Calm Birth: New Method for Conscious Childbirth Review

I LOVE this book!!! It is VERY difficult to find a book about labor and delivery that is focused on natural, holistic philosophies. Of the few that are out there, this is by far the best! I started out with other, more well known approaches and appreciated the general nature of the techniques, but found them lacking in spiritual depth and feeling somewhat superficial. If you just want techniques, they may be good approaches for you. However, I was looking for something that had a deep, philsophical foundation in addition to great techniques. What I love about this book is how it talks about the entire process of pregnancy, labor/delivery, and postpartun care. It is truly an holistic approach and I am grateful to have stumbled upon it!! I can't wait to read the author's other books!

Calm Birth: New Method for Conscious Childbirth Overview

The "trauma of childbirth" is a commonly heard phrase, but one that Calm Birth authoritatively counters. Beginning with a history of the repression of women as midwives and healers and a look at the lingering legacy of that time, the book shows how to restore childbirth to its sacred status. Calm Birth combines three proven practices that together create a powerful new approach. These practices—relaxation, meditation, and healing—combine with current scientific knowledge to nurture the expectant mother's natural ability to give birth in true harmony with her body and with her infant. The book contextualizes the multilayered Calm Birth method within the existing literature of mind/body medicine and meditation science, as well as the meditation traditions from which two of the methods originate. The author complements the thoughts of renowned experts including Carlos Castaneda and Carolyn Myss with eight inspiring case studies of women who have experienced calm births.

Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn (4th Edition): The Complete Guide Review

While looking through pregnancy books, I got tired of reading about how you got a second line, got sick, got fat, and squeezed out your "bundle of joy." What about the reality of the situation and how exactly that "bundle of joy" finds its way out of me and into this world?
I could not be happier with my purchase of this book. It starts with a few chapters on the typical progression of mother and baby during pregnancy. It includes exercise and diet tips (with pictures) for pregnant women. There is a chapter on complications during pregnancy as well as one on how to plan for a birth. Birth plans are discussed in good detail, as well as interview questions for your OB/Midwife/Doula. In fact, there are different lists for each of those. Although doulas are discussed, this book does not assume you will have either a medicated or a natural birth. Those decisions are left to you.
There are several chapters on labor and delivery. It was extremely informational to learn about the different "stages" and how they progress, as well as positions and situations to help ease the pain during each of these stages. I feel like I'm much more informed about labor now than with any other resource I've come across. Does the phrase "perineal stretches" sound familiar? It does now!
The final few chapters review what to do once the baby enters the world. How do you breastfeed? How do you position your child? How many times should you feed each day and how many wet/poopy diapers should you expect? What are some common causes for concern? Answers to all of these questions are provided, as well as illustrations for breastfeeding, holding your newborn, etc.
There are a few paragraphs scattered throughout this book for Dads, but this book is not geared directly towards men. I'm sure they would find it very informative, although the squeamish ones might shy away.
I give this book four thumbs up (two from me, two from my baby in utero). I finally feel like I am better informed. This book respects you as a mother and aims to give you information in a very easy readable format.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Holistic Pregnancy and Childbirth Review

I order this book right after I bought another holistic pregnancy book "The Natural Pregnancy Book" by Aviva Jill Romm (I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is seriously intersted in natural and holistic pregnancy). Unlike Romm's "natural" approach to the pregnancy, this book seems a little too preachy and less "holistic" and "natural" than I expected. It has too much of the "official outlines" from the traditional medical practices and rather than encouraging and celebrating prengancy, they overemphasize on the threat of miscarriage and do not provide enough information for preventing it. It gives a general overview of holistic treatment and what goes on during pregnancy, so I think this is an okay book for those who just heard of "holistic treatment" but don't know what they really are. I was dissapointed overall and I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is looking into a good natural/holistic pregnancy book.

The Faceless Caesarean - Caesarean mothers in words and photographs. Photo book, guide and a treasure trove of experiences for pregnant women, mothers and obstetricians Review

As a cesarean veteran I'd often wondered if my scar looked 'normal' and what other women did to facilitate healing. This book is an excellent resource, complete with pictures, to assist a healing mother as well as caregivers to better understand the complex emotions women face when deprived of a normal birth. It speaks the truth and validates a woman's feelings of her experience, positive or negative.

