Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy, Revised Edition: The Complete Guide to Eating Before, During, and After Your Pregnancy Review

I bought this book after returning a vegetarian pregnancy book, and I'm really pleased with it. I find the nutrition information detailed, easy to read and understand, and well-organized. The author is positive about vegetarian diets (many pregnancy authors are way too conservative about this, in my opinion). She makes easy to follow dietary recommendations for each stage of pregnancy--it's very easy to fit "your own" diet into it, including a vegetarian diet. I really appreciate the tables listing calcium-rich foods, iron-rich foods, etc.

Healthy Eating During Pregnancy (You & Your Baby) Review

I absolutely love this book. I read it cover to cover, but I also refer back to it regularly as my pregnancy progresses and more specific concerns arise. It has a great recipe section which gives wonderful ideas for healthy (and easy) meals, and it really helps you to plan out what to eat to ensure that you are getting everything that you and your growing baby need. I also really like the section in the end which gives you a check-list to ensure that you are covering all of your nutritional bases on any given day.
I have had a lot of random concerns about nutrition (for example- will it cause my baby to have a peanut allergy if I eat peanut butter while pregnant? How can I absorb more iron in my diet without taking extra supplements? What is the right amount of weight to gain during the different trimesters, How do I meet my nutritional needs when I have severe food aversions in the first trimester, just to name a few!) and they have all been thoroughly addressed in this book.
I could not recommend this book more highly!!

Eat Right For Your Baby: The Individulized Guide to Fertility and Maximum Heatlh During Pregnancy Review

Reading the other reviews, I can hear where other reviewers are coming from. It's true, this way of eating and exercising does not provide a one-size-fits-all approach, and often can seem odd. Dr. D'Adamo's Blood Type diet & exercise recommendations are explained in much more detail in earlier books. In particular, Live Right 4 Your Type would be a great introduction to the theory and science behind the Blood Type Diet (BTD). I see Eat Right 4 Your Baby (ER4YB) as a resource for folks who already have familiarity with the BTD and have found that it makes sense for them. I do wish that ER4YB included information regarding variations for non-secretors. As someone working towards getting healthy now, in anticipation of pregnancy in a few years, this information is very helpful to me, including in terms for maximizing fertility. I have lost 60 pounds in the last year from following these diet & exercise guidlines, and have seen a tremendous improvement in my energy, allergies, asthma, sinuses, and joint stiffness.

The Green Pregnancy Diet: Healthy eating habits for mommy, baby and the planet Review

I really liked this book, and I was surprised to find that I learned a few things (even beyond some really yummy recipes). In my job I look at environmental exposures to chemicals and the human health effects that may be related. It makes sense to limit exposures to chemicals, but many of us are not aware of what food or household products contain these materials. It is interesting to realize how you can easily make a few modifications to what you regularly eat to help out your health and the health of our planet. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is pregnant or planning on being pregnant in the near future!

Your Vegetarian Pregnancy : A Month-by-Month Guide to Health and Nutrition Review

I read the other reviews, but decided to pick up this book anyway, and I'm glad I did. It makes quick reading, because parts of it are in a question-and-answer format, and you can just skip the questions that don't apply to you.
I don't think the topics are so dumb that you don't deserve to be pregnant if you ask them (?), but perhaps that's because I'm a childbirth professional and have been trained to address questions of all sorts nonjudgmentally.
What I like the most about this book is that it presents nutritional information in a way that I've never been able to find it: logically, comprehensively, and specifically for vegetarians and vegans. I was a little suspicious after reading in a review that she claims one cup of tofu has 40 grams of protein (which she does), and a quick check of my fridge shows that a whole package of tofu contains around 35 grams - but who eats a whole package in one meal?
It is bothersome that she doesn't cite her information consistently, sending me to my fridge or online to corroborate her information, but on the other hand we should never be relying on any one source for information about our health.
I especially like her tables and lists: clear, simple RDAs; examples of foods to eat that are rich in each of the vitamins and minerals, and especially her clear breakdown of lipids (fats and fatty-acids), and what foods provide them. Her information on what's in prenatal vitamins and whether they are or are not veg-friendly is great, in a small section that suggests exactly how much of the vitamins it should have and from what sources.
If you can avoid bits of vague misinformation and don't mind the question-and-answer format, this book is a clear distillation of a confusing abundance of nutritional information that vegetarians and pregnant or trying-to-be-pregnant moms need.

