fertility problems. Resistance to insulin increases the body's insulin levels, hindering normal ovulation either by limiting the maturation process of the released egg or by preventing ovulation altogether. High insulin levels can also impede the fertilized egg's ability to attach to the uterus, leading to implantation failure and miscarriage. In fact, women with insulin resistance problems are four to five times as likely as other women to suffer miscarriages -- meaning they have as high as a 50 percent chance of miscarriage. Dr. Groll has developed an insulin-reducing diet based on balancing protein and complex carbohydrate intake to create insulin levels most conducive to ovulation. He combines his nutritional plan -- which includes nutritional charts, food suggestions, and recipes -- with a specific exercise program that enhances insulin metabolism and an emotional support system that you can draw on during your quest to become parents. This three-pronged approach increases the rates of spontaneous ovulation and significantly improves the uterine environment, decreasing the potential for miscarriage. One in every ten couples in America is affected by infertility. Yet, only 5 to 10 percent of patients actually need high-tech procedures such as in vitro fertilization. Whether you are taking your first steps in combating infertility or searching for effective methods to support more advanced fertility treatments, Fertility Foods is your helpful and rewarding guide.

Eating for Two: Recipes for Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women Review

I'm a long time fan of Mothering magazine, and a devotee of attachment parenting and natural living. I was so frustrated in my first pregnancy, trying to find a book that approached eating during pregnancy from this viewpoint. Now at last, as I prepare to enter my second pregnancy, the book I wanted is here!
Robin Lim talks briefly about nutrition in the early sections. Brief is ok with me, and most of the mommas I know who would like this book would be fine with that as we tend to already be pretty nutrition-savvy.
The heart of the book is the recipes. We've only tried a few so far, but we've enjoyed them! The Caffeine-Free Chai has become a favorite of my 5 year old, and we made the Raw Chocolate Pie for a recent potluck & everyone raved over it! Can't wait to try more recipes!
One small problem with the book - it seems to have a small marketing problem, the cover of the book is such that at first glance it appears to be just another mainstream 'what to eat while pregnant' book. It's NOT - it's very much geared towards us 'hippie momma' types! I almost didn't pick the book up when I first saw it because it looked so standard & I knew I was looking for something different. I'm very glad that I did pick it up, but it may have trouble reaching the intended audience for that reason.

I read the other reviews, but decided to pick up this book anyway, and I'm glad I did. It makes quick reading, because parts of it are in a question-and-answer format, and you can just skip the questions that don't apply to you.
I don't think the topics are so dumb that you don't deserve to be pregnant if you ask them (?), but perhaps that's because I'm a childbirth professional and have been trained to address questions of all sorts nonjudgmentally.
What I like the most about this book is that it presents nutritional information in a way that I've never been able to find it: logically, comprehensively, and specifically for vegetarians and vegans. I was a little suspicious after reading in a review that she claims one cup of tofu has 40 grams of protein (which she does), and a quick check of my fridge shows that a whole package of tofu contains around 35 grams - but who eats a whole package in one meal?
It is bothersome that she doesn't cite her information consistently, sending me to my fridge or online to corroborate her information, but on the other hand we should never be relying on any one source for information about our health.
I especially like her tables and lists: clear, simple RDAs; examples of foods to eat that are rich in each of the vitamins and minerals, and especially her clear breakdown of lipids (fats and fatty-acids), and what foods provide them. Her information on what's in prenatal vitamins and whether they are or are not veg-friendly is great, in a small section that suggests exactly how much of the vitamins it should have and from what sources.
If you can avoid bits of vague misinformation and don't mind the question-and-answer format, this book is a clear distillation of a confusing abundance of nutritional information that vegetarians and pregnant or trying-to-be-pregnant moms need.

Adventures in Tandem Nursing: Breastfeeding During Pregnancy and Beyond Review

I remember the first time I saw an eleven month old baby who could walk nurse. "disgusting!" I thought. A few years later, I saw a toddler walk up to her mother and say "mommy, can I nurse?" I was appalled.
Well, fast forward to the present. I am now nursing a 26 month old toddler who can walk and talk in complete sentences and I am ALSO nursing her four month old sister! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would be a LaLecheLeague type. I thought they were so extreme. Hahaha! Life is funny sometimes. Now I wouldn't have it any other way, and I can hardly believe that I was so ignorant and judgemental in the past.
I just wanted to give my background so you could understand that this review is sincere. This book is fantastic. It goes into every possible thing you ever wanted to know about nursing during pregnancy and then nursing (and caring for) two very young children at once. She *really* understands and she has some great advice. I find myself turning to it again and again as a resource. It goes into the real nitty gritty... will nursing while pregnant cause problems for the baby in utero... how do you really entertain an active toddler while you are caring for a newborn, all by yourself? The author doesn't judge anyone for choosing to wean, if appropriate, and she lets you know that this is not as simple as it may sound.
It is a great book. I am planning on buying it as a gift for a dear friend who is now trying to decide whether or not to wean during her pregnancy. I think the book will cover that for her better than I ever could.

Then the recipe section shows how to get there: Ingredient list and time it will take; clear, simple instructions; and final dish and step-by-step illustrations. Easy. Recipes range from breakfast to dessert, with everything in between. The text beginning each section is positive and encouraging, making me feel as if the authors really care about my well-being. I love this book.

Pregnancy Weight Management Review

I read this book during my second pregnancy. Now pregnant again, I knew I needed a refresher. I realize that many books and magazines provide pregnancy and postpartum information, but author (and mother) Theresa Francis-Cheung includes quotes from interviews with moms that really tell it like it is - from their worries about weight gain to battling postbaby blues. The most helpful tip for me is a list of "Nutrient-Rich Foods" (Chap 22) designed to help you lose weight postpartum. I made a copy of it and posted it on my fridge. I recommend it to all moms, whether this is your first child or not.

The PDR Family Guide to Natural Medicines & Healing Therapies (Pdr Family Guide to Natural Medicines and Healing Therapies) Review

One of the biggest problems encountered in approaching different medical strategies is sorting out the claims of the various schools. This volume presents a clear and well worded guide to a wide variety of medical issues, comparing the different available techniques. It is not perfect. In a volume of this size, judgemental claims are made, and one can disagree with the judgement made. Claims are made, without the reasoning behind them. To be honest, there is not enough space in a volume of this size for a more comprehensive evaluation, so you will have to read around the subject of interest. Having said that, despite room for disagreement, I found the information was accurate, comprehensive and understandable. If you want a handy, one-volume reference in clear format, this is the book for you. I liked the broad approach, but did not appreciate the "school medicine" assessment at the end of the reviews, although the balance was well met. I am recommending this book to my friends.
