Ruby Review

Olivia and Ruby meet under very unusual circumstances. Olivia is staying at a beach house that she and her husband planned to live in together. He was tragically killed and she is trying to come to terms with her grief. She finds Ruby in her kitchen drinking a glass of water. Ruby is 15, pregnant, and has no place to go. Although suspicious of her, Olivia lets her stay in her house and gradually they form a bond.
Olivia decides that the best thing for everyone is for her to adopt Ruby's baby. But will Ruby keep her word? Even tho she's only 15, there are times when she seems to think that it will be possible for her to keep her baby.
Their relationship goes through many stages from the distrust in the beginning to true friendship at the end. It is a marvelous book.

Knocked Up: Confessions of a Hip Mother-to-be Review

Please, may I review with fewer than one star? In all my life I have never, never, read a book as bland and inherently dull as Rebecca Eckler's Knocked Up. Buying it along with a few books on pregnancy, I thought it would be a breath of fresh air, a break from all the other tomes offering serious advice. Nope.
Why on earth did this writer feel she should share these uninspired musings on pregnancy? How on earth can a 30 year-old woman be so clueless about her own body? Is she honest? Maybe, but boy she is so self-centred and self-absorbed, while pondering why her friends are just that. I have no use for this book or for her writing and am incrdibly sorry I spent $14 to purchase it. What a sad little life she leads, valuing all the wrong aspects of her soulless existence while truly feeling she is a hip mother-to-be!
Someone out there should write a funny yet informative first-hand book about first time pregnancy. This is absolutely not it. Are we supposed to sympathise with this selfish and shallow woman? By the end of the book (and I was so glad it came) I could not stand her. This woman does not have a single ounce of writing talent. Read anything else, anything at all.

Abortion & Life Review

This book really explains the journey that abortion has taken over the past years. It includes stories of real women from all ages, walks of life, and eras who have had abortions. It sites cases, life experiences, and the true meaning of freedom that the ability to decide for ourselves to terminate a pregnancy affords. Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, it is an interesting read. I talked about it so much, my husband read it too. He was brought up to believe abortion was a terrible thing, but now his mind is opened up to what it really is, how it works, and why women seek this option. I highly recommend this book.

Down by the River Review

They say the curse of the Irish is the drink. But to understand your own brutal, beautiful country as well as Edna O'Brien understands hers must be a bigger curse by far. There's no way a blessed person could have written a novel as shimmering, as ruthless and as devastating as "Down by the River": it's evidence of something more than mere talent, or even genius, at work. O'Brien's gifts are magnificent and terrifying, along the lines of stigmata and clairvoyance -- the kind of gifts that mark you.
Inspired by a case in Ireland, in which a 14-year-old rape victim was forbidden by the courts to leave the country to obtain an abortion, "Down by the River" is the story of Mary MacNamara. After being raped by her father, Mary conceives his child. A sympathetic neighbor brings her to England for an abortion, but the authorities haul them back, cowing them with their ugly threats. Mary refuses to name the baby's father, and her case becomes a cause that turns her own friends and neighbors against her. She's seen as both a villain and an object of sanctimonious condescension in the Catholic community.
That community's cruelty is the bitter, driving force of the book -- but it's Mary's suffering and loneliness that are at the heart of it. After a street musician befriends her (he lets her stay at his flat for a few days and buys her a cheap sweater), she writes him a letter: "I nearly died when you gave me that jumper. You shouldn't have. Turquoise is my favorite color. There are two kinds of alone, there's the kind which you are and the kind which I am. Your alone is beautiful, it's rich." It's a passage that takes you apart, the way a teenager's breathless enthusiasm is crushed by the young woman's overwhelming sense of fear and isolation.
O'Brien never takes the easy way out: not even Mary's father is painted as a monster. She describes how he helps birth a colt -- reaching into the mare's womb and coaxing it out by both brute strength and force of will, saving the mother's life in the process -- with such grace and tenderness that even against your will, you feel yourself almost, almost, growing to understand him.
But O'Brien doesn't hold back when it comes to her wrath at the Catholic Church, and at the small-minded Irish who slavishly follow it at the expense of their own humanity. O'Brien has lived in London for more than 20 years -- she isn't welcome in her own country, for obvious reasons -- and yet Ireland will never leave her. Her stories work on us exactly the way her homeland has worked on her. They can stare you down and tear you apart like a wolf -- and then, miraculously and tenderly, bring you back to life again, stronger and better than before. With "Down by the River," O'Brien marks us as well: it's the kind of book that takes days, maybe weeks, to shake.

