Chosen As The Frenchman's Bride (Harlequin Presents) Review

What I can I say? This new writer did a wonderful job with the storyline. It was very believable and realistic, yet still romantic. The two main characters have a sizzling chemistry from the moment they meet and it was maintained throughout the entire story. Both were flawed but very likeable, especially the hero. The setting was vivid and romantic and the plot flowed very well, although there were a few parts that were frustrating. However, it was not ridiculously drawn out so as to overpower a great plot.
It is refreshing to read something for a change under the harlequin title, done with a sort of old approach, dressed and spiced up so as to make it refreshing. It kept me reading until 3 am and I had to go to work the same day. Now that has to be a really good book!
I say great job to Ms. Green for such a wonderful first effort. I hope she keeps up the good work and show those other boring, no-imagination harlequin writers how a real romance should be written.

Innocent Secretary... Accidentally Pregnant (Modern Romance) Review

Luca is a playboy. Emma knows just the type being she was raised by her single father and four older brothers who all view women as something of a game. Hunt, claim, toss the remains in the trash. So when she starts something with her boss she knows that before it starts it's going to end and before it ends she's going to get heartbroken.
Luca is the type of character I usually hate, a real womanizing bastard who wears fake charm like most people put on shirts and yet, like Emma, I found myself falling a little bit in love with him too. His father was abusive to his mother, and there was a history of serious spousal abuse going back much further in his family. He absolutely refused to get serious with a woman and once he started to care even the slightest bit he would cut and run, afraid he would one day become violent, while sleeping around in a sad attempt to ease some of his inner pain. I have never seen a more nasty and yet utterly sympathetic "hero" in a romance novel before and I would be hard pressed to think of a more memorable lead, even though his patterns are the generic male harlequin statue quo.
This isn't an easy book to read. Luca is mean, nasty, and down right cruel to Emma most of the time. He tells her that she's boring, he doesn't like her, that she's bad in bed and takes back his statement of love with the excuse he was just trying to get her into bed. I feel about him like Emma does, that he is a good person who does terrible things. I was slightly unsatisfied with the ending being I thought given Luca's CONSTANT rejection she forgave him way, way, way too easily. He gave her an explanation of his past, but that doesn't justify the way he treated her and I really would have loved to see Luca court her and have a few scenes with him showing his love, not buried under a mound of growls.
But this really is a wonderful, if very emotional and heartbreaking tale of one extraordinarily damaged man and one slightly damaged woman trying to come to terms with their feelings for each other. Don't let the stupid title and even worse cover fool you, this book is light years better than the standard harlequin fare.
5 stars.

The Italian Prince's Pregnant Bride (Harlequin Presents) Review

Aimee Black can't believe the audacity of some people, especially the man that just accosted her on the street no less. The granddaughter of the owner of the SCB bank, Aimee has just about had enough of domineering and bossy men. Just that day her grandfather told her he was stepping down from control of the bank, and Aimee knows without a doubt that she is the only person capable in their family to take over the reins. Her grandfather, however, has other plans. Plans that have infuriated Aimee so much that she does something that she never ever does. She goes out to a club drinking and dancing. It is in this club that her eyes meet those of the man that ran into her earlier in the day. When she sees how he is looking at her she thinks of nothing else but running out of the club and getting away, but to no avail. He finds her and proceeds to show her exactly how he feels smart mouthed women should be dealt with.
Prince Nicolo Barbieri is in Manhattan to negotiate the taking over of the SCB Bank. Arriving at his hotel, as he is stepping out of his limo, he runs into a beautiful woman who immediately berates him and all but cusses him out for his actions, no matter that they were completely accidental and Nicolo was actually apologizing. Not prepared for the animosity radiating out of this woman's pores, Nicolo does the only thing he can think of at the time - he kisses her speechless and then dares her to hit him.
Sparks fly when Aimee and Nicolo come together. They have no idea that in just a few short weeks their lives will be even more entwined. While circumstances force Nicolo to do the right thing, Aimee knows that he doesn't love her. Or does he?
The premise and blurb for The Italian Prince's Pregnant Bride captivated my attention so much that I had to read this book. Once I began to read, my expectations went out the window and I found myself more than once wincing at the harsh words Aimee said to Nicolo at their first meeting on the street. However, when he found her in the club and proceeded to show her just how much he had been thinking about her, I blushed and kept reading. I love stories of strangers coming together and then finding each other again, and this was such a book. But, that is where the fairy tale ends. When both characters meet each other again after being apart for three months, the only thing they had going for each other was their desire, which was hard to believe since they spent most of their time together fighting. Nicolo needed his face slapped more than once and I wanted to shake Aimee for the stubborn woman she was.
Sandra Marton's The Italian Prince's Pregnant Bride was a good read, full of hot Italian emotions. I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to because of the constant conflict between the heroine and hero. I just could not make myself believe that they loved and cared for each other. I will read Sandra Marton's next release in September because while I didn't like the characters of this book, I am not going to forget about how well written the book was, nor how I stayed on the edge of my seat to see where the plot was going.