Birth Emergency Skills Training: Manual for Out -of- Hospital Midwives Review

I was expecting a book on how to deal with emergencies outside of a hospital setting, instead, this book was very medicalized. There is some good information in this book, but you need to know that the tone of the book is "expect the worst," and if that doesn't happen, then maybe you are okay with having an out of hospital birth.
An example is how third stage is handled. This book recommends managed third stage with chord traction and pitocin for ALL births. I believe others will be interested in knowing this before purchasing this book.

Birth Emergency Skills Training: Manual for Out -of- Hospital Midwives Overview

Midwives attending childbirth in homes and birth centers seldom encounter emergencies, but when crisis occurs, lives hang in the balance! It is difficult to remain proficient in skills so seldom practiced, yet pregnant women rely on the expertise of the provider in an emergency.
Birth Emergency Skills Training: Manual for Out-of-Hospital Midwives is the interface between the world of midwifery and the world of medicine. It carries the reader from the initial steps of intervention though definitive care, balancing a friendly tone and visual appeal with authoritative and clinically useful information. It is loaded with mnemonics and other memory aids, and is richly illustrated with the author's artful drawings and photography.
What people are saying about the Birth Emergency Skills Training textbook and course

" Wow, this is comprehensive!! As an NRP instructor for 20 yrs, I liked the section on neonatal resuscitation. Great photos and resources! Loved the text and the course. "Andrea Dixon, CNM Carmel, IN
" Birth Emergency Skills Training is not only an essential guide for all midwives who attend out-of-hospital birth, but also for midwives in any care setting. The information is comprehensive, thorough, and evidence-based. It gives midwives and other birth attendants a powerful guide for practice in emergency situations while continuing to emphasize that birth is normal. In addition, the manual covers conditions that are not very common but necessitate immediate recognition and treatment. Ms. Gruenberg has written an outstanding manual with clear and concise interventions while complimenting the information with relevant images, tables, and photos. This manual will be required reading for all birth attendants at our birth center not just for the attendant's skills and knowledge but for the safety of our clients and their babies "Abigail Eaves, CNM, MSN Full Circle Midwifery Birth & Health Center

Pregnant Bodies, Fertile Minds: Gender, Race, and the Schooling of Pregnant Teens Review

I am glad that Wendy Luttrell wrote this book. I enjoyed 'listening' to the teen girls stories and enjoyed viewing their collages that represented themselves. However, being a black female, I didn't learn anything new about black teenage girls. However, I think it is a GREAT book for people who work in the field of Education and honestly don't understand a) the complex identity process that working class african american girls go through in America (let alone being pregnant) and b) how to be conscious of their own 'whiteness' and Euro-Anglo centric view of 'deviance'. I got the feeling that this book was intended more for white middle class educators who teach or may teach working class african american pregnant teenagers. I am glad that Wendy depicted the pregnant girls in a "positive" light. Wendy clearly states that she doesn't want to stereotype. She explains to the reader that she herself is coming from a white middle class background. That acknowledgement of her 'whiteness' and white privilege are important in understanding who she is as a researcher. I like the fact she explains to the reader how she did her research and her honest directness of telling the audience how she felt while doing her field research and what challenges her own identity created while trying to connect to and understand the 50 individual pregnant girls she interacted with. Overall, it is great to see that she does not construct teenage pregnancy as 'deviant' behavior. The girls in this book are HUMANIZED.

Pregnant Bodies, Fertile Minds: Gender, Race, and the Schooling of Pregnant Teens Overview

Focusing on fifty girls enrolled in a model public school program for pregnant teens, Luttrell explores how pregnant girls experience society's view of them and also considers how these girls view themselves and the choices they've made. Also includes an 8-page color insert.

