Easy Exercises for Pregnancy Review

During the last trimester when I was more uncomfortable, the exercises I did from this book helped me to relax. Since I was walking, sitting and sleeping differently (than before getting pregnant), the exercises in this book helped me to stretch muscles safely and also to meditate/relax tight muscles. This was extremely helpful during the last week of my pregnancy, since my baby was pinching my psiatic nerve in my lower back. A few exercises helped my body to better deal with this type of discomfort.

Hygieia: A Woman's Herbal Review

The author says, "This book grew out of our need to be healthy and re-own the powers of naturally healing ourselves". Contains three indices, a glossary of mythological, feminist and gynecological terms, and blank pages in the back for notetaking. There are also herbal lists for emenogogues, infertility, temporary and permanant sterility, anaphrodesiacs, aphrodesiacs, reproductive organs and your cycle, pregnancy, childbirth and lactation. here's a short synopsis.... chapter #1 - "on the rag" and other menstrual rituals (contains pattern for making your own menstral pads) #2 - fertility #3 - herbal birth control #4 - anaphrodesiacs #5 - aphrodesiacs #6 - herbs for the mind #7 - self health - what's the matter, coming off the pill #8 - balancers and toners (herbs for the cycle and reproductive organs) #9 - pregnancy, childbirth, lactation (plus placenta recipes, celestial influences) #10 - menopause: the change
This is a very comprehensive, useful, and entertaining book. I like to just open it up at random and read a chapter. Or, when I want specific advise, I can just look in the index and turn to whatever pages fit. I find I get so engrossed, though, that I just can't stop! I especially like the letters from women and the dream interpretations"

Intrapartum Management Modules: A Perinatal Education Program (Martin, Intrapartum Management Modules) Review

This book was what I used as a new graduate to learn L&D. It is very easy to use and has all the necessary information for basic learning. When I changed hospitals I used this book to orietent new nurses.

Intrapartum Management Modules: A Perinatal Education Program (Martin, Intrapartum Management Modules) Overview

The revised Fourth Edition of this essential text contains 19 modules that guide the reader from assessment of the pregnant woman and her fetus, through labor and delivery, to postpartum evaluation and care. Each module is carefully developed to enhance self-paced learning and skills attainment, perfect for competence validation and orientation.
The text illustrates the essentials of intrapartum care. Step-by-step "How to's" (Skill Units) guide the nurse from fetal monitoring to management of high risk situations. This edition has new modules on cultural competence and OB Emergencies, including hemorrhage and Caesarian delivery "on demand", and new content on legal accountability, maternal and newborn transport, electronic fetal monitoring, and domestic violence assessment. This revision has been guided by two new co-authors, Margaret Betsy B. Kennedy of the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, and Donna J. Ruth of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Homebirth in the Hospital: Integrating Natural Childbirth with Modern Medicine Review

