Let's Panic About Babies: How to Endure and Possibly Triumph Over the Adorable Tyrant who Will Ruin Your Body, Destroy Your Life, Liquefy Your Brain, ... Turn You into a Worthwhile Human Being Review

I am a mother of two growing young men, and that has caused me to be crotchety toward the things that young people do. One thing that I am especially given to crotchets about is the use of the acronym LOL. I don't hate laughing, mind, and I certainly don't expect anyone to laugh silently. Laughing out loud is great! I just don't love LOL.
And yet, I have found myself LOLing every time I open this book. And everyone in my family is LOLing every time they open this book, including my 11-year-old and 8-year-old sons. Everyone where I work LOL'd when they stole it off my desk to read when they were supposed to be working and you should ask before you put your dirty paws all over someone else's brand new book, Megan!* My point is that, despite how much I hate LOL, I wouldn't be able to describe how much laughing out loud this book has been providing everyone around me without using that very shorthand. So, there you go.
Here's why I love it. A hundred years ago when I first saw that little blue line on that urine-soaked stick (which I then jumped around, waving in the air. Gross!) I ran right out and bought a certain book about what a woman should expect when she is expecting a certain thing. The certain thing is a baby. Well, I sat right down and devoured that book, and when I was through...I was afraid to move. Or eat. Or think too much. When I finally got over the trauma, I told my husband that vaunted tome should really be called, "1,000 Things to Be Paranoid About Over the Next Nine Months. HA HA, You Should See How Crazy Your Eyes Look Right Now!" I picked it up with a pair of tongs and tossed it in a box never to be seen again. Clearly, these two women understand the way I felt back then. They get me. They get you too. And this book is the answer to any pregnancy and parenthood guide out there that will try to convince you that you might have toxoplasmosis from a partial granule of cat litter that your husband tracked near you on the bottom of his shoe and which somehow got into your eye.
If you are looking to have a baby or you're looking to install a baby in someone, if you've recently had a baby or watched while the special lady in your life did all the work, this book is for you. I wish I'd had this before I got pregnant. I'm glad I have it now. And if you're currently pregnant, don't worry, this book will not cause you to laugh your fetus right out of you, because that's not scientifically possible. But you will probably tinkle your maternity pants. Which you're going to do anyway, so might as well have fun doing it!
*Her real name. And to be fair to Megan, she immediately ordered two copies of the book - one for herself and one for a shower gift - as soon as I pried her grubby mitts off of mine.

Either way, you're confused, you're frightened, and 911 won't take your calls anymore. But don't despair! Let's Panic About Babies! is here to hold your hand and answer some important, age-old baby-related questions, including:- How can I be sure I'm pregnant? (Torso swells gradually until baby falls into underpants.)- Did I just pee myself? (Yes.)- What happens if I have sex during my pregnancy? (Your baby will be born with a full, lush beard.)- How can I tell if I've chosen the wrong pediatrician? (He/she can't pronounce "stethoscope.") - How do I make sure my baby loves me back? (Voodoo.) From the moment they're created until the day they steal our cars, our babies demand center stage in our lives. So join Alice and Eden as they tell you (and your lucky partner!) exactly what to think and feel and do, from morning sickness to baby's first steps. They know everything!

This is a great gift for baby showers, a mother to be, or any new Mom. There isn't really "porn" here, it is pictures of guys doing generous things for their wives. The pictures are great and captions are hilarious. Everyone at the party will get a kick out of this.

I'm a big fan of Dawn and just like her blog, this book is hilarious. It is a funny, slightly informative read. Pregnancy: The Ultimate Week-by-Week Pregnancy Guide Review

When we had our first child my wife got all of the other pregnancy books that tracked the process week by week. We found many of them helpful but we still went to each doctor's visit with a long list of questions. We grabbed this book as a reference guide towards the end of my wife's second pregnancy and found it to be the most informative, direct, and comprehensive pregnancy book on the market. Every basic day to day question that we ever brought to our doctor was answered simply and directly in this book.
If we were having a baby for the first time again, we would without hesitation make this our number one source of information outside of our obstetrician.
The post partum section is great too. It really gives insight in to what it's like to have a newborn in the house and how to deal with the challenges of the first few weeks.
Great book!!!!