Desert King, Pregnant Mistress (Harlequin Presents Extra) Review

The first few chapters of this started off with a blast. I mean it started off with a feisty, very funny, beautiful heroine. There were even laugh out loud moments. The hero was also portrayed as a very strong, alpha-type but totally yummy. I was on a high until around two thirds of the way through when the characters simply changed with absolutely no warning and for no good reason I could discern. The hero became cold and distant, talking some nonsense about a war he had to fight in the desert. The heroine lost her very quirky sense of humour which actually kept the story interesting and fun.
The heroine was pregnant with his child which he knew about from the beginning, yet he chose to go off and fight his stupid desert war (thus,I guess the title "Desert King...") abandoning the heroine and his child for a whole year.
The "dead baby" - I call the baby that - because the author made sure she slept throughout the whole story, even when her mother was running for her life with her in her arms she never woke up, cried, throw up or do anything a baby is expected to do under such circumstances. UNBELIEVABLE even in fiction!! Oh, at the very end of the book she was allowed to 'coo', I guess to remind the reader she still existed. This author seemed to be so excited about the story at first but quickly ran out of ideas and subsequently had no idea where to go next. Its like it was a rush just to get it over and done with.
A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!

Marriage At His Convenience (Wedlocked) (Presents, 2196) Review

I can not believe this book is classified as a romance. There is none. There is definatley no Hero, I felt so sorry for the Heroine, but in the end I thought she was just TSTL, sympathy only goes just so far. The Jerk takes her virginity and they live together for a year, but even though she was innocent he thinks that she was innocent because she was living with two gay guys and didn't have a chance to have sex before he came along, so yes she's a slut in the making. He decides to marry a good Greek girl who's supposed to be a virgin and only wants to stay at home and have his babies. The Jerk and the Heroine are still living together he has plans to tell her their affair is finished but they both go to a party where his fiancee tells the heroine that they are having a big engagement party next weekend and that she's invited. She also confides to the heroine that she's had plenty of lovers before (even though she's only 18) and she finds the Jerk booring well serve him right, she's only marring for money and freedom. My heart went out to the heroine she loved the jerk, and he told her he never loved her and that basically she was a slut, and then rubbed it in how much he loved his wife tobe. The heroine has to see photo's of them in the paper the engagement and wedding photo's, she suffers from a total loss of self worth after he dishes all that crap at her. She see's them together about a year later and the wife is pregnant. It's soul destroying for her. Now this is where I think she is TSTL, 5 years, she inherits shares in his company and he blackmails her to marry him. She even falls into bed with him before they marry. What is up with this woman, hello, where is your self respect, I really don't think that anyone would want to be in the same room with this jerk let alone sleep with him after what he's done. She of course has kept herself pure for him. He is jealous because someone has asked her to marry him and he spits the dummy, hello he dumped her after he got engaged to his wife, called her a slut said that is all she will ever be, blackmails her into marrying him. He tells her he is sorry, but all this happens after his father has died and he has divorced his wife, never once has he put her before anything, she was supposed to just sit around for 5 years and remain pure while he slept with his wife and got her pregnant. While telling her sorry, he explains that his wife wasn't a virgin on their wedding night, I'm sure she really wants to hear about him sleeping with his wife. Then he said that he accepted that she wasn't a virgin and tried to make the marriage work, I mean wasn't she the good Greek wife who was a virgin and stayed home to have kids, no this was a druggie and spendthrift, some could say he got what he deserved. His child was still born and he put his wife into rehab and divorced her. The exwife now pregnant and married to a doctor is happy, life's good for some. The jerk says sorry and she just jumps into his arms. HELLO, HELLO, do you think I'm stupid. No way does this guy get off with just a little I'm sorry after what he put the heroine through. Are we supposed to feel sorry for him, I don't think so. Are we supposed to feel so grateful that he tells the heroine that he loves her, I don't think so, this is a guy you would never trust again, this guy you would cross the street to get away from. This is NOT a romance book. This Jerk should be transplanted into a horror story as the victim. This heroine should get her self a life, she's really TSTL. But guess what I'm the really stupid one because I'm the one that read this book, and I'm the one suffering all sort of angst over a jerk but worse is the heroine accepting all the crap he dishes out. Oh for a good romance.