I just finished reading Homebirth in the Hospital: Integrating Natural Childbirth with Modern Medicine by Stacey Marie Kerr, a family practice physician. Kerr has an unusual background for a medical doctor; she lived for several years on The Farm, gave birth to her first baby in a birthing clinic and her second at home, and then entered medical school in her mid-30s. She strongly supports the midwifery model of care in a hospital setting. Her book explains more about her approach to birth, which she calls "integrative childbirth." She argues that by integrating the midwifery model of care with the best that modern medicine has to offer, a woman can have the "best of both worlds."
Dr. Kerr's book begins with a brief explanation of her childbirth philosophies. Next, chapter 2 explains what she means by "homebirth in the hospital." Written specifically for expectant parents, she outlines five essential elements for a successful integrative childbirth: choice, communication, continuity, confidence and trust, and control of protocols. Dr. Kerr supports natural childbirth and encourages women to birth at home or in birth centers if that is what they desire. However, she acknowledges that most women feel safer and more comfortable in a hospital setting and that the empowerment of a home birth can still be experienced in a hospital setting. She writes:
"If we combine the two styles, basing our initial care plan on the midwifery model and using the medical technology only when necessary to save lives and to serve the needs of laboring women, we have a true integration: the best of both worlds."
After these two introductory chapters, the bulk of the book contains fifteen different birth stories, including those of Kerr's two children. Each story is told through the words of the parents. Kerr also offers a brief introduction and commentary to each birth story. Some of these births were with Dr. Kerr, while others were with other integrative family physicians.
Kerr concludes with a chapter written specifically for physicians on how to practice integrative childbirth. This chapter largely repeats what was written in chapter 2. She stresses the same key elements--communication, continuity, confidence and trust, and control of protocols--from a health care provider's point of view.
I would recommend this book for pregnant women who are seeking mainstream medical care or who, due to certain circumstances, cannot choose an out-of-hospital birth. It explains how the judicious, rather than routine, use of medical technology is appropriate. For those women already immersed in natural childbirth/midwifery/home birth/unassisted ways of thinking, the book will be less useful.
Now for some nit-picking: I do have issues with the phrase "homebirth in the hospital" and with the idea that a hospital birth with an integrative physician is "the best of both worlds." Kerr argues that the key elements of home birth are "satisfaction and empowerment." However, there are other elements of giving birth at home that cannot be transposed to an institutional setting. One could certainly argue that, however satisfying or empowering, a hospital birth can never be a home birth. Not to say that one is inherently superior--just that they are inherently different, and to respect that difference. Some of the best elements of a home birth cannot really exist in a hospital setting, and likewise some of the best parts of modern medicine--especially its strengths at responding to life-threatening emergencies--cannot exist at home. The idea that there is a "best of both worlds" implies that there is an ideal way to approach childbirth, rather than acknowledging that what is best for one woman might be terrible for another.
I also worry that women who read this book may become lulled into a false sense of security that they can "have it all" when, in fact, most physicians do not practice like Dr. Kerr. I know some fabulous family doctors who do, but they are usually rarities in their communities.
Despite these concerns, I am glad that Dr. Kerr has written Homebirth in the Hospital and hope that it will inspire more physicians to adopt integrative medicine. I also hope that it will spur women into thinking more critically and carefully about their maternity care choices.

Homebirth in the Hospital: Integrating Natural Childbirth with Modern Medicine Overview

The personalized and empowering experience of a home birth can also occur in a hospital setting. This book presents fifteen powerful testimonies about this kind of emotionally satisfying birth. The stories show that expectant mothers can minimize fear and put technology where it belongs.Dr. Kerr focuses on the Five C's: Choice, Communication, Continuity, Confidence, and Control of protocols. Prospective parents will learn what questions to ask when searching for a provider and how to make their hospital birth the fulfilling experience they desire.

The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby : A Week-by-Week Guide to Your Pregnancy Review

