Calm Birth: New Method for Conscious Childbirth Review

I LOVE this book!!! It is VERY difficult to find a book about labor and delivery that is focused on natural, holistic philosophies. Of the few that are out there, this is by far the best! I started out with other, more well known approaches and appreciated the general nature of the techniques, but found them lacking in spiritual depth and feeling somewhat superficial. If you just want techniques, they may be good approaches for you. However, I was looking for something that had a deep, philsophical foundation in addition to great techniques. What I love about this book is how it talks about the entire process of pregnancy, labor/delivery, and postpartun care. It is truly an holistic approach and I am grateful to have stumbled upon it!! I can't wait to read the author's other books!

Calm Birth: New Method for Conscious Childbirth Overview

The "trauma of childbirth" is a commonly heard phrase, but one that Calm Birth authoritatively counters. Beginning with a history of the repression of women as midwives and healers and a look at the lingering legacy of that time, the book shows how to restore childbirth to its sacred status. Calm Birth combines three proven practices that together create a powerful new approach. These practices—relaxation, meditation, and healing—combine with current scientific knowledge to nurture the expectant mother's natural ability to give birth in true harmony with her body and with her infant. The book contextualizes the multilayered Calm Birth method within the existing literature of mind/body medicine and meditation science, as well as the meditation traditions from which two of the methods originate. The author complements the thoughts of renowned experts including Carlos Castaneda and Carolyn Myss with eight inspiring case studies of women who have experienced calm births.

Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn (4th Edition): The Complete Guide Review

While looking through pregnancy books, I got tired of reading about how you got a second line, got sick, got fat, and squeezed out your "bundle of joy." What about the reality of the situation and how exactly that "bundle of joy" finds its way out of me and into this world?
I could not be happier with my purchase of this book. It starts with a few chapters on the typical progression of mother and baby during pregnancy. It includes exercise and diet tips (with pictures) for pregnant women. There is a chapter on complications during pregnancy as well as one on how to plan for a birth. Birth plans are discussed in good detail, as well as interview questions for your OB/Midwife/Doula. In fact, there are different lists for each of those. Although doulas are discussed, this book does not assume you will have either a medicated or a natural birth. Those decisions are left to you.
There are several chapters on labor and delivery. It was extremely informational to learn about the different "stages" and how they progress, as well as positions and situations to help ease the pain during each of these stages. I feel like I'm much more informed about labor now than with any other resource I've come across. Does the phrase "perineal stretches" sound familiar? It does now!
The final few chapters review what to do once the baby enters the world. How do you breastfeed? How do you position your child? How many times should you feed each day and how many wet/poopy diapers should you expect? What are some common causes for concern? Answers to all of these questions are provided, as well as illustrations for breastfeeding, holding your newborn, etc.
There are a few paragraphs scattered throughout this book for Dads, but this book is not geared directly towards men. I'm sure they would find it very informative, although the squeamish ones might shy away.
I give this book four thumbs up (two from me, two from my baby in utero). I finally feel like I am better informed. This book respects you as a mother and aims to give you information in a very easy readable format.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn: The Complete Guide (medically updated) Review

We looked at, and tried to read, many pregnancy books, including the big names ("What to expect...", The Sears' book, and the Unofficial guide) that you see recommended everywhere. None of them hold a candle to this book. The best of those seem to focus on comforting couples through the experience. Often presenting redundant information between months, and not going into very much physiological detail.

In contrast this book gave us what we were really looking for, honest to goodness data. Its written by professional childbirth educators, and is an education in itself. It's focused on the kind of in depth information your healthcare provider knows, and may or may not have time to tell you about. It won't give you advice on finding clothes that fit, it will tell you why your sense of taste totally changes, and what is going on in the body to cause that.
No amount of soft peddling is going to change the fact that being pregnant is like having your body abducted by aliens. What we wanted is a book to help us understand what was happening, so the seemingly unrelated changes made sense too. What we want to know is what are the aliens doing with my body, why, and are they going to put it back when they're done. This book helps answer a lot of that, even stuff we hadn't thought to wonder about yet.
If you're remotely technical, and like knowing how stuff works this is the best book we've found. However, it may not help much to validate your emotional mood swings, nor tell you when to ask for maternity leave.

Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn: The Complete Guide (medically updated) Overview

It is well organized for easy reading and quick reference. There are more than 45 charts and 150 photographs and illustrations to clarify the information -- more graphic aids than any other childbirth book. The most up-to-date. It includes the latest information on clinical tests and procedures in pregnancy, childbirth, and early infancy. It also covers concerns regarding the emotional aspects of childbearing, the partner's role, comfort measures, high-risk pregnancies, medications, vaginal birth after cesarean, breastfeeding, and understanding infant behavior.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Prayers And Promises for Supernatural Childbirth Review

Jackie Mize's book is the most wonderful faith filled book for those who are pregnant, want to be pregnant or those who have suffered the loss of a miscarriage.

Prayers And Promises for Supernatural Childbirth Overview

A Bundle of Joy for Every Woman Whose Heart Longs to be a MommyTen million people each year suffer—often in private shame and pain—because they've been told that they can never conceive children of their own as a couple (literally billions of dollars are spent each year on fertility cures); or because they've been conditioned to believe that it's normal to struggle through a painful and difficult pregnancy; or because they fear whether they have what it takes to be affirming, joyful parents.Jackie Mize—who was told it was impossible for her to have a baby and who is now the mother of four beautiful children—provides readers with a supernatural answer. Filled with powerful and intimate scriptural prayers, this little book gives readers a way to come before Father God in faith with issues from having a difficult time getting pregnant to joyfully cradling that precious gift from God in their arms.By taking an expectant mother—or a woman who desperately wants to be expecting—through God's promises for her and her baby's future, Prayers and Promises for Supernatural Childbirth is a bundle of joy that delivers hope and encouragement, while chasing away doubts and fears.Specific issues covered in the scriptural prayers include: fulfillment over barrenness; the threat ofmiscarriage; a joyful delivery day; and dedicating one's baby to God.

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth Review

This is the best book I've ever seen in regards to condensing current research on childbirth into readable and understandable terms. The author gives clear and concise descriptions of various OB procedures and interventions that are easy to follow. She gives pros and cons of each [working within her own bias, which she does freely admit]. I think this would be an excellent book for any couple expecting an uncomplicated birth to read. This is information that every pregnant woman *should* have access to in order to make good decisions.
However, there is definitely an anti-OB bias [which the author admits] and this isn't a book designed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy about a hospital birth. Be aware of that going into this - the author raises very important but possibly disturbing points for those planning a hospital birth with an Obstetrician in attendance.
My only dissappointment with the book is that there was no chapter on assisted delivery [vacuum cap and forceps]. I would very much have liked to see a chapter on the pros and cons of these common procedures and their safety for mother and baby. There is only one page that has a small bit of information on this, but no extensive discussion or gathering of the research data available. It seems a glaring omission from an otherwise excellent and complete book.

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth Overview

Every intelligent, informed woman is used to gathering the most complete information she can get before making a decision. But when it comes to one of the most important decisions in her life--how she will give birth--it can be tough to get the complete picture, even from an obstetrician.Surprisingly, much of the latest research goes against common medical opinion. Certified Lamaze instructor and activist Henci Goer brings women the carefully researched facts they'll want to have. Based on the latest medical studies and literature, The Thinking Woman's Guide To A Better Birth offers clear, concise information on tests, procedures and treatments--and gives advice about:* cesareans * ultrasound * gestational diabetes * breech babies * inducing labor * IVs * electronic fetal monitoring * ruptured membranes * epidurals * episiotomies * vaginal birth after a cesarean * midwives and obstetricians * alternative birthing methods * choosing a birth location * drugs and delivery * elective induction * professional labor support * and much more * Author is a certified Lamaze instructor and doula who counsels women on their childbirth experiences * Author belongs to the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services * Drawn upon the most up-to-date medical literature and studies * Written in an accessible, understandable style, explaining technical medical terms * Gives advice to women who were dissatisfied with their first birth experience

Preparing for a Healthy Baby: A Pregnancy Book (English and Spanish Edition) Review

I received Preparing for a Healthy Baby from my OBGYN when I was pregnant with my first child. I loved it so much I gave my only copy to my sister, who after carrying it with her for two pregnancies can't seem to find it. I was desperate to find a copy of the book again now that I am pregnant with my second. This book answered all the millions of questions I had and let me, and my husband, and my doctor get some sleep at night. It was easy to read and find the exact section I was looking for. I was so glad I found this on Amazon I bought four copies for my sister, cousins, and myself. You should not have a baby with out having this book at your fingertips.