The Pregnancy Cookbook, Revised and Expanded Edition Review

THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK is a good book, but not a great cookbook. It consists of two main sections, the first on nutrition and the second on recipes, plus appendices that list which recipes are particularly rich in each of four key nutrients (iron, folic acid, fiber and calcium). The Nutrition section contains good, readable information on nutrition. Even if you already have a good command of nutritional basics, as I did, this is good material.
The Recipes section is what I bought THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK for, and what I give mixed reviews to. On the plus side, there are some very good, very nutritious recipes in here, including a number of dishes my husband gives an enthusiastic thumbs-up to. Issues I have with the recipes:
- Some of these recipes took me 1 1/2 - 2 hours to prepare, at least the first time. The time estimate given was nowhere close to that.
- The author's short time estimates for prep time either assume that you already have everything peeled and chopped/sliced or that you prep foods much faster than I do. Perhaps they are based on your having a food processor?
- Many recipes contain ingredients that I cannot easily find in a mainstream grocery store.
- Uncommon ingredients are not always glossed with an explanation, and no substitution is offered. For example, a recipe using pappardelle looked appealing. I had a vague idea that pappardelle was a type of pasta. Googling it confirmed that for me, and also let me know that fettuccine is a workable substitute. Checking at my grocery store, I found that indeed we do not have pappardelle, and I will be trying that recipe with fettuccine.
- Not all recipes are as well written a set of instructions as they could be. For example, starting the water for pasta was listed as step 7 of 8 on one recipe I tried last week. Fortunately, I preread the recipe and realized that needed to be step 1. Another recipe had me scrambling when it told me to do something with "the vegetables," except that it turned out that "the vegetables" did not include the red peppers, which were being reserved for another step.
- Serving sizes seem to be overly generous. Recipes described as providing "four main course servings" offer more like six at my house. I don't mind this a lot, but I have learned to plan for lots of leftovers when using these recipes.
- Sections could have been more clearly labeled visually. Finding the first trimester recipes was easy enough, but the only way to find the low calorie first trimester recipes is to find the end of the section and then flip forwards to look for the page that states that the low cal recipes start there.
- The introduction says that this revised version contains simpler recipes. For me, many of these still seem fairly complex. I use this for a couple of special dishes a week, rather than a source of everyday help. At my house, the pregnant woman is also the cook, so simpler is more of interest to me!
There are some recipes in here that I think are very, very good. If you get THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK, I recommend trying: potatoes stuffed with spinach and broccoli (p. 195); spaghetti with turkey sausage, red bell peppers, onions and tomatoes (p. 207; my husband loves this); chilled sesame noodles with vegetables (p. 241, another winner with my husband, though we like a less sweet sauce); rigatoni with wild mushroom ragu (p. 244); chicken, broccoli and mushroom stroganoff (p. 247); turkey sausage with white beans, tomatoes and basil (p. 278; we didn't find lean turkey Italian sausage so we use lean turkey sausage and throw in some Italian spices).
As you may be able to guess from that list of recipes, my other comment would be that THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK has a definite Italian-American slant. There is nothing wrong with that, but you do want to know!

The Healthy Pregnancy Cookbook: Eating Twice as Well for a Healthy Baby Review

I bought this book when I was pregnant hoping that it would help me eat right. While the recipes might be healthy, the actual recipes itself aren't too tasty. Also, the pictures don't do it justice. I think I found about three recipes that I actually liked in this book. And these three recipes weren't super great. The times I did make them, I made them mostly since they were healthy and not so much for taste. For me, this wasn't the best book of recipes for pregnant women and if I had done it again, I probably wouldn't have purchased this book. My advice for anyone looking to buy this book is that you should go to a bookstore and look through it. That way you can see for yourself whether you would really like the recipes in this book and if this is something you would really want.

Multiple Sclerosis and Having a Baby: Everything You Need to Know about Conception, Pregnancy, and Parenthood Review

This is the worst book I have ever read.
First of all, it bases its "findings" on academic studies that are out of date and contradictory. The book gives no "conclusions" about any topic, but instead presents every piece of research done. She includes research that was conducted before the medical community had a strong understanding of MS and research conducted even before disease modifying medications were developed. To make matters worse, the does nothing to summarize or explain the findings in a meaningful way.
Furthermore, the author's tone and language is incredibly offensive. She refers to people with multiple sclerosis as "disabled" throughout and even goes so far as to suggest that they are "deteriorating". In her relationships section of the book she says something to the extent that people with MS might not be able to find relationships, but don't worry because there are plenty of other disabled people longing for companionship. As if those with MS are unworthy of affection from someone without a chronic illness. Or, my personal favorite, she claims that MS can make existing relationships hard now that one person in the relationship is deteriorating. This kind of language is prevalent throughout the book.
Painfully brief excerpts from patient stories are included. It's nice to hear whether someone experienced a relapse after giving birth, for example, but you don't know anything else about them - how long had they had MS, what form of MS they have, how soon after birth did they return to medication, what did their relapse rate look like before becoming pregnant? Without any context, these tid-bits are useless. And the ones about bad experiences are particularly nerve wracking.
Overall, this book was not in the least bit informative, and does a lot to damage spirit and hope. I'd suggest that you save yourself the money and just have a good chat with your Neurologist and OBGYN.

Multiple Sclerosis and Having a Baby: Everything You Need to Know about Conception, Pregnancy, and Parenthood Overview

An essential resource for anyone with MS who is considering having a child.
' Firsthand advice from a woman with multiple sclerosis who has successfully borne and raised a child.

' Contains information that can change the lives of many of the 250,000 women in the United States suffering from MS.

' Highly readable format puts the facts at your fingertips.

Diagnosed with MS at twenty-eight, author Judy Graham gave birth for the first time at the age of thirty-eight. Her new book Multiple Sclerosis and Having a Baby provides other women who are considering starting a family with the kind of genuine and useful insight that comes only from firsthand experience. Multiple Sclerosis and Having a Baby makes available not only the medical answers prospective parents need, but also the practical suggestions and sound advice that will help them meet the many unique and sometimes difficult challenges that face couples living with MS.

In this highly informative and readable book, Graham asks and provides answers for nearly every question a woman with multiple sclerosis might want to consider before having a baby. With the latest medical facts and valuable data culled from hundreds of interviews with women who have multiple sclerosis and are currently raising a child, Graham straightforwardly addresses such issues as the possibility of relapse, genetic predisposition to MS, sexuality and fertility, pregnancy, postnatal care, and breastfeeding as they relate to women with MS.