There's a new book, The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby by Nikki Bradford that incorporates prenatal psychological development and bonding as part of "A Week-by-Week Guide to Your Pregnancy". This is now my current top recommendation about the changes of pregnancy. Overall, it's outstanding.
Some particularly interesting points:
p. 125 - "Labor pain does not come directly from your womb, but is due to ischemia, a lack of blood in the uterine muscles produced by the womb working hard. This hurts for the same reason that a heart attack or angina hurts; lack of oxygen to the muscles, and a buildup of cellular waste products which irritate nerve tissue."
I especially love the following paragraph at the end of p. 123:
"But perhaps the best news of all is that birth memories are something all future parents can influence positively, for their own children. We do not have to repeat the mistakes previous generations have made. We can, by making the transition of newborns into our world as gentle, loving, and respectful as possible, help ensure that their first -- and lasting -- impressions are good ones."
It's only by contrast with the overall excellence that the following points stand out as questionable:
p. 92 - Endorphins too large to cross placental barrier? Morphine is known to cross the placental barrier, and it's known that epidurals in a laboring woman change the baby's level of endorphins at birth. I'd like to see some research behind this claim.
p. 118 - The discussion of due dates ignores the research that shows the average healthy, well-nourished caucasian woman naturally birthing her first baby will give birth eight days after her due date. That means that half of them don't give birth until *after* eight days past the due date.
p. 127 - The picture shows a woman laboring lying flat on her back. This position is almost always significantly more painful to a laboring woman than an upright or side-lying position, and it could possibly cause circulatory problems.
p. 134 - In the discussion of how a newborn experiences birth, there is mention of a fear of dying that may go back to feeling unable to breathe immediately after birth. This section ignores the option of leaving the cord intact to continue delivering oxygenated blood to the newborn during the time it takes to convert to breathing air.
p. 137 - The picture caption describes the baby as having been gently washed, weighed, and diapered before being wrapped in a soft blanket and placed in his mother's arms. This is amazingly backward for a book about perinatal psychology. I feel quite certain that washing, weighing, diapering and swaddling are all much lower on the baby's priority list than being placed in the mother's arms. This caption also perpetuates the myth that newborns are warmer wrapped in blankets. In fact, since newborns have trouble generating their own body heat, wrapping them in layers of insulation keeps them separate from sources of heat, such as their mother's belly. The best way to warm a baby is skin-to-skin on mom's belly, all covered by a blanket. Regarding a Leboyer bath, this may have advantages, but it also has disadvantages in washing the amniotic fluid off the baby; the smell of the amniotic fluid is a clue to the baby of what breastmilk is like, and the more mother and baby continue to smell the same after birth, the better breastfeeding will go.
p. 137 - Another piece of misinformation is the recommendation to "Breastfeed right away if you can." This slogan originated in a time when babies were often separated from their mothers for many hours after birth, and there was an attempt to reduce this time to an hour or less after birth. Unfortunately, this information has been misinterpreted so that mothers are now trying to force feed their babies before they're ready to nurse. Babies are not subtle - they have no manners. When they are hungry, they will let you know. Typically, a baby's first priority is figuring out the breathing routine. Then, the baby wants to gaze at faces to help organize the visual part of the brain. Then, some time later, typically 20-30 minutes after birth, the baby becomes interested in finding the breast.

The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby : A Week-by-Week Guide to Your Pregnancy Overview

Your baby is yet to be born . . . but she's listening, learning, and aware of the outside world!
Traditionally, the world of an as-yet-unborn baby was thought to be an isolated and silent one. It was assumed that, asleep and growing in its mother's womb, the developing baby was incapable of experiencing sight, sound, thought, or emotion. In fact, the truth is very different, as bestselling author Nikki Bradford reveals here. Drawing on the latest research by leading authorities in the field, the author explains how the unborn baby's awareness of the outside world develops rapidly from very early in pregnancy.

Did you know that unborn babies respond to sound, and duck away from strong light, as early as 16 weeks? That they have been observed shying away from--and even attacking--an amniocentesis needle at around the same time? That babies follow moving light sources with their hands by 20 weeks? Or that they recognize music and nursery rhymes from 33 weeks?

The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby not only offers you unique insights into your child's remarkable mental and physical developments in the womb, but also provides wide-ranging information on pregnancy and childbirth. This information is featured in comprehensive sections on: How babies grow, week-by-week: Stunning color photographs enable you to follow the physical development of your baby. Did you know that the first heartbeat can be detected at about five weeks, and that fingernails appear by ten weeks? Your pregnancy and birth: Just how does the body cope with it all? Advice and information are provided on every stage of pregnancy. What babies can do in the womb: The latest research findings about unborn babies' emotional awareness and learning abilities; the evidence of communication (and telepathy) between babies and mothers. What unborn babies know: What babies hear, sense, experience, dream--and remember--about being born and being in the womb. Looks at babies' emotional development, including reactions to your various moods.

Nikki Bradford has written The Miraculous World of Your Unborn Baby in consultation with leading experts in the field: San Diego-based Dr. David B. Chamberlain, President of the International Association for Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Health, and arguably the world authority on prenatal psychology; Professor Geoffrey Chamberlain, past President of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the United Kingdom; and Dr. Sammy Lee, an acclaimed London-based consultant embryologist.