A Good Birth, A Safe Birth : Choosing and Having the Childbirth Experience You Want, Third Revised Edition (Non) Review

The birth of my first son did not go as I had wished, it ended up being an overly medicalized affair. I thought I had read enough and educated myself enough but I was wrong. I wanted a second child but was more scared of childbirth after having gone through that bad experience. Knowing there had to be a better way, I began reading more books. I read a dozen books before and during my second pregnancy. Each book had a different twist and something to learn from. These authors make bold statements regarding childbirth issues, compared with some of the popular mainstream childbirth books. But just when I was thinking that maybe they were wrong, they cited a reference. Everything these authors state is backed up by references and is credible. The reference section that lists these studies is 34 pages long! There is a very detailed index, which is helpful.
One unique feature this book has is a wonderful chapter on why OB/GYN physicians do what they do. It is explained in detail how the training of an OB is medical in nature, that they are trained to look for and solve medical problems and that they are surgeons by training. This was the only book that really explains in detail why a midwife and an OB have different attitudes toward pregnancy (a medical event vs. a normal life process for a woman). The authors don't doctor-bash, but are very clear about why things happen the way they do in a hospital setting and/or with an OB as the health care provider.
For those interested in home birth, it is discussed and cited as the most safe for both mother and baby, and the references are there (for anyone who doubts that issue).
This book was so full of good information that I ended up highlighting many passages, which I usually never do (as I want to keep my books clean). To get the birth that one desires, one must know much of this information before beginning care with a health care provider. I urge anyone considering pregnancy to research the childbirth issue in the beginning. The chapter on controlling the progress of labor and pain relief is very enlightening and should be mandatory reading for all pregnant women. In the end I realized that we have to advocate for our own healthcare, by choosing a provider whom we trust and who shares the same concepts on pregnancy, labor and delivery. This book covers topics such as what your options for birth are, different types of health care providers, different types of birth settings, OB training and belief system, how to find a provider, questions to ask your provider and hospital, cesareans: why they are popular and when are they medically necessary?, getting support, the nurses role, childbirth support, doulas, and the woman's emotions. The overall tone of the book is positive and "matter of fact".
Oh, and in the end I had the birth I wanted, a normal birth in a hospital setting, with no interventions at all, attended by my midwife, my doula, my husband, and I delivered a healthy 11 lb. 11 oz. baby boy!

A Good Birth, A Safe Birth : Choosing and Having the Childbirth Experience You Want, Third Revised Edition (Non) Overview

Ask a Midwife Review

I borrowed this book from the library and referred to it several times during the first months of my pregnancy. Like other books from this publisher, the information is well-organized and concise with lots of graphs and photos. It's by no means encyclopedic though; for more in-depth info you may want to supplement this book with the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, or a similar tome.

Ask a Midwife Overview

All your pregnancy and birth questions answered by experienced midwives. What's best to eat during pregnancy? How many minutes apart should my contractions be? What's a great tip for a good night's sleep? When it comes to dispensing care, advice and friendly reassurance during pregnancy and labour, midwives are the health professionals mothers want to turn to. You can find 1,000 real-life questions to midwives, answered with up-to-date information you can trust. It covers everything you need to know from conception to the first weeks of life with a new baby. It draws on the experience of long-term midwife Catherine Parker-Littler. "Ask A Midwife" is like having your own a midwife on call, 24 hours a day.