First Comes Love, then Comes Malaria: How a Peace Corps Poster Boy Won My Heart and a Third World Adventure Changed My Life Review

I had high hopes for this book as a fun and informative read. What I got was a whiny, annoying run-on narrative that left me shaking my head in disappointment. I found it very insulting that the author felt it necessary to dedicate so much wordspace to the fact that her oh-so-sensitive nose could hardly stand the fact that she found most if not all Ugandans too "smelly" for her and that their "BO" made life so difficult for her. Poor baby. She even found it necessary to say this was the first thing she smelled getting off the plane in Uganda. I'm sure they would be thrilled to hear this glowing assessment of their culture from her and that she thinks of their country as one big latrine. And speaking of overusing wordspace, this book could have been ten pages shorter (and better off for it) if she would have left out all the minute details about her two cats, which added absolutely nothing to the story. I found myself yelling at the pages "who cares about the cats, move on!!" Her insults about the clothing choices of Ugandan women came off trite and childish. And a word about her anxiety attacks that got her discharged from the Peace Corps herself after one year - I'm not totally knocking it, because I personally have been there and know how awful they can be, however, to say you are envious of a woman who has a brain tumor and wishing you had that issue instead of panic attacks, that's pretty harsh and unbelievable in my opinion. And I do have to agree with another reviewer who said "how convenient that her panic attacks suddenly ended after she got sent home from Peace Corps." It did appear that Eve just wanted to get home to her boyfriend and make him her husband ASAP. The big love story between them that was supposed to be the theme of the book according to the title escaped me and apparently many other readers as well; this was All About Eve. Hey, that would've been a better title. I found her letters to friends and family annoying and too self-depricating, and the "I'll keep you posted" signature line seriously grated on my nerves after the second usage. Her comment about a Ugandan man having 6 wives seemed exaggerated for story effect; even Muslim men in African countries are only allowed to have 4 wives maximum. I almost threw the book away when she commented on not knowing how to light a kerosene lantern, and this was AFTER a year in Ecuador and a year in Uganda - really?? C'mon. Princess indeed. And her comment about not being able to remain a vegetarian in a third world country was not accurate either. I know this, because I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Burkina Faso several years ago (yes the same one her husband John served in during his tour of duty), and not only did I go a vegetarian and remain one without problem the whole time, but I also learned to light a lantern the first week there; got my water every day myself in a 20 gallon jug on the back of my own bike, swept my own house, and cooked my own meals (all without "servants"); and used a latrine the entire two years in addition to building them for the village I was in. There were no flush toilets in sight, unlike for lucky Eve. There were a very few points in which I give the author kudos and credit for getting right: hiding your personal trash so the local kids don't go through it; the painfully slow mail service; and the "please send" parts of her letters asking friends and family to send chocolate, among other things. I don't know, I just found this story lacking in appreciation and humility I guess, having been there done that. I haven't written a book about my experience, and I'm sure it's not easy, so kudos for giving it a try.

Spiritual Midwifery Review

This book gave me so much confidence in my abilities to give birth naturally! I was a nervous first-time mother-to-be, but wanted to make a serious attempt at natural childbirth due to all the complications associated with epidurals and the like. I read my mother's copy from cover to cover and filed all the wonderful details away for use during my own labor. I was born in the 70's, and found the hippy langauge a little amusing, but brightly descriptive and calming. I like being talked to as a person who has a mind of her own, not someone who cannot make decisions of her own free will, as some other birthing books tend to do. I recommend this book highly to all new mothers that I meet. The message that you are completely capable of giving birth to the child living inside you with little or no intervention, aside from real emergencies, is an invaluable one, and all the actual recounts put you in this frame of mind.Ina May and the midwives in this book create a loving voice in your head that stays with you when you need it the most. With no fear tactics, either! What a novel idea... And I also have to add that I used tons of the information given to aid my labor, and it all worked, at various levels. It gave me the confidence to labor at home for the majority of the first day, and by the time I went into the hospital I was already 7 centimeters dialated, much to my surprise. I gave natural birth to a healthy baby boy the next day. Everyone's labor experience is different- I just wanted to share my real-life labor that was made significantly better by this book.

Spiritual Midwifery Overview

Here is the 4th edition of the classic book on home birth that introduced a whole generation of women to the concept of natural childbirth. Back again are even more amazing birthing tales, including those from women who were babies in earlier editions and stories about Old Order Amish women attended by the Farm midwives. Also new is information about the safety of techniques routinely used in hospitals during and after birth, information on postpartum depression and maternal death, and recent statistics on births managed by The Farm Midwives. From the amazing birthing tales to care of the newborn, Spiritual Midwifery is still one of the best books an expectant mother could own. Includes resources for doulas, childbirth educators, birth centers, and other organizations and alliances dedicated to improving maternity care at home and in hospitals.