The Tao of Fertility: A Healing Chinese Medicine Program to Prepare Body, Mind, and Spirit for New Life Review

After I was diagnosed with cancer at the age of twenty-three, my oncologist suggested that I go to see a fertility specialist. This being that my ovaries were affected by the chemotherapy and my chances of conceiving would be drastically lowered. The fertility specialist immediately recommended many types of drugs, needles and having IVF and then an FET (Frozen Embryo Transfer). I was devastated to say the least. Few doctor's have mastered how to handle this delicate problem that plagues women today. Dr. Dao is one of them. He doesn't shy away, as if it only exists in the minds of the women facing it, instead he leads the way to hope and promise of fertility.

This book is a blessing! It speaks volumes with both knowledge and information that is easily readable and understood. Dr. Dao, Being a Taoist with their full understanding of balance, mind, body, and nature, many of these concepts were new to me and I was pleased to find that all the information given seemed logical, easy to follow and most importantly, achievable! An important aspect to women searching through the seemingly endless amount of information on this subject.

From the diets to detoxify to the daily meditation to relax the mind, there is something for everyone struggling with fertility in this book. Included are recipes, suggestions for herbal supplements, questionnaires, and charts that are easy to follow and bring hope to those trying to increase the likelihood of getting pregnant! This is an astonishing turn around in fertility books. I've read many books on this very subject and most jump into the available drug treatments, IVF, and surgical solutions used to help women with this problem.

This book includes more than the usual doctor's message of eating a sensible diet, not smoking, exercising and staying positive. Dr. Dao discusses Traditional Chinese Medicine with an equal scale toward Western Medicine. He never says one is better than the other and helps you to understand the way of the Tao and the Traditional Chinese Methods. This is the first book of this type where I've actually had the doctor prepare your body for pregnancy in both body and mind. ,

The second half of this book was beautifully done with touching vignettes of previously infertile women who now have conceived and have happy, healthy children. I find these stories not only touching, but helpful in coping with my own infertility. Hope is the first word that comes to mind.

A massive amount of information is placed in this single volume book. It's not just a self-help guide to women and couples, but an outstanding source of information that I will turn to time and time again.

The High-Risk Pregnancy Sourcebook Review

This book is good if you are looking for comfort, it is disappointing if you are looking for information. Advantages: It gives simple and clear explanations about pregnancy complications with some background, so it can be understood by almost anyone. Disadvantages: There is hardly any precise data (for example: what level of protein is considered dangerous, what is the reoccurrence rate of pre-eclampsia, etc. ). The main advice of the book is to consult your care giver, well, I bought this book because I wanted to learn more myself and ask my doctor less questions... The book has very little additional information above a normal pregnancy guide book.

The High-Risk Pregnancy Sourcebook Overview

A new edition of the guide to understanding the special circumstances of high-risk pregnancies and the various methods of enhancing the chances of having a healthy, full-term baby. The original book was published in 1997.

Birth Emergency Skills Training: Manual for Out -of- Hospital Midwives Review

I was expecting a book on how to deal with emergencies outside of a hospital setting, instead, this book was very medicalized. There is some good information in this book, but you need to know that the tone of the book is "expect the worst," and if that doesn't happen, then maybe you are okay with having an out of hospital birth.
An example is how third stage is handled. This book recommends managed third stage with chord traction and pitocin for ALL births. I believe others will be interested in knowing this before purchasing this book.

Birth Emergency Skills Training: Manual for Out -of- Hospital Midwives Overview

Midwives attending childbirth in homes and birth centers seldom encounter emergencies, but when crisis occurs, lives hang in the balance! It is difficult to remain proficient in skills so seldom practiced, yet pregnant women rely on the expertise of the provider in an emergency.
Birth Emergency Skills Training: Manual for Out-of-Hospital Midwives is the interface between the world of midwifery and the world of medicine. It carries the reader from the initial steps of intervention though definitive care, balancing a friendly tone and visual appeal with authoritative and clinically useful information. It is loaded with mnemonics and other memory aids, and is richly illustrated with the author's artful drawings and photography.

