Pickles and Ice Cream: A Father's Guide to Pregnancy Review

The book provides simple, concise information about pregnancy, which every father-to-be should be aware of. There were even a few issues that my wife had not heard about before, but found them to be accurate when she questioned the doctor. However, for most of you very involved fathers-to-be, much of the information will come as no surprise, as you will, most likely, have already heard it from your wife's doctor. Nevertheless, the book is so informative that my wife decided to read it, also. My one disappointment was that the title of the book implies a toung-in-cheek approach, but, for the most part, the book is very dry. Easy reading. Most people should be able to read it in a few days.

When Men are Pregnant Review

Most books on pregnancy are written for women - and rightly so, but mostly there is a man involved somewhere and he can be forgotten in the excitement. This book addresses the concerns of men before and after conception - particularly their emotional concerns. I bought it for my husband, but have read it myself. Now I have a better understanding of what he is worried and excited about. It has helped us address issues that otherwise may not have brought into the open. If you are thinking about starting a family - read this book - there's a great chapter on "the decision". If you're already cooking - read it now. There are chapters that deal with each trimester and the birth itself. Reading this book can improve your communication as a couple and may help prevent some issues later on.

When Men are Pregnant Overview

An important guide that addresses the psychological, emotional, and practical issues men face during a partner's pregnancy. An invaluable guide to parenthood--from a man's point of view. Shapiro is the author of The Measure of A Man.

The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth and the First Year of Fatherhood Review

This book is exactly what the author claims it to be: the story of a man who never wanted to be a father and to whom this seems to have happened accidentally. Until then, we're ok. Soon we realize that the author has no or very little education on pregnancy, child education or any sort of academic background granting him the right to claim providing fathers-to-be with a "surviving guide".
In reality, the macho and insensitive approach to the book makes one feel that pregnancy is a burden and that, whatever you do as a father-to-be, just do the bare minimum to survive and hope for the best.
I guess in this day and age, everyone believes they have a right to express themselves and publish a book. In our capitalist mind, it's OK, but all this book is doing is taking space on a shelf in some bookstore.
I strongly disadvise reading this if you want to learn anything about how to help your partner, wife or girlfriend to get through pregnancy. And mostly, I strongly disadvise reading this book if you want tips on how to deal with your new role and responsibilities as a father.

The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth and the First Year of Fatherhood Overview

In high school, Michael Crider was the jokester, the drummer in a band, the Howie Mandel impersonator. Fast-forward ten years and the funny man has married and become the family man. The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the First Year of Fatherhood-Crider's candid, down-to-earth account of his transformation-proves that even without much sleep, he has kept his sense of humor completely intact. From the moment he hears the unexpected news that the pregnancy test is positive to the end of his son's first year of life, Michael Crider is awed, anxious, and all-too-human. In between these milestones, he endures the aches and pains of his wife's pregnancy (which had a clear impact on his own bodily comfort), swallows his pride when bunny wallpaper replaces his beloved Budweiser mirror, has a short and only partially-appreciated stint as her labor coach on the Big Day, and experiences every one of his son's "firsts" as though they were his own. Honest, informative, hilarious, and heartwarming, The Guy's Guide to Surviving Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the First Year of Fatherhood is a must-read for all new parents.

Dad's Guide to Pregnancy For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) Review

Like all the Dummy books, this is easy to scan, pick and choose what you're most interested in. It included chapters I would never have considered, such as: "Whose Baby is this Anyway? Dealing with Overbearing Family Members." (Especially since I'm the grandmother-to-be, not the father.)
Since my children are long grown, reviewing the book was a good refresher on what to expect in May. And some information was completely new to me, such as taking a colicky baby in a dark quiet room to decrease stimulation. Chapter 11 covers Supporting the New Mom... including knowing when to call the doctor for problems after a cesarean. For a first time dad, being warned about the hormone issues that can occur has got to be reassuring. The chapter on finances was not something I expected to find. And knowing how to handle potential medical emergencies in advance has got to be reassuring for any guy.
In our family situation a cesarean birth is to be scheduled, so what to expect before and after the surgery was good information for me.
I think this book would make a great gift even if the new dad reads only one chapter...the last one. "Ten Ways to be a Super Dad from Day One." Guys typically like goals, and in a few pages there are some invaluable tips.
This book is well thought out and thorough...and one of the authors is a stay at home dad...so there's a real expert behind the advice.