The Bride's Baby (Harlequin Romance) Review

The book blurb made me think this was a Secret Baby story... Well, it was but, at the same time, it really wasn't considering the fact that the baby wasn't a secret. Confusing? Yes, that's the feeling I had throughout most of the book.
Tom and Sylvie had a brief meeting when she was introduced as the wedding planner for his upcoming nuptials to her friend Candy. An unexpected attraction sparked on both sides but, considering that he was about to get married, Tom and Sylvie shoved that feeling aside and never let anyone - including themselves - realize it. But after 6 months of heavy planning and preparation, Candy ditched everything to elope with one of Sylvie's employees 3 days before the wedding. Naturally, Tom felt it was his due to unload all his "annoyance" on Sylvie - after all, she had plagued his dreams since he had met her - and, before they knew it, their mutual suppressed attraction took over and they were having unprotected sex on his bed... Since this is Romancelandia, the "worst" thing you can get from unprotected sex is a pregnancy, so that's what Sylvie got. Unfortunately, Tom was no longer in the picture when Sylvie found herself pregnant, since he had left the country the day after their one-night stand. Unable to reach him by telephone, she had no choice but to deliver him the news by letter. Obviously, he never got to receive that letter and so this Failure to Communicate story took off...
This was one of those stories that wouldn't make past the 1st chapters if the hero and the heroine sat together and spoke CLEARLY with each other. Regardless, Tom and Sylvie were very likable characters, and that kind of "saved" the book for me and prevented me from throwing it against the wall - figuratively speaking, since this was an e-book. I rooted for their HEA and was glad when the darn Big Misunderstanding was finally resolved.
As for the writing, Ms. Fielding had the distracting habit of inserting the word "then" between the lines of the characters' speech. For example:
"Is that a fact?" Then, "So? Where are they?"
"I'd come and give you a hand but I have to take delivery of a cake." Then, "Do you need a hand up?"
I have to ask, what was the purpose of the word "then" in there? To gave us pause? To help her reach the necessary word count to meet the publisher's requirements? I know I'm nitpicking but that word was used over and over again in the story, and it was annoying.
All in all, I'm glad this was a freebie because I would have been "mad" if I had paid anything for this book.

Grounds For Marriage (From Here To Paternity) (Harlequin Presents) Review

When she was seventeen, Lacey Kerr spent an evening with nineteen-year-old, handsome as the devil Tully Cleaver and a baby girl, Lacey named Emma, was the result. Tully, though, not the marrying kind, to his credit contributed financially to his daughter's upbringing and saw her on weekends.
Now it's ten years later and Lacey tells Tully she wants to get married and Tully is upset. He meets and grills her fiancé Julian, an attorney eleven years older than Lacey with a sixteen-year-old daughter, and, of course, he finds the man wanting. He also doesn't want anyone else raising his daugher.
And wouldn't you know it, Lacey has stayed pure as virgin white snow all these ten years. Not even doing the deed with her fiancé. This I don't get, because her ex, who she is supposedly not pining away for, is a jerk. And if that weren't enough for poor Lacey, the daughter she loves so much is a spoiled brat who doesn't seem to give a wit about her mother at all. Sheesh, if Lacey were any kind of a woman at all, she'd leave the brat with the ex and head out for greener pastures, but, you know, that doesn't happen here in this romance that didn't excite me very much at all.