The Birth Book: Everything You Need to Know to Have a Safe and Satisfying Birth (Sears Parenting Library) Review

This book is for all the women out there who have ever felt some mild anxiety all the way to a wrenching fear about the childbirth process. Dr. Sears and his wife Martha Sears, RN give readers a brief history of childbirth practices, they discuss the myths and fears surrounding birth, and then come full circle to help women understand that childbirth is a natural process. The Sears' articulate that many of today's complications of childbirth are related to the overuse of medical interventions and not enough education about the birth process itself. Although the Sears' advocate for drug free childbirth and as few interventions as medically needed, The Birth Book provides readers with the information that a woman (and her partner) need to make their own wise and individual informed decisions about medical treatments during childbirth. I found the book very empowering. I choose to have my baby at a hospital with my family practicioner and because of the information I gl! eaned from The Birth Book I was able to feel good about the many decisions I had to make surrounding my baby's birth. Many hospitals and doctors have a set of "standard procedures" for birth but I found my doctor and the hospital both were willing to work with my preferences because I was informed about the decisions I was making. Some of the decisions in my baby's birth included not to induce my labor (I went 11 days overdue), to decline the use of pitocin to "speed" my labor when it did come, to ask for pain relief when I needed it, to request not to have an episiotomy and to labor and deliver in the position of my choice. As a result, I had a wonderful (and yes, intense) first birth. Although I fully realize every woman and every labor is different, I believe that my birth experience was definately influenced positively by being educated about technologies, making informed decisions, and trusting my own body. This book helped me to do all those thi! ngs.

I laughed hysterically every time I opened up this book (*Or Rather Turned On My Kindle To Read It*)!
My husband and I are considering children after this year and I wanted to get a head-start by reading a few pregnancy books to get a good idea of what I was getting into. Not only was this book informative but it made me laugh through some of the more uncomfortable subjects like varicose veins and the external cephalic procedue (*AKA Turning The Baby In The Womb To Prevent Breech Birth*).
I highly recommend this book!

First Baby After 30 . . . or 40: What to Expect When You're 30-Something or More Review

This was not what I was expecting. First, it is written for United Kingdom and I didn't understand some of the terms they used. All of the "Useful Address" and websites at the back of the book were in England. I think some of the tests the book talked about are not done in the US. (I could be wrong, that is why I wanted a book on pregnancy!!) Page 18 told you "The later you have your first child, the greater the reduction in ovary-cancer risk." Page 22 said "And the later you have a baby, the greater is your risk of ovary cancer." I flipped back and forth between these pages for 15 minutes trying to figure this out.
It did have some really good points and it did make me feel better about my decision to wait to have childern. It is a good start if you are just beginning to look into pregnancy if your over 30. But, get it at the library........

First Baby After 30 . . . or 40: What to Expect When You're 30-Something or More Overview

Increasing numbers of women are having their first baby after 40, and with modern technology, the age at which women can have children is rising further still. Although books on pregnancy and childbirth abound, a woman having her first child after the age of30 or even40 has special needs and concerns which are different from those of younger women. This book looks at the pros and cons of having a first child later in life, discusses how to avoid or minimize the potential problems, and offers guidance on looking after yourself and your baby. And because older women considering pregnancy are more likely than younger ones to think about life after the baby, it also takes a good look at family planning.

A Rowboat Out Of Sand Review

An alternately touching, humorous journey; this story details the life-changing experience of one woman, who through sheer determination and commitment to her unborn child, remains flat on her back for weeks, to insure that her child might live. Her story captures the love that develops for her unborn child as she is confronted with the news that she more than likely "will not make it to term." This story is certainly inspirational to any woman who finds herself suddenly dealing with a high risk pregnancy; but her courage in the face of adversity is a reminder to anyone who reads this, that the impossible can be possible......just like her 'rowboat out of sand'.

A Rowboat Out Of Sand Overview

Katie Rosa was ready and eager to start a family, so when the pregnancy test from the local pharmacy told her she was expecting a tiny tax deduction, she was thrilled. Since this was her first pregnancy, she had no reason to imagine thatthings might go terribly wrong.Five months into her pregnancy, Katie was thrust into the scary unknown world of hospital maternity wards, high-risk doctor's offices, and the tedious life of the bedridden.Through the course of her ordeal, Katieexperienced times of overwhelming fear, moments of intense happiness, and learned that humor, family, and friends really do make thedifference in a crisis.

The Essential Over 35 Pregnancy Guide Review

After reading Natalie Angiers' book, "Woman: An Intimate Geography", this book left something to be desired. As a primer for women who are over 35 and either want to be or are pregnant, it was not bad, however, for a woman who is over 35 and wants to be pregnant and has read a good deal about her body and her possibilities, this book was sort of more the Reader's Digest variety. This book might well serve as a resource for all the different tests an older mother can have to ensure fetal health. It also however, stressed a little too much on all the various reasons that older women have a higher risk of conceiving/delivering unhealthy babies. Once I had finished it I had a hard time convincing myself that it was 'going to be ok' to conceive at 37 and deliver a health child to term - not the sort of feeling one wants at 37 before her first child. In any case, the key to understanding the point of reference for this book was the fact that the author was a doctor (hence all those tests) and had had her first child at 41.