The Bloke's Guide To Pregnancy Review

Necessity really IS the mother of invention. Considering the appalling lack of male-directed books on the subject, this book is an absolute must for the average man who just wants to be involved in this most life-changing of events. It is exactly what it says on the tin: a "blokes" guide, so if you don't see yourself or your partner as a "bloke" then don't buy it. If on the other hand you have an open-mind, sense of humour and any degree of honesty in your relationship then this book will be rewarding and entertaining for both men and women. It is honest, funny, informative, clearly written and at times incredibly moving. The author has widely researched the subject and has broken down all the "technical" aspects of pregnancy and birth into handy, easy-to-understand sections. It was never out of reach throughout my wife's pregnancy and re-reading it after the actual birth, I could appreciate anew its accuracy and insight. I currently live in a country and a culture where men play very little part in their partners pregnancy and where many hospitals do not even permit husbands and boyfriends to attend the birth of their children. Considering this, I can forgive the author for the occasional crudeness when describing his partners physical changes or the gorier aspects of labour. His genuine love for his wife and delight in becoming a father is always evident throughout. Mr Smith has achieved something remarkable and he deserves only praise for such an emotionally honest, groundbreaking and entertaining read. Thanks to the author and best wishes to him and his family.

The Bloke's Guide To Pregnancy Overview

Based on more than 100 interviews with blokes who lived to tell the tale--some who even admitted to enjoying the experience--this book has real-life stories as well as tons of advice that isn't remotely boring (honestly). Now you'll be able to tell your trimesters from your triple blood tests, as well as getting answers on the following topics: - Money--Do I really have to spend my entire lager allowance on that hand-held breast pump?- Sex--Will it harm the unborn baby? (Or am I just being arrogant?)- Breasts--Will they stay that size forever?- Hospital Parking Spaces--Am I going to have to fork out 50 every time she thinks she's going into labour?... and a whole lot more besides...this is a book you'll want to share with all the blokes in your life!

Pregnant Man: How Nature Makes Fathers Out of Men Review

Does a great job of relating to what the father is going through. Absolutely hysterical and very real. Had both my husband and I laughing every page. Churchwell's research into the role of the father through history and in many cultures provides insight not found in "what to expect" and the rest of that stack. His display of backbone with overbearing hospital staff during labor and delivery is inspiring without being rude. Our copy is getting well-read!

Pregnant Man: How Nature Makes Fathers Out of Men Overview

Gordon Churchwell's wife is pregnant. Immediately, she swings into action, buying baby clothes, toys, and supplies, and consulting a never-ending stack of pregnancy books. Gordon? Pacify Me: A Handbook for the Freaked-Out New Dad Review

There are books out there, geared towards new dads, that come with inherent problems. They either speak (metaphorically) over your head with unnecessary amounts of information or simply talk down to you.
["Rookie Dad" comes to mind. I sometimes felt like I was being lectured to instead of having my confidence built. The author was telling me not to hound my wife for sex after childbirth and to "get on the floor and play with your baby." Wow, really?]
"Pacify Me" is not the be-all-end-all of new dad books, but the unique thing about it is that it's a book written by a (previously) freaked-out dad FOR freaked-out dads. It doesn't talk down to you, it speaks directly at you. If some of it comes across as dumb or juvenile, that's probably part of Chris Mancini's point; being a comedian, jokes make up the bulk of his communication. He does his best to set you at ease through self-deprecation, sci-fi references, and ripping on his in-laws.
Poking through his jokes and random references to robots, you get glimpses of some really solid advice and occasionally some almost embarrassingly frank information. The former is a nice surprise for a book that I didn't expect to take seriously, and the latter is not a bad thing. It gives a hamball like Mancini some credence.
"Pacify Me" all adds up to something new dads can EASILY wrap their minds around. It's a breezy read, at 200 pages with large font and large spacing. Even if I didn't agree with him 100% of the time (I honestly forget which points I didn't agree with, showing that I didn't think they were serious differences in opinion), I'm glad I read it.
And on page 44 he assembles a chart comparing famous pediatric author Dr. Spock to Mr. Spock from "Star Trek." Go on, try to find another parenting book that does that.