Grounds For Marriage (From Here To Paternity) (Harlequin Presents) Overview

FROM HERE TO PATERNITY"Too handsome, too clever, too sure of himself, too everything."Lacey Kerr, at seventeen, had thought that of Tully Cleaver, before she'd made the mistake that had altered her life. And in ten years she hadn't changed her mind. For her daughter's sake Tully was welcome in their lives, and he had surprised Lacey by becoming a good father who wanted to be involved in Emma's life—but he wasn't husband material. However, when Lacey announced that she was to marry Julian Wye, Tully took action! After all, he was the father of the bride's daughter….FROM HERE TO PATERNITY-men who find their way to fatherhood by fair means, by foul, or even by default!--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

The Greek Tycoon's Disobedient Bride (Harlequin Presents) Review

From the back of the book:
It amazed Ophelia that Lysander Metaxis- a Greek billionaire notorious for his harem of adoring women -wanted to marry her, a humble gardener with a grumbling old manor house and debts up to her ears.
But soon she realized Lysander didn't want her- he wanted her property and her body. But marry him she would, because she had no choice if she wanted to keep what she cherished most. And disobedient she would be, because her new husband had no intention of loving her...My take:
The heroine Ophelia inherits a rundown manor upon her grandmother's death. The house is in dire need of repairs and poor Ophelia has no money. The hero, Lysander wants to buy the manor because the house belonged to his "mother's" family. Ophelia's grandmother Gladys, hated the Metaxis family with a passion. Lysander's father broke up with Ophelia's mother and married the Lysander's mother instead. This fueled Gladys's bitter hatred of the Metaxis family. In order to hit the Metaxis clan with one last blow from the grave, Gladys leaves the manor to Lysander and Ophelia if they are married for one year. If they do not, the manor goes to a distant cousin who can not sell it for five years.
At the reading of the will, Lysander sees Ophelia for the first time. He gets that "manly urge" because of Ophelia lovely face and hourglass figure. When Ophelia tells Lysander she will never marry him, he informs her that she needs his money to repair the manor. Ophelia eventually gives in with the hope that a second document her grandmother left behind will give her the whereabouts of her younger sister. At the wedding reception, Ophelia was given the second document telling her that her younger sister had been adopted. There was also a second will which was written later than the first, it fully gave the manor to Ophelia. Lysander was beyond angry and thought Ophelia knew of her grandmother's second will. Ophelia threatens to divorce Lysander since the manor is now hers but Lysander counters that he bankrupt her if she tries.
Of course, the two move in together, have a few misunderstandings but in the end get on well declare their love blah blah blah. The story between Ophelia's mother and the Metaxis is quite detailed and full of twists and turns. I must say that this book had one of the most exciting *scenes * wink wink of Lynne Graham's books. Only The Frenchman's Love-Child Brides of L'Amour (Harlequin Presents)hild had more hot *scenes*. Overall, the book was somewhat dry, maybe it is because the hero was super PC. I will give this book 4 out of 5 stars because it was a decent read and Graham did a good job with the background between the two families

Emma always thought it had been for "pretend", especially when he abruptly left her soon after their honeymoon. But the marriage is real, and the two are still very much husband and wife. The Italian's Pregnant Mistress (Harlequin Presents) Review

Angelo Falcone was with model Francesca Hailey for a while and he was ready to make things more serious. It was a big step for him but he never expected that she didn't want anything more from him than a few rushed weekends when their schedules collided.
Enter a few years later and Angelo is about to be married to a girl who fits all the requirements of being married to him. Life seems to be going smoothly until he runs into Francesca again. She's started a career as a caterer and settled back in London, something she refused to do for him, and Angelo finds that he's still hurt and won't be able to get past it until he can settle up with her. The best way to do that? Revenge of course.I have as yet to read a Cathy Williams book that I didn't like and this one is no exception. Since Francesca's reasons for not being with Angelo are a big mystery through the book, most of the story is told from his point of view. Angelo was an excellent character. Even though he was sometimes cruel you could see how he was battling with himself over wanting to be with her, not wanting to give her the power to hurt him again and not willing to admit to himself that he had feelings for her.
I also liked that the big mystery didn't fall completely into a stereotype as so often happens.
The downfalls aren't very many. Sometimes the hero was mean to the point of almost unforgivable. I think half the reason for this is Cathy Williams tends to write characters that act more like real people. In real life people lash out unforgivably when they've been hurt. I also thought that the big mystery wasn't fleshed out enough in terms of the person she became from the person she was.
Overall I thought this was a great book. It's definitely staying on my keeper shelf.