The Nazi Officer's Wife: How One Jewish Woman Survived the Holocaust Review

In "The Nazi Officer's Wife," Edith Hahn describes how she grew up with her parents and sisters in Vienna in the 1920's. Vienna in those days was a magical, picturesque and sophisticated place. This lovely city was filled with sunny cafés, cultural activities and daring intellectuals. Although the undercurrents of anti-Semitism were present in Vienna even then, Jews and gentiles coexisted side by side in peace.
In 1938, Edith's world was turned upside down. The German army marched into Austria; the Austrians voted for "Anschluss" or union with Germany. After the Nazis took over, everything changed for Edith and her family. German thugs ruled the streets and laws were passed which tightened the noose around Jewish necks day by day. Some members of Edith's family escaped Austria before conditions deteriorated any further. Edith remained in Austria and was sent to do forced labor at a farm and later at a work camp.
How did Edith ultimately avoid deportation? With the help of some friends, she obtained forged papers declaring her to be an Aryan of pure blood. At the age of twenty-eight, she married a Nazi party member named Werner Vetter and spent the war years in Brandenburg, Germany, as a dutiful "Aryan" wife and mother.
How could any woman live such a lie? Although Edith at times hated herself for her deception, she felt that her actions were justifiable under the circumstances. Is Edith Hahn's story an honest and courageous tale of survival against all odds, or is it the memoir of a cowardly woman who sold out in order to save herself? Each reader answer this difficult question for himself.

Quest for Conception: Gender, Infertility and Egyptian Medical Traditions Review

Dr. Marcia Inhorn harps upon three major themes: infertile Egyptian women's attempts at having children, the history of the development of Egyptian medical ideas and practices from ancient times and their effects on the present, and the present collaboration of econimic and political agendas. This book is for anyone studying or just want to know about infertility and the views of Egyptians.

Quest for Conception: Gender, Infertility and Egyptian Medical Traditions Overview

In Quest for Conception, Marcia C. Inhorn portrays the poignant struggles of poor, urban Egyptian women and their attempts to overcome infertility. The author draws upon fifteen months of fieldwork in urban Egypt to present moving stories of infertile Muslim women whose tumultuous medical pilgrimages have yet to produce the desired pregnancies. Inhorn examines the devastating impact of infertility on the lives of these women, who are threatened with divorce by their husbands, harassed by their husbands' families, and ostracized by neighbors.

A Question of Choice Review

I choose this book for my book club and couldn't be more pleased. What's most fascinating is that much of the text covers a time when I was quite young and, to some degree, have been ignorant of. For example, I wasn't aware of some of the employment law she mentions that discriminated against women. The book reads as 1/3 personal history, 1/3 US history and 1/3 legal and legislative processes. Don't be put off however as Weddington discusses these processes in a manner that is interesting, accessible and ultimately designed to educate the reader.

The Ethics of Abortion : Pro-Life Vs. Pro-Choice (Contemporary Issues) Review

I have read 4 books on abortion so far. This one is the best. Don't bother to read the other 2 reviews prior to mine. They don't say anything about this book at all. (One just talking about Mary aborting Jesus. The other about how he got the wrong book.) This is a challenging read, but much of it will surprise you. The last essay actually gives a possible compromise. Here is the other book I liked a lot: When Abortion Was a Crime: Women, Medicine, and Law in the United States, 1867-1973 The author in When Abortion is pro-choice, so you will have to live with that if you are not. However, it is highly researched and has won a number of awards. Her point of view does not make the facts any less true.