Pacify Me: A Handbook for the Freaked-Out New Dad Overview

Anyone who's seen Judd Apatow's smash hit Knocked Up knows that many modern men are still clinging to their inner child. So what happens when this man-child finds out that he's an expectant father? The obvious: he freaks out. Written for the new fathers who know more about Mr. Spock than Dr. Spock, My Life Is Over empathetically shatters the myths and fears new fathers really feel. Using the power and wisdom of hindsight, Chris Mancini humorously and candidly shares his own personal journey of becoming a new father and covers the entire process— from pregnancy to delivery, the adjustment period, and the infant years. Anticipating a broad range of questions from the practical (how do I stop a kid from crying? how many diapers will I really be changing?) to the personal (how soon can I have sex with my wife again?), Mancini mixes entertaining anecdotes with helpful in-the-trenches information, offering an invaluable guide for every scared, nervous—but ultimately very capable—new dad.

Congratulations, You're Gonna Be a Dad: What's Ahead from A to Z for First-Time Fathers Review

This book is very good at helping men understand a lot of the things that go with pregnancy and childbirth, in an easy to understand methode (alphabetical order). However, I was not expecting this book to be focused on Christian religious beliefs. For a family who is not Christian, this was a little annoying, as we did not relate to the many stories from men in the church community. Basically at the beginning of each letter, there is a short story from a minister, or religious teacher about his experience with his own wife and childbirth etc. While the stories were very touching, they were filled with Christian language and references to the bible. If on the other hand you are a devout Christian, this is the book for you.

Congratulations, You're Gonna Be a Dad: What's Ahead from A to Z for First-Time Fathers Overview

An indispensable guide to everything a first-time father needs to know. Medically accurate A–Z information on everything from air travel to zinc oxide. "I recommend this book for first-time fathers." —Chuck Swindoll (20060901)

The New Dad's Survival Guide: Man-to-Man Advice for First-Time Fathers Review

This is a quick funny read; perfect for the new dad with little time. Mr. Mactavish has done an outstanding job of conveying the feelings and fears of new dads from personal experience. The book, however, is meant to 1)reassure the new dad that we've all been there and 2) give insights into certain events that are yet to come (Particularly liked the circumcision description-OUCH!). Take the negative comments about this book with a grain of salt. It's humor, not a guide on new parenting. Highly recommended.

Dad's Pregnant Too: Expectant fathers, expectant mothers, new dads and new moms share advice, tips and stories about all the surprises, questions and joys ahead... Review

I enjoyed this book a lot. There's a lot of good info for expectant dads. But I feel like it really fell short of being a book for ALL dads and is really a book for dads who work who have partners who do not or will not once the baby is born.
While having the anecdotal stories from folks was nice, too often these stories fell into re-asserting the author's opinions/positions. For instance, in the section about whether to watch the baby come out or not, there were plenty of folks saying to watch but few (if any) saying not to. Guess which one the author preferred?
Also, the book was almost completely centered around working fathers who have partners who will no longer be working. Even in the few and brief mentions of women working, there was nothing about fathers who do not have a job at all and who are the primary care-givers. When the "stay at home" dad was finally introduced at the end of the book, it was a dad who also works from home part time. It seemed like the author had little concept of a father who does not have ANY job aside from his kid(s) -- or if he does, this father was absent from this book. What the author DID include was an entire section on fathers who travel a lot for work because -- guess what -- the author travels at lot for work.
This was a pretty enjoyable book, and it did have a lot of good information. But I couldn't shake the feeling that the author wrote it for himself and fathers like him at the exclusion of others.
There was also no mention of adoption, same-sex couples, religious difficulties during pregnancy and childbirth, and the author constantly hawks his website, which is deserted. I don't mean to sound harsh, but it could have been a much better book and probably will be in future editions.