Pregnant with the De Rossi Heir (Harlequin Presents Extra) Review

These types of Harlequin books usually follow the same formula and often have a predictable ending. But I don't mind because I know what I'm getting into. The reason I gave this particular book 2 stars was simply for the bad writing. Every other sentence seemed to end with an exclamation point. This made it seem like the characters were yelling all the time.
The characters were also very one dimensional and shallow. And it was ridculous to me that they were professing love for each other after knowing each other less than 36 hours. I would recommend skipping this book and am personally leary of reading anything else by this author.

Price of a Wife (From Here To Paternity) (Harlequin Presents. No 1914) Review

I really liked this book, it is one of my favorites by Helen Brooks. I also like to read Jessica Steele, Susan Fox and Eva Rutland.
I read this book some time ago, but that was before I had access to this site, so I took the pleasure of reading it again so I could write a review. When the going gets tough, the tough read books.
In this book Luke Hawkton needs a advertising agency,Luke wants to put on a grand-slam publicity extravaganza to launch their new yacht in th South of France. HE meets Josie Owens at a art show, Luke goes there to check out Josie and the great things he has heard about her and the work she is doing for the small art show. Luke falls head over heels in love with Josie at frist sight.
Josie on the other hand treats him pretty badly, and snubs him completely. Luke not used to this kind of treatment from women is more attracted to her because of it.
Josie is happy in her job, working for working for an advertising agency and living with her big cat Mog, who by the way likes Luke. Luke finds he needs all his wits and formidable charm, yet he can't get Josie pinned down. He knows in his heart she loves him, just as much as he loves her, but she won't allow the love they have to blossom.
It's not until the end of the book that he finds out why.
From the back of the book: 'He wanted a family...at any price! Luke Hawkton was a wildly successful businessman who had it all. His one remaining ambition was to find a wife and start a family...
Josie's dream of marriage and babies had been shattered by tragedy. She had to live with the knowledge that she'd never experience the joy of holding her own child. Her career was now her life, and she couldn't allow herself to get close to Luke. If he married her, he'd forget his dreams of fatherhood. Surely that was too heavy a price for any man to pay?'

Greek Tycoon, Inexperienced Mistress (Harlequin Presents) Review

You always have an idea that there will be times that you'll want to (at least I'll want to) hit him where it'll hurt but in this case... I felt more frustrated at the Heroine. (Please beware I offer examples from the book, so that you get a better idea of its contents, but I wouldn't want to give spoilers without a warning)
Her whole life she has felt inadequate because she is a curvy woman, not a waif-like creature that grace runways, or magazine covers. So I understand she had self esteem issues, but not to the point where she becomes a mistress without even knowing it. I loved her at the beginning as I saw her as a strong woman who very politely informed him that she had not forgiven his awful behavior despite the flowers or the invitation to dinner that he sent.
But that was before their affair started.Atreus molds her into the perfect weekend lover, tells her he prefers skirts on his women etc... and she falls right into it, adjusting things about her life and herself to please him. He never speaks of a relationship, never deceives her, they hook up every weekend and 18 months later it takes another persons observation to make her realize she's his mistress and not his girlfriend.
Then the next time she meets him, he makes it clear he's so careful with contraception because he does not want a child with her. That he doesn't want children until he marries and that he plans to marry a woman from his social circles.Lindy gets upset that he should have told her they were entering a dead-end affair from the beginning, but really was she thinking at all because it was very obvious that's what it was. They break up, he wants her away from him, goes as far as to evict her out of his cottage that shes leasing. She knows shes pregnant when she leaves but understandably doesn't tell him in light of their last conversation.
I don't think there was ever really any real indication that Atreus cared for her, we are jerked around emotionally. After they break up he's a stone throws away from being engaged to his perfect version of a bride, when he finds out Lindy's pregnant he informs her that she has dibs because she's pregnant (no talk about emotions) so I'm calling off the engagement and we can get married.
She holds off his proposal for a while (because she knows its a mistake but then she's right back to drowning in the adoration she feels for this man and insecurities about him wanting her. Well obviously, she never knew where she stood in his life, even after being married.
Then in the last few pages we are told Atreus loved her from the beginning and that he wanted to go back to her, that his ex-fiancee did not hold a candle to her, but it still feels like the relationship was never developed. So I never rooted for Lindy or them, I honestly just wished I could hear more about my other pairs Sergei & Alissa or even Jasim and Elinor; whose books I was able to enjoy.