The Ethics of Abortion : Pro-Life Vs. Pro-Choice (Contemporary Issues) Overview

Comprehensive and balanced, this new third edition again makes available the most useful writing on the controversial abortion issue. Twenty-four essays and four excerpts from landmark Supreme Court decisions - including eleven new outstanding contributions - cover the history of abortion in the pre-Roe period; creative responses to the problem of abandoned infants; abortion in relation to the Constitution, feminism, and Christianity; and fundamental moral issues surrounding this polarising controversy. The contributors include: Joan C. Callahan, Sidney Callahan, Gregg Easterbrook, Harry J Gensler, Rick Hampson, Jack Hitt, Miriam Jordan, Gary Leber, Daniel C. Maguire, Don Marquis, Kathryn E May, Michael W McConnell, Ellen Messer, Anna Quindlen, Roger A Paynter, Jeffrey H. Reiman, Richard Selzer, Richard Schoenig, Paul D Simmons, Judith Jarvis Thomson, Mary Anne Warren, John T Wilcox, Naomi Wolf, and Melvin L Wulf.

Our Bodies, Ourselves: Pregnancy and Birth Review

Of all the books on pregnancy I've read, this one has been the most reassuring. As another reviewer mentioned, it's written in the same styles Our Bodies, Ourselves, which remains excellent through its many editions. It's not an especially thick book, and I would have loved to have seen more pictures, and personal excerpts, but everything important was covered, and the writing style was wonderful.
This book addresses itself to older women, teen mothers, single mothers, those with female partners, those living with diseases like HIV and diabetes; in short, all of the groups who got snubbed by most of the other books. It doesn't tell you how much weight the fetus should gain in each month, but that information's easy to find elsewhere. It does focus on making informed decisions about prenatal care, pain management, and maternal/fetal health, without talking down to the reader. Issues where there is normally controversy were handled gently; breastfeeding is encouraged, but formula feeding mothers aren't judged.
It's worth noting that the book does address some topics that may be upsetting, such as choosing to abort a fetus because of genetic testing, and stillbirth. These issues are very relevant, and handled calmly, but some chapters may be best skipped by the hormonal. I was glad to see that problems like depression took precedence over heartburn, and that a huge resources section was provided at the back of the book.
Highly recommended, and will be on my gift list for friends as they have their children. I don't want to give my copy up.

Abortion Wars: A Half Century of Struggle, 1950-2000 Review

Quite a tome of research, but with a definite pro-abortion slant. Pro-lifers will be surprised, amused and puzzled by some of the material presented as fact. Joe Scheidler of the Pro-Life Action League must have laughed when he read the several references to his work. Randall Terry is his own man, definitely not a follower of Scheidler. This knowledge would color any other "objective observations" covered in the book.

Barefoot: A Novel Review

After reading The Love Season, I was a little worried about a new book by Hildebrand, but this book blew me away. The story is about 3 women spending the summer together in Nantucket (of course) together to get through some very rough times. The main character, Vicki, has just been diagnosed with lung cancer - it is her idea to spend the summer at her beach house with her two very young children and her sister, Brenda, and best friend, Melanie.
Brenda and Melanie have problems of their own to settle over the summer. Brenda was just fired for dating a student at the college she taught at and sued for throwing a book into a painting. Melanie just found out she was pregnant after months of trying with the husband who has been cheating on her. The girls are all saved by a young college boy home for the summer who baby-sits Vicki's kids and brings normalcy and solace to the women.
If you've ever lost someone to cancer or have cared for someone going through chemo, this is a very emotional and sensitive book to read, it's so dead-on to what you feel and go through when you're involved in something like that.
It was just such a good book, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Barefoot: A Novel Overview

Three women arrive at the local airport, observed by Josh, a Nantucket native home from college for the summer. Burdened with small children, unwieldy straw hats, and some obvious emotional issues, the women-- two sisters and one friend--make their way to the sisters' tiny cottage, inherited from an aunt. They're all trying to escape from something: Melanie, after seven failed in-vitro attempts, learned her husband was having an affair, and then discovered she's pregnant; Brenda embarked on a passionate affair with an older student that got her fired from her prestigious job as a professor in New York; and her sister Vicki, mother to two small boys, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Soon Josh is part of the chaotic household, acting as babysitter, confidant, and, eventually, lover.

