Paternity Review

This clever story keeps you reading. You will find yourself not guessing what will happen a chapter or two, or three later down the line. Better yet, you will not want to guess right and ruin things. The story turns often at unexpected angles, yet you just know that bad things are not really going to happen to anyone. Mostly.
The reader familiar with Elliott's "Silas Marner" will appreciate Baruch's descriptions of what the women characters look and dress like. Both food and religion figure heavily in "Paternity," frequently linked to each other. Oddly, both give tension to the story in similar ways. Many of the personages find themselves, one way or another, tossed into the middle of competing dietary or doctrinal systems. Though this flavors the narrative, the reader will recognize these as decoration - context - not core items. If the author intended either to be persuasive topics, then she simply will have to work on that for the next novel.
Speaking of which, is it possible that the author may follow "Paternity" with a story of, say, the misadventures of one of the character's grandchildren in the year 2031? With a title such as, say, "Prodigal"? If so, the reader would be well encouraged to get a copy of "Paternity" and be prepared!
To ye fiction eggheads out there: this author uses similes uncommonly well, tasteful as a mint leaf in fresh iced tea. Most fiction writers under-use this literary device, or use it clumsily, which to readers is as welcome as a slice of sour cornbread, no butter.
To ye real men out there: read "Paternity" if you want to catch on to things that women really like. Half of them, anyway.

Paternity Overview

Joel Berger's charmed life is slipping away. Determined to father a child before he dies, Joel makes one desperate appeal to the women of his macrobiotic dinner group for help. Soon he is surrounded by a colorful cast of female characters, including his iron-willed yet oddly endearing mother, Sylvia. You'll laugh and cry along with the Bergers as the story of their patchwork family begins to unfold, taking some deliciously unexpected turns along the way.

The Last Storyteller Review

Loved how Diane Noble wove family history together with the stories of three generations of today's women, and seeing how God's hand works miracles yesterday, today and tomorrow. I join the ranks of those readers who could not put the book down until the last page!

Where the Heart Is (Oprah's Book Club) Review

You know that you like to laugh, as well as feel sober and near tears. This is a book that should please. The well-thumbed trade paperback in our library continues to be checked out and praised. Even since the movie was released, folks still want to read the words of Billie Letts, a comic, heart-felt word crafter.
Such great names as Novalee and Americus Nation, Willy Jack Pickens, Sister Husband, Moses Whitecotton, make the reader want to see what this is all about. And Novalee's superstition over the number 7 adds to the folksie manner in which Letts develops her story. As to plot, a baby born in a Wal-Mart, why not?
In one episode, you find yourself laughing out loud, and in another there is suspense, sorrow, and a teary eye. Letts gives you the full experience in a book that can't be put down. Add these characters to your friends in print. And read The Honk And Holler Opening Soon, too. While not a sequel, exactly, it does depict another set of Sequoiah, Oklahomans who are a part of another good story.
Letts is a talented story teller. For a relaxing good read, try her books.

Top-Notch Surgeon, Pregnant Nurse (Harlequin Medical Romance, 366) Review

Beth Rogers is simply not a one-night stand type of woman! However, on that one day she threw caution aside as the arms of one man made her forget the past. Little did she expect to ever see him again... especially not so soon and particularly not as a coworker! Dr. Gabe Fallon is a visiting neurosurgeon and Beth will have to work with him on a delicate case. Gabe and Beth have a lot of emotional baggage to overcome, especially when they realize Beth is pregnant. Does love stand a chance for these two aching souls?
Amy Andrews made me cry. More than once, I should say! TOP-NOTCH SURGEON, PREGNANT NURSE offers one heck of an emotional roller coaster ride. The characters are so vividly drawn that it's impossible not to get caught up in their lives. Gabe and Beth are both hurting in such different ways and it's simply beautiful to see the healing taking place as the story progresses.
Amy Andrews doesn't hesitate to take on tough issues and TOP-NOTCH SURGEON, PREGNANT NURSE is a spectacular example. The depth of her character building draws the reader in but it is the twists that make this story so much more powerful than the title suggests. I don't want to say too much and give the story away but suffice to say that Amy Andrews ensures TOP-NOTCH SURGEON, PREGNANT NURSE is the sort of story that sticks with you long after you've finished the last page. I can't recommend this one highly enough! Absolute perfection!