Greek Tycoon, Inexperienced Mistress (Harlequin Presents) Overview

Lindy was amazed when shipping tycoon Atreus Drakos made her his mistress. "Her"--with her fuller figure and lowly lifestyle making candles and potpourri! However, Atreus seemed enchanted by her curves when he made passionate love to her at his country retreat.
But Lindy came down to earth with two bumps, first when Atreus revealed she was just his weekend mistress; his "bride" would be selected from the upper echelons of Greek society. The second bump she wouldn't be able to hide...because she was carrying Atreus's baby!--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

The Greek's Pregnant Lover (Harlequin Presents) Review

"The Greek's Pregnant Lover" wasn't nearly as tender and natural as the first book in the set, "The Shy Bride," but it was still a really good read. The characters are interesting and, in more traditional Harlequin fashion, have a lot of emotional miles on them that were gathered in the conventional sense: Piper still recovering from an unfaithful ex-husband and Zephyr walled off because of his childhood. Even those background stories, though, held more depth and development than most Harlequin story lines.
The only reason I was mildly disappointed in this book (and it was MILD) is because the first one was simply so wonderful. (And, yes, I realize that's a lousy reason to be "disappointed" in a book, but I've re-read "The Shy Bride" at least three times already).
This book was fine: The writing was nice, the characters compelling, the setting beautiful... All of that was expected, and Lucy Monroe delivered. One thing that always irritates me (again, mild) when readers are brought in on relationships already in progress is that we don't get to see as much of the natural progression in a couple's personality. In this case, Lucy Monroe did a good job showing us -- not just telling -- why these two people were and continue to be drawn together.
A very nice story.

The Greek's Pregnant Lover (Harlequin Presents) Overview

Self-made billionaire Zephyr Nikos has come a long way from the streets of Athens, but his heart is stone-cold--like marble. He can't offer Piper Madison his love; instead he offers her his world--fine dining, private jet, rubbing shoulders with the rich and powerful....As their desire heats up and finally reaches boiling point, Zephyr and Piper must end their affair before one of them gets hurt. There's just one small complication...Piper's pregnancy test just came back positive!--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Strictly Lonergan's Business: AND Pregnant with the First Heir (Silhouette Desire): AND Pregnant with the First Heir (Silhouette Desire) Review

From back cover:
SEDUCED BY THE BOSS
Tired of going unnoticed by the boss she loved for years, Kara Sloan decided now was the time to pack her bags and quit. But just as she was about to storm away, Cooper Lonergan surprised her with a night of seduction.
He couldn't let the one woman who organized his chaotic world slip through his fingers. Cooper's plan was to do anything to keep Kara in his life -- including taking her to his bed.
But this sudden change from all business to all pleasure wasn't without its share of consequences....
-------------------
This was a very good read from start to finish. It's not often that I like a character after just reading the first page; but I did. Kara was spirited and very realistic in her thoughts and feelings. I liked the elements with the ghosts and the characters. The only reason I'm not giving this a higher rating is I think Cooper needed to be developed just a tad more, at least where Kara's concerned. But I've read worse in both those departments and in this book, it's only a tiny, tiny complaint. Overall the pace was good and I now need to find the other two in the series!! I'd definitely recommend this for a fast and well-written read.