Homebirth in the Hospital: Integrating Natural Childbirth with Modern Medicine Review

I just finished reading Homebirth in the Hospital: Integrating Natural Childbirth with Modern Medicine by Stacey Marie Kerr, a family practice physician. Kerr has an unusual background for a medical doctor; she lived for several years on The Farm, gave birth to her first baby in a birthing clinic and her second at home, and then entered medical school in her mid-30s. She strongly supports the midwifery model of care in a hospital setting. Her book explains more about her approach to birth, which she calls "integrative childbirth." She argues that by integrating the midwifery model of care with the best that modern medicine has to offer, a woman can have the "best of both worlds."
Dr. Kerr's book begins with a brief explanation of her childbirth philosophies. Next, chapter 2 explains what she means by "homebirth in the hospital." Written specifically for expectant parents, she outlines five essential elements for a successful integrative childbirth: choice, communication, continuity, confidence and trust, and control of protocols. Dr. Kerr supports natural childbirth and encourages women to birth at home or in birth centers if that is what they desire. However, she acknowledges that most women feel safer and more comfortable in a hospital setting and that the empowerment of a home birth can still be experienced in a hospital setting. She writes:
"If we combine the two styles, basing our initial care plan on the midwifery model and using the medical technology only when necessary to save lives and to serve the needs of laboring women, we have a true integration: the best of both worlds."
After these two introductory chapters, the bulk of the book contains fifteen different birth stories, including those of Kerr's two children. Each story is told through the words of the parents. Kerr also offers a brief introduction and commentary to each birth story. Some of these births were with Dr. Kerr, while others were with other integrative family physicians.
Kerr concludes with a chapter written specifically for physicians on how to practice integrative childbirth. This chapter largely repeats what was written in chapter 2. She stresses the same key elements--communication, continuity, confidence and trust, and control of protocols--from a health care provider's point of view.
I would recommend this book for pregnant women who are seeking mainstream medical care or who, due to certain circumstances, cannot choose an out-of-hospital birth. It explains how the judicious, rather than routine, use of medical technology is appropriate. For those women already immersed in natural childbirth/midwifery/home birth/unassisted ways of thinking, the book will be less useful.
Now for some nit-picking: I do have issues with the phrase "homebirth in the hospital" and with the idea that a hospital birth with an integrative physician is "the best of both worlds." Kerr argues that the key elements of home birth are "satisfaction and empowerment." However, there are other elements of giving birth at home that cannot be transposed to an institutional setting. One could certainly argue that, however satisfying or empowering, a hospital birth can never be a home birth. Not to say that one is inherently superior--just that they are inherently different, and to respect that difference. Some of the best elements of a home birth cannot really exist in a hospital setting, and likewise some of the best parts of modern medicine--especially its strengths at responding to life-threatening emergencies--cannot exist at home. The idea that there is a "best of both worlds" implies that there is an ideal way to approach childbirth, rather than acknowledging that what is best for one woman might be terrible for another.
I also worry that women who read this book may become lulled into a false sense of security that they can "have it all" when, in fact, most physicians do not practice like Dr. Kerr. I know some fabulous family doctors who do, but they are usually rarities in their communities.
Despite these concerns, I am glad that Dr. Kerr has written Homebirth in the Hospital and hope that it will inspire more physicians to adopt integrative medicine. I also hope that it will spur women into thinking more critically and carefully about their maternity care choices.

Homebirth in the Hospital: Integrating Natural Childbirth with Modern Medicine Overview

The personalized and empowering experience of a home birth can also occur in a hospital setting. This book presents fifteen powerful testimonies about this kind of emotionally satisfying birth. The stories show that expectant mothers can minimize fear and put technology where it belongs.Dr. Kerr focuses on the Five C's: Choice, Communication, Continuity, Confidence, and Control of protocols. Prospective parents will learn what questions to ask when searching for a provider and how to make their hospital birth the fulfilling experience they desire.

Holistic Pregnancy and Childbirth Review

I order this book right after I bought another holistic pregnancy book "The Natural Pregnancy Book" by Aviva Jill Romm (I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is seriously intersted in natural and holistic pregnancy). Unlike Romm's "natural" approach to the pregnancy, this book seems a little too preachy and less "holistic" and "natural" than I expected. It has too much of the "official outlines" from the traditional medical practices and rather than encouraging and celebrating prengancy, they overemphasize on the threat of miscarriage and do not provide enough information for preventing it. It gives a general overview of holistic treatment and what goes on during pregnancy, so I think this is an okay book for those who just heard of "holistic treatment" but don't know what they really are. I was dissapointed overall and I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is looking into a good natural/holistic pregnancy book.