To Full Term: A Mother's Triumph Over Miscarriage Review

First things first: I'm a family friend of the Kleins: I've known Darci's husband since childhood and Darci since they married nearly 15 years ago. And I also reviewed the book as Darci was writing it.
But despite living through Darci's pregnancy (as much as someone 3,000 miles away can experience it) and knowing the story, I honestly found "To Full Term" a powerful and engaging story which taught me something about Darci, about her relationship with her husband, and perhaps most important of all, about the remarkable lack of attention pregnancy loss gets and the importance of being an educated and engaged parent and patient. I have no doubt that Darci's fight for the care she received was truly a fight for her son Sam's life, one that would have been lost had she not been so committed.
This is a gripping story that reads like great fiction -- with interesting, sympethetic characters and compelling drama -- but it's also a shocking expose on one important way our health care providers and the medical community fail us, and it's a story that needs to be told.

Good-bye, Piccadilly: BRITISH WAR BRIDES IN AMERICA (Statue of Liberty Ellis Island) Review

The British war brides, some 70,000 strong, occupy a special place in American military and immigration history.
The majority of war brides of World War II GI's, they represented a significant administrative and logistical problem to an officialdom (of both countries) which hoped in vain that the problem would go away. They persevered, despite hardships, intentional obstacles, and ill-concealed suspicions about their motives, and while most regard themselves as inevitably hyphenated Americans, the vast majority would do it all again.
Their story is well told here, shedding light on a little-known corner of World War II history and, incidentally, revealing much about life and love in the two countries.
(The "score" rating is an ineradicable feature of the page. This reviewer does not "score' books.)

Showers in Season (Seasons Series #2) Review

Blackstock and LaHaye have done it again! I never dreamed that this wonderful writing team could get any better than Seasons under Heaven, but they have. Showers is Season is a story of journeys--Barry's journey into acceptance of a handicapped child; Sylvia's journey into discovering God's plan for her; Cathy's journey into learning how to be a single mom. Showing that life isn't always easy, even for Christians, is what Blackstock and LaHaye do so well. Throughout the ups and downs of life, this group of friends and neighbors continue to rely on God and their strong faith to get them through everything. What a lesson this book holds for all of us! It was such a great book that I could not put it down until I finished it. I am now anxiously awaiting the next book from this great pair.

Showers in Season (Seasons Series #2) Overview

On the quiet cul-de-sac of Cedar Circle, where neighbors are close friends, fierce winds of circumstance threaten to sweep one couple away. Their Down's Syndrome pregnancy is shattering news for Tory and Barry Sullivan, but the option Barry proposes is abhorrent to Tory. It will take a wisdom and strength greater than their own to carry them through. That, and the encouragement only a loving, close-knit community can provide.Over kitchen counters and across the miles, the women of Cedar Circle lend their support to Tory and to each other as all of them face their personal struggles, heartaches, and joys. Shining with bright faith and friendship that illumine the stormiest night, Showers in Season explores the junction of life's realities, the cost of obedience, the power of relationships, and the promises of God.

Bear With Me: What They Don't Tell You About Pregnancy and New Motherhood Review

I received this as a gift in my third trimester and I swear I pulled a muscle laughing while reading. The author takes you through her pregnancy, labor and infant care. Why would I care about someone else's pregnancy when I've got my own to occupy me? Because she discusses the ugly moods as well as the beautiful moments, all with a healthy dose of humor and perspective. This doesn't replace any instructional reading you may want to do about labor or child care, but it is a welcome diversion from it and a quick read. Good for any parent, but because the author is half of a lesbian couple, I expect it is even better for two-mother families.

