Rattled: A Memoir Review

I adored this book so much I wrote a review when I was just a few chapters in (which I had to delete to post this review). Well, I have finished it, and I can say with certainty that this book was wonderful from beginning to end. Coppa's writing is engrossing. I saw this book while I was checking out at Barnes&Noble. It was sitting by the check out counter on the mother's day stand and the bright chick-lit-esque cover caught my eye. I quickly read the back and decided to give it a try. I was unaware that Coppa writes a blog for Glamour (I'm a Cosmo girl myself), so I was not sure what to expect.
For any woman who has peed on a sick and either hoped to God it was one line or two this book is for you. Whether you have had a close call, are a mother yourself, or just have a soul, you can relate to Coppa's journey into a situation that turns out so magically. Of course most single women do not plan to become single mothers, but Coppa makes an amazing revelation that I loved. She does not want to be pregnant, and hates the situation she is in, but she wants her baby. That is so often the most overlooked aspect of unexpected pregnancies with younger women. Coppa got something so wonderful out of a not-so-good predicament.
This book is a total page turner. Her attention to detail is unreal. I felt like one of her best friends, like I was there through this with her the whole 9 months. This book really impressed me, especially coming from such a young author. If it is any foreshadowing into what Coppa will bring us in the future we are all in luck. I can't wait to read more from this author, and I definitely hope she writes some more about her life with her son, Jack.

Rattled: A Memoir Overview

Warm, honest, funny, and empowering, Rattled! is an unforgettable memoir of a life that takes an unexpected turn—and a brave young woman who decides to follow where the road leads. Everything in twenty-six-year-old Christine's life was going as planned—great friends, a promising job as a magazine assistant, New York City at her feet . . . even a cute guy. Until the fateful day she realizes she's pregnant by said cute guy, whom she'd only been dating for a few months. The next thing you know, he bails and Christine is left to wonder, What now? Trading Manhattan for the suburbs, skinny jeans for sweatpants, and all-nighters with the girls for 3 a.m. feedings with a restless infant, Christine chooses to live a life that honors what's important to her—and finds strength she didn't know she had in the process.

Baby Love: Choosing Motherhood After a Lifetime of Ambivalence Review

What a stunning waste of twenty bucks. As a 36 year old woman contemplating motherhood I expected to find thoughtful musings and good company on the journey. Instead, a "dear diary" of jumbled confessions from an admittedly privileged but incredibly solipsistic narrator. Join her pity party as she boo-hoos her way through a hospital stay, a search for a physician/caregiver, the loss of her figure and sex appeal---never mind she indulges in more navel-gazing and food than any pregnant woman has a right to (explaining to her stepson, for example, that at 16 weeks there are just certain things she can't do, like climb stairs. Or focus on others. Or put her fork down--she gains 35 pounds in 20 weeks and claims her job is to sit around "rubbing her belly and glowing.") The few honest confessions and discussions are by far overshadowed by her need to indulge and reassure herself that she is a good and holy creature, that her exes and famous mother done her so horribly wrong, and that nothing on the planet--partners, careers, even longed-for adopted children--is so incredibly sublime worthy of exultation and love as giving birth to your "own" child. A supreme disappointment from a bright young scholar from whom I expected so much more.

Julie's Gift: Memories of London Review

I just read 'Julie's Gift' written by Kevin Kirsch, a husband who is not a feelings sharer, but through this novella lets us all know (including his wife) that he does have deep feelings. It is a nice light read that may make you look at your unromantic partner a bit differently since it reminds you that just because feelings are not shared doesn't mean they're not felt. The plot is not riveting and you won't find a car chase, but that's the best part. It revolves around a couple's anniversary trip to London, England. The husband admits his idea of a trip is from the couch to the fridge, but goes out of love for his wife. It unfolds from there. The coolest thing about this book is that it was penned in secret by the husband and presented to her as a Valentine's surprise! Julie's Gift has great sample itineraries (how they actually spent their days in London) as well as the author's Top Ten London Travel Tips for the Guys (funny and useful list).
Not everyone is romantic or able to share feelings aloud, and many of those people are men. This book is a thoughtful and dare I say passionate shout to his wife to tell her that even when he doesn't say so, he is happy and lucky to be with her.

Julie's Gift: Memories of London Overview

Kevin and Julie travel to London. Kevin loathes sightseeing. Julie is the quintessential tourist. Kevin ends up enjoying the trip but doesn't tell Julie. He secretly writes a book about his fond memories to surprise her and express his love.