I really love this book. I just gave it to three different friends who are having their first baby. The book is fun and I found it helpful to have a book which reminds me that there are lots of things I can do to feel pretty and attractive while my body goes through so many changes. I did not get it for a lot of technical or medical info, but for a cute, funny, darling, up-beat short read with great prose and a great attitude. I have given 10 copies as gifts so far and will definetely continue to do so. Get this book for your friends pregnant for the first time or the 5th - it is a lot of fun and you can learn a bunch of important things from it, too. Many ideas are original and I have not seen them discussed in any of the many different pregnancy and child development books I've read.

Easy Labor: Every Woman's Guide to Choosing Less Pain and More Joy During Childbirth Review

As a childbirth educator and founder of Hypnobabies, I very much enjoyed seeing the authors provide us all such a nicely balanced collection of ideas for being more confident and comfortable during childbirth. I always love to see expectant moms research their choices for childbirth and this book has many. Easy Labor starts out with excellent information on choosing your birthing environment and caregivers, addressing childbirth fears and concerns, and giving wonderful resources.
The next section is all about epidurals and medications for birthing, with the information women need about the benefits, risks and side effects for each one as well as how and when they are administered, and how a birth partner can help if meds are chosen. Especially helpful are the comments from caregivers and mothers who have experienced using these medications for childbirth. There is even a chapter on medication for Cesarean births that answers many questions for women.
Of course the part of the book I am most impressed with is the section on Complementary and Alternative Approaches to Labor-Pain Relief. The authors very sensitively and concisely researched various forms of "CAMS" (complimentary and alternative medicine) from natural childbirth classes and waterbirthing to using hypnosis, acupuncture, aromatherapy and labor support. Resources are given throughout and the information is very comprehensive.
Incredibly fascinating are the chapters on the history of pain relief in childbirth and the birth stories from medical caregivers - their own birth stories! Doulas, OBs, nurses and midwives tell what they experienced, learned, and found helpful for their own baby's births. They also share perspectives on how their own attitudes impact their patient's childbirth experience. Great book. Get it, read it!

Husband-Coached Childbirth (Fifth Edition): The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth Review

I read about the Bradley Method of Natural childbirth during my early months of pregnancy, was intrigued, and bought this book. I really found it helpful-- I got my husband to read it too. While the book's complete lack of pictures tended to be frustrating at times, especially in the exercise section, I found that having to read the actual description made me pay more attention and helped me remember what to do. After I read and understood the description, I wasn't dependent on the picture to do it right. The breathing description Dr. Bradley gives is the best thing I did during my labor -- before going into labor I found it also helps with headaches :) -- and they did not teach it in my Bradley class. After finishing Husband Coached Childbirth, I ended up wanting a book with pictures, and bought Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way as well. Between these two books I had a very pleasant birth experience with no pain medications. And after reading them, the Bradley classes themselves were overkill.
I did like Husband Coached Childbirth quite a bit and got a lot of information from it, however, I do not think you need to own it. After reading it through once, I never felt compelled to go back and read it again. I would suggest checking this one out from your local library, reading it through, especially the breathing description, and purchasing Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way instead.

Pea in a Pod: Your Complete Guide to Pregnancy, Childbirth & Beyond Review

I'm in my third pregnancy and thought there was nothing new to learn. Wrong! My mother-in-law gave me PEA IN A POD in my second month, and it has become my bible. It answers questions I didn't even know I had! Its organization and user-friendly layout makes it easy to find any topic. All the info is up-to-date, including lists of resources on every subject. An added bonus are the "extras," the many photos, charts, tips, and cartoon drawings. My husband has even consulted it more than once. Don't let the "cute" cover fool you. This book is a serious and complete pregnancy guide. If you are going to get just one pregnancy book, this is the one to get.