Pregnant Bodies, Fertile Minds: Gender, Race, and the Schooling of Pregnant Teens Review

I am glad that Wendy Luttrell wrote this book. I enjoyed 'listening' to the teen girls stories and enjoyed viewing their collages that represented themselves. However, being a black female, I didn't learn anything new about black teenage girls. However, I think it is a GREAT book for people who work in the field of Education and honestly don't understand a) the complex identity process that working class african american girls go through in America (let alone being pregnant) and b) how to be conscious of their own 'whiteness' and Euro-Anglo centric view of 'deviance'. I got the feeling that this book was intended more for white middle class educators who teach or may teach working class african american pregnant teenagers. I am glad that Wendy depicted the pregnant girls in a "positive" light. Wendy clearly states that she doesn't want to stereotype. She explains to the reader that she herself is coming from a white middle class background. That acknowledgement of her 'whiteness' and white privilege are important in understanding who she is as a researcher. I like the fact she explains to the reader how she did her research and her honest directness of telling the audience how she felt while doing her field research and what challenges her own identity created while trying to connect to and understand the 50 individual pregnant girls she interacted with. Overall, it is great to see that she does not construct teenage pregnancy as 'deviant' behavior. The girls in this book are HUMANIZED.

Pregnant Bodies, Fertile Minds: Gender, Race, and the Schooling of Pregnant Teens Overview

Focusing on fifty girls enrolled in a model public school program for pregnant teens, Luttrell explores how pregnant girls experience society's view of them and also considers how these girls view themselves and the choices they've made. Also includes an 8-page color insert.

The Marquise of O and Other Stories (Penguin Classics) Review

Kleist is the great, dark shadow of the German literary world. Born into a military Prussian family, he chose a literary career over the glory, order and ritual of his ancestors. He became a poet instead of an officer. He wandered from city to city, in search of a home, of solitude, a place to cultivate himself and his literary talents. He worried his friends with his demonic thoughts on suicide. He had a morose character and yet he was equally passionate. Stefan Zweig suggested he suffered from being continually extreme in everything he did, "always the superlative".
This collection of stories is not to be dismissed. "Michael Kohlhaas" is perhaps the quintessential piece; a tale of revenge and the price of vengeance, it is a universal story, appealing to our earthly desire for an "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth". Kleist creates a world of corruption of conflict. The reader wants revenge for the protagonist but how far can one man go to attain justice? What does he lose, what does he gain?
"The Earthquake in Chile" is another disturbing tale. In the wake of a natural disaster, we learn nothing changes the minds and mindsets of people. The earth shakes but the evil of humankind remains deeply rooted.
"The Betrothal in Santo Domingo" - One could see it as the companion piece to the above. In a world of war and rebellion, who can one trust?
"The Beggarwoman of Locarno" is perhaps the most subtle and haunting of ghost stories. Not only does it revel in the mysterious but it is a morality tale revealing the foibles and flaws of a darkened human spirit.
Kleist never became a high ranking officer in the Prussian military but he saw the world falling apart all around him. His stories are a reflection of the dark times he witnessed within his time and within his psyche.

The Marquise of O and Other Stories (Penguin Classics) Overview

In The Marquise of O-, a virtuous widow finds herself unaccountably pregnant. And although the baffled Marquise has no idea when this happened, she must prove her innocence to her doubting family and discover whether the perpetrator is an assailant or lover. Michael Kohlhaas depicts an honourable man who feels compelled to violate the law in his search for justice, while other tales explore the singular realm of the uncanny, such as The Beggarwoman of Locarno, in which an old woman's ghost drives a heartless nobleman to madness, and St Cecilia, which portrays four brothers possessed by an uncontrollable religious mania. The stories collected in this volume reflect the preoccupations of Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) with the deceptiveness of human nature and the unpredictability of the physical world.