A Cup Of Comfort For Mothers To Be: Stories That Celebrate a Very Special Time Review

I have to give this book a five-starred review -- because I have a story in it. Woohoo! My story, "The Great Rabbit Chase" on p. 185, is only one of over 50 humorous and inspiring tales to encourage moms-to-be.
Editor Colleen Sell did a top-notch job compiling an eclectic mix of writers sharing the wonders and woes of maternity. I've laughed and cried reading through these stories, and can't wait to give it as a gift at the next baby shower I attend.
The shiny paperback cover is durable enough to withstand doctor's visits, bathtubs, even delivery rooms ... and who has time to read more than a short story between contractions anyway? Nothing is better for taking a mom-to-be's mind off her aches and pains ... than a book that reminds her it's worth it all...when baby enters the world.

Program Your Baby's Health: The Pregnancy Diet for Your Child's Lifelong Well-Being Review

This book has solid information based on well-established research. I recommend it. I decided to write this review because another reviewer didn't understand the concept of metabolic profiling. The scientific data for malnourished mothers and babies comes only from times of war and famine and other natural disaster times because it is simply not ethical to malnourish a human fetus or pregnant mother to see what results. The concept of metabolic programming is forward thinking, but the concept of giving a baby what it needs from day one is common sense. Under different circumstances and in different environments humans adapt based on what is available- so why not start that thinking in utero??
I think this book treats mothers with respect, instead of over simplifying nutrition concepts. Good Stuff!

Program Your Baby's Health: The Pregnancy Diet for Your Child's Lifelong Well-Being Overview

The most important period of your child's health is the nine months before birth.Cutting edge research in a new field known as "metabolic programming" reveals a startling new fact: what a mother eats during pregnancy has a far greater effect on her child's future development, overall health, and resistance to disease than was previously thought. In fact, adult chronic illnesses long blamed on an unhealthy lifestyle or genetic influences are now believed to be a direct result of the uterine environment during pregnancy. Now, thanks to this pioneering new book, you can "program" your baby's future health by eating right, gaining the appropriate amount of weight, and avoiding toxins--starting even before conceiving. Dr. Barbara Luke, a nationally recognized expert in the field of public-health nutrition, provides a complete, practical nutrition and lifestyle program that covers your entire pregnancy, month by month--and the first two years of your baby's life. Here is everything you need to know to raise the healthiest baby possible, including:- What to eat when you're trying to conceive and when you are pregnant- Practical strategies that protect your child against hypertension, diabetes, and obesity- Special dietary needs for women in every age group, from under 25 to over 40- Quick, easy menus, helpful charts, and checklists- Replenishing fluids: how much do you need to drink?- The nutritional needs of mothers carrying twins or "super-twins"- New strategies for overcoming morning sickness- Helping your growing child eat right and stay healthyPregnancy is your window of opportunity to boost your baby's health at birth, through childhood, and beyond. Let this book help you take the most advanced, scientific approach to preventing disease and optimizing health!

Portraits of Pregnancy: The Birth of a Mother Review

I am currently a college student, and have quite a few years before I plan on entering motherhood, but still find this book to be an inspiration. The mothers featured in the book range from ordinary middle-class to celebrity status. Each woman has a story, a unique 9-month (or perhaps life-long) journey. Because Jennifer Loomis made expectant mothers feel beautiful and comfortable during photo shoots, she was able to gain their trust and form a more intimate, personal relationship. It truly shows on the pages of this book. I hope to one day touch the lives of others as Jennifer has.
"Portraits of Pregnancy: The Birth of a Mother" has opened my mind to a new view on pregnancy. When I become an expectant mother, I will remember that my body is beautiful; not only in a physical sense, but also because a child is growing and developing within me. I will also remember that any worry or fear I may have, many mothers before me have had the same concerns.
This book would be an especially great gift for expecting mothers. If you are the mom-to-be, you may find a story you can relate to, learn from, or aspire toward. I think "Portraits of Pregnancy" would also be appealing to those interested in photography - as I've mentioned, the photographs are phenomenal. Some are quite bold, but I find the black and white development actually softens them, leaving a hint of delicacy and subtleness. This book is great; truly inspirational. Chances are, at least one person you know could benefit from "Portraits of Pregnancy."