The Expectant Parents' Companion: Simplifying What to Do, Buy, or Borrow for an Easy Life With Baby Review

I have never written a review on Amazon before, but this book compelled me to do so because I have found it so helpful. While I agree with the reviewer who said the book is biased (Huggins' preferences for breastfeeding, natural birth, etc. come out loud and clear), it is still an incredibly useful resource for someone like me--a first-time mom who knows absolutely nothing! I have no younger siblings, rarely babysat, and just generally have not spent much time around infants, so I'm going into parenthood with a totally blank slate. For this reason, I've been looking for someone or something that could tell me what is necessary to do and buy and what is not. (Prior to reading it, I couldn't have told you what a "layette" or a "bumper" was, and I certainly would not have known what to do with a "nasal aspirator.") Registering for my baby shower made me realize how saturated the market is with all kinds of gadgets that scream "buy me!" but personally, I can't afford to buy out the baby section at Target. And I'm not so hypnotized by marketing that I believe I need it all. Huggins breaks down not only what products are necessary for your baby's care, but also what might be better to borrow than to buy. She also offers suggestions for making or doing things yourself instead of paying for them (breast pads, for instance, cut out of diapers)--welcome advice for anyone on a budget! The book is recent enough (2006) that its information on actual products, name brands, etc. is totally up-to-date, a fact I also appreciated. I highly recommend this book for sorting through all the overwhelming purchasing and planning decisions, big and small, you will face as you prepare for parenthood.

The Expectant Parents' Companion: Simplifying What to Do, Buy, or Borrow for an Easy Life With Baby Overview

This is the ultimate, all-around baby guide. Not only does it help you navigate the dizzying array of baby products or gear, it also helps you get ready for baby in numerous ways, from preparing for birth, to feeding your newborn, to sleeping arrangements, and to making your home safe for baby. Most other baby-gear guides make you think you need to build on an extra room in your house to accommodate all the necessary items. However, Kathleen Huggins' years of experience with moms and newborns have taught her what you'll need, what you'll want, and what you can definitely do without.

Pushed: The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care Review

Exactly 3 years ago I walked into one of the finest maternity hospitals in NJ to deliver my first baby. I was low risk - under 30, no complications - and was expected to have a smooth delivery.
11 hours later I was laying in a bed by myself staring at a ceiling, completely shell shocked, and without my baby, husband or family, I was immobilized in a recovery room with a gaping wound in my belly while my new daughter was off in the nursery. I had no idea what went wrong. It seemed that I had simply stopped dilating or "failed to progress."
As I read Jennifer Block's book, I just nodded as it all became very clear - the insistence by the staff that we would just hurry things up a little by performing an amniotomy (breaking my water) when I was still in early labor. That was followed by pitocin (to "really" get things moving), stadol (a narcotic pain reliever), an epidural and finally, a c-section. My labor was simply one of many completely over-managed and over controlled labors in American hospitals. They finally decided that a c-section was the only way to end my labor. I was lead to believe my labor was a "problem" and a "complication" and surgery was the only answer.
I wish this book could become mandatory reading for all women who are planning a hospital delivery. Contrary to recent reports (as discussed in this book), very few women are actually requesting a c-section on a completely voluntary basis. Years ago I was "pushed" by the obstetrical community into an unwanted delivery experience.
Today I am pregnant with my second child. And I am pushing back.

Born in the USA: How a Broken Maternity System Must Be Fixed to Put Women and Children First Review

This book includes the most comprehensive description of what's wrong with the US maternity care system and what should be done about it that I've ever read. It's well organized, well referenced, and--considering the scope of the problem--even optimistic. Dr. Wagner used to work in maternal child health in the World Health Organization, and his wide experience of maternity care systems all over the world adds necessary perspective to the discussion about how women should give birth, who decides, and why one might want to consider about all this before having a baby, instead of afterward. The chapter on the witch-hunt against US midwives is essential reading for anyone who cares about the status of women and babies. The chapter on the culture of medicine and how this is enforced is fascinating and horrifying. The book is must reading for those who think that our country can't hope to put together a system that works better for mothers and babies--and waste less money while we're at it. It should be required for anyone in the field of maternity care: nurses, physicians, midwives, childbirth educators, doulas, policy makers, lawmakers, judges--the list goes on and on.
Truly a great achievement. I hope this book gets the reading it deserves.
If it does, I believe that people will make our lawmakers follow the recommendations that Wagner makes at the end of the book.