Llewellyn-Jones Fundamentals of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Review

This book is recommended by many medical schools in Australia as well as Australian Medical Council. I was disappointed after I started to read it. There are many grammar mistakes and, much worse, the author frequently used complex structure of sentences to describe many different and unrelated things. I wasted lots of time trying to understand the meaning. This really drives me crazy.

Llewellyn-Jones Fundamentals of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Overview

Quality of Care Review

I like these NAL Accent books. They're trade paperback size and on the bottom it says "Fiction for the Way We Live" - Other authors in this line include a favorite of mine, Lisa Wingate; and several books I have in my TBR pile. I even like the feel of this book. The smooth pages, the size. I also like the conversation guide in the back which includes an interview with the author as well as a discussion guide. I do admit to sometimes reading the conversation guide before the book, allowing for spoilers sometimes, but it has never ruined my enjoyment of the book itself.
I am a sucker for a good medical story and this is a doozy. Letts, a midwife herself, writes about Dr. Clara Raymond an obstetrician who is on-call but busy with another patient when a childhood friend (Lydia) who is 34 weeks pregnant arrives in labor and delivery. Lydia happened to marry Clara's former live-in boyfriend, Gordon but Clara has lost touch with the two until they show up rather unexpectedly at the hospital. Lydia has vague symptoms but since Clara is busy with the other patient, goes unattended by other than the nursing staff for a brief period of time. Soon things go tragically wrong and eventually Clara ends up taking a trip to her childhood home in California to find answers regarding her own past. This book is really well done and is a great debut by an author to watch. The California portion of the book takes place on a horse ranch and it says in the bio that the author is not only a midwife but a former competitive equestrian. I enjoyed nearly everything about this book and my only big complaint is that the book wasn't longer. For those of you who are tired of the run-of-the-mill women's fiction or coming-of-age stories, I would highly recommend QUALITY OF CARE for a great chance of pace. This is an exceptional read and I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next. It can't be too soon for me.

Quality of Care Overview

Clara Raymond is the kind of obstetrician any woman would want-caring, skilled, dedicated. But she is caught off guard when a pregnant woman is wheeled onto the labor and delivery floor with what seem to be minor complaints. The patient turns out to be Lydia Benson, a childhood friend who once saved Clara's life after a terrible horseback-riding accident. And at Lydia's side is her husband Gordon Robinson, a man whom Clara once loved passionately and then left-although she has never forgotten him. That night in the labor and delivery rooms the brief reunion goes tragically wrong. For Clara, the consequences will include a journey to California and to her own past-and a rediscovery of hope in a place she never expected.

Born in the USA: How a Broken Maternity System Must Be Fixed to Put Women and Children First Review

This book includes the most comprehensive description of what's wrong with the US maternity care system and what should be done about it that I've ever read. It's well organized, well referenced, and--considering the scope of the problem--even optimistic. Dr. Wagner used to work in maternal child health in the World Health Organization, and his wide experience of maternity care systems all over the world adds necessary perspective to the discussion about how women should give birth, who decides, and why one might want to consider about all this before having a baby, instead of afterward. The chapter on the witch-hunt against US midwives is essential reading for anyone who cares about the status of women and babies. The chapter on the culture of medicine and how this is enforced is fascinating and horrifying. The book is must reading for those who think that our country can't hope to put together a system that works better for mothers and babies--and waste less money while we're at it. It should be required for anyone in the field of maternity care: nurses, physicians, midwives, childbirth educators, doulas, policy makers, lawmakers, judges--the list goes on and on.
Truly a great achievement. I hope this book gets the reading it deserves.
If it does, I believe that people will make our lawmakers follow the recommendations that Wagner makes at the end of the book.

It's like a Qbook, but small enough that you can take with you on travels (like when doing rotations or if ur trying to do Step 2 while interviewing) to give you practice with questions when you don't have access to an online Qbank. Has imaging questions too!

Your High-Risk Pregnancy: A Practical and Supportive Guide Review

Diana Raab wrote a very popular and useful book called "Getting Pregnant & Staying Pregnant" during the course of one of her own high risk pregnancies. On the twentieth anniversary of that book she has joined with Errol Norwitz an MD who specializes in high-risk obstetrics to give us this fine volume.
As an RN I usually find these books to fail in one of two directions. They are either too simple for me to learn anything or to complex to do my patients any good. This book avoids both of those objections brilliantly.
Starting with the anatomy of the human reproductive systems this book assumes no prior knowledge yet stills covers an enormous amount of material in a very useful fashion. The amount of detail and real world orientation is impressive. During a discussion on ovalutation testing with over the counter kits the author notes that some of the kits require a urine sample to be collected at midday which could be a problem for working women. This level of information is present throughout the volume.
The authors also include discussion of Alternative and Holistic Health care. They provide the facts in a non judgmental faction. There is information on herbal products with a discussion on their regulation.
There is a very understandable chapter on Genetics and a complete discussion of the multitude of tests that are used during pregnancy. The authors also clearly outline the risks vs. advantages in cases where testing is optional for the mother.
The book is nicely rounded out with a glossary, bibliography, and list of support groups and associations. The authors introduce the idea of journaling as helpful for the mother early in the book and provide questions to assist with each chapter.
All in all a fine book on a complex and often difficult subject. I recommend it highly.

Your High-Risk Pregnancy: A Practical and Supportive Guide Overview

This useful book gives sound, straightforward advice about prenatal care, analyzing and diagnosing high-risk factors, and describing the tests, medications, and procedures necessary for a healthy pregnancy. The authors offer specific ways to cope with the rollercoaster of emotions and medical issues that arise during this process. Beginning with a general guide to successful conception, the book explains the risks and addresses the most pressing concerns. Throughout the text, the authors check in with the men and women involved, showing them how to explore their feelings about the pregnancy, their emotions toward the baby, and how to build a solid support system. Each chapter contains journaling exercises, which are extremely important given the amount of bed-rest required in difficult pregnancies. Here too are informed discussions of natural birth versus C-section, the use of antibiotics and painkillers, and how to cope with miscarriages and premies. Your High-Risk Pregnancy is a complete, caring companion during pregnancy and beyond.

New Well Pregnancy Book: Completely Revised and Updated Review

I bought this book after having read all the other more popular pregnancy books, and I found this one to be my favorite. Unlike the others, it includes lots of scientific data and discussion of various studies that answer all the "why" questions I had about pregnancy. Most books tell women to eat right, exercise, and maintain a low-stress lifestyle, but they offer little in the way of explanation of how such choices affect the baby. This book thoroughly explains it all! I'm so thrilled to have found it, I'll recommend it to any pregnant woman I know who is as frustrated as I was to have felt talked-down-to by other, more vague books.

New Well Pregnancy Book: Completely Revised and Updated Overview

Now fully revised and updated to reflect the changing developments in obstetrics, The New Well Pregnancy Book is the best and most comprehensive book available for expectant parents. Written by Mike Samuels, M.D., and Nancy Samuels, authors of the bestselling Well Baby Book and Well Child Book, The New Well Pregnancy Book covers the physical and emotional stages of pregnancy, labor, and delivery, including information on: * RELAXATION AND NATURAL CHILDBIRTH TECHNIQUES * THE MOTHER'S EXPERIENCE OF LABOR AND DELIVERY * CESAREAN SECTION, PREGNANCY IN WOMEN OVER 35, AND HIGH-RISK PREGNANCIES * BREASTFEEDING -- HOW TO PREPARE AND HOW TO GET STARTED * FULL INFORMATION ON THE EFFECTS OF NUTRITION, EXERCISE, SEX, SMOKING, CAFFEINE, DRUGS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUBSTANCES DURING PREGNANCY The New Well Pregnancy Book also contains the latest information on the new prenatal tests and medical procedures, and the changing attitudes and preferences of new mothers, all in the down-to-earth, accessible style that the authors are known for.
